Vacuum Potentials for the Two Only Permanent Free Particles, Proton and Electron. Appendix D: QEM Theory of IVBs, Higgs

The two only species of isolatable, smallest, or unit charges +e and -e present in nature interact with the universal vacuum in a polarisable dielectric representation through two uniquely defined vacuum potential functions. All of the non-composite subatomic particles containing one-unit charges, +e or -e, are therefore formed in terms of the IED model of the respective charges, of zero rest masses, oscillating in either of the two unique vacuum potential fields, together with the radiation waves of their own charges. In this paper we give a first principles treatment of the dynamics of charge in a dielectric vacuum, based on which, combined with solutions for the radiation waves obtained previously, we subsequently derive the vacuum potential function for a given charge q, which we show to be quadratic and consist each of quantised potential levels, giving therefore rise to quantised characteristic oscillation frequencies of the charge and accordingly quantised, sharply-defined masses of the IED particles. By further combining with relevant experimental properties as input information, we determine the IED particles built from the charges +e,-e at their first excited states in the respective vacuum potential wells to be the proton and the electron, the observationally two only stable (permanently lived) and "free" particles containing one-unit charges. Their antiparticles as produced in pair productions can be accordingly determined. The characteristics of all of the other more energetic non-composite subatomic particles can also be recognised. We finally discuss the energy condition for pair production, which requires two successive energy supplies to (1) first disintegrate the bound pair of vaculeon charges +e,-e composing a vacuuon of the vacuum and (2) impart masses to the disintegrated charges. Includes Part D, Quantum Electromagnetic Theory of the IVBs, Higgs.

A Theory of Gravity and General Relativity based on Quantum Electromagnetism

Based on first principles solutions in a unified framework of quantum mechanics and electromagnetism we predict the presence of a universal attractive depolarisation radiation (DR) Lorentz force ($F$) between quantum entities, each being either an IED matter particle or light quantum, in a vacuuonic dielectric vacuum. Given two quantum entities $i=1,2$ of either kind, of characteristic frequencies $ν_i^0$, masses $m_i^0=hν_i^0 / c^2$ and separated at a distance r^0, the solution is $F=- G m_1^0 m_2^0/ (r^0)^2$, where $G= χ_0^2 e^4/12 π^2 ε_0^2 ρ_λ$, $χ_0$ is the susceptibility and $ρ_λ$ is the reduced linear mass density of the dielectric vacuum. This force $F$ is accurate at the weak $F$ limit and resembles in all respects Newton's gravity; hence $G$ is the gravitational constant. The DR wave fields and hence the gravity is propagated in the dielectric vacuum at the speed of light $c$; these can not be shielded by matter. A test particle $μ$ of mass $m^0$ at $r^0$ apart from a large mass $M$ is therefore gravitated by all of the building particles of M directly, by a total gravitational potential $V = -G M m^0/ r^0$. For a finite $V$ and hence a total Hamiltonian $H= m^0 c^2 +V$, solution for the eigenvalue equation of $μ$ presents a red-shift in the eigen frequency $ν= ν^0 (1- GM/r^0 c^2)$ and accordingly other wave variables. The quantum solutions combined with the wave nature of the gravity further lead to dilated gravito optical distance $r=r^0/(1- GM/r^0 c^2) $ and time $t=t^0/(1- GM/r^0 c^2) $, and modified Newton's gravity and Einstein's mass energy relation. Applications of these give predictions of the general relativistic effects manifested in the four classical test experiments of Einstein's general relativity (GR), in direct agreement with the experiments and the predictions given based on GR.

