Observation of magneto-phonon resonance of Dirac fermions in graphite

Coherent coupling of Dirac fermion magneto-excitons with an optical phonon is observed in graphite as marked magnetic-field dependent splittings and anti-crossing behavior of the two coupled modes. The sharp magneto-phonon resonance occurs in regions of the graphite sample with properties of superior single-layer graphene having enhanced lifetimes of Dirac fermions. The greatly reduced carrier broadening to values below the graphene electron-phonon coupling constant explains the appearance of sharp resonances that reveal a fundamental interaction of Dirac fermions.

Elimination of IR/UV via Gravity in Noncommutative Field Theory

Models of particle physics with Noncommutative Geometry (NCG) generally suffer from a manifestly non-Wilsonian coupling of infrared and ultraviolet degrees of freedom known as the "IR/UV Problem" which would tend to compromise their phenomenological relevance. In this Letter we explicitly show how one may remedy this by coupling NCG to gravity. In the simplest scenario the Lagrangian gets multiplied by a nonconstant background metric; in $ϕ-4$ theory the theorem that $\int d^4 x ϕ\star ϕ= \int d^4 x ϕ^2$ is no longer true and the field propagator gets modified by a factor which depends on both NCG and the variation of the metric. A suitable limit of this factor as the propagating momentum gets asymptotically large then eradicates the IR/UV problem. With gravity and NCG coupled to each other, one might expect anti-symmetric components to arise in the metric. Cosmological implications of such are subsequently discussed.

Soft Spin Wave Near nu=1: Evidence for a Magnetic Instability in Skyrmion Systems

The ground state of the two dimensional electron gas near $ν$=1 is investigated by inelastic light scattering measurements carried down to very low temperatures. Away from $ν$=1, the ferromagnetic spin wave collapses and a new low-energy spin wave emerges below the Zeeman gap. The emergent spin wave shows soft behavior as its energy increases with temperature and reaches the Zeeman energy for temperatures above 2 K. The observed softening indicates an instability of the two dimensional electron gas towards a magnetic order that breaks spin rotational symmetry. We discuss our findings in light of the possible existence of a Skyrme crystal.

Weak coupling d-wave BCS superconductivity and unpaired electrons in overdoped La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} single crystals

The low-temperature specific heat (SH) of overdoped La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} single crystals (0.178=<x=<0.290) has been measured. For the superconducting samples (0.178=<x=<0.238), the derived gap values (without any adjusting parameters) approach closely onto the theoretical prediction Δ_{0}=2.14k_{B}T_{c} for the weak-coupling d-wave BCS superconductivity. In addition, the residual term γ(0) of SH at H=0 increases with x dramatically when beyond x~0.22, and finally evolves into the value of a complete normal metallic state at higher doping levels, indicating growing amount of unpaired electrons. We argue that this large γ(0) cannot be simply attributed to the pair breaking induced by the impurity scattering, instead the phase separation is possible.

Optical study of the charge-density-wave mechanism in 2$H$-TaS$_2$ and Na$_x$TaS$_2$

We report an optical study of transition metal dichalcogenide 2$H$-TaS$_2$ and Na intercalated superconductor Na$_x$TaS$_2$ over a broad frequency range at various temperatures. A clear gap feature was observed for 2$H$-TaS$_2$ when it undergoes a CDW transition. The existence of a Drude component in $σ$$_1$($ω$) below T$_{CDW}$ indicates that the Fermi surface of 2$H$-TaS$_2$ is only partially gapped in CDW state. The spectral evolution of two different Na$_x$TaS$_2$ crystals further confirms that the partial gap structure observed in 2$H$-TaS$_2$ has a CDW origin. The CDW mechanism for 2$H$-TaS$_2$, the competition between CDW and superconductivity in Na$_x$TaS$_2$ system are discussed.

Manipulating vortex motion by thermal and Lorentz force in high temperature superconductors

By using thermal and Lorentz force, the vortex motion is successfully manipulated in the mixed state of underdoped La$_{2 - x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ single crystals and optimally doped YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7 - δ}$ thin films. A conclusion is drawn that the strong Nernst signal above $T_{c}$ is induced by vortex motion. In the normal state, in order to reduce the dissipative contribution from the quasiparticle scattering and enhance the signal due to the possible vortex motion, a new measurement configuration is proposed. It is found that the in-plane Nernst signal ($H$ $| | $ $c$) can be measurable up to a high temperature in the pseudogap region, while the Abrikosov flux flow dissipation can only be measured up to $T_{c}$. This may point to different vortices below and above $T_{c}$ if we attribute the strong Nernst signal in the pseudogap region to the vortex motion. Below $T_{c}$ the dissipation is induced by the motion of the Abrikosov vortices. Above $T_{c}$ the dissipation may be caused by the motion of the spontaneously generated unbinded vortex-antivortex pairs.
