Beyond Pixels: A Training-Free, Text-to-Text Framework for Remote Sensing Image Retrieval

Semantic retrieval of remote sensing (RS) images is a critical task fundamentally challenged by the \textquote{semantic gap}, the discrepancy between a model's low-level visual features and high-level human concepts. While large Vision-Language Models (VLMs) offer a promising path to bridge this gap, existing methods often rely on costly, domain-specific training, and there is a lack of benchmarks to evaluate the practical utility of VLM-generated text in a zero-shot retrieval context. To address this research gap, we introduce the Remote Sensing Rich Text (RSRT) dataset, a new benchmark featuring multiple structured captions per image. Based on this dataset, we propose a fully training-free, text-only retrieval reference called TRSLLaVA. Our methodology reformulates cross-modal retrieval as a text-to-text (T2T) matching problem, leveraging rich text descriptions as queries against a database of VLM-generated captions within a unified textual embedding space. This approach completely bypasses model training or fine-tuning. Experiments on the RSITMD and RSICD benchmarks show our training-free method is highly competitive with state-of-the-art supervised models. For instance, on RSITMD, our method achieves a mean Recall of 42.62\%, nearly doubling the 23.86\% of the standard zero-shot CLIP baseline and surpassing several top supervised models. This validates that high-quality semantic representation through structured text provides a powerful and cost-effective paradigm for remote sensing image retrieval.

The Interacting Energy Bands of Magic Angle Twisted Bilayer Graphene Revealed by the Quantum Twisting Microscope

Electron interactions in quantum materials fundamentally shape their energy bands and, with them, the material's most intriguing quantum phases. Magic angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) has emerged as a model system, where flat bands give rise to a variety of such phases, yet the precise nature of these bands has remained elusive due to the lack of high-resolution momentum space probes. Here, we use the quantum twisting microscope (QTM) to directly image the interacting energy bands of MATBG with unprecedented momentum and energy resolution. Away from the magic angle, the observed bands closely follow the single-particle theory. At the magic angle, however, we observe bands that are completely transformed by interactions, exhibiting light and heavy electronic character at different parts of momentum space. Upon doping, the interplay between these light and heavy components gives rise to a variety of striking phenomena, including interaction-induced bandwidth renormalization, Mott-like cascades of the heavy particles, and Dirac revivals of the light particles. We also uncover a persistent low-energy excitation tied to the heavy sector, suggesting a new unaccounted degree of freedom. These results resolve the long-standing puzzle in MATBG - the dual nature of its electrons - by showing that it originates from electrons at different momenta within the same topological heavy fermion-like flat bands. More broadly, our results establish the QTM as a powerful tool for high-resolution spectroscopic studies of quantum materials previously inaccessible to conventional techniques.

A Perspective on Ferrons

The duality between electric and magnetic dipoles in electromagnetism only partly applies to condensed matter. In particular, the elementary excitations of the magnetic and ferroelectric orders, namely magnons and ferrons, respectively, have received asymmetric attention from the condensed matter community in the past. In this perspective, we introduce and summarize the current state of the budding field of "ferronics" and speculate about its potential applications in thermal, information, and communication technology.

Visible spectra of W8+ in an electron-beam ion trap

To provide spectroscopic data for lowly charged tungsten ions relevant to fusion research, this work focuses on the W8+ ion. Six visible spectra lines in the range of 420-660 nm are observed with a compact electron-beam ion trap in Shanghai. These lines are assigned to W8+ based on their intensity variations as increasing electron-beam energy and the M1 line from the ground configuration in W7+. Furthermore, transition energies are calculated for the 30 lowest levels of the 4f14 5s2 5p4, 4f13 5s2 5p5 and 4f12 5s2 5p6 configurations of W8+ by using the flexible atomic code (FAC) and GRASP package, respectively. Reasonably good agreement is found between our two independent atomic-structure calculations. The resulting atomic parameters are adopted to simulate the spectra based on the collisional-radiative model implemented in the FAC code. This assists us with identification of six strong M1 transitions in 4f13 5s2 5p5 and 4f12 5s2 5p6 configurations from our experiments

Measurement of Absolute Single and Double Electron Capture Cross Sections for O6+ Ions Collision with CO2, CH4, H2 and N2

The absolute electron capture cross sections for single and double charge exchanges between the highly charged ions O6+ and CO2, CH4, H2, N2, the dominant collision processes in the solar wind, have been measured in the energy from 7 keV*q (2.63 keV/u) to 52 keV*q (19.5 keV/u). These measurements were carried out in the new experimental instrument set up at Fudan University, and the error of cross sections for single and double charge exchanges at the 1σ confidence level are about 11% and 16%, respectively. Limited agreement is achieved with single electron capture results calculated by the classical over-barrier model. These cross sections data are useful for simulation ion-neutral processes in astrophysical environments and to improve the present theoretical model of fundamental atomic processes.

