Signatures of long-range-correlated disorder in the magnetotransport of ultrathin topological insulators

In an ultrathin topological insulator (TI) film, a hybridization gap opens in the TI surface states, and the system is expected to become either a trivial insulator or a quantum spin Hall insulator when the chemical potential is within the hybridization gap. Here we show, however, that these insulating states are destroyed by the presence of a large and long-range-correlated disorder potential, which converts the expected insulator into a metal. We perform transport measurements in ultrathin, dual-gated topological insulator films as a function of temperature, gate voltage, and magnetic field, and we observe a metallic-like, non-quantized conductivity, which exhibits a weak antilocalization-like cusp at the low magnetic field and gives way to a nonsaturating linear magnetoresistance at large field. We explain these results by considering the disordered network of electron- and hole-type puddles induced by charged impurities. We argue theoretically that such disorder can produce an insulator-to-metal transition as a function of increasing disorder strength, and we derive a condition on the band gap and the impurity concentration necessary to observe the insulating state. We also explain the linear magnetoresistance in terms of strong spatial fluctuations of the local conductivity, using both numerical simulations and a theoretical scaling argument.

Electromagnetic form factors from the fifth dimension

We analyse various $U(1)_{EM}$ form factors of mesons at strong coupling in an $\mathcal{N}=2$ flavored version of $\mathcal{N}=4$ $SYM$ which becomes conformal in the UV. The quark mass breaks the conformal symmetry in the IR and generates a mass gap. In the appropriate limit, the gravity dual is described in terms of probe $D7$-branes in $AdS_5\times S^5$. By studying the $D7$ fluctuations we find the suitable terms in a "meson effective theory" which allow us to compute the desired form factors, namely the $γπρ$ and $γf_0ρ$ transition form factors. At large $q^2$ we find perfect agreement with the naive parton model counting, which is a consequence of the conformal nature of both QCD and our model in the UV. By using the same tools, we can compute the $γ^*γ^*π$ form factor. However this channel is more subtle and comparisons to the QCD result are more involved.

Goldstone Bosons and Global Strings in a Warped Resolved Conifold

A warped resolved conifold background of type IIB theory, constructed in hep-th/0701064, is dual to the supersymmetric $SU(N)\times SU(N)$ gauge theory with a vacuum expectation value (VEV) for one of the bifundamental chiral superfields. This VEV breaks both the superconformal invariance and the baryonic symmetry. The absolute value of the VEV controls the resolution parameter of the conifold. In this paper we study the phase of the VEV, which corresponds to the Goldstone boson of the broken symmetry. We explicitly construct the linearized perturbation of the 4-form R-R potential that contains the Goldstone boson. On general grounds, the theory should contain global strings which create a monodromy of the pseudoscalar Goldstone boson field. We identify these strings with the $D3$-branes wrapping the two-cycle at the tip of the warped resolved conifold.

Matrix Big Brunch

Following the holographic description of linear dilaton null Cosmologies with a Big Bang in terms of Matrix String Theory put forward by Craps, Sethi and Verlinde, we propose an extended background describing a Universe including both Big Bang and Big Crunch singularities. This belongs to a class of exact string backgrounds and is perturbative in the string coupling far away from the singularities, both of which can be resolved using Matrix String Theory. We provide a simple theory capable of describing the complete evolution of this closed Universe.

A heat-and-pull rig for fiber taper fabrication

We describe a reproducible method of fabricating adiabatic tapers with 3-4 micron diameter. The method is based on a heat-and-pull rig, whereby a CO2 laser is continuously scanned across a length of fiber that is being pulled synchronously. Our system relies on a CO2 mirror mounted on a geared stepper motor in order to scan the laser beam across the taper region. We show that this system offers a reliable alternative to more traditional rigs incorporating galvanometer scanners. We have routinely obtained transmission losses between 0.1 and 0.3 dB indicating the satisfactory production of adiabatic tapers. The operation of the rig is described in detail and an analysis on the produced tapers is provided. The flexibility of the rig is demonstrated by fabricating prolate dielectric microresonators using a microtapering technique. Such a rig is of interest to a range of fields that require tapered fiber fabrication such as microcavity-taper coupling, atom guiding along a tapered fiber, optical fiber sensing and the fabrication of fused biconical tapered couplers.

Mixing of Quantum Walk on Circulant Bunkbeds

We give new observations on the mixing dynamics of a continuous-time quantum walk on circulants and their bunkbed extensions. These bunkbeds are defined through two standard graph operators: the join G + H and the Cartesian product of graphs G and H.Our results include the following: 1. The quantum walk is average uniform mixing on circulants with bounded eigenvalue multiplicity. This extends a known fact about the cycles. 2. Explicit analysis of the probability distribution of the quantum walk on the join of circulants. This explains why complete partite graphs are not average uniform mixing, using the fact the complete n-vertex graph is the join of a 1-vertex graph and the (n-1)-vertex complete graph, and that the complete m-partite graph, where each partition has size n, is the m-fold join of the empty n-vertex graph. 3. The quantum walk on the Cartesian product of a m-vertex path P and a circulant G, is average uniform mixing if G is. This highlights a difference between circulants and the hypercubes. Our proofs employ purely elementary arguments based on the spectra of the graphs.

Report of the Working Group on `W Mass and QCD' (Phenomenology Workshop on LEP2 Physics, Oxford, April 1997)

The W Mass and QCD Working Group discussed a wide variety of topics relating to present and future measurements of M(W) at LEP2, including QCD backgrounds to W+W- production. Particular attention was focused on experimental issues concerning the direct reconstruction and threshold mass measurements, and on theoretical and experimental issues concerning the four jet final state. This report summarises the main conclusions.
