Dual Character of Magnetism in Ferropnictides: Insights from Optical Measurements

We investigate the electronic structure of EuFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ using optical spectroscopy and first-principles calculations. At low temperature we observe the evolution of \textit{two} gap-like features, one having a BCS mean-field behavior and another with strongly non-BCS behavior. Using band structure calculations, we identify the former with a spin-Peierls-like partial gap in $d_{yz}$ bands, and the latter with the transition across the large exchange gap in $d_{xz}/d_{xy}$ bands. Our results demonstrate that the antiferromagnetism in the ferropnictides is neither fully local nor fully itinerant, but contains elements of both.

Anisotropy and Penetration Depth of MgB$_{2}$ from ${}^{11}$B NMR

The ${}^{11}$B NMR spectra in polycrystalline MgB$_2$ were measured for several magnetic fields (1.97 T and 3.15 T) as a function of temperature from 5 K to 40 K. The composite spectra in the superconducting state can be understood in terms of anisotropy of the upper critical field, $γ_{H}$, which is determined to be 5.4 at low temperature. Using Brandt's algorithm\cite{Brandt} the full spectrum, including satellites, was simulated for the temperature 8 K and a magnetic field of 1.97 T. The penetration depth $λ$ was determined to be $1,152\pm50$ Å, and the anisotropy of the penetration depth, $γ_λ$, was estimated to be close to one at low temperature. Therefore, our findings establish that there are two different anisotropies for upper critical field and penetration depth at low temperatures.

Search for Dark Matter WIMPs using Upward Through-going Muons in Super-Kamiokande

We present the results of indirect searches for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) with 1679.6 live days of data from the Super-Kamiokande detector using neutrino-induced upward through-going muons. The search is performed by looking for an excess of high energy muon neutrinos from WIMP annihilations in the Sun, the core of the Earth, and the Galactic Center, as compared to the number expected from the atmospheric neutrino background. No statistically significant excess was seen. We calculate flux limits in various angular cones around each of the above celestial objects. We obtain conservative model-independent upper limits on WIMP-nucleon cross-section as a function of WIMP mass and compare these results with the corresponding results from direct dark matter detection experiments.

Effects of unreacted Mg impurities on the transport properties of MgB2

We synthesized polycrystalline MgB2 from a stoichiometric mixture of Mg and the 11 B isotope under different conditions. All the samples showed bulk superconductivity with Tc = 38~39 K. The samples containing the least amount of unreacted Mg showed the highest Tc and the sharpest transition width (Delta_Tc). A residual resistivity ratio (RRR) of ~ 5.8, and a magnetoresistance (MR), at 40 K, of 12% were obtained for these samples. Moreover, there was no upturn of resistivity in a low temperature region at 10 Tesla. The samples containing appreciable amounts of unreacted Mg showed quite different behaviors; the values of Delta_Tc, RRR, and MR were much larger. An upturn appeared in resistivity of the samples below about 50 K at 10 T and is thought to be due to the unreacted Mg.

Strongly correlated s-wave pairing in the n-type infinite-layer cuprate

Quasiparticle tunneling spectra of the electron-doped (n-type) infinite-layer cuprate Sr_{0.9}La_{0.1}CuO_2 reveal characteristics that counter a number of common phenomena in the hole-doped (p-type) cuprates. The optimally doped Sr_{0.9}La_{0.1}CuO_2 with T_c = 43 K exhibits a momentum-independent superconducting gap Δ= 13.0 +- 1.0 meV that substantially exceeds the BCS value, and the spectral characteristics indicate insignificant quasiparticle damping by spin fluctuations and the absence of pseudogap. The response to quantum impurities in the Cu-sites also differs fundamentally from that of the p-type cuprates with d_{x^2-y^2}-wave pairing symmetry.