Observation of indirect ionization of W7+ in an electron-beam ion-trap plasma

In this work, visible and extreme ultraviolet spectra of W7+ are measured using the high-temperature superconducting electron-beam ion trap (EBIT) at the Shanghai EBIT Laboratory under extremely low-energy conditions (lower than the nominal electron-beam energy of 130 eV). The relevant atomic structure is calculated using the flexible atomic code package based on the relativistic configuration interaction method. The GRASP2K code, in the framework of the multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock method, is employed as well for calculating the wavelength of the M1 transition in the ground configuration of W7+. A line from the W7+ ions is observed at a little higher electron-beam energy than the ionization potential for W4+, making this line appear to be from W5+. A hypothesis for the charge-state evolution of W7+ is proposed based on our experimental and theoretical results; that is, the occurrence of W7+ ions results from indirect ionization caused by stepwise excitation between some metastable states of lower-charge-state W ions, at the nominal electron-beam energy of 59 eV.

Prescribing capacitary curvature measures on planar convex domains

For $p\in (1,2]$ and a bounded, convex, nonempty, open set $Ω\subset\mathbb R^2$ let $μ_p(\barΩ,\cdot)$ be the $p$-capacitary curvature measure (generated by the closure $\barΩ$ of $Ω$) on the unit circle $\mathbb S^1$. This paper shows that such a problem of prescribing $μ_p$ on a planar convex domain: "Given a finite, nonnegative, Borel measure $μ$ on $\mathbb S^1$, find a bounded, convex, nonempty, open set $Ω\subset\mathbb R^2$ such that $dμ_p(\barΩ,\cdot)=dμ(\cdot)$" is solvable if and only if $μ$ has centroid at the origin and its support $\mathrm{supp}(μ)$ does not comprise any pair of antipodal points. And, the solution is unique up to translation. Moreover, if $dμ_p(\barΩ,\cdot)=ψ(\cdot)\,d\ell(\cdot)$ with $ψ\in C^{k,α}$ and $d\ell$ being the standard arc-length element on $\mathbb S^1$, then $\partialΩ$ is of $C^{k+2,α}$.

Investigation of M1 transitions of the ground-state configuration of In-like Tungsten

Three visible lines of M1 transitions from In-like W were recorded using the Shanghai permanent magnet electron beam ion trap. The experimental wavelengths were measured as 493.84 $\pm$ 0.15, 226.97 $\pm$ 0.13 and 587.63 $\pm$ 0.23 nm (vacuum wavelengths). These results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions obtained using large-scale Relativistic Many-Body Perturbation Theory, in the form of the Flexible Atomic Code.

A Tracing of the Fractional Temperature Field

This note is devoted to a study of $L^q$-tracing of the fractional temperature field $u(t,x)$ -- the weak solution of the fractional heat equation $(\partial_t+(-Δ_x)^α)u(t,x)=g(t,x)$ in $L^p(\mathbb R^{1+n}_+)$ subject to the initial temperature $u(0,x)=f(x)$ in $L^p(\mathbb R^n)$.

Dual Fano and Lorentzian line profile poperties of autoionizing states

Ott et al. (Science (340, 716 (2013)) successfully transferred Fano profile into Lorentzian lineshape using an intense infrared laser, after excitation of autoionizing states in helium by attosecond XUV pulse. This is a very important step forward of quantum phase control. However, here we show experimentally that an autoionizing state can have both Fano and Lorentzian behavior naturally, depending on the process involved. This study utilized the inverse process of photon absorption ionization, i.e. electron ion recombination with photon emission, making sure the resonant autoionizing state is not perturbed by the laser fields. Our result implies that excitation of the state through different paths can lead to different Fano profiles for the same resonant state. This allows more options for the combination of laser fields and lead to more opportunities for quantum phase control. Our result also indicates the breakdown of the classical two step picture for dielectronic recombination.

