The Apparent "Angular Size - Frequency" Dependence in ~3000 Parsec-scale Extragalactic Jets

The upper envelope of the amplitude of the VLBI visibility function usually represents the most compact structural pattern of extragalactic radio sources, in particular, the "core-jet" morphologies. By fitting the envelope to a circular Gaussian model in ~3000 parsec-scale core-jet structures, we find that the apparent angular size shows significant power-law dependence on the observing frequency (power index n = -0.95 pm 0.37). The dependence is likely to result from synchrotron self-absorption in the inhomogeneous jet and not the free-free absorption (n = -2.5), nor the simple scatter broadening (n leq -2).

Multi-frequency investigation of the parsec- and kilo-parsec-scale radio structures in high-redshift quasar PKS 1402+044

We investigate the frequency-dependent radio properties of the jet of the luminous high-redshift (z = 3.2) radio quasar PKS 1402+044 (J1405+0415) by means of radio interferometric observations. The observational data were obtained with the VLBI Space Observatory Programme (VSOP) at 1.6 and 5 GHz, supplemented by other multi-frequency observations with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA; 2.3, 8.4, and 15 GHz) and the Very Large Array (VLA; 1.4, 5, 15, and 43 GHz). The observations span a period of 7 years. We find that the luminous high-redshift quasar PKS 1402+044 has a pronounced "core-jet" morphology from the parsec to the kilo-parsec scales. The jet shows a steeper spectral index and lower brightness temperature with increasing distance from the jet core. The variation of brightness temperature agrees well with the shock-in-jet model. Assuming that the jet is collimated by the ambient magnetic field, we estimate the mass of the central object as ~10^9 M_sun. The upper limit of the jet proper motion of PKS 1402+044 is 0.03 mas/yr (~3c) in the east-west direction.

Combined microstructural and magneto optical study of current flow in polycrystalline forms of Nd and Sm Fe-oxypnictides

In order to understand why the inter- and intra-granular current densities of polycrystalline superconducting oxypnictides differ by three orders of magnitude, we have conducted combined magneto-optical and microstructural examinations of representative randomly oriented polycrystalline Nd and Sm single-layer oxypnictides. Magneto optical images show that the highest Jc values are observed within single grains oriented with their c axes perpendicular to the observation plane, implying that the intragranular current is anisotropic. The much lower intergranular Jc is at least partially due to many extrinsic factors, because cracks and a ubiquitous wetting As-Fe phase are found at many grain boundaries. However, some grain boundaries are structurally clean under high resolution transmission electron microscopy examination. Because the whole-sample global Jc(5K) values of the two samples examined are 1000-4000 A/cm2, some 10-40 times that found in random, polycrystalline YBa2Cu3O7-x, it appears that the dominant obstruction to intergranular current flow of many present samples is extrinsic, though some intrinsic limitation of current flow across grain boundaries cannot yet be ruled out.

Incommensurate magnetic order in the alpha-Fe(Te,Se) superconductor systems

Magnetic spin fluctuations is one candidate to produce the bosonic modes that mediate the superconductivity in the ferrous superconductors. Up until now, all of the LaOFeAs and BaFe2As2 structure types have simple commensurate magnetic ground states, as result of nesting Fermi surfaces. This type of spin-density-wave (SDW) magnetic order is known to be vulnerable to shifts in the Fermi surface when electronic densities are altered at the superconducting compositions. Superconductivity has more recently been discovered in alpha-Fe(Te,Se), whose electronically active antifluorite planes are isostructural to the FeAs layers found in the previous ferrous superconductors and share with them the same quasi-two-dimensional electronic structure. Here we report neutron scattering studies that reveal a unique complex incommensurate antiferromagnetic order in the parent compound alpha-FeTe. When the long-range magnetic order is suppressed by the isovalent substitution of Te with Se, short-range correlations survive in the superconducting phase.

Measurements of cosmic-ray secondary nuclei at high energies with the first flight of the CREAM balloon-borne experiment

We present new measurements of heavy cosmic-ray nuclei at high energies per- formed during the first flight of the balloon-borne cosmic-ray experiment CREAM (Cosmic-Ray Energetics And Mass). This instrument uses multiple charge detectors and a transition radiation detector to provide the first high accuracy measurements of the relative abundances of elements from boron to oxygen up to energies around 1 TeV/n. The data agree with previous measurements at lower energies and show a relatively steep decline (~E$^-0.6$ to E$^-0.5$) at high energies. They further show the source abundance of nitrogen relative to oxygen is ~10% in the TeV/n region.

Comparative High Field Magneto-Transport of Rare Earth Oxypnictides with Maximum Transition Temperatures

The recent discovery of a new class of superconducting oxypnictides with high transition temperatures may have profound implications for understanding unconventional high-temperature superconductivity. Like the cuprates, the oxypnictides seem to manifest an interleaving of charge donor and superconducting layers emerging upon doping of an antiferromagnetic parent semi-metal. Here we report magneto-transport measurements of three rare earth (Re = La, Nd, Sm) oxypnicide compounds with the transition temperatures near the maximum reported to date, in very high DC and pulsed magnetic fields up to 45 and 54 T, respectively. Our resistivity, Hall coefficient and critical magnetic fields data suggest that these oxypnictide superconductors bridge the gap between MgB$_2$ and YBaCu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ as far as electromagnetic and vortex properties are concerned.