Photonic quantum-corral ring laser: A fermionic phase transition

Extensive Bose-Einstein condensation research activities have recently led to studies of fermionic atoms and optical confinements. Here we present a case of micro-optical fermionic electron phase transition. Optically confined ordering and phase transitions of a fermionic cloud in dynamic steady state are associated with Rayleigh emissions from photonic quantum ring manifold which are generated by nature without any ring lithography. The whispering gallery modes, produced in a semiconductor Rayleigh-Fabry-Perot toroidal cavity at room temperature, exhibit novel properties of ultralow thresholds open to nano-ampere regime, thermal stabilities from square-root-T-dependent spectral shift, and angularly varying intermode spacings. The photonic quantum ring phenomena are associated with a photonic field-driven phase transition of quantum-well-to-quantum-wire and hence the photonic (non-de Broglie) quantum corral effect on the Rayleigh cavity-confined carriers in dynamic steady state. Based upon the intra-cavity fermionic condensation we also offer a prospect for an electrically driven few-quantum dot single photon source from the photonic quantum ring laser for quantum information processors.

Microstructure and pinning properties of hexagonal-disc shaped single crystalline MgB2

We synthesized hexagonal-disc-shaped MgB2 single crystals under high-pressure conditions and analyzed the microstructure and pinning properties. The lattice constants and the Laue pattern of the crystals from X-ray micro-diffraction showed the crystal symmetry of MgB2. A thorough crystallographic mapping within a single crystal showed that the edge and c-axis of hexagonal-disc shape exactly matched the (10-10) and the (0001) directions of the MgB2 phase. Thus, these well-shaped single crystals may be the best candidates for studying the direction dependences of the physical properties. The magnetization curve and the magnetic hysteresis for these single crystals showed the existence of a wide reversible region and weak pinning properties, which supported our single crystals being very clean.

Near Muon Range Detector for the K2K Experiment -Construction and Performance-

A muon range detector (MRD) has been constructed as a near detector for the KEK-to-Kamioka long-baseline neutrino experiment (K2K). It monitors the neutrino beam properties at the near site by measuring the energy, angle and production point of muons produced by charged-current neutrino interaction. The detector has been working stably since the start of the K2K experiment.

X-ray Photoemission Study of the Infinite-Layer Cuprate Superconductor Sr0.9La0.1CuO2

The electron-doped infinite-layer superconductor Sr0.9La0.1CuO2 is studied with x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS). A nonaqueous chemical etchant is shown to effectively remove contaminants and to yield surfaces from which signals intrinsic to the superconductor dominate. These data are compared to measurements from hole-doped La1.85Sr0.15CuO4, from undoped La2CuO4, and from electron-doped Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4-d. The Cu 2p core level is consistent with a lower value of the O 2p to Cu 3d charge transfer energy D than in hole-doped cuprates. A clear Fermi edge is observed in the valence band region.

Synthesis and pinning properties of the infinite-layer superconductor Sr0.9La0.1CuO

We report the high-pressure synthesis of the electron-doped infinite-layer superconductor Sr0.9La0.1CuO2 and its superconducting properties. A Rietveld analysis of X-ray powder diffraction data showed that, within the resolution of the measurement, the sample had purely an infinite-layer structure without any discernible impurities. The superconducting volume fraction and the transition width were greatly improved compared to those in previous reports. The irreversibility field line and the intragranular critical current density were much higher than those of La1.85Sr0.15CuO4 and Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4. The stronger pinning behaviors are consistent with the strong interlayer coupling due to the short distance between CuO2 planes.

Substitution for Cu in the electron-doped infinite-layer superconductor Sr0.9La0.1CuO2, Ni reduces Tc much faster than Zn

We report on the effect of substitution for Cu on Tc of electron-doped infinite-layer superconductors Sr0.9La0.1Cu1-xRxO2, R = Zn and Ni. We found that Tc was nearly constant until x = 0.03 for R = Zn, while superconductivity was nearly suppressed for x = 0.02 with dTc/dx = 20 K/% for R = Ni. This behavior is very similar to that of conventional superconductors. These findings are discussed in terms of the superconducting gap symmetry in the cuprate superconductors including another electron-doped superconductor, (Nd,Ce)2CuO4-y.

