Triplet superconductivity in a 1D itinerant electron system with transverse spin anisotropy

In this paper we study the ground state phase diagram of a one-dimensional t-J-U model away from half-filling. In the large-bandwidth limit and for ferromagnetic exchange with easy-plane anisotropy a phase with gapless charge and massive spin excitations, characterized by the coexistence of triplet superconducting and spin density wave instabilities is realized in the ground state. With increasing ferromagnetic exchange transitions into a ferrometallic and then a spin gapped triplet superconducting phase take place.

Spin-flip Effects in the Mesoscopic Spin-Interferometer

We investigate the properties of the electron spin-transmission through an Aharonov-Bohm interferometer with an embedded multilevel quantum dot containing magnetic impurities. A suitable formalism is developed. The amplitude and the phase of the flip- and nonflip-transmittance are calculated numerically as function of the magnetic field and the gate potential applied on the dot. The effects induced by the exchange interaction to spin-dependent magnetoconductance fluctuations and transmittance phase are shown.

Triplet superconductivity vs. easy-plane ferromagnetism in a 1D itinerant electron system with transverse spin anisotropy

In this paper we study the ground state phase diagram of a one-dimensional $t-U-J$ model, at half-filling. In the large-bandwidth limit and for ferromagnetic exchange with easy-plane anisotropy, a phase with gapless charge and massive spin excitations, characterized by the coexistence of triplet superconducting and spin density wave instabilities is realized in the ground state. With reduction of the bandwidth, a transition into an insulating phase showing properties of the spin-1/2 XY model takes place.

Excitations of anisotropic spin-1 chains with matrix product ground state

We investigate a large class of antiferromagnetic spin-1 chains with nearest neighbour interaction and exactly known matrix product ground state. The spectrum of low-lying excitations is calculated numerically by DMRG and exact diagonalisation. Spin liquid behaviour with an excitation gap is observed meeting the Haldane scenario. Further, we compare properties of the anisotropic model with the well-known isotropic AKLT model and use the analytical single mode approximation to obtain a quantitative understanding of the excitation gap. The low-lying excited states can be interpreted in terms of a magnon-like elementary excitation.

Stochastic Light-Cone CTMRG: a new DMRG approach to stochastic models

We develop a new variant of the recently introduced stochastic transfer-matrix DMRG which we call stochastic light-cone corner-transfer-matrix DMRG (LCTMRG). It is a numerical method to compute dynamic properties of one-dimensional stochastic processes. As suggested by its name, the LCTMRG is a modification of the corner-transfer-matrix DMRG (CTMRG), adjusted by an additional causality argument. As an example, two reaction-diffusion models, the diffusion-annihilation process and the branch-fusion process, are studied and compared to exact data and Monte-Carlo simulations to estimate the capability and accuracy of the new method. The number of possible Trotter steps of more than 10^5 shows a considerable improvement to the old stochastic TMRG algorithm.

Exact ground states of spin-2 chains

We use the matrix product approach to construct all optimum ground states of general anisotropic spin-2 chains with nearest neighbour interactions and common symmetries. These states are exact ground states of the model and their properties depend on up to three parameters. We find three different antiferromagnetic Haldane phases, one weak antiferromagnetic and one weak ferromagnetic phase. The antiferromagnetic phases can be described as spin liquids with exponentially decaying correlation functions. The variety of phases found with the matrix product ansatz also gives insight into the behaviour of spin chains with arbitrary higher spins.

Simulation of pedestrian dynamics using a 2-dimensional cellular automaton

We propose a 2-dimensional cellular automaton model to simulate pedestrian traffic. It is a vmax=1 model with exclusion statistics and parallel dynamics. Long-range interactions between the pedestrians are mediated by a so called floor field which modifies the transition rates to neighbouring cells. This field, which can be discrete or continuous, is subject to diffusion and decay. Furthermore it can be modified by the motion of the pedestrians. Therefore the model uses an idea similar to chemotaxis, but with pedestrians following a virtual rather than a chemical trace. Our main goal is to show that the introduction of such a floor field is sufficient to model collective effects and self-organization encountered in pedestrian dynamics, e.g. lane formation in counterflow through a large corridor. As an application we also present simulations of the evacuation of a large room with reduced visibility, e.g. due to failure of lights or smoke.

Transfer-matrix DMRG for stochastic models: The Domany-Kinzel cellular automaton

We apply the transfer-matrix DMRG (TMRG) to a stochastic model, the Domany-Kinzel cellular automaton, which exhibits a non-equilibrium phase transition in the directed percolation universality class. Estimates for the stochastic time evolution, phase boundaries and critical exponents can be obtained with high precision. This is possible using only modest numerical effort since the thermodynamic limit can be taken analytically in our approach. We also point out further advantages of the TMRG over other numerical approaches, such as classical DMRG or Monte-Carlo simulations.