Pressure Effect on Superconductivity of Iron-based Arsenic-oxide ReFeAsO0.85 (Re=Sm and Nd)

Here we report pressure effect on superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of ReFeAsO0.85 (Re= Sm and Nd) system without fluorine doping. In-situ measurements under high pressure showed that Tc of the two compounds decrease monotonously over the pressure range investigated. The pressure coefficients dTc/dP in SmFeAsO0.85 and Nd FeAsO0.85 were different, revealing the important influence of the deformation in layers on Tc. Theoretical calculations suggested that the electron density of states decrease with increasing pressure, following the same trend of experimental data.

Optical spectroscopy of superconducting Ba{0.55}K{0.45}Fe2As2: evidence for strong coupling to low energy bosons

Optical spectroscopy on single crystals of the new iron arsenide superconductor Ba{0.55}K{0.45}Fe2As2 shows that the infrared spectrum consists of two major components: a strong metallic Drude band and a well separated mid infrared absorption centered at 0.7 eV. It is difficult to separate the two components unambiguously but several fits of Lorentzian peaks suggest a model with a Drude peak having a plasma frequency of 1.8 to 2.1 eV and a midinfrared peak with a plasma frequency of 2.5 eV. In contrast to the cuprate superconductors the scattering rate obtained from the extended Drude model saturates at 150 meV as compared to 500 meV for a typical cuprate. Detailed analysis of the frequency dependent scattering rate shows that the charge carriers interact with broad bosonic spectrum with a peak at 25 meV and a coupling constant lambda =approx 2 at low temperature. As the temperature increases this coupling weakens to lambda=0.6 at ambient temperature. This suggests a bosonic spectrum that is similar to what is seen in the lower Tc cuprates.

Enhancement of CO detection in Al doped graphene

A principle of enhancement CO adsorption was developed theoretically by using density functional theory through doping Al into graphene. The results show that the Al doped graphene has strong chemisorption of CO molecule by forming Al-CO bond, where CO onto intrinsic graphene remains weak physisorption. Furthermore, the enhancement of CO sensitivity in the Al doped graphene is determined by a large electrical conductivity change after adsorption, where CO absorption leads to increase of electrical conductivity upon via introducing large amount of shallow acceptor states. Therefore, this newly developed Al doped graphene would be an excellent candidate for sensing CO gas.

Evidence for two distinct scales of current flow in polycrystalline Sm and Nd iron oxypnictides

Early studies have found quasi-reversible magnetization curves in polycrystalline bulk rare-earth iron oxypnictides that suggest either wide-spread obstacles to intergranular current or very weak vortex pinning. In the present study of polycrystalline samarium and neodymium rare-earth iron oxypnictide samples made by high pressure synthesis, the hysteretic magnetization is significantly enhanced. Magneto optical imaging and study of the field dependence of the remanent magnetization as a function of particle size both show that global currents over the whole sample do exist but that the intergranular and intragranular current densities have distinctively different temperature dependences and differ in magnitude by about 1000. Assuming that the highest current density loops are restricted to circulation only within grains leads to values of ~5 MA/cm2 at 5 K and self field, while whole-sample current densities, though two orders of magnitude lower are 1000-10000 A/cm2, some two orders of magnitude higher than in random polycrystalline cuprates. We cannot yet be certain whether this large difference in global and intragrain current density is intrinsic to the oxypnictides or due to extrinsic barriers to current flow, because the samples contain significant second phase, some of which wets the grain boundaries and produces evidences of SNS proximity effect in the whole sample critical current.

Pressure Effect on the superconducting properties of LaO_{1-x}F_{x}FeAs(x=0.11) superconductor

Diamagnetic susceptibility measurements under high hydrostatic pressure (up to 1.03 GPa) were carried out on the newly discovered Fe-based superconductor LaO_{1-x}F_{x}FeAs(x=0.11). The transition temperature T_c, defined as the point at the maximum slope of superconducting transition, was enhanced almost linearly by hydrostatic pressure, yielding a dT_c/dP of about 1.2 K/GPa. Differential diamagnetic susceptibility curves indicate that the underlying superconducting state is complicated. It is suggested that pressure plays an important role on pushing low T_c superconducting phase toward the main (optimal) superconducting phase.

Manifestation of pseudogap in ab-plane optical characteristics

A model in which a gap forms in the renormalized electronic density of state (DOS) with missing states recovered just above the pseudogap $Δ_{pg}$, is able to give a robust description of the striking, triangular like, peak seen in the real part of the optical self-energy of underdoped cuprates. We use this model to explore the effect of the pseudogap on the real part of the optical conductivity and on the partial sum rule associated with it. An important result is that the optical spectral weight redistributes over a much larger frequency window than it does in the DOS.