Continuous Emission of A Radiation Quantum

It is in accordance with such experiments as single photon self-interference that a photon, conveying one radiation energy quantum "$ h \times$ frequency", is spatially extensive and stretches an electromagnetic wave train. A wave train, hence an energy quantum, can only be emitted by its source gradually. In both the two processes the wave and "particle" attributes of the radiation field are simultaneously prominent, where an overall satisfactory theory has been lacking. This paper presents a first principles treatment, in a unified framework of the classical and quantum mechanics, of the latter process, the emission of a single radiation quantum based on the dynamics of the radiation-emitting source, a charged oscillator which is itself extensive across its confining potential well. During the emission of one single radiation quantum, the extensive charged oscillator undergoes a continuous radiation damping and is non-stationary. This process is in this work treated using a quasi stationary approach, whereby the classical equation of motion, which directly facilitates the correspondence principle for a particle oscillator, and the quantum wave equation are established for each sufficiently brief time interval. As an inevitable consequence of the division of the total time for emitting one single quantum, a fractional Planck constant $h$ is introduced. The solutions to the two simultaneous equations yield for the charged oscillator a continuously exponentially decaying Hamiltonian that is at the same time quantised with respect to the fractional-$h$ at any instant of time; and the radiation wave field emitted over time stretches a wave train of finite length. The total system of the source and radiation field maintains at any time (integer $n$ times) one whole energy quantum, $h \times$ frequency, in complete accordance with the notion of quantum mechanics and experiment.

Inference of the Universal Constancy of Planck Constant based on First Principles

Since its discovery by Max Planck in 1900, the Planck constant $h$ has been demonstrated to be an universal constant, and its numerical value has been accurately determined based on experiments. Up to the present however the physical origin of this fundamental constant has not been well understood, and the numerical value of it has not been {\it ab initio} predicted. $h$ is characteristic in two respects: 1) it is a universal constant with respect to all (quasi-) stationary dynamical processes of all matter particles and radiation fields, and 2) it has a specific numerical value. A theoretical inference of $h$, and a corresponding accounting for the physical origin of $h$, therefore needs be achieved in both respects. This paper presents a theoretical exploration in the first respect, a mathematical inference of the universal constancy of $h$, based on the second law of thermodynamics, the principle of least action and the probability theory.

Quantum Mechanical Probability of Electrodynamic Particle(s)

A distribution of electromagnetic fields presents a statistical assembly of a particular type, which is at scale h a quantum statistical assembly itself and has also been instrumental to concretisation of the basic probability assumption of quantum mechanics. Of specific concern in this discussion is an extensive train of radiation fields, of a total wave function ψ, which are continuously (re)emitted and (re)absorbed by an oscillatory (point) charge of a zero rest mass and yet a finite dynamical mass, with the waves and charge together making up an extensive undulatory IED particle. The IED particle will as any real particle be subject to interactions with the environmental fields and particles, hence to excitations, and therefore will explore all possible states over time; at scale $h$ the states are discrete. On the basis of the principles of statistics and statistical mechanics combined with first principles solutions for the IED particle, we derive for the IED particle the probability functions in position space, of a form |ψ|^2, and in dynamical-variable space.

Internally Electrodynamic Particle Model: Its Experimental Basis and Its Predictions

The internally electrodynamic (IED) particle model was derived based on overall experimental observations, with the IED process itself being built directly on three experimental facts, a) electric charges present with all material particles, b) an accelerated charge generates electromagnetic waves according to Maxwell's equations and Planck energy equation and c) source motion produces Doppler effect. A set of well-known basic particle equations and properties become predictable based on first principles solutions for the IED process; several key solutions achieved are outlined, including the de Broglie phase wave, de Broglie relations, Schrödinger equation, mass, Einstein mass-energy relation, Newton's law of gravity, single particle self interference, and electromagnetic radiation and absorption; these equations and properties have long been broadly experimentally validated or demonstrated. A specific solution also predicts the Doebner-Goldin equation which emerges to represent a form of long-sought quantum wave equation including gravity. A critical review of the key experiments is given which suggests that the IED process underlies the basic particle equations and properties not just sufficiently but also necessarily.

