Magnetic phase diagram, magnetoelastic coupling and Grüneisen scaling in CoTiO$_3$

High-quality single crystals of CoTiO$_3$ are grown and used to elucidate in detail structural and magnetostructural effects by means of high-resolution capacitance dilatometry studies in fields up to 15 T which are complemented by specific heat and magnetization measurements. In addition, we refine the single-crystal structure of the ilmenite ($R\bar{3}$) phase. At the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature $T_\mathrm{N}$, pronounced $λ$-shaped anomaly in the thermal expansion coefficients signals shrinking of both the $c$ and $b$ axes, indicating strong magnetoelastic coupling with uniaxial pressure along $c$ yielding six times larger effect on $T_\mathrm{N}$ than the pressure applied in-plane. The hydrostatic pressure dependency derived by means of Grüneisen analysis amounts to $\partial T_\mathrm{N}/ \partial p\approx 2.7(4)$~K/GPa. The high-field magnetization studies in static and pulsed magnetic fields up to 60~T along with high-field thermal expansion measurements facilitate in constructing the complete anisotropic magnetic phase diagram of CoTiO$_3$. While the results confirm the presence of significant magnetodielectric coupling, our data show that magnetism drives the observed structural, dielectric, and magnetic changes both in the short-range ordered regime well-above $T_\mathrm{N}$ as well as in the long-range magnetically ordered phase.

Exceptional field dependence of antiferromagnetic magnons in LiFePO$_4$

Low-energy magnon excitations in magnetoelectric LiFePO$_4$ have been investigated by high-frequency high-field electron spin resonance spectroscopy in magnetic fields up to B = 58 T and frequencies up to f = 745 GHz. For magnetic fields applied along the easy magnetic axis, the excitation gap softens and vanishes at the spin-flop field of BSF = 32 T before hardening again at higher fields. In addition, for B smaller than BSF we observe a resonance mode assigned to excitations due to Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM)-interactions, thereby evidencing sizable DM interaction of approx 150 micro eV in LiFePO4. Both the magnetisation and the excitations up to high magnetic fields are described in terms of a mean-field theory model which extends recent zero field inelastic neutron scattering results. Our results imply that magnetic interactions as well as magnetic anisotropy have a sizable quadratic field dependence which we attribute to significant magnetostriction.

Antisite disorder in the battery material LiFePO$_4$

We report detailed magnetometry and high-frequency electron spin resonance (HF-ESR) measurements which allow detailed investigation on Li-Fe antisite disorder in single-crystalline LiFePO$_4$, i.e., exchange of Fe$^{2+}$- and Li$^+$-ions. The data imply that magnetic moments of Fe$^{2+}$-ions at Li-positions do not participate in long-range antiferromagnetic order in LiFePO$_4$ but form quasi-free moments. Anisotropy axes of the magnetic moments at antisite defects are attached to the main crystallographic directions. The local character of these moments is confirmed by associated linear resonance branches detected by HF-ESR studies. Magnetic anisotropy shows up in significant zero-field splittings of $Δ= 220(3)$~GHz, $Δ'\sim50$~GHz and a highly anisotropic $g$-factor, i.e., $g_\mathrm{a} = 1.4$, $g_\mathrm{b} = 2.0$, and $g_\mathrm{c} = 6.3$. We demonstrate a general method to precisely determine Fe-antisite disorder in LiFePO$_4$ from magnetic studies which implies a density of paramagnetic Fe$^{2+}$-ions at Li-positions of 0.53\%.

Adiabatic variation of the charge-density-wave phase diagram in the 123 cuprate (Ca$_x$La$_{1-x}$)(Ba$_{1.75-x}$La$_{0.25+x}$)Cu$_3$O$_y$

In order to explain the emergence of the anomalous pseudogap state and high-temperature superconductivity in the cuprates, intense research activity over three decades has focused on unravelling the connection between the various instabilities of the underdoped regime. In the high-temperature superconductor (Ca$_x$La$_{1-x}$)(Ba$_{1.75-x}$La$_{0.25+x}$)Cu$_3$O$_y$ (CLBLCO) isovalent chemical substitution produces smooth changes to the CuO$_2$ plane buckling and the Cu(II)-to-apical-oxygen distance, allowing us to study the interdependence of charge-density-wave (CDW) order, superconductivity and the pseudogap at constant hole doping in two adiabatically connected representations of the 123 cuprate structure. In this study, resonant soft x-ray scattering measurements reveal the first observation of incommensurate CDW correlations in CLBLCO and demonstrate a lack of correlation between $T_{\text{CDW}}$ and the pseudogap crossover temperature ($T^{\ast}$). This result disfavours a scenario in which the opening of the pseudogap at $T^{\ast}$ results from fluctuating CDW correlations.

