Dependence of spin dephasing on initial spin polarization in a high-mobility two-dimensional electron system

We have studied the spin dynamics of a high-mobility two-dimensional electron system in a GaAs/Al_{0.3}Ga_{0.7}As single quantum well by time-resolved Faraday rotation and time-resolved Kerr rotation in dependence on the initial degree of spin polarization, P, of the electrons. By increasing the initial spin polarization from the low-P regime to a significant P of several percent, we find that the spin dephasing time, $T_2^\ast$, increases from about 20 ps to 200 ps; Moreover, $T_2^\ast$ increases with temperature at small spin polarization but decreases with temperature at large spin polarization. All these features are in good agreement with theoretical predictions by Weng and Wu [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 68}, 075312 (2003)]. Measurements as a function of spin polarization at fixed electron density are performed to further confirm the theory. A fully microscopic calculation is performed by setting up and numerically solving the kinetic spin Bloch equations, including the D'yakonov-Perel' and the Bir-Aronov-Pikus mechanisms, with {\em all} the scattering explicitly included. We reproduce all principal features of the experiments, i.e., a dramatic decrease of spin dephasing with increasing $P$ and the temperature dependences at different spin polarizations.

Effect of initial spin polarization on spin dephasing and electron g factor in a high-mobility two-dimensional electron system

We have investigated the spin dynamics of a high-mobility two-dimensional electron system (2DES) in a GaAs--Al$_{0.3}$Ga$_{0.7}$As single quantum well by time-resolved Faraday rotation (TRFR) in dependence on the initial degree of spin polarization, $P$, of the 2DES. From $P\sim 0$ to $P\sim 30$ %, we observe an increase of the spin dephasing time, $T_2^\ast$, by an order of magnitude, from about 20 ps to 200 ps, in good agreement with theoretical predictions by Weng and Wu [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 68}, 075312 (2003)]. Furthermore, by applying an external magnetic field in the Voigt configuration, also the electron $g$ factor is found to decrease for increasing $P$. Fully microscopic calculations, by numerically solving the kinetic spin Bloch equations considering the D'yakonov-Perel' and the Bir-Aronov-Pikus mechanisms, reproduce the most salient features of the experiments, {\em i.e}., a dramatic decrease of spin dephasing and a moderate decrease of the electron $g$ factor with increasing $P$. We show that both results are determined dominantly by the Hartree-Fock contribution of the Coulomb interaction.

Spin relaxation in $n$-type GaAs quantum wells from a full microscopic approach

We perform a full microscopic investigation on the spin relaxation in $n$-type (001) GaAs quantum wells with Al$_{0.4}$Ga$_{0.6}$As barrier due to the D'yakonov-perel' mechanism from nearly 20 K to the room temperature by constructing and numerically solving the kinetic spin Bloch equations. We consider all the relevant scattering such as the electron--acoustic-phonon, the electron--longitudinal-optical-phonon, the electron--nonmagnetic-impurity and the electron-electron Coulomb scattering to the spin relaxation. The spin relaxation times calculated from our theory with a fitting spin splitting parameter are in good agreement with the experimental data by Ohno {\em et al.} [Physica E {\bf 6}, 817 (2000)] over the whole temperature regime (from 20 K to 300 K). The value of the fitted spin splitting parameter agrees with many experiments and theoretical calculations. We further show the temperature dependence of the spin relaxation time under various conditions such as electron density, impurity density and well width. We predict a peak solely due to the Coulomb scattering in the spin relaxation time at low temperature ($<50$ K) in samples with low electron density ({\em e.g.}, density less than $1 \times 10^{11}$ cm$^{-2}$) but high mobility. This peak disappears in samples with high electron density ({\em e.g.} $2 \times 10^{11}$ cm$^{-2}$) and/or low mobility. The hot-electron spin kinetics at low temperature is also addressed with many features quite different from the high temperature case predicted.

