Coexistence of Superconductor and Spin-Density Wave in (TMTSF)2ClO4: Spatial Structure of the Two-phase State

We report comprehensive (magneto)transport studies of the two-phase state in (TMTSF)2ClO4, where superconducting (SC) phase coexists with spin-density wave insulator (SDW). By tuning the degree of ClO4 anion ordering in controlled manner we drive SDW state and study the evolution of the SC spatial texture. We find that as SDW is suppressed, SC regions initially appear inside the SDW insulator in a form of filaments extended in the interlayer direction and further merge into the two-dimensional sheets across the most conducting axis of the crystal. We demonstrate that almost all our results can be explained within the soliton phase model, though with several assumptions they can also be interpreted by the creation of non-uniform deformations. We believe that the anisotropy is intrinsic to SC/SDW coexistence in quasi one-dimensional superconductors.

Formation of Cosmic Crystals in Highly-Supersaturated Silicate Vapor Produced by Planetesimal Bow Shocks

Several lines of evidence suggest that fine silicate crystals observed in primitive meteorite and interplanetary dust particles (IDPs) nucleated in a supersaturated silicate vapor followed by crystalline growth. We investigated evaporation of $μ$m-sized silicate particles heated by a bow shock produced by a planetesimal orbiting in the gas in the early solar nebula and condensation of crystalline silicate from the vapor thus produced. Our numerical simulation of shock-wave heating showed that these μm-sized particles evaporated almost completely when the bow shock is strong enough to cause melting of chondrule precursor dust particles. We found that the silicate vapor cools very rapidly with expansion into the ambient unshocked nebular region; the cooling rate is estimated, for instance, to be as high as 2000 K s$^{-1}$ for a vapor heated by a bow shock associated with a planetesimal of radius 1 km. The rapid cooling of the vapor leads to nonequilibrium gas-phase condensation of dust at temperatures much lower than those expected from the equilibrium condensation. It was found that the condensation temperatures are lower by a few hundred K or more than the equilibrium temperatures. This explains the results of the recent experimental studies of condensation from a silicate vapor that condensation in such large supercooling reproduces morphologies similar to those of silicate crystals found in meteorites. Our results suggest strongly that the planetesimal bow shock is one of the plausible sites for formation of not only chondrules but also other cosmic crystals in the early solar system.

Cyclotron resonance in the quasi-1D organic superconductor (TMTSF)2ClO4

We report the observation of cyclotron resonance (CR) in a metal possessing pure quasi-one-dimensional Fermiology - namely, the organic linear-chain compound (TMTSF)2ClO4, whose Fermi surface consists of a pair of weakly warped sheets. The CR phenomenon is related to weak inter-chain coupling, which allows electrons constrained on open trajectories to acquire small transverse velocities. Application of an appropriately oriented magnetic field induces periodic motion transverse to the chain direction and, hence, to a resonance in the AC conductivity. The field orientation dependence of the resonance is related simply to the Fermi velocity and lattice periodicity.

Fermiology and superconductivity studies on the non-tetrachalcogenafulvalene structured organic superconductor beta-(BDA-TTP)_2SbF_6

The quantum oscillatory effect and superconductivity in a non-tetrachalcogenafulvalene (TCF) structure based organic superconductor beta-(BDA-TTP)_2SbF_6 are studied. Here the Shubnikov-de Haas effect (SdH) and angular dependent magnetoresistance oscillations (AMRO) are observed. The oscillation frequency associated with a cylindrical Fermi surface is found to be about 4050 tesla, which is also verified by the tunnel diode oscillator (TDO) measurement. The upper critical field Hc2 measurement in a tilted magnetic field and the TDO measurement in the mixed state reveal a highly anisotropic superconducting nature in this material. We compared physical properties of beta-(BDA-TTP)_2SbF_6 with typical TCF structure based quasi two-dimensional organic conductors. A notable feature of beta-(BDA-TTP)_2SbF_6 superconductor is a large value of effective cyclotron mass m_c^*=12.4+/1.1 m_e, which is the largest yet found in an organic superconductor. A possible origin of the enhanced effective mass and its relation to the superconductivity are briefly discussed.

