Study on the magnetic field strength of NGC 300 ULX1

NGC 300 ULX1 is a pulsating ultraluminous X-ray source (PULX) with the longest spin period of $P\simeq31.6\,\rm s$ and a high spin-up rate of $\dot P\simeq5.56\times10^{-7}\,\rm s\,s^{-1}$ that is ever seen in the confirmed PULXs. In this paper, the inferred magnetic field of NGC 300 ULX1 is $\sim3.0\times10^{14}\,\rm G$ using the recent observed parameters after its first detection of pulsations. According to the evolved simulation of the magnetic field and the spin period, it will become a recycled pulsar or a millisecond pulsar under the conditions of the companion mass and the accretion rate limitation. We suggest that NGC 300 ULX1 is an accreting magnetar accounting for its super Eddington luminosity. We also propose that there might be other accreting magnetars in the confirmed PULXs. Such PULXs will be helpful for understanding the magnetar evolution and the millisecond pulsar formation whose magnetic field is stronger than $\sim10^{9}\,\rm G$.

Graphene and Carbon Nanotubes in Space

As the fourth most abundant element in the universe, carbon plays an important role in the physical and chemical evolution of the interstellar medium. Due to its unique property to form three different types of chemical bonds through sp^1, sp^2, and sp^3 hybridizations, carbon can be stabilized in various allotropes, including amorphous carbon, graphite, diamond, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, fullerenes, graphene, and carbon nanotubes.

The Carriers of the "Unidentified" Infrared Emission Features: Clues from Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons with Aliphatic Sidegroups

The "unidentified" infrared emission (UIE) features at 3.3, 6.2, 7.7, 8.6, and 11.3 $μ$m are ubiquitously seen in various astrophysical regions. The UIE features are characteristic of the stretching and bending vibrations of aromatic hydrocarbons. The 3.3 $μ$m feature resulting from aromatic C--H stretches is often accompanied by a weaker feature at 3.4 $μ$m often attributed to aliphatic C--H stretches. The ratio of the observed intensity of the 3.3 $μ$m aromatic C--H feature ($I_{3.3}$) to that of the 3.4 $μ$m aliphatic C--H feature ($I_{3.4}$) allows one to estimate the aliphatic fraction (i.e. $N_{\rm C,aliph}/N_{\rm C,arom}$, the number of C atoms in aliphatic units to that in aromatic rings) of the UIE carriers, provided the intrinsic oscillator strengths of the 3.3 $μ$m aromatic C--H stretch ($A_{3.3}$) and the 3.4 $μ$m aliphatic C--H stretch ($A_{3.4}$) are known. In this article we summarize the computational results on $A_{3.3}$ and $A_{3.4}$ and their implications for the aromaticity and aliphaticity of the UIE carriers. We use density functional theory and second-order perturbation theory to derive $A_{3.3}$ and $A_{3.4}$ from the infrared vibrational spectra of seven PAHs with various aliphatic substituents (e.g., methyl-, dimethyl-, ethyl-, propyl-, butyl-PAHs, and PAHs with unsaturated alkyl-chains). The mean band strengths of the aromatic ($A_{3.3}$) and aliphatic ($A_{3.4}$) C--H stretches are derived and then employed to estimate the aliphatic fraction of the UIE carriers by comparing $A_{3.4}$/$A_{3.3}$ with $I_{3.4}$/$I_{3.3}$. We conclude that the UIE emitters are predominantly aromatic, as revealed by the observationally-derived ratio <$I_{3.4}$/$I_{3.3}$> ~ 0.12 and the computationally-derived ratio <$A_{3.4}$/$A_{3.3}$> ~ 1.76 which suggest an upper limit of $N_{\rm C,aliph}/N_{\rm C,arom}$ ~ 0.02 for the aliphatic fraction of the UIE carriers.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons with Aliphatic Sidegroups: Intensity Scaling for the C-H Stretching Modes and Astrophysical Implications

