Direct confirmation of the radial-velocity planet $β$ Pic c

Methods used to detect giant exoplanets can be broadly divided into two categories: indirect and direct. Indirect methods are more sensitive to planets with a small orbital period, whereas direct detection is more sensitive to planets orbiting at a large distance from their host star. %, and thus on long orbital period. This dichotomy makes it difficult to combine the two techniques on a single target at once. Simultaneous measurements made by direct and indirect techniques offer the possibility of determining the mass and luminosity of planets and a method of testing formation models. Here, we aim to show how long-baseline interferometric observations guided by radial-velocity can be used in such a way. We observed the recently-discovered giant planet $β$ Pictoris c with GRAVITY, mounted on the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI). This study constitutes the first direct confirmation of a planet discovered through radial velocity. We find that the planet has a temperature of $T = 1250\pm50$\,K and a dynamical mass of $M = 8.2\pm0.8\,M_{\rm Jup}$. At $18.5\pm2.5$\,Myr, this puts $β$ Pic c close to a 'hot start' track, which is usually associated with formation via disk instability. Conversely, the planet orbits at a distance of 2.7\,au, which is too close for disk instability to occur. The low apparent magnitude ($M_{\rm K} = 14.3 \pm 0.1$) favours a core accretion scenario. We suggest that this apparent contradiction is a sign of hot core accretion, for example, due to the mass of the planetary core or the existence of a high-temperature accretion shock during formation.

Photodetachment Spectroscopy of Quasibound States of the Negative Ion of Lanthanum

The negative ion of lanthanum, La$^-$, has one of the richest bound state spectra observed for an atomic negative ion and has been proposed as a promising candidate for laser-cooling applications. In the present experiments, La$^-$ was investigated using tunable infrared photodetachment spectroscopy. The relative signal for neutral atom production was measured with a crossed ion-beam--laser-beam apparatus over the photon energy range 590 - 920 meV (2100 - 1350 nm) to probe the continuum region above the La neutral atom ground state. Eleven prominent peaks were observed in the La$^-$ photodetachment cross section due to resonant excitation of quasibound transient negative ion states in the continuum which subsequently autodetach. In addition, thresholds were observed for photodetachment from several bound states of La$^-$ to both ground and excited states of La. The present results provide information on the excited state structure and dynamics of La$^-$ that depend crucially on multielectron correlation effects.

Variational and parquet-diagram calculations for neutron matter. II. Twisted Chain Diagrams

We develop a manifestly microscopic method to deal with strongly interacting nuclear systems that have different interactions in spin-singlet and spin-triplet states. In a first step we analyze variational wave functions that have been suggested to describe such systems, and demonstrate that the so-called commutator contributions can have important effects whenever the interactions in the spin-singlet and the spin-triplet states are very different. We then identify these contributions as terms that correspond, in the language of perturbation theory, to non-parquet diagrams. We include these diagrams in a way that is suggested by the Jastrow-Feenberg approach and show that the corrections from non-parquet contributions are, at short distances, larger than all other many-body effects.

Bimeron Clusters in Chiral Antiferromagnets

A mgnetic bimeron is an in-plane topological counterpart of a magnetic skyrmion. Despite the topological equivalence, their statics and dynamics could be distinct, making them attractive from the perspectives of both physics and spintronic applications. In this work, we investigate an antiferromagnetic (AFM) thin film with interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), and introduce the AFM bimeron cluster as a new form of topological quasi-particle. Bimerons demonstrate high current-driven mobility as generic AFM solitons, while featuring anisotropic and relativistic dynamics excited by currents with in-plane and out-of-plane polarizations, respectively. Moreover, these spin textures can absorb other bimeron solitons or clusters along the translational direction to acquire a wide range of Néel topological numbers. The clustering involves the rearrangement of topological structures, and gives rise to remarkable changes in static and dynamical properties. The merits of AFM bimeron clusters reveal a potential path to unify multi-bit data creation, transmission, storage and even topology-based computation within the same material system, and may stimulate innovative spintronic devices enabling new paradigms of data manipulations.

Discovery of Light-induced Metastable Martensitic Anomaly Controlled by Single-Cycle Terahertz Pulses

We report on an ultrafast photoinduced phase transition with a strikingly long-lived Martensitic anomaly driven by above-threshold single-cycle terahertz (THz) pulses in Nb$_3$Sn. A non-thermal, THz-induced depletion of low frequency conductivity indicates increased gap splitting of high energy $Γ_{12}$ bands by removal of their degeneracies which enhances the Martensitic phase. In contrast, optical pumping leads to a $Γ_{12}$ gap melting. Such light-induced non-equilibrium Martensitic instability persists up to a critical temperature $\sim$100 K, i.e., more than twice the equilibrium temperature, and can be stabilized beyond technologically-relevant, nanosecond timescales. Together with first-principle simulations, we identify a compelling THz tuning of structural fluctuations via E$_u$ phonons to achieve a non-equilibrium ordering at high temperatures far exceeding those for equilibrium states.

