Early results from the SVOM Observatory Science program

We present the organisation and early results from the Observatory Science program of the Space-based multi-band astronomical Variable Objects Monitor (SVOM), based on data collected between July 2024 and December 2025. Although primarily designed for gamma-ray burst studies, SVOM's wide-field, multi-wavelength instruments enable a broad range of high-energy astrophysical investigations. We summarize the execution and performance of the General Program and Target-of-Opportunity observations, and we describe the frameworks used for serendipitous source detection and monitoring with the ECLAIRs coded-mask instrument. Over this period, SVOM carried out more than a thousand pointed observations and detected several hundred non-GRB high-energy sources, mainly X-ray binaries, as well as blazars, stellar flares, magnetars, and unidentified events. We highlight some key results, including the monitoring of the microquasar Cygnus X-1, the detection of burst oscillations from the Low-Mass X-ray Binary 4U 0614+091, the spectral-state monitoring of Aql X-1, the first SVOM detection of an X-ray blazar flare from 1ES 1959+650, and observations of a stellar flare from HD 22468. These results demonstrate SVOM's strong capabilities for time-domain astrophysics beyond its core GRB program.

SVOM discovery of a strong X-ray outburst of the blazar 1ES~1959+650 and multi-wavelength follow-up with the Neil Gehrels Swift observatory

On December 6, 2024, 1ES 1959+650, one of the X-ray brightest blazars known, underwent a high-amplitude X-ray outburst detected by SVOM, the first such discovery with this mission. The source was subsequently monitored with SVOM and Swift from December 2024 to March 2025. We report the detection and multi-wavelength follow-up of this event, and describe the temporal and spectral evolution observed during the campaign. Data from SVOM/MXT, SVOM/ECLAIRs, and Swift/XRT were analyzed with log-parabola models to track flux and spectral variability. The source was detected in a bright state over the 0.3-50 keV range. During the three months of monitoring, the X-ray flux varied significantly, showing episodes of spectral hardening at high flux levels. The spectral curvature evolved more irregularly and did not show a clear trend with flux. A shift of the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) synchrotron peak to higher energies is seen when the flux increases. This constitutes the first blazar outburst discovered in X-rays by SVOM. The coordinated follow-up with Swift provided continuous coverage of the flare and highlights the strong complementarity of the two missions for time-domain studies of blazars. The flare shows no clear signatures of either Fermi I or Fermi II acceleration, suggesting a mixed Fermi I/II scenario.

Positive solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for energy critical and supercritical nonlinearities

We consider positive and spatially decaying solutions to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a harmonic potential. For the energy-critical case, there exists a ground state if and only if the frequency belongs to (1,3) in three dimensions and in (0,d) in d dimensions. We give a precise description on asymptotic behaviors of the ground state up to the leading order term for different values of d. For the energy-supercritical case, there exists a singular solution for some frequency in (0,d). We compute the Morse index of the singular solution in the class of radial functions and show that the Morse index is infinite in the oscillatory case, is equal to 1 or 2 in the monotone case for nonlinearity powers not large enough and is equal to 1 in the monotone case for nonlinearity power sufficiently large.

Mean-variance portfolio selection with dynamic attention behavior in a hidden Markov model

In this paper, we study closed-loop equilibrium strategies for mean-variance portfolio selection problem in a hidden Markov model with dynamic attention behavior. In addition to the investment strategy, the investor's attention to news is introduced as a control of the accuracy of the news signal process. The objective is to find equilibrium strategies by numerically solving an extended HJB equation by using Markov chain approximation method. An iterative algorithm is constructed and its convergence is established. Numerical examples are also provided to illustrate the results.

The SVOM Mission

The Sino-French space mission SVOM is mainly designed to detect, localize and follow-up Gamma-Ray Bursts and other high-energy transients. The satellite, to be launched mid 2023, embarks two wide-field gamma-ray instruments and two narrow-field telescopes operating at X-ray and optical wavelengths. It is complemented by a dedicated ground segment encompassing a set of wide-field optical cameras and two 1-meter class follow-up telescopes. In this contribution, we describe the main characteristics of the mission and discuss its scientific rationale and some original GRB studies that it will enable.

The first six months of the Advanced LIGO's and Advanced Virgo's third observing run with GRANDMA

We present the Global Rapid Advanced Network Devoted to the Multi-messenger Addicts (GRANDMA). The network consists of 21 telescopes with both photometric and spectroscopic facilities. They are connected together thanks to a dedicated infrastructure. The network aims at coordinating the observations of large sky position estimates of transient events to enhance their follow-up and reduce the delay between the initial detection and the optical confirmation. The GRANDMA program mainly focuses on follow-up of gravitational-wave alerts to find and characterise the electromagnetic counterpart during the third observational campaign of the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors. But it allows for any follow-up of transient alerts involving neutrinos or gamma-ray bursts, even with poor spatial localisation. We present the different facilities, tools, and methods we developed for this network, and show its efficiency using observations of LIGO/Virgo S190425z, a binary neutron star merger candidate. We furthermore report on all GRANDMA follow-up observations performed during the first six months of the LIGO-Virgo observational campaign, and we derive constraints on the kilonova properties assuming that the events' locations were imaged by our telescopes.