Role of the dimerized gap due to anion ordering in spin-density wave phase of (TMTSF)$_2$ClO$_4$ at high magnetic fields

Magnetoresistance measurements have been carried out along the highly conducting a axis in the FISDW phase of hydrogened and deuterated (TMTSF)$_2$ClO$_4$ for various cooling rates through the anion ordering temperature. With increasing the cooling rate, a) the high field phase boundary $β_{\rm {HI}}$, observed at 27 T in hydrogened samples for slowly cooled, is shifted towards a lower field, b) the last semimetallic SDW phase below $β_{\rm {HI}}$ is suppressed, and c) the FISDW insulating phase above $β_{\rm {HI}}$ is enhanced in both salts. The cooling rate dependence of the FISDW transition and of $β_{\rm {HI}}$ in both salts can be explained by taking into account the peculiar SDW nesting vector stabilized by the dimerized gap due to anion ordering.

Spin-density-wave transition of (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$ at high magnetic fields

The transverse magnetoresistance of the Bechgaard salt (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$ has been measured for various pressures, with the field up to 24 T parallel to the lowest conductivity direction c$^{\ast}$. A quadratic behavior is observed in the magnetic field dependence of the spin-density-wave (SDW) transition temperature $T_{\rm {SDW}}$. With increasing pressure, $T_{\rm {SDW}}$ decreases and the coefficient of the quadratic term increases. These results are consistent with the prediction of the mean-field theory based on the nesting of the quasi one-dimensional Fermi surface. Using a mean field theory, $T_{\rm {SDW}}$ for the perfect nesting case is estimated as about 16 K. This means that even at ambient pressure where $T_{\rm {SDW}}$ is 12 K, the SDW phase of (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$ is substantially suppressed by the two-dimensionality of the system.

SDW and FISDW transition of (TMTSF)$_2$ClO$_4$ at high magnetic fields

The magnetic field dependence of the SDW transition in (TMTSF)$_2$ClO$_4$ for various anion cooling rates has been measured, with the field up to 27T parallel to the lowest conductivity direction $c^{\ast}$. For quenched (TMTSF)$_2$ClO$_4$, the SDW transition temperature $T_{\rm {SDW}}$ increases from 4.5K in zero field up to 8.4K at 27T. A quadratic behavior is observed below 18T, followed by a saturation behavior. These results are consistent with the prediction of the mean-field theory. From these behaviors, $T_{\rm {SDW}}$ is estimated as $T_{\rm {SDW_0}}$=13.5K for the perfect nesting case. This indicates that the SDW phase in quenched (TMTSF)$_2$ClO$_4$, where $T_{\rm {SDW}}$ is less than 6K, is strongly suppressed by the two-dimensionality of the system. In the intermediate cooled state in which the SDW phase does not appear in zero field, the transition temperature for the field-induced SDW shows a quadratic behavior above 12T and there is no saturation behavior even at 27T, in contrast to the FISDW phase in the relaxed state. This behavior can probably be attributed to the difference of the dimerized gap due to anion ordering.

Quantum Hall Transitions in (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$

We have studied the temperature dependence of the integer quantum Hall transitions in the molecular crystal (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$. We find that the transition width between the quantum Hall plateaus does not exhibit the universal power-law scaling behavior of the integer quantum Hall effect observed in semiconducting devices. Instead, the slope of the $ρ_{xy}$ risers, $dρ_{xy}/dB$, and the (inverse) width of the $ρ_{xx}$ peaks, $(ΔB)^{-1}$, show a BCS-like energy gap temperature dependence. We discuss these results in terms of the field-induced spin-density wave gap and order parameter of the system.
