Gaze Gestures and Their Applications in human-computer interaction with a head-mounted display

A head-mounted display (HMD) is a portable and interactive display device. With the development of 5G technology, it may become a general-purpose computing platform in the future. Human-computer interaction (HCI) technology for HMDs has also been of significant interest in recent years. In addition to tracking gestures and speech, tracking human eyes as a means of interaction is highly effective. In this paper, we propose two UnityEyes-based convolutional neural network models, UEGazeNet and UEGazeNet*, which can be used for input images with low resolution and high resolution, respectively. These models can perform rapid interactions by classifying gaze trajectories (GTs), and a GTgestures dataset containing data for 10,200 "eye-painting gestures" collected from 15 individuals is established with our gaze-tracking method. We evaluated the performance both indoors and outdoors and the UEGazeNet can obtaine results 52\% and 67\% better than those of state-of-the-art networks. The generalizability of our GTgestures dataset using a variety of gaze-tracking models is evaluated, and an average recognition rate of 96.71\% is obtained by our method.

Two New "Turn-off" Changing-look Active Galactic nuclei and Implication on "Partially Obscured" AGNs

We here report a spectroscopic identification of two new changing-look AGNs (CL-AGNs): SDSS\,J104705.16+544405.8 and SDSS\,J120447.91+170256.8 both with a "turn-off" type transition from type 1 to type 1.8/1.9. The identification is arrived by a follow-up spectroscopic observation of the five changing-look AGN (CL-AGN) candidates that are extracted from the sample recently released in Macleod et al. The candidates are extract by the authors from the Sloan Digit Sky Survey Data Release 7 spectroscopically confirmed quasars with large amplitude variability. By compiling a sample of 26 previously identified CL-AGNs, we confirm the claim in Macleod et al. that CL-AGNs tend to be biased against low Eddington ratio, and identify an overlap between the CL-AGNs at their dim state and the so-called intermediate-type AGNs. The overlap implies that there two populations of the intermediate-type AGNs with different origins. One is due to the torus orientation effect, and the another the intrinsic change of the accretion rate of the central supermassive blackholes.

Supersymmetric Models in Light of Improved Higgs Mass Calculations

We discuss the parameter spaces of supersymmetry (SUSY) scenarios taking into account the improved Higgs-mass prediction provided by FeynHiggs 2.14.1. Among other improvements, this prediction incorporates three-loop renormalization-group effects and two-loop threshold corrections, and can accommodate three separate mass scales: m_{\tilde q} (for squarks), m_{\tilde g} (for gluinos) and m_{\tildeχ} (for electroweakinos). Furthermore, it contains an improved treatment of the DRbar scalar top parameters avoiding problems with the conversion to on-shell parameters, that yields more accurate results for large SUSY-breaking scales. We first consider the CMSSM, in which the soft SUSY-breaking parameters m_0 and m_{1/2} are universal at the GUT scale, and then sub-GUT models in which universality is imposed at some lower scale. In both cases, we consider the constraints from the Higgs-boson mass M_h in the bulk of the (m_0, m_{1/2}) plane and also along stop coannihilation strips where sparticle masses may extend into the multi-TeV range. We then consider the minimal anomaly-mediated SUSY-breaking (mAMSB) scenario, in which large sparticle masses are generic. In all these scenarios the substantial improvements between the calculations of M_h in FeynHiggs 2.14.1 and FeynHiggs 2.10.0, which was used in an earlier study, change significantly the preferred portions of the models' parameter spaces. Finally, we consider the pMSSM11, in which sparticle masses may be significantly smaller and we find only small changes in the preferred regions of parameter space.

Fast thermal relaxation in cavity-coupled graphene bolometers with a Johnson noise read-out

Since the invention of the bolometer, its main design principles relied on efficient light absorption into a low-heat-capacity material and its exceptional thermal isolation from the environment. While the reduced thermal coupling to its surroundings allows for an enhanced thermal response, it in turn strongly reduces the thermal time constant and dramatically lowers the detector's bandwidth. With its unique combination of a record small electronic heat capacity and a weak electron-phonon coupling, graphene has emerged as an extreme bolometric medium that allows for both, high sensitivity and high bandwidths. Here, we introduce a hot-electron bolometer based on a novel Johnson noise readout of the electron gas in graphene, which is critically coupled to incident radiation through a photonic nanocavity. This proof-of-concept operates in the telecom spectrum, achieves an enhanced bolometric response at charge neutrality with a noise equivalent power NEP < 5pW/ Sqrt(Hz), a thermal relaxation time of τ < 34ps, an improved light absorption by a factor ~3, and an operation temperature up to T=300K.

Tailored Raman-resonant four-wave-mixing process

Nonlinear optical processes are strongly dominated by phase relationships among electromagnetic fields that are relevant to its optical process. In this paper, we theoretically and experimentally show, as a typical example, that in a Raman-resonant four-wave-mixing process, the first anti-Stokes and Stokes generations can be tailored to a variety of forms by manipulating the phase relationships among the relevant electromagnetic fields.