The so-called unidentified infrared emission (UIE) features at 3.3, 6.2, 7.7, 8.6, and 11.3 $μ$m ubiquitously seen in a wide variety of astrophysical regions are generally attributed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules. Astronomical PAHs may have an aliphatic component as revealed by the detection in many UIE sources of the aliphatic C-H stretching feature at 3.4 $μ$m. The ratio of the observed intensity of the 3.4 $μ$m feature to that of the 3.3 $μ$m aromatic C-H feature allows one to estimate the aliphatic fraction of the UIE carriers. This requires the knowledge of the intrinsic oscillator strengths of the 3.3 $μ$m aromatic C-H stretch ($A_{3.3}$) and the 3.4 $μ$m aliphatic C-H stretch ($A_{3.4}$). Lacking experimental data on $A_{3.3}$ and $A_{3.4}$ for the UIE candidate materials, one often has to rely on quantum-chemical computations. Although the second-order Moller-Plesset (MP2) perturbation theory with a large basis set is more accurate than the B3LYP density functional theory, MP2 is computationally very demanding and impractical for large molecules. Based on methylated PAHs, we show here that, by scaling the band strengths computed at an inexpensive level (e.g., B3LYP/6-31G*) we are able to obtain band strengths as accurate as that computed at far more expensive levels (e.g., MP2/6-311+G(3df,3pd)).

Diffuse Interstellar Bands and the Ultraviolet Extinction Curves: The Missing Link Revisited

A large number of interstellar absorption features at ~ 4000Å -- 1.8 μm, known as the "diffuse interstellar bands" (DIBs), remains unidentified. Most recent works relate them to large polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules or ultrasmall carbonaceous grains which are also thought to be responsible for the 2175 Å extinction bump and/or the far ultraviolet (UV) extinction rise at $λ^{-1} > 5.9\ μm^{-1}$. Therefore, one might expect some relation between the UV extinction and DIBs. Such a relationship, if established, could put important constraints on the carrier of DIBs. Over the past four decades, whether DIBs are related to the shape of the UV extinction curves has been extensively investigated. However, the results are often inconsistent, partly due to the inconsistencies in characterizing the UV extinction. Here we re-examine the connection between the UV extinction curve and DIBs. We compile the extinction curves and the equivalent widths of 40 DIBs along 97 slightlines. We decompose the extinction curve into three Drude-like functions composed of the visible/near-infrared component, the 2175 Å bump, and the far-UV extinction at $λ^{-1} > 5.9\ μm^{-1}$. We argue that the wavelength-integrated far-UV extinction derived from this decomposition technique best measures the strength of the far-UV extinction. No correlation is found between the far-UV extinction and most (~90\%) of the DIBs. We have also shown that the color excess E(1300-1700), the extinction difference at 1300 Å and 1700 Å often used to measure the strength of the far-UV extinction, does not correlate with DIBs. Finally, we confirm the earlier findings of no correlation between the 2175 Å bump and DIBs or between the 2175 Å bump and the far-UV extinction.

The Carriers of the Interstellar Unidentified Infrared Emission Features: Constraints from the Interstellar C-H Stretching Features at 3.2-3.5 Micrometers

The unidentified infrared emission (UIE) features at 3.3, 6.2, 7.7, 8.6, and 11.3 micrometer, commonly attributed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules, have been recently ascribed to mixed aromatic/aliphatic organic nanoparticles. More recently, an upper limit of <9% on the aliphatic fraction (i.e., the fraction of carbon atoms in aliphatic form) of the UIE carriers based on the observed intensities of the 3.4 and 3.3 micrometer emission features by attributing them to aliphatic and aromatic C-H stretching modes, respectively, and assuming A_34./A_3.3~0.68 derived from a small set of aliphatic and aromatic compounds, where A_3.4 and A_3.3 are respectively the band strengths of the 3.4 micrometer aliphatic and 3.3 micrometer aromatic C-H bonds. To improve the estimate of the aliphatic fraction of the UIE carriers, here we analyze 35 UIE sources which exhibit both the 3.3 and 3.4 micrometer C-H features and determine I_3.4/I_3.3, the ratio of the power emitted from the 3.4 micrometer feature to that from the 3.3 micrometer feature. We derive the median ratio to be ~ 0.12. We employ density functional theory and second-order perturbation theory to compute A_3.4/A_3.3 for a range of methyl-substituted PAHs. The resulting A_3.4/A_3.3 ratio well exceeds 1.4, with an average ratio of ~1.76. By attributing the 3.4 micrometer feature exclusively to aliphatic C-H stretch (i.e., neglecting anharmonicity and superhydrogenation), we derive the fraction of C atoms in aliphatic form to be ~2%. We therefore conclude that the UIE emitters are predominantly aromatic.