Insight-HXMT firm detection of the highest energy fundamental cyclotron resonance scattering feature in the spectrum of GRO J1008-57

We report on the observation of the accreting pulsar GRO J1008-57 performed by Insight-HXMT at the peak of the source's 2017 outburst. Pulsations are detected with a spin period of 93.283(1) s. The pulse profile shows double peaks at soft X-rays, and only one peak above 20 keV. The spectrum is well described by the phenomenological models of X-ray pulsars. A cyclotron resonant scattering feature is detected with very high statistical significance at a centroid energy of $E_{\rm cyc}=90.32_{-0.28}^{+0.32}$ keV, for the reference continuum and line models, HIGHECUT and GABS respectively. Detection is very robust with respect to different continuum models. The line energy is significantly higher than what suggested from previous observations, which provided very marginal evidence for the line. This establishes a new record for the centroid energy of a fundamental cyclotron resonant scattering feature observed in accreting pulsars. We also discuss the accretion regime of the source during the Insight-HXMT observation.

An X-ray Luminosity-dependent "Changing-look" Phenomenon in UGC 3223

The nature of the rare "Changing-look" (CL) phenomenon in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is still under debate at current stage. We here present \it Swift/\rm XRT and UVOT follow-up observations of UGC\,3223, a newly discovered repeat CL-AGN with type transitions of $\mathrm{S1.5\rightarrow S2 \rightarrow S1.8}$ occurring in a period of about 30 years. By comparing the values previously reported in the \it ROSAT \rm All-sky Survey and in the second Swift-XRT Point Source catalog, we clearly find that the X-ray flux tightly follows the optical spectral transition, in which a spectral type closer to a Seyfert 1 type is associated with a higher X-ray flux. An invariable X-ray spectral shape is, however, found in the CL phenomenon of the object. An extremely low Eddington ratio of $\sim2\times10^{-4}$ can be obtained from the X-ray luminosity for its Seyfert 2 state, which suggests a favor of the disk-wind broad-line region model in explaining the CL phenomenon. A variation of the total UV emission is not revealed when compared to the previous \it GALEX \rm NUV observation, since the UVOT images indicate that $\sim90$\% UV emission comes from the intensive star formation in the host galaxy.

High temperature mechanical properties and microstructure of hard TaSiN coatings

Room and high temperature mechanical properties of reactive magnetron sputtered TaSiN coatings were measured using nanoindentation (between 25C and 500C). Fracture toughness was also evaluated at a similar temperature range using the micropillar splitting method. The influence of the nitrogen concentration on the evolving phases and microstructure of the TaSiN coatings, before and after the high temperature testing, were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis. XRD spectra showed broad peaks with hexagonal $γ$-Ta2N as the main phase, with the cubic $δ$-TaN phase emerging for higher N contents. Phase composition remained unchanged before and after the 500C tests. However, after the high temperature tests, TEM analysis showed the presence of an oxide surface layer, with a thickness that decreased (from 42 to 15 nm) with N content, due to residual oxygen diffusion, which replaces nitrogen to form amorphous SiOx. Beneath the oxide-rich surface layer, coatings exhibited a stable nanocrystalline columnar microstructure. Hardness and fracture toughness increased with N content, initially due to the formation of an amorphous Si-N tissue at grain boundaries, and for even higher N contents, due to the appearance of the hard cubic $δ$-TaN phase. Hardness at 500C decreased only by 15%, while fracture toughness followed the opposite trend, due to increased plasticity with temperature. The optimum composition turned out to be Ta55Si10N35, which retained a hardness of 30 GPa at 500C, being also the toughest. These observations make this system very interesting for high temperature applications.

Unraveling the Topological Phase of ZrTe$_5$ via Magneto-infrared Spectroscopy

For materials near the phase boundary between weak and strong topological insulators (TIs), their band topology depends on the band alignment, with the inverted (normal) band corresponding to the strong (weak) TI phase. Here, taking the anisotropic transition-metal pentatelluride ZrTe$_5$ as an example, we show that the band inversion manifests itself as a second extremum (band gap) in the layer stacking direction, which can be probed experimentally via magneto-infrared spectroscopy. Specifically, we find that the band anisotropy of ZrTe$_5$ features a slow dispersion in the layer stacking direction, along with an additional set of optical transitions from a band gap away from the Brillouin zone center. Our work identifies ZrTe5 as a strong TI at liquid helium temperature and provides a new perspective in determining band inversion in layered topological materials.

