Linear dichroism infrared resonance in over-, under-, and optimally-doped cuprate superconductors

By measuring the polarization changes in THz, infrared, and visible radiation over an extended energy range (3-2330 meV), we observe symmetry-breaking in cuprate high temperature superconductors over wide energy, doping, and temperature ranges. We measure the polarization rotation and ellipticity of transmitted radiation though thin films as the sample is rotated. We observe a two-fold rotational symmetry in the Faraday angle, which is associated with linear dichroism (LD) and occurs when electromagnetic radiation polarized along one direction is absorbed more strongly than radiation polarized in the perpendicular direction. Such polarization anisotropies can be generally associated with symmetry breakings. We measure the amplitude of the LD signal and study its temperature, energy, and doping dependence. The LD signal shows a resonant behavior with a peak in the few hundred meV range, which is coincident with the mid-infrared optical feature that has been associated with the formation of the pseudogap state. The strongest LD signal is found in under-doped films, although it is also observed in optimally- and over-doped samples. The LD signal is consistent with nematic charge ordering as well as novel magnetoelectric effects.

Andreev reflection spectroscopy on Bi$_{2}$X$_{3}$ (X = Se, Te) topological insulators: Implications for the c-axis superconducting proximity effect

Using Andreev reflection (AR) as an experimental gauge of the superconducting proximity effect (PE), we assess the topological purity of the superconductivity that is induced by the c-axis PE between an s-wave superconductor and the topological insulators Bi$_{2}$X$_{3}$ (X=Se,Te). Point-contact AR spectroscopy is performed with Nb tips on Bi$_{2}$X$_{3}$ single crystals at 4.2 K. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy is also used, to locate the Fermi level $E_F$ relative to the Dirac point in the crystals. The AR data is analyzed with Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk theory, taking into account tip-induced spin-orbit coupling, Fermi-surface mismatch, and the co-presence of bulk band and topological surface states at $E_F$. Our results indicate that the superconductivity that can be proximity-induced into Bi$_{2}$X$_{3}$ is predominantly non-topological.

Probing itinerant antiferromagnetism with $d$-wave Andreev reflection spectroscopy

To study how Andreev reflection (AR) is affected by itinerant antiferromagnetism, we perform $d$-wave AR spectroscopy with superconducting YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ on TiAu and on variously-oxidized Nb (NbO$_x$) samples. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is also used on the latter to measure their surface oxide composition. Below the Néel temperatures ($T_N$) of both TiAu and NbO$_x$, the conductance spectra show a dip-like structure instead of a zero-bias peak within the superconducting energy gap; for NbO$_x$, higher-oxidized samples show a stronger spectral dip at zero bias. These observations indicate that itinerant antiferromagnetic order suppresses the AR process. Interestingly, the spectral dip persists above $T_N$ for both TiAu and NbO$_x$, implying that spin fluctuations can also suppress AR. Our results suggest that $d$-wave AR spectroscopy may be used to probe the degree of spin ordering in itinerant antiferromagnets.

Synthesis of high-oxidation Y-Ba-Cu-O phases in superoxygenated thin films

It is known that solid-state reaction in high-pressure oxygen can stabilize high-oxidation phases of Y-Ba-Cu-O superconductors in powder form. We extend this superoxygenation concept of synthesis to thin films which, due to their large surface-to-volume ratio, are more reactive thermodynamically. Epitaxial thin films of $\rm{YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ}}$ grown by pulsed laser deposition are annealed at up to 700 atm O$_2$ and 900$^\circ$C, in conjunction with Cu enrichment by solid-state diffusion. The films show clear formation of $\rm{Y_2Ba_4Cu_7O_{15-δ}}$ and $\rm{Y_2Ba_4Cu_8O_{16}}$ as well as regions of $\rm{YBa_2Cu_5O_{9-δ}}$ and YBa$_2$Cu$_6$O$_{10-δ}$ phases, according to scanning transmission electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction and x-ray absorption spectroscopy. Similarly annealed $\rm{YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ}}$ powders show no phase conversion. Our results demonstrate a novel route of synthesis towards discovering more complex phases of cuprates and other superconducting oxides.

