Transport in one dimensional Coulomb gases: From ion channels to nanopores

We consider a class of systems where, due to the large mismatch of dielectric constants, the Coulomb interaction is approximately one-dimensional. Examples include ion channels in lipid membranes and water filled nanopores in silicon or cellulose acetate films. Charge transport across such systems possesses the activation behavior associated with the large electrostatic self-energy of a charge placed inside the channel. We show here that the activation barrier exhibits non-trivial dependence on the salt concentration in the surrounding water solution and on the length and radius of the channel.

Long-term Scintillation Observations of Five Pulsars at 1540 MHz

From 2001 January to 2002 June, we monitored PSRs B0329+54, B0823+26, B1929+10, B2020+28 and B2021+51 using the Nanshan 25-m radio telescope of Urumqi Observatory to study their diffractive interstellar scintillation (DISS). The average interval between observations was about 9 days and the observation duration ranged between 2 and 6 hours depending on the pulsar. Wide variations in the DISS parameters were observed over the 18-month data span. Despite this, the average scintillation velocities are in excellent agreement with the proper motion velocities. The average two-dimensional autocorrelation function for PSR B0329+54 is well described by a thin-screen Kolmogorov model, at least along the time and frequency axes. Observed modulation indices for the DISS time scale and bandwidth and the pulsar flux density are greater than values predicted for a Kolmogorov spectrum of electron density fluctuations. Correlated variations over times long compared to the nominal refractive scintillation time are observed, suggesting that larger-scale density fluctuations are important. For these pulsars, the scintillation bandwidth as a function of frequency has a power-law index (~3.6) much less than expected for Kolmogorov turbulence (~4.4). Sloping fringes are commonly observed in the dynamic spectra, especially for PSR B0329+54. The detected range of fringe slopes are limited by our observing resolution. Our observations are sensitive to larger-scale fringes and hence smaller refractive angles, corresponding to the central part of the scattering disk.

Expansion of a lithium gas in the BEC-BCS crossover

We report on experiments in $^6$Li Fermi gases near Feshbach resonances. A broad s-wave resonance is used to form a Bose-Einstein condensate of weakly bound $^6$Li$_2$ molecules in a crossed optical trap. The measured molecule-molecule scattering length of $170^{+100}_{-60}$ nm at 770 G is found in good agreement with theory. The expansion energy of the cloud in the BEC-BCS crossover region is measured. Finally we discuss the properties of p-wave Feshbach resonances observed near 200 Gauss and new s-wave resonances in the heteronuclear $^6$Li- $^7$Li mixture.

P-wave Feshbach resonances of ultra-cold $^6$Li

We report the observation of three p-wave Feshbach resonances of $^6$Li atoms in the lowest hyperfine state $f=1/2$. The positions of the resonances are in good agreement with theory. We study the lifetime of the cloud in the vicinity of the Feshbach resonances and show that depending on the spin states, 2- or 3-body mechanisms are at play. In the case of dipolar losses, we observe a non-trivial temperature dependence that is well explained by a simple model.

Unusual glitch behaviours of two young pulsars

In this paper we report unusual glitches in two young pulsars, PSR J1825-0935 (B1822-09) and PSR J1835-1106. For PSR J1825-0935, a slow glitch characterised by a temporary decrease in the slowdown rate occurred between 2000 December 31 to 2001 December 6. This event resulted in a permanent increase in frequency with fractional size $Δν/ν\sim31.2(2)\times10^{-9}$, however little effect remained in slowdown rate. The glitch in PSR J1835-1106 occurred abruptly in November 2001 (MJD 52220\pm3) with $Δν/ν\sim14.6(4)\times10^{-9}$ and little or no change in the slow-down rate. A significant change in $\ddotν$ apparently occurred at the glitch with $\ddotν$ having opposite sign for the pre- and post-glitch data.

Entangling flux qubits with a bipolar dynamic inductance

We propose a scheme to implement variable coupling between two flux qubits using the screening current response of a dc Superconducting QUantum Interference Device (SQUID). The coupling strength is adjusted by the current bias applied to the SQUID and can be varied continuously from positive to negative values, allowing cancellation of the direct mutual inductance between the qubits. We show that this variable coupling scheme permits efficient realization of universal quantum logic. The same SQUID can be used to determine the flux states of the qubits.

