A fixed-target programme at the LHC for heavy-ion, hadron, spin and astroparticle physics: AFTER@LHC

Thanks to its multi-TeV LHC proton and lead beams, the LHC complex allows one to perform the most energetic fixed-target experiments ever and to study with high precision pp, pd and pA collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 115 GeV and Pbp and PbA collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 72 GeV. We present a selection of feasibility studies for the production of quarkonia, open heavy-flavor mesons as well as light-flavor hadrons in pA and PbA collisions using the LHCb and ALICE detectors in a fixed-target mode.

Nucleon and nuclear structure through dilepton production

Transverse momentum distributions and generalized parton distributions provide a comprehensive framework for the three-dimensional imaging of the nucleon and the nucleus experimentally using deeply virtual semi-exclusive and exclusive processes. The advent of combined high luminosity facilities and large acceptance detector capabilities enables experimental investigation of the partonic structure of hadrons with time-like virtual probes, in complement to the rich on-going space-like virtual probe program. The merits and benefits of the dilepton production channel for nuclear structure studies are discussed within the context of the International Workshop on Nucleon and Nuclear Structure through Dilepton Production taking place at the European Center for Theoretical Studies in Nuclear Physics and Related Areas (ECT$^{\star}$) of Trento. Particularly, the double deeply virtual Compton scattering, the time-like Compton scattering, the deeply virtual meson production, and the Drell-Yan processes are reviewed and a strategy for high impact experimental measurements is proposed.

PARTONS: PARtonic Tomography Of Nucleon Software. A computing framework for the phenomenology of Generalized Parton Distributions

We describe the architecture and functionalities of a C++ software framework, coined PARTONS, dedicated to the phenomenology of Generalized Parton Distributions. These distributions describe the three-dimensional structure of hadrons in terms of quarks and gluons, and can be accessed in deeply exclusive lepto- or photo-production of mesons or photons. PARTONS provides a necessary bridge between models of Generalized Parton Distributions and experimental data collected in various exclusive production channels. We outline the specification of the PARTONS framework in terms of practical needs, physical content and numerical capacity. This framework will be useful for physicists - theorists or experimentalists - not only to develop new models, but also to interpret existing measurements and even design new experiments.

Physics perspectives with AFTER@LHC (A Fixed Target ExpeRiment at LHC)

AFTER@LHC is an ambitious fixed-target project in order to address open questions in the domain of proton and neutron spins, Quark Gluon Plasma and high-$x$ physics, at the highest energy ever reached in the fixed-target mode. Indeed, thanks to the highly energetic 7 TeV proton and 2.76 A.TeV lead LHC beams, center-of-mass energies as large as $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 115 GeV in pp/pA and $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 72 GeV in AA can be reached, corresponding to an uncharted energy domain between SPS and RHIC. We report two main ways of performing fixed-target collisions at the LHC, both allowing for the usage of one of the existing LHC experiments. In these proceedings, after discussing the projected luminosities considered for one year of data taking at the LHC, we will present a selection of projections for light and heavy-flavour production.

Quarkonium-photoproduction prospects at a fixed-target experiment at the LHC (AFTER@LHC)

We report on the potentialities offered by a fixed-target experiment at the LHC using the proton and ion LHC beams (AFTER@LHC project) regarding the study of J/psi exclusive-photoproduction in pA and AA collisions. The foreseen usage of polarised targets (hydrogen, deuteron, helium) gives access to measurements of the Single-Transverse-Spin Asymmetries of this exclusive process, therefore allowing one to access the helicity-flip Generalised Parton Distribution (GPD) Eg. We detail the expected yields of photoproduced J/psi in proton-hydrogen and lead-hydrogen collisions and discuss the statistical uncertainties on the asymmetry measurement for one year of data taking at the LHC.

On neutrino production of a charmed meson

We calculate in the framework of the collinear QCD approach the amplitude for exclusive neutrino-production of a pseudoscalar charmed $D$ meson. This process allows to access gluon and both chiral-odd and chiral-even quark generalized parton distributions (GPDs), which contribute in specific ways to the amplitude for different polarization states of the $W$ boson. The energy dependence of the cross section allows to separate different contributions and the measurement of the azimuthal dependence helps to single out the transversity chiral-odd GPDs contributions. The flavor dependence, and in particular the difference between $D^+$ and $D^0$ production rates, allows to test the importance of gluonic contributions. The behaviour of the proton and neutron target cross sections enables to separate the $u$ and $d$ quark contributions. Planned medium and high energy neutrino facilities will thus allow some important progress in the realm of hadronic physics.