Optical study of MgTi$_2$O$_4$: Evidence for an orbital-Peierls state

Dimension reduction due to the orbital ordering has recently been proposed to explain the exotic charge, magnetic and structural transitions in some three-dimensional (3D) transitional metal oxides. We present optical measurement on a spinel compound MgTi$_2$O$_4$ which undergoes a sharp metal-insulator transition at 240 K, and show that the spectral change across the transition can be well understood from the proposed picture of 1D Peierls transition driven by the ordering of $d_{yz}$ and $d_{zx}$ orbitals. We further elaborate that the orbital-driven instability picture applies also very well to the optical data of another spinel CuIr$_2$S$_4$ reported earlier.

Solving Solar Neutrino Puzzle via LMA MSW Conversion

We analyze the existing solar neutrino experiment data and show the allowed regions. The result from SNO's salt phase itself restricts quite a lot the allowed region's area. Reactor neutrinos play an important role in determining oscillation parameters. KamLAND gives decisive conclusion on the solution to the solar neutrino puzzle, in particular, the spectral distortion in the 766.3 Ty KamLAND data gives another new improvement in the constraint of solar MSW-LMA solutions. We confirm that at 99.73% C.L. the high-LMA solution is excluded.

Spin-dependent hole quantum transport in Aharonov-Bohm ring structure: possible schemes for spin filter

We study the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effect in two-dimensional mesoscopic frame in hole systems. We show that differing from the AB effect in electron systems, due to the presence of both the heavy hole and the light hole, the conductances not only show the normal spin-unresolved AB oscillations, but also become spin-separated. Some schemes for spin filter based on the abundant interference characteristics are proposed.

Spin-Hall effect in two-dimensional mesoscopic hole systems

The spin Hall effect in two dimensional hole systems is studied by using the four-terminal Landauer-Büttiker formula with the help of Green functions. The spin Hall effect exists even when there are {\em not} any correlations between the spin-up and -down heavy holes (light holes) and when the $Γ$-point degeneracy of the heavy hole and light hole bands is lifted by the confinement or recovered by the strain. When only a heavy hole charge current without any spin polarization is injected through one lead, under right choice of lead voltages, one can get a pure heavy (light) hole spin current, combined with a possible impure light (heavy) hole spin current from another two leads. The spin Hall coefficients of both heavy and light holes depend on the Fermi energy, devise size and the disorder strength. It is also shown that the spin Hall effect of two dimensional hole systems is much more robust than that of electron systems with the Rashba spin-orbit coupling and the spin Hall coefficients do not decrease with the system size but tend to some nonzero values when the disorder strength is smaller than some critical value.

Cut-wire pairs and plate pairs as magnetic atoms for optical metamaterials

We study the optical properties of metamaterials made from cut-wire pairs or plate pairs. We obtain a more pronounced optical response for arrays of plate pairs -- a geometry which also eliminates the undesired polarization anisotropy of the cut-wire pairs. The measured optical spectra agree with simulations, revealing negative magnetic permeability in the range of telecommunications wavelengths. Thus, nanoscopic plate pairs might serve as an alternative to the established split-ring resonator design.

Spin filtering through a double-bend structure

We propose a simple scheme for the spin filter by studying the coherent transport of electrons through a double-bend structure in a quantum wire with a weak lateral magnetic potential which is much weaker than the Fermi energy of the leads. {\em Extremely large} spin polarized current in the order of {\em micro-Ampere} can be obtained because of the strong resonant behavior from the double bends. Further study suggests the roubustness of this spin filter.

Measurement of Change of 7Be Decay Rate in Be and Au

We have measured the possible change of the decay rate of 7Be implanted into hosts of natural beryllium and natural gold. No difference between the 7Be decay rates in the two hosts is observed within the experimental precision of 0.12%. This result implies that change of the decay rate of 7Be implanted in different materials cannot be simply expected from the electron affinity difference consideration lonely and the lattice structure of the host materials should be taken into account.