Measurement of Branching Fraction and CP Asymmetry in B+ ->rho+ pi0

We report a measurement of the branching fraction for the decay $B^+ \to ρ^+π^0$ based on a 140 ${\rm fb}^{-1}$ data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric $e^+e^-$ collider. We measure the branching fraction ${\cal B}(B^+ \to ρ^+π^0)=(13.2\pm 2.3({\rm stat.})^{+1.4}_{-1.9}({\rm sys.}))\times 10^{-6}$, and the CP-violating asymmetry ${\cal A}_{CP}(B^\mp \to ρ^\mpπ^0)=0.06\pm0.19({\rm stat.})^{+0.04}_{-0.06}({\rm sys.})$.

Elongation and fluctuations of semi-flexible polymers in a nematic solvent

We directly visualize single polymers with persistence lengths ranging from $\ell_p=0.05$ to 16 $μ$m, dissolved in the nematic phase of rod-like {\it fd} virus. Polymers with sufficiently large persistence length undergo a coil-rod transition at the isotropic-nematic transition of the background solvent. We quantitatively analyze the transverse fluctuations of semi-flexible polymers and show that at long wavelengths they are driven by the fluctuating nematic background. We extract both the Odijk deflection length and the elastic constant of the background nematic phase from the data.

Observation of B+ -> rho+ rho0

We report the first observation of the charmless vector-vector decay process B+ ->rho+ rho0. The measurement uses a 78 fb^{-1} data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric e+e- collider operating at the Upsilon(4S) resonance. We obtain a branching fraction of Br(B+ ->rho+ rho0)=(31.7+-7.1(stat.)+3.8-6.7(sys.))*10^{-6}. An analysis of the rho helicity-angle distributions gives a longitudinal polarization of Gamma_{L}/Gamma=(94.8+-10.6(stat.)+-2.1(sys.))%.

Conductivity of a 2DEG in Si/SiGe heterostructure near metal- insulator transition: role of the short and long range scattering potential

We report the observation of a metal-insulator transition (MIT) in a two- dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in a Si/SiGe heterostructure at zero magnetic field. On going through the MIT we observe the corresponding evolution of the magnetic field induced transition between the insulating phase and the quantum Hall (QH) liquid state in the QH regime. Similar to the previous reports for a GaAs sample, we find that the critical magnetic field needed to produce the transition becomes zero at the critical electron density corresponding to the zero field MIT. The temperature dependence of the conductivity in a metallic-like state at zero field is compared with the theory of the interaction corrections at intermediate and ballistic regimes $k_{B}Tτ/\hbar\geq1$. The theory yields a good fit for the linear part of the curve. However the slope of that part of $σ_{xx}(T)$ is about two times smaller than that reported in other 2D systems with similar values of $r_s$. At the same time, the recent theory of magnetoresistance due to electron-electron interaction in the case of arbitrary $k_{B}Tτ/\hbar$, smooth disorder and classically strong fields does not seem to be quite adequate for the description of the parabolic magnetoresistance observed in our samples. We attribute these results to the fact that neither of these theories deals with the whole scattering potential in a sample but leaves either its long range or its short range component out of consideration.

Zener Tunneling Between Landau Orbits in a High-Mobility Two-Dimensional Electron Gas

Magnetotransport in a laterally confined two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) can exhibit modified scattering channels owing to a tilted Hall potential. Transitions of electrons between Landau levels with shifted guiding centers can be accomplished through a Zener tunneling mechanism, and make a significant contribution to the magnetoresistance. A remarkable oscillation effect in weak field magnetoresistance has been observed in high-mobility 2DEGs in GaAs-AlGa$_{0.3}$As$_{0.7}$ heterostructures, and can be well explained by the Zener mechanism.

Dry Friction due to Adsorbed Molecules

Using an adiabatic approximation method, which searches for Tomlinson model-like instabilities for a simple but still realistic model for two crystalline surfaces in the extremely light contact limit, with mobile molecules present at the interface, sliding relative to each other, we are able to account for the virtually universal occurrence of "dry friction." The model makes important predictions for the dependence of friction on the strength of the interaction of each surface with the mobile molecules.