The nuclear architecture of NGC 4151: on the path toward a universal outflow mechanism in light of NGC 1068

We report near-infrared integral field spectroscopic observations of the active galactic nucleus NGC 4151 with archive data from the NIFS-Gemini North Telescope. We have selected best-seeing observations ($\lesssim$0.3 arcsec) that, allied to our methodology of image processing techniques, show structures with spatial resolution comparable to those of the HST. The intricate outflow of NGC 4151 is revisited in light of the results found for NGC 1068, in a previous work, and a very similar dynamic is found: the low-velocity [Fe II] emission depicts the glowing walls of an hourglass structure, while the high-velocity gas fills its volume. From this finding, we show that the misalignment between the jet and the NLR is not a projection effect, as previously thought. A molecular outflow is detected for the first time in this galaxy and, just like in NGC 1068, the transition between the molecular and the ionized gas phases comes from the fragmentation of molecular cavity walls into bullets of ionized gas exposed to the central source. Furthermore, it is suggestive that the same geometrical dichotomy between the cones seen in NGC 1068 is found here, with one side, where the cavity is disrupted by the AGN, being more extended than the other. Finally, a new spatial correlation between the high-velocity [Fe II] and the soft X-ray emission of [Ne IX] is found, which is unexpected given the difference between their ionization potentials.

WALLABY -- An SKA Pathfinder HI Survey

The Widefield ASKAP L-band Legacy All-sky Blind surveY (WALLABY) is a next-generation survey of neutral hydrogen (HI) in the Local Universe. It uses the widefield, high-resolution capability of the Australian Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder (ASKAP), a radio interferometer consisting of 36 x 12-m dishes equipped with Phased-Array Feeds (PAFs), located in an extremely radio-quiet zone in Western Australia. WALLABY aims to survey three-quarters of the sky (-90 degr < Dec < +30 degr) to a redshift of z < 0.26, and generate spectral line image cubes at ~30 arcsec resolution and ~1.6 mJy/beam per 4 km/s channel sensitivity. ASKAP's instantaneous field of view at 1.4 GHz, delivered by the PAF's 36 beams, is about 30 sq deg. At an integrated signal-to-noise ratio of five, WALLABY is expected to detect over half a million galaxies with a mean redshift of z ~ 0.05 (~200 Mpc). The scientific goals of WALLABY include: (a) a census of gas-rich galaxies in the vicinity of the Local Group; (b) a study of the HI properties of galaxies, groups and clusters, in particular the influence of the environment on galaxy evolution; and (c) the refinement of cosmological parameters using the spatial and redshift distribution of low-bias gas-rich galaxies. For context we provide an overview of previous large-scale HI surveys. Combined with existing and new multi-wavelength sky surveys, WALLABY will enable an exciting new generation of panchromatic studies of the Local Universe. - First results from the WALLABY pilot survey are revealed, with initial data products publicly available in the CSIRO ASKAP Science Data Archive (CASDA).

Two comments on adhesion

The adhesion paradox refers to the observation that for most solid objects no adhesion can be detected when they are separated from a state of molecular contact. The adhesion paradox results from surface roughness, and we present experimental and theoretical results which shows that adhesion in most cases is "killed" by the longest wavelength roughness. Adhesion experiments between a human finger and a clean glass plate were carried out, and for a dry finger, no macroscopic adhesion occurred. We suggest that the observed decrease in the contact area with increasing shear force results from non-adhesive finger-glass contact mechanics, involving large deformations of a complex layered material.

Cylinder-flat contact mechanics during sliding

Using molecular dynamics (MD) we study the dependency of the contact mechanics on the sliding speed when an elastic block (cylinder) with a ${\rm cos} (q_0 x)$ surface height profile is sliding in adhesive contact on a rigid flat substrate. The atoms on the block interact with the substrate atoms by Lennard-Jones (LJ) potentials, and we consider both commensurate and(nearly) incommensurate contacts. For the incommensurate system the friction force fluctuates between positive and negative values, with an amplitude proportional to the sliding speed, but with the average close to zero. For the commensurate system the (time-averaged) friction force is much larger and nearly velocity independent. For both type of systems the width of the contact region is velocity independent even when, for the commensurate case, the frictional shear stress increases from zero (before sliding) to $\approx 0.1 \ {\rm MPa}$ during sliding. This frictional shear stress, and the elastic modulus used, are typical for Polydimethylsiloxan (PDMS) rubber sliding on a glass surface, and we conclude that the reduction in the contact area observed in some experiments when increasing the tangential force must be due to effects not included in our model study, such as viscoelasticity or elastic nonlinearity

The nature of short-ranged correlations in nuclear systems

We apply ideas of the parquet-diagram and optimized Fermi-hypernetted chain methods to determine the short-range structure of the pair wave function in neutron matter and compare these with Bethe-Goldstone results and those of low-order variational calculations. It is shown that the induced interaction, describing the exchange of density, spin, and tensor fluctuations, has a profound influence on the short-ranged structure of the pair wave function and, hence, on effective interactions in neutron matter.