High-pressure magnetization and NMR studies on $α$-RuCl$_3$

We report high-pressure magnetization and $^{35}$Cl NMR studies on $α$-RuCl$_3$ with pressure up to 1.5~GPa. At low pressures, the magnetic ordering is identified by both the magnetization data and the NMR data, where the $T_N$ shows a concave shape dependence with pressure. These data suggest stacking rearrangement along the $c$-axis. With increasing pressure, phase separation appears prominently at $P\ge$~0.45~GPa, and the magnetic volume fraction is completely suppressed at $P\ge$~1.05~GPa. Meanwhile, a phase-transition-like behavior emerges at high pressures in the remaining volume by a sharp drop of magnetization $M(T)$ upon cooling, with the transition temperature $T_x$ increased to ~250~K at 1~GPa. The $1/^{35}T_1$ is reduced by over three orders of magnitude when cooled below 100~K. This characterizes a high-pressure, low-temperature phase with nearly absent static susceptibility and low-energy spin fluctuations. The nature of the high-pressure ground state is discussed, where a magnetically disordered state is proposed as a candidate state.

Sobolev spaces adapted to the Schrödinger operator with inverse-square potential

We study the $L^p$-theory for the Schrödinger operator $\mathcal L_a$ with inverse-square potential $a|x|^{-2}$. Our main result describes when $L^p$-based Sobolev spaces defined in terms of the operator $(\mathcal L_a)^{s/2}$ agree with those defined via $(-Δ)^{s/2}$. We consider all regularities $0<s<2$. In order to make the paper self-contained, we also review (with proofs) multiplier theorems, Littlewood-Paley theory, and Hardy-type inequalities associated to the operator $\mathcal L_a$.

The energy-critical NLS with inverse-square potential

We consider the defocusing energy-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation with inverse-square potential $iu_t = -Δu + a|x|^{-2}u + |u|^4u$ in three space dimensions. We prove global well-posedness and scattering for $a>-\frac14 +\frac1{25}$. We also carry out the variational analysis needed to treat the focusing case.

An integrated low phase noise radiation-pressure-driven optomechanical oscillator chipset

High-quality frequency references are the cornerstones in position, navigation and timing applications of both scientific and commercial domains. Optomechanical oscillators, with direct coupling to continuous-wave light and non-material-limited f Q product, are long regarded as a potential platform for frequency reference in radio-frequency-photonic architectures. However, one major challenge is the compatibility with standard CMOS fabrication processes while maintaining optomechanical high quality performance. Here we demonstrate the monolithic integration of photonic crystal optomechanical oscillators and on-chip high speed Ge detectors based on the silicon CMOS platform. With the generation of both high harmonics (up to 59th order) and subharmonics (down to 1/4), our chipset provides multiple frequency tones for applications in both frequency multipliers and dividers. The phase noise is measured down to -125 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset at ~ 400 μW dropped-in powers, one of the lowest noise optomechanical oscillators to date and in room-temperature and atmospheric non-vacuum operating conditions. These characteristics enable optomechanical oscillators as a frequency reference platform for radio-frequency-photonic information processing.

Type II Perfect Absorption and Amplification Modes with Controllable Bandwidth in PT-Symmetric/Traditional Bragg Grating Combined Structures

We reveal previously unnoticed Type II perfect absorption and amplification modes of optical scattering system. These modes, in contrast to the counterparts in recent works [Phys. Rev. A 82, 031801 (2010); Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 093902 (2011).] which could be referred as Type I modes, appear at a continuous region along the real frequency axis with any frequency. The Type II modes can be demonstrated in the PT-symmetric/traditional Bragg grating combined structures. A series of exotic nonreciprocal absorption and amplification behaviours are observed in the combined structures, making them have potential for versatile devices acting simultaneously as a perfect absorber, an amplifier, and an ultra-narrowband filter. Based on the properties of Type II modes, we also propose structures with controllable perfect absorption and amplification bandwidth at any single or multiple wavelengths.

Suppression of the near-infrared OH night sky lines with fibre Bragg gratings - first results

The background noise between 1 and 1.8 microns in ground-based instruments is dominated by atmospheric emission from hydroxyl molecules. We have built and commissioned a new instrument, GNOSIS, which suppresses 103 OH doublets between 1.47 - 1.7 microns by a factor of ~1000 with a resolving power of ~10,000. We present the first results from the commissioning of GNOSIS using the IRIS2 spectrograph at the AAT. The combined throughput of the GNOSIS fore-optics, grating unit and relay optics is ~36 per cent, but this could be improved to ~46 per cent with a more optimal design. We measure strong suppression of the OH lines, confirming that OH suppression with fibre Bragg gratings will be a powerful technology for low resolution spectroscopy. The integrated OH suppressed background between 1.5 and 1.7 microns is reduced by a factor of 9 compared to a control spectrum using the same system without suppression. The potential of low resolution OH suppressed spectroscopy is illustrated with example observations. The GNOSIS background is dominated by detector dark current below 1.67 microns and by thermal emission above 1.67 microns. After subtracting these we detect an unidentified residual interline component of ~ 860 +/ 210 ph/s/m^2/micron/arcsec^2. This component is equally bright in the suppressed and control spectra. We have investigated the possible source of the interline component, but were unable to discriminate between a possible instrumental artifact and intrinsic atmospheric emission. Resolving the source of this emission is crucial for the design of fully optimised OH suppression spectrographs. The next generation OH suppression spectrograph will be focussed on resolving the source of the interline component, taking advantage of better optimisation for a FBG feed. We quantify the necessary improvements for an optimal OH suppressing fibre spectrograph design.