Charge effects in donor doped perovskite ferroelectrics

Doping is a widely used method to tune physical properties of ferroelectric perovskites. Since doping can induce charges due to the substitution of certain elements, charge effects shall be considered in doped samples. To understand how charges can affect the system, we incorporate the dipole-charge interaction into our simulations, where the pinched hysteresis loops can well be reproduced. Two charge compensation models are proposed and numerically investigated to understand how lanthanum doping affect BaTiO$_{3}$'s ferroelectric phase transition temperature and hysteresis loop. The consequences of the two charge compensation models are compared and discussed.

Blowup solutions for stochastic parabolic equations

In this short paper, we are concerned with the blowup phenomenon of stochastic parabolic equations. By using comparison principle and the results of deterministic parabolic equations, we obtain blowup results of solutions for stochastic parabolic equations.

Understanding doped perovskite ferroelectrics with defective dipole model

While doping is widely used for tuning physical properties of perovskites in experiments, it remains a challenge to exactly know how doping achieves the desired effects. Here, we propose an empirical and computationally tractable model to understand the effects of doping with Fe-doped BaTiO$_{3}$ as an example. This model assumes that the lattice sites occupied by Fe ion and its nearest six neighbors lose their ability to polarize, giving rise to a small cluster of defective dipoles. Employing this model in Monte-Carlo simulations, many important features like reduced polarization and the convergence of phase transition temperatures, which have been observed experimentally in acceptor doped systems, are successfully obtained. Based on microscopic information of dipole configurations, we provide insights into the driving forces behind doping effects and propose that active dipoles, which exist in proximity to the defective dipoles, can account for experimentally observed phenomena. Close attention to these dipoles are necessary to understand and predict doping effects.

Infinite time blow-up for the fractional heat equation with critical exponent

We consider positive solutions for the fractional heat equation with critical exponent \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} u_t = -(-Δ)^{s}u + u^{\frac{n+2s}{n-2s}}\text{ in } Ω\times (0, \infty), u = 0\text{ on } (\mathbb{R}^n\setminus Ω)\times (0, \infty), u(\cdot, 0) = u_0\text{ in }\mathbb{R}^n, \end{cases} \end{equation*} where $Ω$ is a smooth bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n > 4s$, $s\in (0, 1)$, $u:\mathbb{R}^n\times [0, \infty)\to \mathbb{R}$ and $u_0$ is a positive smooth initial datum with $u_0|_{\mathbb{R}^n\setminus Ω} = 0$. We prove the existence of $u_0$ such that the solution blows up precisely at prescribed distinct points $q_1,\cdots, q_k$ in $Ω$ as $t\to +\infty$. The main ingredient of the proofs is a new inner-outer gluing scheme for the fractional parabolic problems.

A magnetic topological semimetal Sr1-yMn1-zSb2 (y, z< 0.1)

Weyl (WSMs) evolve from Dirac semimetals in the presence of broken time-reversal symmetry (TRS) or space-inversion symmetry. The WSM phases in TaAs-class materials and photonic crystals are due to the loss of space-inversion symmetry. For TRS-breaking WSMs, despite numerous theoretical and experimental efforts, few examples have been reported. In this Article, we report a new type of magnetic semimetal Sr1-yMn1-zSb2 (y,z<0.1) with nearly massless relativistic fermion behaviour (m*=0.04-0.05m0, where m0 is the free electron mass). This material exhibits a ferromagnetic order for 304K < T < 565K, but a canted antiferromagnetic order with a ferromagnetic component for T < 304K. The combination of relativistic fermion behaviour and ferromagnetism in Sr1-yMn1-zSb2 offers a rare opportunity to investigate the interplay between relativistic fermions and spontaneous TRS breaking.

Consensus problems with arbitrary sign-preserving nonlinearities

This paper studies consensus problems for multi-agent systems defined on directed graphs where the consensus dynamics involves nonlinear and discontinuous functions. Sufficient conditions, involving the nonlinear functions and the topology of the underlying graph, for the agents to converge to consensus are provided. For a special case, namely the multi-agent system defined on a strongly connected graph with continuous functions, we show the convergence by using a port-Hamiltonian formulation.

Nondegeneracy of half-harmonic maps from $\mathbb{R}$ into $\mathbb{S}^1$

We prove that the standard half-harmonic map $U:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{S}^1$ defined by \begin{equation*} x\to \begin{pmatrix} \frac{x^2-1}{x^2+1} \frac{-2x}{x^2+1} \end{pmatrix} \end{equation*} is nondegenerate in the sense that all bounded solutions of the linearized half-harmonic map equation are linear combinations of three functions corresponding to rigid motions (dilation, translation and rotation) of $U$.

