Variability and dust filtration in the transition disk J160421.7-213028 observed in optical scattered light

Context. Some of transition disks show asymmetric structures in thermal sub-millimetre emission and optical scattered light. These structures can be the result of planet(s) or companions embedded in the disk. Aims. We aim to detect and analyse the scattered light of the transition disk J160421.7-213028, identify disk structures, and compare the results with previous observations of this disk at other wavelengths. Methods. We obtained and analysed new polarised intensity observations of the transition disk J160421.7-213028 with VLT/SPHERE using the visible light instrument ZIMPOL at $R'$ band (0.626$μ$m). We probe the disk gap down to a radius of confidence of 0.1'' (${\sim}15$ AU at 145 pc). We interpret the results in the context of dust evolution when planets interact with the parental disk. Results. We observe a gap from 0.1 to 0.3'' (${\sim}15$ to 40AU) and a bright annulus as previously detected by HiCIAO $H$ band observations at $1.65μ$m. The radial width of the annulus is around $40$AU, and its centre is at ${\sim}61$AU from the central star. The peak of the reflected light at 0.626$μ$m is located 20 AU inward of the cavity detected in the submillimetre. In addition, we detect a dip at a position angle of ${\sim}46.2 \pm 5.4^\circ$. A dip was also detected with HiCIAO, but located at ${\sim}85^\circ$. If the dip observed with HiCIAO is the same, this suggests an average dip rotation of ${\sim}12^\circ/$year, which is inconsistent with the local Keplerian angular velocity of $\sim$0.8$^\circ$/yr at $\sim$61AU. Conclusions. The spatial discrepancy in the radial emission in J160421.7-213028 at different wavelengths is consistent with dust filtration at the outer edge of a gap carved by a massive planet. The dip rotation can be interpreted by fast variability of the inner disk and/or the presence of a warp or circumplanetary material of a planet at ${\sim}9.6$ AU.

Non-azimuthal linear polarization in protoplanetary disks

Several studies discussing imaging polarimetry observations of protoplanetary disks use the so-called radial Stokes parameters Q_phi and U_phi to discuss the results. This approach has the advantage of providing a direct measure of the noise in the polarized images under the assumption that the polarization is azimuthal only, i.e., perpendicular to the direction towards the illuminating source. However, a detailed study of the validity of this assumption is currently missing. We aim to test whether departures from azimuthal polarization can naturally be produced by scattering processes in optically thick protoplanetary disks at near infrared wavelengths. We use the radiative transfer code MCFOST to create a generic model of a transition disk using different grain size distributions and dust masses. From these models we generate synthetic polarized images at 2.2\mum. We find that even for moderate inclinations (e.g., i = 40degr), multiple scattering alone can produce significant (up to ~4.5% of the Q_phi image) non-azimuthal polarization reflected in the U_phi images. We also find that different grain populations can naturally produce radial polarization (negative values in the Q_phi images). Our results suggest that caution is recommended when interpreting polarized images by only analyzing the Q_phi and U_phi images. We find that there can be astrophysical signal in the U_phi images and negative values in the Q_phi images, which indicate departures from azimuthal polarization. If significant signal is detected in the U_phi images, we recommend to check the standard Q and U images to look for departures from azimuthal polarization. On the positive side, signal in the U_phi images once all instrumental and data-reduction artifacts have been corrected for means that there is more information to be extracted regarding the dust population and particle density.

Asymmetric features in the protoplanetary disk MWC758

The study of dynamical processes in protoplanetary disks is essential to understand planet formation. In this context, transition disks are prime targets because they are at an advanced stage of disk clearing and may harbor direct signatures of disk evolution. In this paper, we aim to derive new constraints on the structure of the transition disk MWC 758, to detect non-axisymmetric features and understand their origin. We obtained infrared polarized intensity observations of the protoplanetary disk MWC 758 with SPHERE/VLT at 1.04 microns to resolve scattered light at a smaller inner working angle (0.093") and a higher angular resolution (0.027") than previously achieved. We observe polarized scattered light within 0.53" (148 au) down to the inner working angle (26 au) and detect distinct non-axisymmetric features but no fully depleted cavity. The two small-scale spiral features that were previously detected with HiCIAO are resolved more clearly, and new features are identified, including two that are located at previously inaccessible radii close to the star. We present a model based on the spiral density wave theory with two planetary companions in circular orbits. The best model requires a high disk aspect ratio (H/r~0.20 at the planet locations) to account for the large pitch angles which implies a very warm disk. Our observations reveal the complex morphology of the disk MWC758. To understand the origin of the detected features, the combination of high-resolution observations in the submillimeter with ALMA and detailed modeling is needed.