Retrieving scattering clouds and disequilibrium chemistry in the atmosphere of HR 8799e

Clouds are ubiquitous in exoplanet atmospheres and represent a challenge for the model interpretation of their spectra. Complex cloud models are too numerically costly for generating a large number of spectra, while more efficient models may be too strongly simplified. We aim to constrain the atmospheric properties of the directly imaged planet HR 8799e with a free retrieval approach. We use our radiative transfer code petitRADTRANS for generating spectra, which we couple to the PyMultiNest tool. We added the effect of multiple scattering which is important for treating clouds. Two cloud model parameterizations are tested: the first incorporates the mixing and settling of condensates, the second simply parameterizes the functional form of the opacity. In mock retrievals, using an inadequate cloud model may result in atmospheres that are more isothermal and less cloudy than the input. Applying our framework on observations of HR 8799e made with the GPI, SPHERE and GRAVITY, we find a cloudy atmosphere governed by disequilibrium chemistry, confirming previous analyses. We retrieve that ${\rm C/O}=0.60_{-0.08}^{+0.07}$. Other models have not yet produced a well constrained C/O value for this planet. The retrieved C/O values of both cloud models are consistent, while leading to different atmospheric structures: cloudy, or more isothermal and less cloudy. Fitting the observations with the self-consistent Exo-REM model leads to comparable results, while not constraining C/O. With data from the most sensitive instruments, retrieval analyses of directly imaged planets are possible. The inferred C/O ratio of HR 8799e is independent of the cloud model and thus appears to be a robust. This C/O is consistent with stellar, which could indicate that the HR 8799e formed outside the CO$_2$ or CO iceline. As it is the innermost planet of the system, this constraint could apply to all HR 8799 planets.

Light-wave Control of Non-equilibrium Correlated States using Quantum Femtosecond Magnetism and Time-Periodic Modulation of Coherent Transport

Lightwave quantum electronics utilizes the oscillating carrier wave of intense laser fields to control quantum materials properties. Using quantum kinetic equations of motion, we describe lightwave-driven nonlinear quantum transport of electronic spin and charge with simultaneous quantum fluctuations of non-collinear local spins. During cycles of field oscillations, spin-charge inter-atomic quantum excitations trigger non-adiabatic time evolution of an antiferromagnetic insulator state into a metallic non-equilibrium state with transient magnetization. Lightwave modulation of electronic hopping changes the energy landscape and establishes a non-thermal pathway to laser-induced transitions in correlated systems with strong local magnetic exchange interactions.

The Expected Jacobian Outerproduct: Theory and Empirics

The expected gradient outerproduct (EGOP) of an unknown regression function is an operator that arises in the theory of multi-index regression, and is known to recover those directions that are most relevant to predicting the output. However, work on the EGOP, including that on its cheap estimators, is restricted to the regression setting. In this work, we adapt this operator to the multi-class setting, which we dub the expected Jacobian outerproduct (EJOP). Moreover, we propose a simple rough estimator of the EJOP and show that somewhat surprisingly, it remains statistically consistent under mild assumptions. Furthermore, we show that the eigenvalues and eigenspaces also remain consistent. Finally, we show that the estimated EJOP can be used as a metric to yield improvements in real-world non-parametric classification tasks: both by its use as a metric, and also as cheap initialization in metric learning tasks.

Insight-HXMT insight into switch of the accretion mode: the case of the X-ray pulsar 4U 1901+03

We use the In data collected during the 2019 outburst from X-ray pulsar 4U 1901+03 to complement the orbital parameters reported by Fermi/GBM. Using the Insight-HXMT, we examine the correlation between the derivative of the intrinsic spin frequency and bolometric flux based on accretion torque models. It was found that the pulse profiles significantly evolve during the outburst. The existence of two types of the profile's pattern discovered in the Insight-HXMT data indicates that this source experienced transition between a super-critical and a sub-critical accretion regime during its 2019 outburst. Based on the evolution of the pulse profiles and the torque model, we derive the distance to 4U 1901+03 as 12.4+-0.2 kpc.