Self Interference of Single Electrodynamic Particle in Double Slit

It is by the long established fact in experiment and theory that electromagnetic waves, here as one component of an IED particle, passing a double slit will undergo self inference each, producing at a detector plane fringed intensities. The wave generating point charge of a zero rest mass, as the other component of the particle, is maintained a constant energy and speed by a repeated radiation reabsorption/reemission scheme, and in turn steered in direction in its linear motion by the reflected radiation field, and will thereby travel to the detector along (one of) the optical path(s) of the waves leading to a bright interference fringe. We elucidate the process formally based on first principles solutions for the IED particle and known principles for wave-matter interaction.

Gravity between Internally Electrodynamic Particles

We present a first-principles' prediction that two charged particles of masses M_1 and M_2 separated R apart in a dielectric vacuum act on each other always an attractive force in addition to other known forces in between. This component attractive force on one charge results as the Lorentz force in the radiation depolarization- and magnetic- fields of the other charge, being an attractive radiation force, and is in addition to the ordinary repulsive radiation force. The exact solution for the attractive radiation force is F_g=G' M_1M_2/R^2, an identical formula to Newton's law of gravitation. G'=χ_{0^*}e^4/4πε_0^2\hbar^2ρ_l is identifiable with Newton's gravitational constant, χ_{0^*} being the susceptibility and ρ_l the linear mass density of the vacuum, and the remaining fundamental constants of the usual meaning. The F_g force is conveyed by a transverse vacuuonic dipole-moment wave traveling at the velocity of light and can penetrate matter freely. In all of respects, the F_g force represents a viable cause of Newton's universal gravity.

Spectral Emission of Moving Atom

A renewed analysis of the H.E. Ives and G.R. Stilwell's experiment on moving hydrogen canal rays (J. Opt. Soc. Am., 1938, v.28, 215) concludes that the spectral emission of a moving atom exhibits always a redshift which informs not the direction of the atom's motion. The conclusion is also evident from a simple energy relation: atomic spectral radiation is emitted as an orbiting electron consumes a portion of its internal energy on transiting to a lower-energy state which however has in a moving atom an additional energy gain; this results in a redshift in the emission frequency. Based on auxiliary experimental information and a scheme for de Broglie particle formation, we give a vigorous elucidation of the mechanism for deceleration radiation of atomic electron; the corresponding prediction of the redshift is in complete agreement with the Ives and Stilwell's experimental formula.

Doebner-Goldin Equation for Electrodynamic Particle. The Implied Applications

We set up the Maxwell's equations and the corresponding classical wave equations for the electromagnetic waves which together with the generating source, a traveling oscillatory charge of zero rest mass, comprise a particle traveling in the force field of an usual conservative potential and an additional frictional force $f$. At the de Broglie wavelength scale and in the classic-velocity limit, the total wave equation decomposes into a component equation describing the particle kinetic motion, which for $f=0$ identifies with the usual linear Schrödinger equation as previously. The $f$-dependent probability density presents generally an observable diffusion current of a real diffusion constant; this and the particle's usual quantum diffusion current as a whole are under adiabatic condition conserved and obey the Fokker-Planck equation. The corresponding extra, $f$-dependent term in the Hamiltonian operator identifies with that obtained by H.-D. Doebner and G.A. Goldin. The friction produces to the particle's wave amplitude a damping that can describe well the effect due to a radiation (de)polarization field, which is always by-produced by the particle's oscillatory charge in a (nonpolar) dielectric medium. The radiation depolarization field in a dielectric vacuum has two separate significances: it participates to exert on another particle an attractive, depolarization radiation force which resembles in overall respects Newton's universal gravity as we showed earlier, and it exerts on the particle itself an attractive, self depolarization radiation force whose time rate gives directly the frictional force $f$.

Inference of Schrödinger's Equation from Classical-Mechanical Solution

We set up the classical wave equation for a particle formed of an oscillatory zero-rest-mass charge together with its resulting electromagnetic waves, traveling in a potential field $V$ in a susceptible vacuum. The waves are Doppler-displaced upon the source motion, and superpose into a total, traveling- and in turn a standing- beat wave, or de Broglie phase wave, described by a corresponding total classical wave equation. By back-substitution of the explicitly known total, standing beat wave function and upon appropriate reductions at classic-velocity limit, we separate out from the total a component wave equation describing the kinetic motion of particle, which is equivalent to the Schrödinger equation. The Schrödinger wave function follows to be the envelope function of the standing beat wave at classic-velocity limit.