Thermal spin pumping and magnon-phonon-mediated spin-Seebeck effect

The spin-Seebeck effect (SSE) in ferromagnetic metals and insulators has been investigated systematically by means of the inverse spin-Hall effect (ISHE) in paramagnetic metals. The SSE generates a spin voltage as a result of a temperature gradient in a ferromagnet, which injects a spin current into an attached paramagnetic metal. In the paramagnet, this spin current is converted into an electric field due to the ISHE, enabling the electric detection of the SSE. The observation of the SSE is performed in longitudinal and transverse configurations consisting of a ferromagnet/paramagnet hybrid structure, where thermally generated spin currents flowing parallel and perpendicular to the temperature gradient are detected, respectively. Our results explain the SSE in terms of a two-step process: (1) the temperature gradient creates a non-equilibrium state in the ferromagnet governed by both magnon and phonon propagations and (2) the non-equilibrium between magnons in the ferromagnet and electrons in the paramagnet at the contact interface leads to "thermal spin pumping" and the ISHE signal. The non-equilibrium state of metallic magnets (e.g. Ni81Fe19) under a temperature gradient is governed mainly by the phonons in the sample and the substrate, while in insulating magnets (e.g. Y3Fe5O12) both magnon and phonon propagations appear to be important. The phonon-mediated non-equilibrium that drives the thermal spin pumping is confirmed also by temperature-dependent measurements, giving rise to a giant enhancement of the SSE signals at low temperatures.

Spin Seebeck insulator

Thermoelectric generation is an essential function of future energy-saving technologies. However, this generation has been an exclusive feature of electric conductors, a situation which inflicts a heavy toll on its application; a conduction electron often becomes a nuisance in thermal design of devices. Here we report electric-voltage generation from heat flowing in an insulator. We reveal that, despite the absence of conduction electrons, a magnetic insulator LaY2Fe5O12 converts a heat flow into spin voltage. Attached Pt films transform this spin voltage into electric voltage by the inverse spin Hall effect. The experimental results require us to introduce thermally activated interface spin exchange between LaY2Fe5O12 and Pt. Our findings extend the range of potential materials for thermoelectric applications and provide a crucial piece of information for understanding the physics of the spin Seebeck effect.

Ballistic vs Diffusive Transport in Current-Induced Magnetization Switching

We test whether current-induced magnetization switching due to spin-transfer-torque in ferromagnetic/non-magnetic/ferromagnetic (F/N/F) trilayers changes significantly when scattering within the N-metal layers is changed from ballistic to diffusive. Here ballistic corresponds to a ratio r = lambda/t greater than or equal to 3 for a Cu spacer layer, and diffusive to r = lambda/t less than or equal to 0.4 for a CuGe alloy spacer layer, where lambda is the mean-free-path in the N-layer of fixed thickness t = 10 nm. The average switching currents for the alloy spacer layer are only modestly larger than those for Cu. The best available model predicts a much greater sensitivity of the switching currents to diffuse scattering in the spacer layer than we see.

Old and New Morry Spaces via Heat Kernel Bounds

Given $p\in [1,\infty)$ and $λ\in (0,n)$, we study Morrey space ${\rm L}^{p,λ}({\mathbb R}^n)$ of all locally integrable complex-valued functions $f$ on ${\mathbb R}^n$ such that for every open Euclidean ball $B\subset{\mathbb R}^n$ with radius $r_B$ there are numbers $C=C(f)$ (depending on $f$) and $c=c(f,B)$ (relying upon $f$ and $B$) satisfying $$ r_B^{-λ}\int_{B}|f(x)-c|^pdx\le C $$ and derive old and new, two essentially different cases arising from either choosing $c=f_B=|B|^{-1}\int_{B}f(y)dy$ or replacing $c$ by $P_{t_B}(x)=\int_{t_B}p_{t_B}(x,y)f(y)dy$ -- where $t_B$ is scaled to $r_B$ and $p_t(\cdot,\cdot)$ is the kernel of the infinitesimal generator $L$ of an analytic semigroup $\{e^{-tL}\}_{t\ge0}$ on ${\rm L}^2({\mathbb R}^n)$. Consequently, we are led to simultaneously characterize the old and new Morrey spaces, but also to show that for a suitable operator $L$, the new Morrey space is equivalent to the old one.
