Geometry and topological order in the non-relativistic Luttinger liquid

We demonstrate that the notion of spin-charge separation as follows from the Tomonaga-Luttinger theory of relativistic fermions does not suffice to completely specify the Luttinger liquid state associated with the fermions of condensed matter physics. The latter carries in addition a form of topological order which can be made visible using non-local correlation functions familiar from lattice gauge theory.

Stripe fractionalization I: the generation of Ising local symmetry

This is part one in a series of two papers dedicated to the notion that the destruction of the topological order associated with stripe phases is about the simplest theory controlled by local symmetry: Ising gauge theory. This first part is intended to be a tutorial- we will exploit the simple physics of the stripes to vividly display the mathematical beauty of the gauge theory. Stripes, as they occur in the cuprates, are clearly `topological' in the sense that the lines of charges are at the same time domain walls in the antiferromagnet. Imagine that the stripes quantum melt so that all what seems to be around is a singlet superconductor. What if this domain wall-ness is still around in a delocalized form? This turns out to be exactly the kind of `matter' which is described by the Ising gauge theory. The highlight of the theory is the confinement phenomenon, meaning that when the domain wall-ness gives up it will do so in a meat-and-potato phase transition. We suggest that this transition might be the one responsible for the quantum criticality in the cuprates. In part two, we will become more practical, arguing that another phase is possible according to the theory. It might be that this quantum spin-nematic has already been observed in strongly underdoped LSCO.

Stripe fractionalization II: the quantum spin nematic and the Abrikosov lattice

In part (I) of this two paper series on stripe fractionalization, we argued that in principle the `domain wall-ness' of the stripe phase could persist in the spin and charge disordered superconductors, and we demonstrated how this physics is in one-to-one correspondence with Ising gauge theory. Here we focus on yet another type of order suggested by the gauge theory: the quantum spin nematic. Although it is not easy to measure this order directly, we argue that the superconducting vortices act as perturbations destroying the gauge symmetry locally. This turns out to give rise to a simple example of a gauge-theoretical phenomenon known as topological interaction. As a consequence, at any finite vortex density a globally ordered antiferromagnet emerges. This offers a potential explanation for recent observations in the underdoped 214 system.

Impurity states and interlayer tunneling in high temperature superconductors

We argue that the Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) images of resonant states generated by doping Zn or Ni impurities into Cu-O planes of BSCCO are the result of quantum interference of the impurity signal coming from several distinct paths. The impurity image seen on the surface is greatly affected by interlayer tunneling matrix elements. We find that the optimal tunneling path between the STM tip and the metal (Cu, Zn, or Ni) $d_{x^2 - y^2}$ orbitals in the Cu-O plane involves intermediate excited states. This tunneling path leads to the four-fold nonlocal filter of the impurity state in Cu-O plane that explains the experimental impurity spectra. Applications of the tunneling filter to the Cu vacancy defects and ``direct'' tunneling into Cu-O planes are also discussed.

First time determination of the microscopic structure of a stripe phase: Low temperature NMR in La2NiO4.17

The experimental observations of stripes in superconducting cuprates and insulating nickelates clearly show the modulation in charge and spin density. However, these have proven to be rather insensitive to the harmonic structure and (site or bond) ordering. Using 139La NMR in La2NiO4.17, we show that in the 1/3 hole doped nickelate below the freezing temperature the stripes are strongly solitonic and site ordered with Ni3+ ions carrying S=1/2 in the domain walls and Ni2+ ions with S=1 in the domains.

Emergent Z_2 gauge symmetry and spin-charge separation in one dimensional physics

We demonstrate that in the scaling limit the phenomenon of spin-charge separation as encountered in Luttinger liquids defined on the lattice can be associated with the emergence of local Ising symmetry. This Z_2 gauge field is of geometrical nature (sublattice parity) and the Luttinger liquid corresponds with the critical point where the symmetry is on the verge of becoming local. We argue that in a true one dimensional superconductor the local symmetry will be fully realized as long as the geometrical structure associated with spin-charge separation is maintained.

The gas of elastic quantum strings in 2+1 dimensions: finite temperatures

The finite temperature physics of the gas of elastic quantum strings as introduced in J. Zaanen, Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 753 is investigated. This model is inspired on the stripes in the high Tc superconductors. We analyze in detail how the kinetic interactions of the zero temperature quantum problem crossover into the entropic interactions of the high temperature limit.