Strain-driven attenuation of superconductivity in heteroepitaxial perovskite/YBCO/perovskite thin films

To distinguish between the effects of strain and magnetism on the superconductivity in $c$-axis La$_{2/3}$Ca$_{1/3}$MnO$_3$/YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ (LCMO/YBCO) heterostructures, we study perovskite/YBCO/perovskite thin films using either ferromagnetic LCMO or paramagnetic LaNiO$_3$ (LNO) as perovskite. For a lattice-symmetry matched comparison, we also use orthorhombic PrBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ (PBCO) in place of the pseudocubic perovskites. Unlike PBCO/YBCO/PBCO, both LCMO/YBCO/LCMO and LNO/YBCO/LNO trilayers show strong attenuation of the superconducting $T_c$ as YBCO layer thickness is reduced from 21.4 to 5.4 nm. Our results indicate that heteroepitaxial strain, rather than long-range proximity effect, is responsible for the long length scales of $T_c$ attenuation observed in $c$-axis LCMO/YBCO heterostructures.

Superconducting epitaxial YBa2Cu3O7-δ on SrTiO3 buffered Si (001)

Thin films of optimally-doped (001)-oriented YBa2Cu3O7-δ are epitaxially integrated on silicon (001) through growth on a single crystalline SrTiO3 buffer. The former is grown using pulsed-laser deposition and the latter is grown on Si using oxide molecular beam epitaxy. The single crystal nature of the SrTiO3 buffer enables high quality YBa2Cu3O7-δ films exhibiting high transition temperatures to be integrated on Si. For a 30 nm thick SrTiO3 buffer, 50 nm thick YBa2Cu3O7-δ films that exhibit a transition temperature of ~ 93 K, and a narrow transition width (< 5 K) are achieved. The integration of single crystalline YBa2Cu3O7-δ on Si (001) paves the way for the potential exploration of cuprate materials in a variety of applications.

Attenuation of superconductivity in manganite/cuprate heterostructures by epitaxially-induced CuO intergrowths

We examine the effect of CuO intergrowths on the superconductivity in epitaxial La_{2/3}Ca_{1/3}MnO_3/YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ} (LCMO/YBCO) thin-film heterostructures. Scanning transmission electron microscopy on bilayer LCMO/YBCO thin films revealed double CuO-chain intergrowths which form regions with the 247 lattice structure in the YBCO layer. These nanoscale 247 regions do not appear in x-ray diffraction, but can physically account for the reduced critical temperature Tc of bilayer thin films relative to unilayer films with the same YBCO thickness, at least down to ~25 nm. We attribute the CuO intergrowths to the bilayer heteroepitaxial mismatch and the Tc reduction to the generally lower Tc seen in bulk 247 samples. These epitaxially-induced CuO intergrowths provide a microstructural mechanism for the attenuation of superconductivity in LCMO/YBCO heterostructures.

Observation of an in-plane vortex lattice transition in the multiband superconductor 2H-NbSe2 using scanning tunneling spectroscopy

We report real-space evidence for an in-plane vortex lattice (VL) transition in the multiband superconductor 2H-NbSe2, observed by laterally imaging subsurface vortices with scanning tunneling spectroscopy. With magnetic field applied || ab-surface up to 6.5 T at 300 mK, spatial maps of the zero-bias conductance revealed a stripe pattern whose dominant periodicity showed a discrete shift near 0.7 T. The stripes can be interpreted as the surface projection of a distorted hexagonal VL that undergoes a first-order reorientation transition. This transition occurs for field || [100] but not [110], and is correlated with the multigap characteristics seen in the heat capacity and thermal transport data. These results implicate the multiband pairing of 2H-NbSe2 in the VL transition we observed.