Superconducting properties of well-shaped MgB2 single crystal

We report measurements of the transport and the magnetic properties of high-quality, sub-millimeter-sized MgB2 single crystals with clear hexagonal-plate shapes. The low-field magnetization and the magnetic hysteresis curves show the vortex pinning of these crystals to be very weak. The Debye temperature of $Θ_{D}\sim 1100$ K, obtained from the zero-field resistance curve, suggests that the normal-state transport properties are dominated by electron-phonon interactions. The resistivity ratio between 40 K and 300 K was about 5, and the upper critical field anisotropy ratio was 3 $\pm$ 0.2 at temperatures around 32 K.

Three-Dimensional Superconductivity in the Infinite-Layer Compound Sr_{0.9}La_{0.1}CuO_2 in Entire Region below $T_c$

The infinite-layer compound ACuO$_{2}$ (A $=$ alkaline-earth ions) is regarded as the most suitable material for exploring the fundamental nature of the CuO$_2$ plane because it does not contain a charge-reservoir block, such as a rock-salt or a fluorite like block. We report that superconductivity in the infinite-layer compound Sr$_{0.9}$La$_{0.1}$CuO$_2$ is of a three-dimensional nature, in contrast to the quasi two-dimensional superconducting behavior of all other cuprates. The key observation is that the $c$-axis coherence length is longer than the $c$-axis lattice constant even at zero temperature. This means that the superconducting order parameter of one CuO$_{2}$ plane overlaps with those of neighboring CuO$_{2}$ planes all the temperatures below the $T_c$. Among all cuprates, only the infinite-layer superconductor shows such a feature.

Pressure dependent thermoelectric power of MgB$_2$ superconductor

We have measured temperature dependence of thermoelectric power (TEP) on MgB$_2$ superconductor under hydrostatic pressure. The sign and temperature dependence of TEP shows metallic hole carriers are dominant with activation type contribution at higher temperature. TEP increases with pressure while $T_c$ decrease with ratio -0.136 K/kbar. The data are discussed in consideration of carriers from different bands and anisotropy of compressibility.

X-ray Photoemission Study of MgB2

A c-axis oriented thin film and a high density sintered pellet of MgB2 have been studied by x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, and compared to measurements from MgO and MgF2 single crystals. The as-grown surface has a layer which is Mg-rich and oxidized, which is effectively removed by a nonaqueous etchant. The subsurface region of the pellet is Mg-deficient. This nonideal near-surface region may explain varied scanning tunneling spectroscopy results. The MgB2 core level and Auger signals are similar to measurements from metallic Mg and transition metal diborides, and the measured valence band is consistent with the calculated density of states.

Optical phonons of superconducting infinite-layer compounds Sr_{0.9}Ln_{0.1}CuO_2 (Ln = La, Gd, Sm)

We have identifies the otical phonon modes of the superconducting infinite-layer compounds Sr$_{0.9}Ln_{0.1}$CuO$_2$ ($Ln$ = La, Gd, Sm; $T_c$ = 43 K for all) from their infrared reflectivity spectra obtained with a Fourier-transform infrared spectrometer on high-quality high-purity samples synthesized under high pressure. The La- and the Gd-doped compounds exhibited only four (2$A_{\rm 2u}$+2$E_{\rm u}$) out of the five (2$A_{\rm 2u}$+3$E_{\rm u}$) infrared-active phonon modes predicted by a group theoretical analysis whereas the Sm-doped compound exhibited all five modes. We propose the atomic displacement pattern for each phonon mode based on reported lattice dynamics calculations and through comparison with the phonon modes of other single-layer high-$T_{\rm c}$ cuprate superconductors.

Synthesis and characterization of the infinite-layer superconductor Sr_{0.9}La_{0.1}CuO_{2}

We report the high-pressure synthesis of the electron-doped infinite-layer superconductor Sr_{0.9}La_{0.1}CuO_{2}. A Rietveld analysis using X-ray powder diffraction data showed that, within the resolution of the measurement, the sample was purely an infinite-layer structure without any discernible impurities. The superconducting volume fraction and the transition width were greatly improved compared to those in the previous reports. Also the irreversibility field line was much higher than that of (La,Sr)_{2}CuO_{4}. The higher value seems to originate from the strong interlayer coupling due to the reduced average distance between the CuO_{2} planes.