Vacuum Structure and Potential

Based on overall experimental observations, especially the pair processes, I developed a model structure of the vacuum along with a basic-particle formation scheme begun in 2000 (with collaborator P-I Johansson). The model consists in that the vacuum is, briefly, filled of neutral but polarizable vacuuons, consisting each of a p-vaculeon and n- vaculeon of charges $+e$ and $-e$ of zero rest masses but with spin motions, assumed interacting each other with a Coulomb force. The model has been introduced in full in a book (Nova Sci, 2005) and referred to in a number of journal/E-print papers. I outline in this easier accessible paper the detailed derivation of the model and a corresponding quantitative determination of the vacuuon size.

Origin of Mass. Mass and Mass-Energy Equation from Classical-Mechanics Solution

We establish the classical wave equation for a particle formed of a massless oscillatory elementary charge generally also traveling, and the resulting electromagnetic waves, of a generally Doppler-effected angular frequency $\w$, in the vacuum in three dimensions. We obtain from the solutions the total energy of the particle wave to be $\eng=\hbarc\w$, $2π\hbarc$ being a function expressed in wave-medium parameters and identifiable as the Planck constant. In respect to the train of the waves as a whole traveling at the finite velocity of light $c$, $\eng=mc^2$ represents thereby the translational kinetic energy of the wavetrain, $m=\hbarc\w/c^2$ being its inertial mass and thereby the inertial mass of the particle. Based on the solutions we also write down a set of semi-empirical equations for the particle's de Broglie wave parameters. From the standpoint of overall modern experimental indications we comment on the origin of mass implied by the solution.

The superfluidity mechanism of He II

Based on a first principles treatment of the excitation states we show that superfluidity of superfluid $^4$He (He II) results from a reduction in the number of phonon wavevector $K$ states $\N2(K)$ to a level that is negligibly low when the fluid is confined e.g. in a narrow channel, yet wider than the helium atom correlation length, $Λ$. This is as a result of the $K$ discretization, a manifestation of the quantum confinement effect (QCE). The predicted relative viscosity of a confined superfluid has the characteristic order of magnitude of experimental data ($<10^{-6}$). Furthermore, we show that at the edges of the resulting energy gaps, the $\N2(K)$ presents discontinuity. When its corresponding energy exceeds the (first) gap, the superfluid flow exhibits a critical velocity $v_c$. Our evaluation of $v_c(d)$ versus the channel width $d$, constrained to satisfy energy conservation, is in good quantitative agreement with experimental data for channels with $d>10^{-6}$ m. Meanwhile, a sharp turn about $K\propto$ $ v_c$ in $\N2(K)$ resembles very well that of the experimental overshoot data. For narrower channels of $d<10^{-6}$ m $\le Λ$ in which the phonon excitation picture becomes inadequate, we instead represent the excitation in terms of single atoms with an effective mass, which yields a $v_c(d)$ in close agreement with experiment. Accordingly, the reduction in the number of atomic states results in superfluidity. The theoretical finding in this work, which can be termed the {\bf QCE superfluidity mechanism}, provides a consistent explanation for this puzzling phenomenon, the non-dissipative, superfluidity motion, of He II and could have a significant impact also on the understanding of other superfluids.

The Theory of Superfluidity of $^4$Helium

I present here a microscopic theory for the superfluidity of $^4$He (He II) derived from experiments, and answer its essential questions. With a "momenton" model, the superfluid is shown to feature as a "harmonic superfluid". In which a new bonding type, the "superfluid bond", is formed. Its activation causes the anomalous thermal excitation, the large excess of specific heat, etc. The superfluidity mechanism is recognized being connected to a quantum confinement effect. The theory predicts the basic properties of He II in overall agreements with experiments. The series novel concepts evolved here reverse the current perceptions of $^4$He, give significant impact to the understandings of other superfluids.