The Deep and Transient Universe in the SVOM Era: New Challenges and Opportunities - Scientific prospects of the SVOM mission

To take advantage of the astrophysical potential of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs), Chinese and French astrophysicists have engaged the SVOM mission (Space-based multi-band astronomical Variable Objects Monitor). Major advances in GRB studies resulting from the synergy between space and ground observations, the SVOM mission implements space and ground instrumentation. The scientific objectives of the mission put a special emphasis on two categories of GRBs: very distant GRBs at z$>$5 which constitute exceptional cosmological probes, and faint/soft nearby GRBs which allow probing the nature of the progenitors and the physics at work in the explosion. These goals have a major impact on the design of the mission: the on-board hard X-ray imager is sensitive down to 4 keV and computes on line image and rate triggers, and the follow-up telescopes on the ground are sensitive in the NIR. At the beginning of the next decade, SVOM will be the main provider of GRB positions and spectral parameters on very short time scale. The SVOM instruments will operate simultaneously with a wide range of powerful astronomical devices. This rare instrumental conjunction, combined with the relevance of the scientific topics connected with GRB studies, warrants a remarkable scientific return for SVOM. In addition, the SVOM instrumentation, primarily designed for GRB studies, composes a unique multi-wavelength observatory with rapid slew capability that will find multiple applications for the whole astronomy community beyond the specific objectives linked to GRBs. This report lists the scientific themes that will benefit from observations made with SVOM, whether they are specific GRB topics, or more generally all the issues that can take advantage of the multi-wavelength capabilities of SVOM.

Effects of topological edge states on the thermoelectric properties of Bi nanoribbons

Using first-principles calculations combined with Boltzmann transport theory, we investigate the effects of topological edge states on the thermoelectric properties of Bi nanoribbons. It is found that there is a competition between the edge and bulk contributions to the Seebeck coefficients. However, the electronic transport of the system is dominated by the edge states because of its much larger electrical conductivity. As a consequence, a room temperature value exceeding 3.0 could be achieved for both p- and n-type systems when the relaxation time ratio between the edge and the bulk states is tuned to be 1000. Our theoretical study suggests that the utilization of topological edge states might be a promising approach to cross the threshold of the industrial application of thermoelectricity.

Thermoelectric properties of graphyne from first-principles calculations

The two-dimensional graphene-like carbon allotrope, graphyne, has been recently fabricated and exhibits many interesting electronic properties. In this work, we investigate the thermoelectric properties of γ-graphyne by performing first-principles calculations combined with Boltzmann transport theory for both electron and phonon. The carrier relaxation time is accurately evaluated from the ultra-dense electron-phonon coupling matrix elements calculated by adopting the density functional perturbation theory and Wannier interpolation, rather than the generally used deformation potential theory which only considers the electron-acoustic phonon scattering. It is found that the thermoelectric performance of γ-graphyne exhibits a strong dependence on the temperature and carrier type. At an intermediate temperature of 600 K, a maximum ZT value of 1.5 and 1.0 can be achieved for the p- and n-type systems, respectively.

Understanding the electronic and phonon transport properties of thermoelectric material BiCuSeO: a first-principles study

Using first-principles pseudopotential method and Boltzmann transport theory, we give a comprehensive understanding of the electronic and phonon transport properties of thermoelectric material BiCuSeO. By choosing proper hybrid functional for the exchange-correlation energy, we find that the system is semiconducting with a direct band gap of ~0.8 eV, which is quite different from those obtained previously using standard functionals. Detailed analysis of a three-dimensional energy band structure indicates that there is a valley degeneracy of eight around the valence band maximum, which leads to a sharp density of states and is responsible for a large p-type Seebeck coefficient. Moreover, we find that the density of states effective masses are much larger and results in very low hole mobility of BiCuSeO. On the other hand, we find larger atomic displacement parameters for the Cu atoms, which indicates that the stronger anharmonicity of BiCuSeO may originate from the rattling behavior of Cu instead of previously believed Bi atoms.

Molecular dynamics simulations of the lattice thermal conductivity of CuInTe2

The lattice thermal conductivity of thermoelectric material CuInTe2 is predicted using classical molecular dynamics simulations, where a simple but effective Morse-type interatomic potential is constructed by fitting first-principles total energy calculations. In a broad temperature range from 300 to 900 K, our simulated results agree well with those measured experimentally, as well as those obtained from phonon Boltzmann transport equation. By introducing the Cd impurity and Cu vacancy, the thermal conductivity of CuInTe2 can be effectively reduced to further enhance the thermoelectric performance of this chalcopyrite compound.