Hard exclusive neutrino production of a light meson

We update the leading order in $α_s$ QCD amplitude for deep exclusive neutrino and antineutrino production of a light meson on an unpolarized nucleon. The factorization theorems of the collinear QCD approach allow us to write the amplitude as the convolution of generalized parton distributions (GPDs) and perturbatively calculable coefficient functions. We study both the pseudoscalar meson and longitudinally polarized vector meson cases. It turns out that, contrarily to the electroproduction case, the leading twist scattering amplitudes for $π$ and $ρ_L$ productions are proportional to one another, which may serve as an interesting new test of the leading twist dominance of exclusive processes at medium scale. The dominance of the gluonic contribution to most cross sections is stressed.

Exclusive neutrino-production of a charmed meson

We calculate the leading order in $α_s$ QCD amplitude for exclusive neutrino and antineutrino production of a $D$ pseudoscalar charmed meson on an unpolarized nucleon. We work in the framework of the collinear QCD approach where generalized parton distributions (GPDs) factorize from perturbatively calculable coefficient functions. We include both $O(m_c)$ terms in the coefficient functions and $O(M_D)$ mass term contributions in the heavy meson distribution amplitudes. We emphasize the sensitivity of specific observables on the transversity quark GPDs.

The Megamaser Cosmology Project.IX. Black hole masses for three maser galaxies

As part of the Megamaser Cosmology Project (MCP), we present VLBI maps of nuclear water masers toward five galaxies. The masers originate in sub-parsec circumnuclear disks. For three of the galaxies, we fit Keplerian rotation curves to estimate their supermassive black hole (SMBH) masses, and determine (2.9 $\pm$ 0.3) $\times~10^{6}M_\odot$ for J0437+2456, (1.7 $\pm$ 0.1) $\times~10^{7}M_\odot$ for ESO 558$-$G009, and (1.1 $\pm$ 0.2) $\times~10^{7}M_\odot$ for NGC 5495. In the other two galaxies, Mrk 1029 and NGC 1320, the geometry and dynamics are more complicated and preclude robust black hole mass estimates. Including our new results, we compiled a list of 15 VLBI-confirmed disk maser galaxies with robust SMBH mass measurements. With this sample, we confirm the empirical relation of $R_{out} \propto 0.3 M_{SMBH}$ reported in Wardle & Yusef-Zadeh (2012). We also find a tentative correlation between maser disk outer radii and WISE luminosity. We find no correlations of maser disk size with X-ray 2-10 keV luminosity or [O III] luminosity.

Probing the transversity spin structure of a nucleon in neutrino-production of a charmed meson

Including O(m_c) terms in the coefficient functions and/or O(m_D) twist 3 contributions in the heavy meson distribution amplitudes leads to a non-zero transverse amplitude for exclusive neutrino production of a D pseudoscalar charmed meson on an unpolarized target. We work in the framework of the collinear QCD approach where chiral-odd transversity generalized parton distributions (GPDs) factorize from perturbatively calculable coefficient functions.

GPDs in heavy meson production and Compton scattering

Exclusive processes of heavy meson production and spacelike and timelike deeply virtual Compton scattering allow us to investigate the hadron structure in terms of Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs). We review recent developments in the NLO description of such processes.

Probing GPDs in photoproduction processes at hadron colliders

Generalized parton distributions (GPDs) enter QCD factorization theorems for hard exclusive reactions. They encode rich information about hadron partonic structure. We explore a possibility to constrain GPDs in experiments at LHC considering two different exclusive processes: the timelike Compton scattering and the photoproduction of heavy vector mesons.

