Character expansion of matrix integrals

We consider character expansion of tau functions and multiple integrals in characters of orhtogonal and symplectic groups. In particular we consider character expansions of integrals over orthogonal and over symplectic matrices.

Pfaffian and determinantal tau functions I

Adler, Shiota and van Moerbeke observed that a tau function of the Pfaff lattice is a square root of a tau function of the Toda lattice hierarchy of Ueno and Takasaki. In this paper we give a representation theoretical explanation for this phenomenon. We consider 2-BKP and two-component 2-KP tau functions. We shall show that a square of a BKP tau function is equal to a certain two-component KP tau function and a square of a 2-BKP tau function is equal to a certain two-component 2-KP tau function.

Multiple sums and integrals as neutral BKP tau functions

We consider multiple sums and multi-integrals as tau functions of the BKP hierarchy using neutral fermions as the simplest tool for deriving these. The sums are over projective Schur functions $Q_α$ for strict partitions $α$. We consider two types of such sums: weighted sums of $Q_α$ over strict partitions $α$ and sums over products $Q_αQ_γ$. In this way we obtain discrete analogues of the beta-ensembles ($β=1,2,4$). Continuous versions are represented as multiple integrals. Such sums and integrals are of interest in a number of problems in mathematics and physics.

Random turn walk on a half line with creation of particles at the origin

We consider a version of random motion of hard core particles on the semi-lattice $ 1, 2, 3,...$, where in each time instant one of three possible events occurs, viz., (a) a randomly chosen particle hops to a free neighboring site, (b) a particle is created at the origin (namely, at site 1) provided that site 1 is free and (c) a particle is eliminated at the origin (provided that the site 1 is occupied). Relations to the BKP equation are explained. Namely, the tau functions of two different BKP hierarchies provide generating functions respectively (I) for transition weights between different particle configurations and (II) for an important object: a normalization function which plays the role of the statistical sum for our non-equilibrium system. As an example we study a model where the hopping rate depends on two parameters ($r$ and $β$). For time $\time\to\infty$ we obtain the asymptotic configuration of particles obtained from the initial empty state (the state without particles) and find an analog of the first order transition at $β=1$.

WDVV Equations, Darboux-Egoroff Metric and the Dressing Method

Dressing technique is used to construct commuting Lax operators which provide an integrable (canonical) structure behind Witten--Dijkgraaf--Verlinde--Verlinde equations. The commuting flows are related to the isomonodromic flows. Examples of the canonical integrable structure are given in two- and three-dimensional cases. The three-dimensional example is associated with the rational Landau-Ginzburg potentials.

The construction of Frobenius manifolds from KP tau-functions

Frobenius manifolds (solutions of WDVV equations) in canonical coordinates are determined by the system of Darboux-Egoroff equations. This system of partial differential equations appears as a specific subset of the $n$-component KP hierarchy. KP representation theory and the related Sato infinite Grassmannian are used to construct solutions of this Darboux-Egoroff system and the related Frobenius manifolds. Finally we show that for these solutions Dubrovin's isomonodromy tau-function can be expressed in the KP tau-function.

Geometric Bäcklund--Darboux transformations for the KP hierarchy

We shown that, if you have two planes in the Segal-Wilson Grassmannian that have an intersection of finite codimension, then the corresponding solutions of the KP hierarchy are linked by Bäcklund-Darboux transformations (BDT). The pseudodifferential operator that performs this transformation is shown to be built up in a geometric way from elementary BDT's and is given here in a closed form. The geometric description of elementary DBT's requires that one has a geometric interpretation of the dual wavefunctions involved. This is done here with the help of a suitable algebraic characterization of the wavefunction. The BDT's also induce transformations of the tau-function associated to a plane in the Grassmannian. For the Gelfand-Dickey hierarchies we derive a geometric characterization of the BDT'ss that preserves these subsystems of the KP hierarchy. This generalizes the classical Darboux-transformations. we also determine an explicit expression for the squared eigenfunction potentials. Next a connection is laid between the KP hierarchy and the 1-Toda lattice hierarchy. It is shown that infinite flags in the Grassmannian yield solutions of the latter hierarchy. these flags can be constructed by means of BDT's, starting from some plane. Other applications of these BDT's are a geometric way to characterize Wronskian solutions of the $m$-vector $k$-constrained KP hierarchy and the construction of a vast collection of orthogonal polynomials, playing a role in matrix models.

An analytic description of the vector constrained KP hierarchy

In this paper we give a geometric description in terms of the Grassmann manifold of Segal and Wilson, of the reduction of the KP hierarchy known as the vector $k$-constrained KP hierarchy. We also show in a geometric way that these hierarchies are equivalent to Krichever's general rational reductions of the KP hierarchy.

The $n$-component KP hierarchy and representation theory

Starting from free charged fermions we give equivalent definitions of the $n\/$-component KP hierarchy, in terms of $τ\/$-functions $τ_α\/$ (where $α\in M =\/$ root lattice of $sl_n\/$), in terms of $n \times n\/$ matrix valued wave functions $W_α(α\in M)\/$, and in terms of pseudodifferential wave operators $P_α(α\in M)\/$. These imply the deformation and the zero curvature equations. We show that the 2-component KP hierarchy contains the Davey-Stewartson system and the $n\geq3\/$ component KP hierarchy continues the $n\/$-wave interaction equations. This allows us to construct theis solutions.