High-magnetic field phase diagram and failure of magnetic Grüneisen scaling in LiFePO$_4$

We report the magnetic phase diagram of single-crystalline LiFePO$_4$ in magnetic fields up to 58~T and present a detailed study of magneto-elastic coupling by means of high-resolution capacitance dilatometry. Large anomalies at \tn\ in the thermal expansion coefficient $α$ imply pronounced magneto-elastic coupling. Quantitative analysis yields the magnetic Grüneisen parameter $γ_{\rm mag}=6.7(5)\cdot 10^{-7}$~mol/J. The positive hydrostatic pressure dependence $dT_{\rm N}/dp = 1.46(11)$~K/GPa is dominated by uniaxial effects along the $a$-axis. Failure of Grüneisen scaling below $\approx 40$~K, i.e., below the peak temperature in the magneto-electric coupling coefficient [\onlinecite{toft2015anomalous}], implies several competing degrees of freedom and indicates relevance of recently observed hybrid excitations~[\onlinecite{yiu2017hybrid}]. A broad and strongly magnetic-field-dependent anomaly in $α$ in this temperature regime highlight the relevance of structure changes. Upon application of magnetic fields $B||b$-axis, a pronounced jump in the magnetisation implies spin-reorientation at $B_{\rm SF} = 32$~T as well as a precursing phase at 29~T and $T=1.5$~K. In a two-sublattice mean-field model, the saturation field $B_{\rm sat,b} = 64(2)$~T enables the determination of the effective antiferromagnetic exchange interaction $J_{\rm af} = 2.68(5)$~meV as well as the anisotropies $D_{\rm b} = -0.53(4)$~meV and $D_{\rm c} = 0.44(8)$~meV.

The decisive role of magnetic anisotropy in honeycomb layered Li$_3$Ni$_2$SbO$_6$ and Na$_3$Ni$_2$SbO$_6$

The decisive role of magnetic anisotropy even in systems with small anisotropy is illustrated for the honeycomb-layered antiferromagnets The decisive role of magnetic anisotropy in honeycomb layered Li$_3$Ni$_2$SbO$_6$ and Na$_3$Ni$_2$SbO$_6$ with $A$ = Li and Na. Both systems evolve long range magnetic order below $T_{\rm N}$ = 14 and 16.5~K, respectively. The magnetic phase diagrams obtained from static magnetisation studies up to 15~T imply competing antiferromagnetic phases and a tricritical point at $T_{\rm N}$. The phase boundaries are visible in the dynamic response of the antiferromagnetic resonance modes, too, which investigation by means of high frequency/high field electron spin resonance enables precise determination of magnetic anisotropy. The anisotropy gap amounts to $Δ= 360 \pm 2$~GHz in Na$_3$Ni$_2$SbO$_6$ while in Li$_3$Ni$_2$SbO$_6$ orthorhombicity is associated with $Δ= 198 \pm 4$ and $218 \pm 4$~GHz. Above $T_{\rm N}$, the data imply short-range antiferromagnetic order up to at least 80~K. The data suggest a crucial role of anisotropy for selecting the actual spin structure at $B=0$~T.

Magnetism and the phase diagram of MnSb$_2$O$_6$

Static and dynamic magnetic properties of P\={3}1$m$-phase MnSb$_2$O$_6$ have been studied by means of muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR), high-frequency electron spin resonance (HF-ESR), specific heat, and magnetisation studies in magnetic fields up to 25\,T. The data imply onset of long-range antiferromagnetic order at $T_N$ =~8~K and a spin-flop-like transition at $B_{SF}\approx 0.7 - 1$~T. Below $T_N$, muon asymmetry exhibits well-defined oscillations indicating a narrow distribution of the local fields. A competing antiferromagnetic phase appearing below $T_2$ =~5.3~K is evidenced by a step in the magnetisation and a slight kink of the relaxation rate. Above $T_N$ , both $μ$SR and HF-ESR data suggest short-range spin order. HF-ESR data show that local magnetic fields persist up to at least $12\cdot T_{\rm N}\approx 100$\,K. Analysis of the antiferromagnetic resonance modes and the thermodynamic spin-flop field suggest zero-field splitting of $Δ\approx 18$\,GHz which implies small but finite magnetic anisotropy.