Effect of on- and off-ramps in cellular automata models for traffic flow

We present results on the modeling of on- and off-ramps in cellular automata for traffic flow, especially the Nagel-Schreckenberg model. We study two different types of on-ramps that cause qualitatively the same effects. In a certain density regime one observes plateau formation in the fundamental diagram. The plateau value depends on the input-rate of cars at the on-ramp. The on-ramp acts as a local perturbation that separates the system into two regimes: A regime of free flow and another one where only jammed states exist. This phase separation is the reason for the plateau formation and implies a behaviour analogous to that of stationary defects. This analogy allows to perform very fast simulations of complex traffic networks with a large number of on- and off-ramps because one can parametrise on-ramps in an exceedingly easy way.

A new cellular automata model for city traffic

We present a new cellular automata model of vehicular traffic in cities by combining ideas borrowed from the Biham-Middleton-Levine (BML) model of city traffic and the Nagel-Schreckenberg (NaSch) model of highway traffic. The model exhibits a dynamical phase transition to a completely jammed phase at a critical density which depends on the time periods of the synchronized signals.

Exact trimer ground states on a spin-1 chain

We construct a new spin-1 model on a chain. Its ground state is determined exactly which is three-fold degenerate by breaking translational invariance. Thus we have trimerization. Excited states cannot be obtained exactly, but we determine a few low-lying ones by using trial states, among them solitons.

Optimum ground states of generalized Hubbard models with next-nearest neighbour interaction

We investigate the stability domains of ground states of generalized Hubbard models with next-nearest neighbour interaction using the optimum groundstate approach. We focus on the $η$-pairing state with momentum P=0 and the fully polarized ferromagnetic state at half-filling. For these states exact lower bounds for the regions of stability are obtained in the form of inequalities between the interaction parameters. For the model with only nearest neighbour interaction we show that the bounds for the stability regions can be improved by considering larger clusters. Additional next-nearest neighbour interactions can lead to larger or smaller stability regions depending on the parameter values.

Optimum ground states for spin-3/2 ladders with two legs

We construct the exact ground state for an antiferromagnetic spin-3/2 model on the two-leg ladder as an optimum ground state. The ground state contains a discrete parameter "sigma"=+/-1 and a continuous parameter "a" which controls z-axis anisotropy. For most values of "a" the global ground state is unique. It has vanishing sublattice magnetization and exponentially decaying correlation functions. By using the transfer matrix technique, we calculate exactly the fluctuations of the magnetization, the nearest-neighbour correlation, and the longitudinal correlation length as functions of the parameters.

Spin-3/2 models on the Cayley tree -- optimum ground state approach

We present a class of optimum ground states for spin-3/2 models on the Cayley tree with coordination number 3. The interaction is restricted to nearest neighbours and contains 5 continuous parameters. For all values of these parameters the Hamiltonian has parity invariance, spin-flip invariance, and rotational symmetry in the xy-plane of spin space. The global ground states are constructed in terms of a 1-parametric vertex state model, which is a direct generalization of the well-known matrix product ground state approach. By using recursion relations and the transfer matrix technique we derive exact analytical expressions for local fluctuations and longitudinal and transversal two-point correlation functions.

Mixed Heisenberg Chains. II. Thermodynamics

We consider thermodynamic properties, e.g. specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, of alternating Heisenberg spin chains. Due to a hidden Ising symmetry these chains can be decomposed into a set of finite chain fragments. The problem of finding the thermodynamic quantities is effectively separated into two parts. First we deal with finite objects, secondly we can incorporate the fragments into a statistical ensemble. As functions of the coupling constants, the models exhibit special features in the thermodynamic quantities, e.g. the specific heat displays double peaks at low enough temperatures. These features stem from first order quantum phase transitions at zero temperature, which have been investigated in the first part of this work.

Mixed Heisenberg Chains. I. The Ground State Problem

We consider a mechanism for competing interactions in alternating Heisenberg spin chains due to the formation of local spin-singlet pairs. The competition of spin-1 and spin-0 states reveals hidden Ising symmetry of such alternating chains.

Quantum phase transition in spin-3/2 systems on the hexagonal lattice - optimum ground state approach

Optimum ground states are constructed in two dimensions by using so called vertex state models. These models are graphical generalizations of the well-known matrix product ground states for spin chains. On the hexagonal lattice we obtain a one-parametric set of ground states for a five-dimensional manifold of S=3/2 Hamiltonians. Correlation functions within these ground states are calculated using Monte-Carlo simulations. In contrast to the one-dimensional situation, these states exhibit a parameter-induced second order phase transition. In the disordered phase, two-spin correlations decay exponentially, but in the Neel ordered phase alternating long-range correlations are dominant. We also show that ground state properties can be obtained from the exact solution of a corresponding free-fermion model for most values of the parameter.