Systematic enumeration of crystalline networks with only sp2 configuration in cubic lattices

Systematic enumeration of crystalline networks with some special topological characters is of considerable interest in both mathematics and crystallography. Based on the restriction of lattice in cubic and inequivalent nodes not exceeding three, a simple method is proposed for systematic searching for three-dimensional crystalline networks with only sp2-configuration nodes (C-sp2-TDTCNs). We systematically scan the cubic space groups from No.195 to No.230 and find many C-sp2-TDTCNs including all the previously proposed cubic ones. These C-sp2-TDTCNs are topologically intriguing and can be considered as good templates for searching carbon crystals with novel properties, predicting high pressure phases of element nitrogen and designing three-dimensional hydrocarbon crystals. Structure optimizations are considered by regrading these C-sp2-TDTCNs as carbon crystals and the corresponding energetic stability of these carbon crystals are evaluated, using the the density functional theory (DFT) based first-principle calculations. Our results are of wide interests in mathematics, condensed physics, crystallography and material science.

Cr-K Emission Line as a Constraint on the Progenitor Properties of Supernova Remnants

We perform a survey of the Cr, Mn and Fe-K emission lines in young supernova remnants (SNRs) with the Japanese X-ray astronomy satellite {\sl Suzaku}. The Cr and/or Mn emission lines are detected in 3C\,397 and 0519-69.0 for the first time. We also confirm the detection of these lines in Kepler, W49B, N103B and Cas A. We derive the line parameters (i.e., the line centroid energy, flux and equivalent width [EW]) for these six sources and perform a correlation analysis for the line center energies of Cr, Mn and Fe. Also included in the correlation analysis are Tycho and G344.7-0.1 for which the Cr, Mn and Fe-K line parameters were available in the literature through {\sl Suzaku} observations. We find that the line center energies of Cr correlates very well with that of Fe and that of Mn. This confirms our previous findings that the Cr, Mn and Fe are spatially co-located, share a similar ionization state, and have a common origin in the supernova nucleo-synthesis. We find that the ratio of the EW of the Cr emission line to that of Fe ($\EWR\equiv \EWCr/\EWFe$) provides useful constraints on the SNR progenitors and on the SN explosion mechanisms: for SNRs with $\EWR > 2%$, a type Ia origin is favored (e.g., N103B, G344.7-0.1, 3C\,397 and 0519-69.0); for SNRs with $\EWR < 2%$, they could be of either core-collpase origin or carbon-deflagration Ia origin.

A Tale of Two Mysteries in Interstellar Astrophysics: The 2175 Angstrom Extinction Bump and Diffuse Interstellar Bands

The diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) are ubiquitous absorption spectral features arising from the tenuous material in the space between stars -- the interstellar medium (ISM). Since their first detection nearly nine decades ago, over 400 DIBs have been observed in the visible and near-infrared wavelength range in both the Milky Way and external galaxies, both nearby and distant. However, the identity of the species responsible for these bands remains as one of the most enigmatic mysteries in astrophysics. An equally mysterious interstellar spectral signature is the 2175 Angstrom extinction bump, the strongest absorption feature observed in the ISM. Its carrier also remains unclear since its first detection 46 years ago. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules have long been proposed as a candidate for DIBs as their electronic transitions occur in the wavelength range where DIBs are often found. In recent years, the 2175 Angstrom extinction bump is also often attributed to the π--π* transition in PAHs. If PAHs are indeed responsible for both the 2175 Angstrom extinction feature and DIBs, their strengths may correlate. We perform an extensive literature search for lines of sight for which both the 2175 Angstrom extinction feature and DIBs have been measured. Unfortunately, we found no correlation between the strength of the 2175 Angstrom feature and the equivalent widths of the strongest DIBs. A possible explanation might be that DIBs are produced by small free gas-phase PAH molecules and ions, while the 2175 Angstrom bump is mainly from large PAHs or PAH clusters in condensed phase so that there is no tight correlation between DIBs and the 2175 Angstrom bump.

First-principles study of native point defects in Bi2Se3

Using first-principles method within the framework of the density functional theory, we study the influence of native point defect on the structural and electronic properties of Bi$_2$Se$_3$. Se vacancy in Bi$_2$Se$_3$ is a double donor, and Bi vacancy is a triple acceptor. Se antisite (Se$_{Bi}$) is always an active donor in the system because its donor level ($\varepsilon$(+1/0)) enters into the conduction band. Interestingly, Bi antisite(Bi$_{Se1}$) in Bi$_2$Se$_3$ is an amphoteric dopant, acting as a donor when $μ$$_e$$<$0.119eV (the material is typical p-type) and as an acceptor when $μ$$_e$$>$0.251eV (the material is typical n-type). The formation energies under different growth environments (such as Bi-rich or Se-rich) indicate that under Se-rich condition, Se$_{Bi}$ is the most stable native defect independent of electron chemical potential $μ$$_e$. Under Bi-rich condition, Se vacancy is the most stable native defect except for under the growth window as $μ$$_e$$>$0.262eV (the material is typical n-type) and $Δ$$μ$$_{Se}$$<$-0.459eV(Bi-rich), under such growth windows one negative charged Bi$_{Se1}$ is the most stable one.

Two semiconducting three-dimensional all-sp2 carbon allotropes

Using first-principles method, we investigate the energetic stability, dynamic stability and electronic properties of two three-dimensional (3D) all-sp2 carbon allotropes, sp2-diamond and cubic-graphite. The cubic-graphite was predicted by Michael O'Keeffe in 1992 (Phys. Rev. Lett., 68, 15, 1992.) possessing space group of Pn-3m (224), whereas the sp2-diamond with the space group Fd-3m (227) same as that of diamond has not been reported before. Our results indicate that sp2-diamond is more stable than previously proposed K4-carbon and T-carbon, and cubic-graphite is even more stable than superhard M-carbon, W-carbon and Z-carbon.The calculations on vibrational properties show that both structures are dynamically stable. Interestingly, both sp2-diamond and cubic-graphite behave as semiconductors which are contrary to previously proposed all-sp2 carbon allotropes. The sp2-diamond is a semiconductor with a direct band gap of 1.66 eV, and cubic-graphite is an indirect semiconductor with band gap of 2.89 eV. The very lower densities and entirely sp2 configures of sp2-diamond and cubic-graphite can be potentially applied in hydrogen-storage, photocatalysts and molecular sieves.

Level-Spacing Distributions of Planar Quasiperiodic Tight-Binding Models

We study the statistical properties of energy spectra of two-dimensional quasiperiodic tight-binding models. We demonstrate that the nearest-neighbor level spacing distributions of these non-random systems are well described by random matrix theory. Properly taking into account the symmetries of models defined on various finite approximants of quasiperiodic tilings, we find that the underlying universal level-spacing distribution is given by the Wigner-Dyson distribution of the Gaussian orthogonal random matrix ensemble. Our data allow us to see the differences between the Wigner surmise and the exact level-spacing distribution. In particular, our result differs from the critical level-spacing distribution computed at the metal-insulator transition in the three-dimensional Anderson model of disorder.