Magnetoelastic coupling and ferromagnetic-type in-gap spin excitations in multiferroic $α$-Cu$_2$V$_2$O$_7$

We investigate magnetoelectric coupling and low-energy magnetic excitations in multiferroic $α$-Cu$_2$V$_2$O$_7$ by detailed thermal expansion, magnetostriction, specific heat and magnetization measurements in magnetic fields up to 15~T and by high-field/high-frequency electron spin resonance studies. Our data show negative thermal expansion in the temperature range $\leq 200$~K under study. Well-developed anomalies associated with the onset of multiferroic order (canted antiferromagnetism with a significant magnetic moment and ferroelectricity) imply pronounced coupling to the structure. We detect anomalous entropy changes in the temperature regime up to $\sim 80$~K which significantly exceed the spin entropy. Failure of Grüneisen scaling further confirms that several dominant ordering phenomena are concomitantly driving the multiferroic order. By applying external magnetic fields, anomalies in the thermal expansion and in the magnetization are separated. Noteworthy, the data clearly imply the development of a canted magnetic moment at temperatures above the structural anomaly. Low-field magnetostriction supports the scenario of exchange-striction driven multiferroicity. We observe low-energy magnetic excitations well below the antiferromagnetic gap, i.e., a ferromagnetic-type resonance branch associated with the canted magnetic moment arising from Dzyaloshinsii-Moriya interactions. The anisotropy parameter $\tilde{D}=1.6(1)$~meV indicates a sizeable ratio of DM- and isotropic magnetic exchange.

Electronic structure and magnetic properties of the strong-rung spin-1 ladder compound Rb$_3$Ni$_2$(NO$_3$)$_7$

Small single crystals of Rb$_3$Ni$_2$(NO$_3$)$_7$ were obtained by crystallization from anhydrous nitric acid solution of rubidium nitrate and nickel nitrate hexahydrate. The basic elements of the crystal structure of this new compound are isolated spin-1 two-leg ladders of Ni$^{2+}$-ions connected by (NO$_3$)$^-$ groups. The experimental data show the absence of long range magnetic order at T $\geq 2$~K. LDA+U calculations and the detailed analysis of the experimental data, i.e. of the magnetic susceptibility, the specific heat in magnetic fields up to 9~T, the magnetization, and of the high-frequency electron spin resonance data, enable quantitative estimates of the relevant parameters of the $S=1$ ladders in Rb$_3$Ni$_2$(NO$_3$)$_7$ . The rung-coupling $J_1 = 10.5$~K, the leg-coupling $J_2=1.6$~K, and the uniaxial anisotropy $|A| = 179$~GHz are obtained. The scenario of spin liquid quantum ground state is further corroborated by quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the magnetic susceptibility.

Magnetic anisotropy and the phase diagram of chiral MnSb2O6

The magnetic phase diagram and low-energy magnon excitations of structurally and magnetically chiral MnSb2O6 are reported. The specific heat and the static magnetization are investigated in magnetic fields up to 9 and 30 T, respectively, while the dynamicmagnetic properties are probed by X-band as well as tunable high-frequency electron spin-resonance spectroscopy. Below TN = 11.5 K, we observe antiferromagnetic resonance modes which imply small but finite planar anisotropy showing up in a zero-field splitting of 20 GHz. The data are well described by means of an easy-plane two-sublattice model with the anisotropy field BA = 0.02 T. The exchange field BE = 13 T is obtained from the saturation field derived from the pulsed-field magnetization. A crucial role of the small anisotropy for the spin structure is reflected by competing antiferromagnetic phases appearing, at T = 2 K, in small magnetic fields at BC1 $\approx$ 0.5 T and BC2 = 0.9 T. We discuss the results in terms of spin reorientation and of small magnetic fields favoring helical spin structure over the cycloidal ground state which, at B = 0, is stabilized by the planar anisotropy. Above TN, short-range magnetic correlations up to >=60 K and magnetic entropy changes well above TN reflect the frustrated triangular arrangement of Mn2+ ions in MnSb2O6.

Universal properties of the near-gap spectra of SmB6: dynamical mean-field calculations and photoemission experiments

Samarium hexaboride (SmB6) has been presumed to show a topological Kondo insulating state consisting of fully occupied quasiparticle bands in the concept of a Fermi liquid. This gap emerging below a small coherence temperature is the ultimate sign of coherence for a many-body system, which in addition induces a non-trivial topology. Here, we demonstrate that just one energy scale governs the gap formation in SmB6, which supports the Fermi liquid description. The temperature dependence of the gap formation in the mixed valence regime is captured within the dynamical mean field (DMFT) approximation to the periodic Anderson model (PAM). The scaling property of the model with the topological coherence temperature provides a strong connection to the photoemission spectra of SmB6. Our results suggest a simple way to compare a model study and an experiment result for heavy fermion insulators.

Electronic phase diagram of disordered Co doped BaFe2As2

Superconducting and normal state transport properties in iron pnictides are sensitive to disorder and impurity scattering. By investigation of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 thin films with varying Co concentration, we demonstrate that in the dirty limit the superconducting dome in the electronic phase diagram of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 shifts towards lower doping concentrations, which differs significantly from observations in single crystals. We show that especially in the underdoped regime superconducting transition temperatures higher than 27 K are possible.