The geometric order of stripes and Luttinger liquids

It is argued that the electron stripes as found in correlated oxides have to do with an unrecognized form of order. The manifestation of this order is the robust property that the charge stripes are at the same time anti-phase boundaries in the spin system. We demonstrate that the quantity which is ordering is sublattice parity, referring to the geometric property of a bipartite lattice that it can be subdivided in two sublattices in two different ways. Re-interpreting standard results of one dimensional physics, we demonstrate that the same order is responsible for the phenomenon of spin-charge separation in strongly interacting one dimensional electron systems. In fact, the stripe phases can be seen from this perspective as the precise generalization of the Luttinger liquid to higher dimensions. Most of this paper is devoted to a detailed exposition of the mean-field theory of sublattice parity order in 2+1 dimensions. Although the quantum-dynamics of the spin- and charge degrees of freedom is fully taken into account, a perfect sublattice parity order is imposed. Due to novel order-out-of-disorder physics, the sublattice parity order gives rise to full stripe order at long wavelength. This adds further credibility to the notion that stripes find their origin in the microscopic quantum fluctuations and it suggests a novel viewpoint on the relationship between stripes and high Tc superconductivity.

Spin dynamics and ordering of a cuprate stripe-antiferromagnet

In La1.48Nd0.4Sr0.12CuO4 the 139La and 63Cu NQR relaxation rates and signal wipe-out upon lowering temperature are shown to be due to purely magnetic fluctuations. They follow the same renormalized classical behavior as seen in neutron data, when the electronic spins order in stripes, with a small spread in spin stiffness (15% spread in activation energy). The La signal, which reappears at low temperatures, is magnetically broadened and experiences additional wipe-out due to slowing down of the Nd fluctuations.

Order-out-of-disorder in a gas of elastic quantum strings in 2+1 dimensions

A limiting case of a dynamical stripe state which is of potential significance to cuprate superconductors is considered: a gas of elastic quantum strings in 2+1 dimensions, interacting merely via a hard-core condition. It is demonstrated that this gas solidifies always, by a mechanism which is the quantum analogue of the entropic interactions known from soft condensed matter physics.

Interplay of superconductivity and magnetism in strong coupling

A model is introduced describing the interplay between superconductivity and spin-ordering. It is characterized by on-site repulsive electron-electron interactions, causing antiferromagnetism, and nearest-neighbor attractive interactions, giving rise to d-wave superconductivity. Due to a special choice for the lattice, this model has a strong-coupling limit where the superconductivity can be described by a bosonic theory, similar to the strongly coupled negative U Hubbard model. This limit is analyzed in the present paper. A rich mean-field phase diagram is found and the leading quantum corrections to the mean-field results are calculated. The first-order line between the antiferromagnetic- and the superconducting phase is found to terminate at a tricritical point, where two second-order lines originate. At these lines, the system undergoes a transition to- and from a phase exhibiting both antiferromagnetic order and superconductivity. At finite temperatures above the spin-disordering line, quantum-critical behavior is found. For specific values of the model parameters, it is possible to obtain SO(5) symmetry involving the spin- and the phase-sector at the tricritical point. Although this symmetry is explicitly broken by the projection to the lower Hubbard band, it survives on the mean-field level, and modes related to a spontaneously broken SO(5) symmetry are present on the level of the random phase approximation in the superconducting phase.

Similarity of slow stripe fluctations between Sr-doped cuprates and oxygen-doped nickelates

Stripe fluctuations in La2NiO4.17 have been studied by 139La NMR using the field and temperature dependence of the linewidth and relaxation rates. In the formation process of the stripes the NMR line intensity is maximal below 230K, starts to diminish around 140K, disappears around 50K and recovers at 4K. These results are shown to be consistent with, but completely complementary to neutron measurements, and to be generic for oxygen doped nickelates and underdoped cuprates.

Classical frustration and quantum disorder in spin-orbital models

The most elementary of all physical spin-orbital models is the Kugel-Khomskii model describing a S=1/2, $e_g$ degenerate Mott-insulator. Recent theoretical work is reviewed revealing that the classical limit is characterized by a point of perfect dynamical frustration. It is suggested that this might give rise to a quantum disordered ground state.

Spin-only approach to quantum magnetism in the ordered stripe state

It has been argued that the spin-dynamics in cuprate superconductors is governed by the proximity to a zero-temperature critical point. This critical point would be related to a transition from the superconducting phase to an ordered stripe state. Using a coupled spin-ladder model, we investigate to what extent the strong quantum spin-fluctuations in the ordered stripe state can be attributed to the spin sector. For the bond-centered stripes, we find that our spin-only model can account for the observed spin-fluctuations. For site-ordered stripes, coupling of the spin and charge sector is needed.

Stripes in La2NiO4.17: charge and spin ordering according to NMR

Charge and spin ordering in La2NiO4.17 has been studied by 139La NMR using the field and temperature dependence of the linewidth and relaxation rates. The stripes are site centered and the domain spins freeze at ~ 180 K, followed by a second transition at ~ 50 K, where the spins on the domain walls freeze. Although consistent with the neutron measurements, the results are quantitatively different from the NMR results in a nickelate with quenched Sr disorder.

Metallic stripes: separation of spin-, charge-, and string fluctuation

Inspired by the cuprate stripes, the problem of a one dimensional metal living on a delocalized trajectory in two dimensional space is considered. Under the assumption that a localized and charge incompressible reference string state exists, the long wavelength theory is deduced which corresponds to a Luttinger liquid with an additional sector of independent string modes.