The inner environment of Z~CMa: High-Contrast Imaging Polarimetry with NaCo

Context. Z\,CMa is a binary composed of an embedded Herbig Be and an FU Ori class star separated by $\sim100$ au. Observational evidence indicate a complex environment in which each star has a circumstellar disk and drives a jet, and the whole system is embedded in a large dusty envelope. Aims. We aim to probe the circumbinary environment of Z\,CMa in the inner 400 au in scattered light. Methods. We use high contrast imaging polarimetry with VLT/NaCo at $H$ and $K_s$ bands. Results. The central binary is resolved in both bands. The polarized images show three bright and complex structures: a common dust envelope, a sharp extended feature previously reported in direct light, and an intriguing bright clump located $0\farcs3$ south of the binary, which appears spatially connected to the sharp extended feature. Conclusions. We detect orbital motion when compared to previous observations, and report a new outburst driven by the Herbig star. Our observations reveal the complex inner environment of Z\,CMa with unprecedented detail and contrast.

Inhomogeneous Thermalization in Strongly Coupled Field Theories

To describe theoretically the creation and evolution of the quark-gluon plasma, one typically employs three ingredients: a model for the initial state, non-hydrodynamic early time evolution, and hydrodynamics. In this paper we study the non-hydrodynamic early time evolution using the AdS/CFT correspondence in the presence of inhomogeneities. We find that the AdS description of the early time evolution is well-matched by free streaming. Near the end of the early time interval where our analytic computations are reliable, the stress tensor agrees with the second order hydrodynamic stress tensor computed from the local energy density and fluid velocity. Our techniques may also be useful for the study of far-from-equilibrium strongly coupled systems in other areas of physics.

Inhomogeneous holographic thermalization

The sudden injection of energy in a strongly coupled conformal field theory and its subsequent thermalization can be holographically modeled by a shell falling into anti-de Sitter space and forming a black brane. For a homogeneous shell, Bhattacharyya and Minwalla were able to study this process analytically using a weak field approximation. Motivated by event-by-event fluctuations in heavy ion collisions, we include inhomogeneities in this model, obtaining analytic results in a long wavelength expansion. In the early-time window in which our approximations can be trusted, the resulting evolution matches well with that of a simple free streaming model. Near the end of this time window, we find that the stress tensor approaches that of second-order viscous hydrodynamics. We comment on possible lessons for heavy ion phenomenology.

Thermalization of Strongly Coupled Field Theories

Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we probe the scale-dependence of thermalization in strongly coupled field theories following a quench via saddlepoint calculations of 2-point functions, Wilson loops and entanglement entropy in $d=2,3,4$. For homogeneous initial conditions, the entanglement entropy thermalizes slowest, and sets a timescale for equilibration that saturates a causality bound. The growth rate of entanglement entropy density is nearly volume-independent for small volumes, but slows for larger volumes. In this strongly coupled setting, the UV thermalizes first.

Non-commutative superspace from string theory

Turning on background fields in string theory sometimes has an alternative interpretation as a deformation of the target space geometry. A particularly well-known case is the NS-NS two form B, which gives rise to space-time non-commutativity. In this note we point out that this phenomenon extends to ten-dimensional superspace when employing a covariant quantization of the superstring, generalizing an observation by Ooguri and Vafa in four dimensions. In particular, we will find that RR field strengths give rise to a non-zero $\{θ,θ\}$ anti-commutator, just as in four dimensions, whereas the gravitino yields a non-zero value for $[x,θ]$.

Gauge theory description of compactified pp-waves

We find a new Penrose limit of AdS_5*S^5 that gives the maximally symmetric pp-wave background of type IIB string theory in a coordinate system that has a manifest space-like isometry. This induces a new pp-wave/gauge-theory duality which on the gauge theory side involves a novel scaling limit of N=4 SYM theory. The new Penrose limit, when applied to AdS_5*S^5/Z_M, yields a pp-wave with a space-like circle. The dual gauge theory description involves a triple scaling limit of an N=2 quiver gauge theory. We present in detail the map between gauge theory operators and string theory states including winding states, and verify agreement between the energy eigenvalues obtained from string theory and those computed in gauge theory, at least to one-loop order in the planar limit. We furthermore consider other related new Penrose limits and explain how these limits can be understood as part of a more general framework.