First 230 GHz VLBI Fringes on 3C 279 using the APEX Telescope

We report about a 230 GHz very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) fringe finder observation of blazar 3C 279 with the APEX telescope in Chile, the phased submillimeter array (SMA), and the SMT of the Arizona Radio Observatory (ARO). We installed VLBI equipment and measured the APEX station position to 1 cm accuracy (1 sigma). We then observed 3C 279 on 2012 May 7 in a 5 hour 230 GHz VLBI track with baseline lengths of 2800 M$λ$ to 7200 M$λ$ and a finest fringe spacing of 28.6 micro-arcseconds. Fringes were detected on all baselines with SNRs of 12 to 55 in 420 s. The correlated flux density on the longest baseline was ~0.3 Jy/beam, out of a total flux density of 19.8 Jy. Visibility data suggest an emission region <38 uas in size, and at least two components, possibly polarized. We find a lower limit of the brightness temperature of the inner jet region of about 10^10 K. Lastly, we find an upper limit of 20% on the linear polarization fraction at a fringe spacing of ~38 uas. With APEX the angular resolution of 230 GHz VLBI improves to 28.6 uas. This allows one to resolve the last-photon ring around the Galactic Center black hole event horizon, expected to be 40 uas in diameter, and probe radio jet launching at unprecedented resolution, down to a few gravitational radii in galaxies like M 87. To probe the structure in the inner parsecs of 3C 279 in detail, follow-up observations with APEX and five other mm-VLBI stations have been conducted (March 2013) and are being analyzed.

Lepton-pair production in ultraperipheral collisions at AFTER@LHC

We investigate the potentialities offered by the study of lepton-pair production in ultraperipheral collisions at a fixed-target experiment using the proton and ion LHC beams. In these collisions, exclusive or semi-exclusive lepton-pair production can be used as luminosity monitor as well as a check of the equivalent-photon approximation, via the measurement of the Bethe-Heitler cross section. It can also serve as a probe of the inner hadron structure via the measurement of the lepton-pair azimuthal asymmetry which is sensitive to the timelike virtual Compton scattering. We also briefly discuss the possibility offered by the study of eta(c) production. Finally, we outline the possibilities for lepton-pair production by Pomeron-Odderon fusion in exclusive pp and pA collisions.

Real time cosmology - A direct measure of the expansion rate of the Universe

In recent years cosmology has undergone a revolution, with precise measurements of the microwave background radiation, large galaxy redshift surveys, and the discovery of the recent accelerated expansion of the Universe using observations of distant supernovae. In this light, the SKA enables us to do an ultimate test in cosmology by measuring the expansion rate of the Universe in real time. This can be done by a rather simple experiment of observing the neutral hydrogen (HI) signal of galaxies at two different epochs. The signal will encounter a change in frequency imprinted as the Universe expands over time and thus monitoring the drift in frequencies will provide a real time measure of the cosmic acceleration. Over a period of 12 years one would expected a frequency shift of the order of 0.1 Hz assuming a standard Lambda-CDM cosmology. Based on the sensitivity estimates of the SKA and the number counts of the expected HI galaxies, it is shown that the number counts are sufficiently high to compensate for the observational uncertainties of the measurements and hence allow a statistical detection of the frequency shift. Probing GPDs in Ultraperipheral Collisions

Ultraperipheral collisions in hadron colliders give new opportunites to investigate the hadron stucture through exclusive photoproduction processes. We describe the possibility of measuring the Generalized Parton Distributions in the Timelike Compton Scattering process and in the production of heavy vector meson.

Experimental and theoretical investigation of angular dependence of the Casimir force between sinusoidally corrugated surfaces

In the current work we present the complete results for the measurement of normal Casimir force between shallow and smooth sinusoidally corrugated gold coated sphere and a plate at various angles between the corrugations using an atomic force microscope. All measured data were compared with the theoretical approach using the proximity force approximation and theory based on derivative expansion. In both cases real material properties of the surfaces and non-zero temperature were taken into account. Special attention is paid to the description of electrostatic interactions between corrugated surfaces at different angels between corrugations and samples reparation and characterization. The measured forces are found to be in good agreement with the theory including correlation effects of geometry and material properties and deviate significantly from the predictions of the proximity force approximation approach. This provides the quantitative confirmation for the observation of diffraction-type effects that are disregarded within the PFA approach. The obtained results open new opportunities for control of the Casimir effect in micromechanical systems.

Timelike Compton scattering with a linearly polarized photon beam

We study the timelike virtual Compton scattering process with a linearly polarized photon beam, in the generalized Bjorken scaling region and in the medium energy range which will be studied intensely at JLab12 experiments. We define new observables and show how they should help to access the polarized quark and gluon generalized parton distributions.