Spectroscopic signatures of the Larkin-Ovchinnikov state in the conductance characteristics of a normal-metal/superconductor junction

Using a discrete-lattice approach, we calculate the conductance spectra between a normal metal and an s-wave Larkin-Ovchinnikov (LO) superconductor, with the junction interface oriented {\em along} the direction of the order-parameter (OP) modulation. The OP sign reversal across one single nodal line can induce a sizable number of zero-energy Andreev bound states around the nodal line, and a hybridized midgap-states band is formed amid a momentum-dependent gap as a result of the periodic array of nodal lines in the LO state. This band-in-gap structure and its anisotropic properties give rise to distinctive features in both the point-contact and tunneling spectra as compared with the BCS and Fulde-Ferrell cases. These spectroscopic features can serve as distinguishing signatures of the LO state.

Cryomagnetic scanning tunneling spectroscopy study of multi-gap spectra in superconducting 2H-NbSe2

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy was performed on single crystals of superconducting 2H-NbSe2, at 300 mK and in a magnetic field, up to 5 T, applied parallel to the ab-plane. This novel field geometry allows the quasiparticle density-of-states spectrum to be measured under finite superfluid momentum, while avoiding contributions from the vortex-core bound states. At zero field, we observed a fully-gapped conductance spectrum with both gap-edge peaks and sub-gap kinks. These spectral features show a systematic evolution with the applied field: the kinks close in while the peaks move apart in low fields, and the zero-bias conductance has a two-sloped behavior over the entire field range, though dipping anomalously at 0.7 T. Our data was analyzed with recent theoretical models for quasiparticle tunneling into a current-carrying superconductor, and yielded distinct evidence for multiple superconducting gaps coming from various Fermi-surface sheets of different topologies, as well as possible implications on the origin of the coexisting charge-density-wave order.

Andreev reflection spectroscopy on the heavy-fermion superconductor PrOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$: Microscopic evidence for multiple superconducting order parameters

Point-contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy was performed on single crystals of the heavy-fermion superconductor PrOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$, down to 90mK and up to 3Tesla. The conductance spectra showed multiple structures, including zero-bias peaks and spectral dips, which are interpreted as signatures of multiple pairing gaps, one clearly having nodes. Samples with 2% Ru replacing Os were also measured, showing pronounced spectral humps consistent with the emergence of a non-nodal gap. Detailed analysis of the spectral evolution revealed a magnetic field-\emph{vs.}-temperature phase diagram for PrOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ characterized by two distinct superconducting order parameters.

Andreev nanoprobe of half-metallic CrO$_{2}$ films using superconducting cuprate tips

Superconducting tips of YBa$_{2} $Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-x}$ were used to perform point-contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy on half-metallic CrO$_{2}$ thin films. At 4.2K, strong suppression of the d-wave Andreev reflection characteristics was observed, consistent with the high spin polarization of CrO$_{2}$. Our technique was validated by comparison with data taken on non-magnetic Au films, and with data taken by superconducting Pb tips. The point contacts were estimated to be $\lesssim$ 10nm in size, attesting to their ballistic and microscopic nature. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of using superconducting cuprate tips as spin-sensitive nanoprobes of ferromagnets.

Lateral imaging of the superconducting vortex lattice using Doppler-modulated scanning tunneling microscopy

By spatially mapping the Doppler effect of an in-plane magnetic field on the quasiparticle tunneling spectrum, we have laterally imaged the vortex lattice in superconducting 2H-NbSe2. Cryomagnetic scanning tunneling spectroscopy was performed at 300 mK on the ab-surface oriented parallel to the field H. Conductance images at zero bias show stripe patterns running along H, with the stripe separation varying as H^-0.5. Regions of higher zero-bias conductance show lower gap-edge conductance, consistent with spectral redistribution by spatially-modulated superfluid momentum. Our results are interpreted in terms of the interaction between vortical and screening currents, and demonstrate a general method for probing subsurface vortices.