The VSOP 5 GHz Active Galactic Nucleus Survey: V. Imaging Results for the Remaining 140 sources

In February 1997, the Japanese radio astronomy satellite HALCA was launched to provide the space-bourne element for the VLBI Space Observatory Programme (VSOP) mission. Approximately twenty-five percent of the mission time was dedicated to the VSOP Survey of bright compact Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) at 5 GHz. This paper, the fifth in the series, presents images and models for the remaining 140 sources not included in Paper III, which contained 102 sources. For most sources, the plots of the uv-coverage, the visibility amplitude versus uv-distance, and the high resolution image are presented. Model fit parameters to the major radio components are determined, and the brightness temperature of the core component for each source is calculated. The brightness temperature distributions for all of the sources in the VSOP AGN survey are discussed.

A generalized Petviashvili iteration method for scalar and vector Hamiltonian equations with arbitrary form of nonlinearity

The Petviashvili's iteration method has been known as a rapidly converging numerical algorithm for obtaining fundamental solitary wave solutions of stationary scalar nonlinear wave equations with power-law nonlinearity: \ $-Mu+u^p=0$, where $M$ is a positive definite self-adjoint operator and $p={\rm const}$. In this paper, we propose a systematic generalization of this method to both scalar and vector Hamiltonian equations with arbitrary form of nonlinearity and potential functions. For scalar equations, our generalized method requires only slightly more computational effort than the original Petviashvili method.

A mode elimination technique to improve convergence of iteration methods for finding solitary waves

We extend the key idea behind the generalized Petviashvili method of Ref. \cite{gP} by proposing a novel technique based on a similar idea. This technique systematically eliminates from the iteratively obtained solution a mode that is "responsible" either for the divergence or the slow convergence of the iterations. We demonstrate, theoretically and with examples, that this mode elimination technique can be used both to obtain some nonfundamental solitary waves and to considerably accelerate convergence of various iteration methods. As a collateral result, we compare the linearized iteration operators for the generalized Petviashvili method and the well-known imaginary-time evolution method and explain how their different structures account for the differences in the convergence rates of these two methods.

Molecular outflows around high-mass young stellar objects

We present a study of molecular outflows using high-resolution mapping of the CO (1-0) line emission toward eight relatively nearby 6.7 GHz methanol masers, which are associated with massive star forming regions. Outflows were detected in seven out of eight sources, and five of them clearly show bipolar or multiple outflow morphologies. These outflows have typical masses of a few solar masses, momenta of tens of $M_{\odot}$ km s$^{-1}$, kinetic energies of $\sim$ 10$^{45}$ ergs, and the mass entrainment rate of a few $10^{-5} M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$. They have significantly more mass and kinetic energy than their low-mass counterparts. In some of the sources, the massive outflow is obviously associated with a particular massive star in the cluster, while in others the origin remains uncertain. The high detection rate of outflows toward methanol masers suggests that the outflow phase of massive protostars encompasses the methanol maser phase.

The infrared conductivity of Na$_x$CoO$_2$: evidence of gapped states

We present infrared ab-plane conductivity data for the layered cobaltate Na$_x$CoO$_2$ at three different doping levels ($x=0.25, 0.50$, and 0.75). The Drude weight increases monotonically with hole doping, $1-x$. At the lowest hole doping level $x$=0.75 the system resembles the normal state of underdoped cuprate superconductors with a scattering rate that varies linearly with frequency and temperature and there is an onset of scattering by a bosonic mode at 600 \cm. Two higher hole doped samples ($x=0.50$ and 0.25) show two different-size gaps (110 \cm and 200 \cm, respectively) in the optical conductivities at low temperatures and become insulators. The spectral weights lost in the gap region of 0.50 and 0.25 samples are shifted to prominent peaks at 200 \cm and 800 \cm, respectively. We propose that the two gapped states of the two higher hole doped samples ($x$=0.50 and 0.25) are pinned charge ordered states.

The a-axis optical conductivity of detwinned ortho-II YBa_2Cu_3O_6.50

The a-axis optical properties of a detwinned single crystal of YBa_2Cu_3O_6.50 in the ortho II phase (Ortho II Y123, T_c= 59 K) were determined from reflectance data over a wide frequency range (70 - 42 000 cm^-1) for nine temperature values between 28 and 295 K. Above 200 K the spectra are dominated by a broad background of scattering that extends to 1 eV. Below 200 K a shoulder in the reflectance appears and signals the onset of scattering at 400 cm^-1. In this temperature range we also observe a peak in the optical conductivity at 177 cm^-1. Below 59 K, the superconducting transition temperature, the spectra change dramatically with the appearance of the superconducting condensate. Its spectral weight is consistent, to within experimental error, with the Ferrell-Glover-Tinkham (FGT) sum rule. We also compare our data with magnetic neutron scattering on samples from the same source that show a strong resonance at 31 meV. We find that the scattering rates can be modeled as the combined effect of the neutron resonance and a bosonic background in the presence of a density of states with a pseudogap. The model shows that the decreasing amplitude of the neutron resonance with temperature is compensated for by an increasing of the bosonic background yielding a net temperature independent scattering rate at high frequencies. This is in agreement with the experiments.