Nanoscale electronic order in iron pnictides

The charge distribution in RFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ (R=La, Sm) iron pnictides is probed using As nuclear quadrupole resonance. Whereas undoped and optimally-doped or overdoped compounds feature a single charge environment, two charge environments are detected in the underdoped region. Spin-lattice relaxation measurements show their coexistence at the nanoscale. Together with the quantitative variations of the spectra with doping, they point to a local electronic order in the iron layers, where low- and high-doping-like regions would coexist. Implications for the interplay of static magnetism and superconductivity are discussed.

Scaling of normal-state transport properties of 1111 iron-pnictide superconductors

We show that the zero field normal-state resistivity above Tc for various levels of electron doping-both for underdoped, optimally, and overdoped LaO1-xFxFeAs, i.e. (x=0.05-0.075 and 0.1-0.2) and underdoped SmO1-xFxFeAs (x=0.06- 0.1) members of the 1111-iron-pnictide superconductor family-can be scaled in a broad temperature range from 20 to 300 K onto a single universal curve. The scaling was performed using the energy scale Delta, the resistivity rho(Delta) and the residual resistivity rho0 as scaling parameters as well as applying a recently proposed model-independent scaling method (H. G. Luo, Y. H. Su, and T. Xiang, Phys. Rev. B 77, 014529 (2008)). The scaling parameters have been calculated and the compositional variation of Delta has been determined. The existence of a universal metallic rho(T) curve is interpreted as an indication of a single mechanism which dominates the scattering of the charge carriers in LaO1-xFxFeAs (x= 0.05 to 0.075 and 0.1 to 0.2) and SmO1-xFxFeAs (x = 0.06 to 0.1) .

Crystal and magnetic structure of the oxypnictide superconductor LaO(1-x)FxFeAs: evidence for magnetoelastic coupling

High-resolution and high-flux neutron as well as X-ray powder-diffraction experiments were performed on the oxypnictide series LaO(1-x)FxFeAs with 0<x<0.15 in order to study the crystal and magnetic structure. The magnetic symmetry of the undoped compound corresponds to those reported for ReOFeAs (with Re a rare earth) and for AFe2As2 (A=Ba, Sr) materials. We find an ordered magnetic moment of 0.63(1)muB at 2 K in LaOFeAs, which is significantly larger than the values previously reported for this compound. A sizable ordered magnetic moment is observed up to a F-doping of 4.5% whereas there is no magnetic order for a sample with a F concentration of x=0.06. In the undoped sample, several interatomic distances and FeAs4 tetrahedra angles exhibit pronounced anomalies connected with the broad structural transition and with the onset of magnetism supporting the idea of strong magneto-elastic coupling in this material.

LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$ thin films: high upper critical fields and evidence of weak link behavior

High-quality superconducting LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$ thin films were grown on single crystalline LaAlO$_{3}$ substrates with critical temperatures (onset) up to 28 K. Resistive measurements in high magnetic fields up to 40 T reveal a paramagnetically limited upper critical field, $μ_{0}H_{c2}$(0) around 77 T and a remarkable steep slope of -7.5 T/K near $T_{c}$. From transport measurements we observed a weak link behavior in low magnetic fields and the evidence for a broad reversible regime.

Structural and electronic properties of LaFeAsO$_{0.85}$F$_{0.15}$ superconductor modified under neutron irradiation

The effect of atomic disorder induced by neutron irradiation on the crystal structure and electronic states near $E_F$ of the lightly overdoped LaFeAsO$_{0.85}$F$_{0.15}$ ($T_c=21K$) was studied by X-ray diffraction and $^{75}$As NMR. The irradiation of the polycrystalline sample by "moderate" neutron fluence of $Φ=(0;0.5;1.6)\cdot10^{19}cm^{-2}$ at $T=50^{\circ}C$ leads to the suppression of superconductivity. It is shown that neutron irradiation produces an anisotropic expansion of the tetragonal lattice almost due to an increase of the Fe-As distance. A partial loss of the 2D character of the FeAs layer is accompanied with a suppression of the gap-like feature in temperature dependence of the spin susceptibility. In the most disordered state the $^{75}$As spin-lattice relaxation rate follows the Korringa law $^{75}T_1^{-1} \sim T$, the thermal behavior being typical for an isotropic motion of the conducting electrons.

Strong Tc dependence for strained, epitaxial Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 thin films

Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 superconducting thin films have been grown on SrTiO3, (La,Sr)(Al,Ta)O3, LaAlO3 and YAlO3 (YAO) single crystal substrates by pulsed laser deposition. All the films, except on YAO, have been grown epitaxially without buffer layers. The films deposited on YAO contained 45 degree in-plane rotated grains and showed a broad superconducting transition. The onset Tc of the films is observed to increase from 16.2 K to 24.5 K with increasing c/a, mainly due to a slight distortion of the AsFe4 tetrahedron. From this correlation, we expect that higher superconducting transition temperatures than 24.5 K in a strained epitaxial film may be possible.