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy study of c-axis proximity effect in epitaxial bilayer manganite/cuprate thin films

Recent experimental studies have indicated novel superconducting proximity effects in thin-film heterostructures comprising ferromagnetic manganites and superconducting cuprates. To look for such effects microscopically, we performed scanning tunneling spectroscopy on La$_{2/3}$Ca$_{1/3}$MnO$_3$/YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ (LCMO/YBCO) bilayer thin films. $\emph{c}$-axis oriented films of varying thickness were grown on SrTiO$_{3}$ substrates using pulsed laser-ablated deposition. Heteroepitaxiality of the films was confirmed by cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy. Tunneling spectra were measured at 4.2 K, and analyzed for signatures of a pairing gap on the LCMO layer. For bilayer samples with LCMO thickness down to 5nm, asymmetric conductance spectra characteristic of single-layer LCMO films were observed, showing no clear gap structures. These observations are consistent with a very short-range proximity effect involving spin-singlet pairs, and difficult to reconcile with longer-range proximity scenarios involving spin-triplet pairs.

Local tunneling probe of (110) Y_0.95Ca_0.05Ba_2Cu_3O_7-delta thin films in a magnetic field

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy was performed on (110)-oriented thin films of Ca-overdoped Y$_{0.95}$Ca$_{0.05}$Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ at 4.2K, to probe the local evolution of Andreev$-$Saint-James surface states in a c-axis magnetic field. In zero field, we observed conductance spectra with spontaneously-split peaks and spectra with unsplit zero-bias peaks. The former showed enhanced splitting with field, and the latter showed threshold splitting above finite fields. Although both field evolutions can be described in terms of screening and orbital supercurrents, within the framework of $d\pm iα$ pairing ($d$=$d_{x^2-y^2}$; $α$=$d_{xy}$,$s$), the enhanced splitting is consistent with only the $d$ + $iα$ state. Our results have direct implications on the stability of broken time-reversal symmetry in cuprate superconductors.

Tunneling Spectroscopy on c-axis Y{1-x}Ca{x}Ba2Cu3O{7-delta} Thin Films

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy was performed on c-axis Y{1-x}Ca{x}Ba2Cu3O{7-delta} thin films for x= 0, 0.05, 0.15 and 0.20 at 4.2K. The measured spectra show main-gap, sub-gap and satellite features which scale similarly in energy versus Ca-doping, suggesting that they are associated with a single pairing energy. The data is analyzed with a multiband tunneling model which attributes the sub-gap features to the chain band and the satellite and main-gap features to the plane band for d+s pairing symmetry. These results suggest that the superconductivity in Y{1-x}Ca{x}Ba2Cu3O{7-delta} involves multiple bands.

Conductance characteristics between a normal metal and a two-dimensional Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov superconductor: the Fulde-Ferrell state

The Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state has received renewed interest recently due to the experimental indication of its presence in CeCoIn$_5$, a quasi 2-dimensional (2D) d-wave superconductor. However direct evidence of the spatial variation of the superconducting order parameter, which is the hallmark of the FFLO state, does not yet exist. In this work we explore the possibility of detecting the phase structure of the order parameter directly using conductance spectroscopy through micro-constrictions, which probes the phase sensitive surface Andreev bound states of d-wave superconductors. We employ the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk formalism to calculate the conductance characteristics between a normal metal (N) and a 2D $s$- or $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconductor in the Fulde-Ferrell state, for all barrier parameter $z$ from the point contact limit ($z=0$) to the tunneling limit ($z \gg 1$). We find that the zero-bias conductance peak due to these surface Andreev bound states observed in the uniform d-wave superconductor is split and shifted in the Fulde-Ferrell state. We also clarify what weighted bulk density of states is measured by the conductance in the limit of large $z$.

Selective epitaxial growth of sub-micron complex oxide structures by amorphous SrTiO3

A chemical-free technique for fabricating submicron complex oxide structures has been developed based on selective epitaxial growth. The crystallinity and hence the conductivity of the complex oxide is inhibited by amorphous SrTiO3 (STO). Using a combination of pulsed laser deposition and electron-beam lithography, amorphous STO barriers are first deposited on a single crystal substrate. A thin film is then deposited on the patterned substrate with the amorphous STO barriers acting to electrically and physically isolate different regions of the film. Since no chemical or physical etchants come in contact with the deposited film, its integrity and stability are preserved. This technique has successfully produced sub-micron YBCO and LCMO structures.