A High Spectral Resolution Observation of the Soft X-ray Diffuse Background with Thermal Detectors

A high spectral resolution observation of the diffuse X-ray background in the 60 - 1000 eV energy range has been made using an array of thirty-six 1 mm^2 micro-calorimeters flown on a sounding rocket. Detector energy resolution ranged from 5-12 eV FWHM, and a composite spectrum of ~ 1 steradian of the background centered at l = 90, b = +60 was obtained with a net resolution of ~ 9 eV. The target area includes bright 1/4 keV regions, but avoids Loop I and the North Polar Spur. Lines of C VI, O VII, and O VIII are clearly detected with intensities of 5.4 +/- 2.3, 4.8 +/- 0.8, and 1.6 +/- 0.4 photons cm^-2 s^-1 sr^-1, respectively. The oxygen lines alone account for a majority of the diffuse background observed in the ROSAT R4 band that is not due to resolved extragalactic discrete sources. We also have a positive detection of the Fe-M line complex near 70 eV at an intensity consistent with previous upper limits that indicate substantial gas phase depletion of iron. We include a detailed description of the instrument and its detectors.

A Detailed Monte-Carlo Simulation for the Belle TOF System

We have developed a detailed Monte Carlo simulation program for the Belle TOF system. Based on GEANT simulation, it takes account of all physics processes in the TOF scintillation counters and readout electronics. The simulation reproduces very well the performance of the Belle TOF system, including the dE/dx response, the time walk effect, the time resolution, and the hit efficiency due to beam background. In this report, we will describe the Belle TOF simulation program in detail.

Pulsar Timing at Urumqi Astronomical Observatory: Observing System and Results

A pulsar timing system has been operating in the 18-cm band at the Urumqi Astronomical Observatory 25-m telescope since mid-1999. Frequency resolution allowing dedispersion of the pulsar signals is provided by a 2X128X2.5 MHz filterbank/digitiser system. Observations of 74 pulsars over more than 12 months have resulted in updated pulsar periods and period derivatives, as well as improved positions. Comparison with previous measurements showed that the changes in period and period derivative tend to have the same sign and to be correlated in amplitude. A model based on unseen glitches gives a good explanation of the observed changes, suggesting that long-term fluctuations in period and period derivatives are dominated by glitches. In 2000 July, we detected a glitch of relative amplitude Delta_nu/nu~24X1e-9 in the Crab pulsar. The post-glitch decay appears similar to other large Crab glitches.

Neutrons from multiplicity-selected La-La and Nb-Nb collisions at 400A MeV and La-La collisions at 250A MeV

Triple-differential cross sections for neutrons from high-multiplicity La-La collisions at 250 and 400 MeV per nucleon and Nb-Nb collisions at 400 MeV per nucleon were measured at several polar angles as a function of the azimuthal angle with respect to the reaction plane of the collision. The reaction plane was determined by a transverse-velocity method with the capability of identifying charged-particles with Z=1, Z=2, and Z > 2. The flow of neutrons was extracted from the slope at mid-rapidity of the curve of the average in-plane momentum vs the center-of-mass rapidity. The squeeze-out of the participant neutrons was observed in a direction normal to the reaction plane in the normalized momentum coordinates in the center-of-mass system. Experimental results of the neutron squeeze-out were compared with BUU calculations. The polar-angle dependence of the maximum azimuthal anisotropy ratio $r(θ)$ was found to be insensitive to the mass of the colliding nuclei and the beam energy. Comparison of the observed polar-angle dependence of the maximum azimuthal anisotropy ratio $r(θ)$ with BUU calculations for free neutrons revealed that $r(θ)$ is insensitive also to the incompressibility modulus in the nuclear equation of state.

The Height Structure of the Solar Atmosphere from the EUV Perspective

We investigate the structure of the solar chromosphere and transition region using full Sun images obtained with the Extreme Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT) aboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) spacecraft. The limb seen in the EIT coronal images (taken in lines of Fe IX/X at 171 Å, Fe XII at 195 Åand Fe XV at 284 Å) is an absorption limb predicted by models to occur at the top of the chromosphere where the density of neutral hydrogen becomes significant ($\sim10^{10}$ cm$^{-3}$). The transition-region limb seen in He II 304 Åimages is an emission limb. We find: (1) the limb is higher at the poles than at the equator both in the coronal images (by 1300 $\pm$ 650 km) and the 304 Åimages (by 3500 $\pm$ 120 0 km); and (2) the 304 Ålimb is significantly higher than the limb in the coronal images. The height difference is 3100 $\pm$ 1200 km at the equator, and 6600 $\pm$ 1200 km at the poles. We suggest that the elevation of the 304 Ålimb above the limb in the coronal images may be due to the upper surface of the chromosphere being bumpy, possibly because of the presence of spicules. The polar extension is consistent with a reduced heat input to the chromosphere in the polar coronal holes compared with the quiet--Sun atmosphere at the equator.
