Generation of Multiple Circular Walls on a Thin Film of Nematic Liquid Crystal by Laser Scanning

We found that multiple circular walls (MCW) can be generated on a thin film of a nematic liquid crystal through a spiral scanning of a focused IR laser. The ratios between radii of adjacent rings of MCW were almost constant. These constant ratios can be explained theoretically by minimization of the Frank elastic free energy of nematic medium. The director field on a MCW exhibits chiral symmetry-breaking although the elastic free energies of both chiral MCWs are degenerated, i.e., the director on a MCW can rotate clockwise or counterclockwise along the radial direction.

Nambu system associated with n-dimensional maps

We studied that arbitrary 2-dimensional maps are Hamilton system if a initial value of map is a "time" variable. In this paper, we generalize this correspondence, and show that an n-dimensional map is a Nambu system in which one of initial values of the map play a role of "time" variable.

Electro-Mechanical Fredericks Effects in Nematic Gels

The solid nematic equivalent of the Fredericks transition is found to depend on a critical field rather than a critical voltage as in the classical case. This arises because director anchoring is principally to the solid rubbery matrix of the nematic gel rather than to the sample surfaces. Moreover, above the threshold field, we find a competition between quartic (soft) and conventional harmonic elasticity which dictates the director response. By including a small degree of initial director misorientation, the calculated field variation of optical anisotropy agrees well with the conoscopy measurements of Chang et al (Phys.Rev.E56, 595, 1997) of the electro-optical response of nematic gels.