Permeable conformal walls and holography

We study conformal field theories in two dimensions separated by domain walls, which preserve at least one Virasoro algebra. We develop tools to study such domain walls, extending and clarifying the concept of `folding' discussed in the condensed-matter literature. We analyze the conditions for unbroken supersymmetry, and discuss the holographic duals in AdS3 when they exist. One of the interesting observables is the Casimir energy between a wall and an anti-wall. When these separate free scalar field theories with different target-space radii, the Casimir energy is given by the dilogarithm function of the reflection probability. The walls with holographic duals in AdS3 separate two sigma models, whose target spaces are moduli spaces of Yang-Mills instantons on T4 or K3. In the supergravity limit, the Casimir energy is computable as classical energy of a brane that connects the walls through AdS3. We compare this result with expectations from the sigma-model point of view.

The Operator Algebra and Twisted KZ Equations of WZW Orbifolds

We obtain the operator algebra of each twisted sector of all WZW orbifolds, including the general twisted current algebra and the algebra of the twisted currents with the twisted affine primary fields. Surprisingly, the twisted right and left mover current algebras are not a priori copies of each other. Using the operator algebra we also derive world-sheet differential equations for the twisted affine primary fields of all WZW orbifolds. Finally we include ground state properties to obtain the twisted Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations of the WZW permutation orbifolds and the inner-automorphic WZW orbifolds.

New Duality Transformations in Orbifold Theory

We find new duality transformations which allow us to construct the stress tensors of all the twisted sectors of any orbifold A(H)/H, where A(H) is the set of all current-algebraic conformal field theories with a finite symmetry group H \subset Aut(g). The permutation orbifolds with H = Z_λand H = S_3 are worked out in full as illustrations but the general formalism includes both simple and semisimple g. The motivation for this development is the recently-discovered orbifold Virasoro master equation, whose solutions are identified by the duality transformations as sectors of the permutation orbifolds A(D_λ)/Z_λ.

On the Holographic Renormalization Group

We propose a direct correspondence between the classical evolution equations of 5-d supergravity and the renormalization group (RG) equations of the dual 4-d large $N$ gauge theory. Using standard Hamilton-Jacobi theory, we derive first order flow equations for the classical supergravity action $S$, that take the usual form of the Callan-Symanzik equations, including the corrections due to the conformal anomaly. This result gives direct support for the identification of $S$ with the quantum effective action of the gauge theory. In addition we find interesting new relations between the beta-functions and the counterterms that affect the 4-d cosmological and Newton constant.

Self-Dual Supergravity from N=2 Strings

A new heterotic N=2 string with manifest target space supersymmetry is constructed by combining a conventional N=2 string in the right-moving sector and a Green-Schwarz-Berkovits type string in the left-moving sector. The corresponding sigma model is then obtained by turning on background fields for the massless excitations. We compute the beta functions and we partially check the OPE's of the superconformal algebra perturbatively in $α'$, all in superspace. The resulting field equations describe N=1 self-dual supergravity.

Unification of the General Non-Linear Sigma Model and the Virasoro Master Equation

The Virasoro master equation describes a large set of conformal field theories known as the affine-Virasoro constructions, in the operator algebra (affine Lie algebra) of the WZW model, while the Einstein equations of the general non-linear sigma model describe another large set of conformal field theories. This talk summarizes recent work which unifies these two sets of conformal field theories, together with a presumable large class of new conformal field theories. The basic idea is to consider spin-two operators of the form $L_{ij} \partial x^i \partial x^j$ in the background of a general sigma model. The requirement that these operators satisfy the Virasoro algebra leads to a set of equations called the unified Einstein-Virasoro master equation, in which the spin-two spacetime field $L_{ij}$ couples to the usual spacetime fields of the sigma model. The one-loop form of this unified system is presented, and some of its algebraic and geometric properties are discussed.

Unified Einstein-Virasoro Master Equation in the General Non-Linear Sigma Model

The Virasoro master equation (VME) describes the general affine-Virasoro construction $T=L^{ab}J_aJ_b+iD^a \dif J_a$ in the operator algebra of the WZW model, where $L^{ab}$ is the inverse inertia tensor and $D^a $ is the improvement vector. In this paper, we generalize this construction to find the general (one-loop) Virasoro construction in the operator algebra of the general non-linear sigma model. The result is a unified Einstein-Virasoro master equation which couples the spacetime spin-two field $L^{ab}$ to the background fields of the sigma model. For a particular solution $L_G^{ab}$, the unified system reduces to the canonical stress tensors and conventional Einstein equations of the sigma model, and the system reduces to the general affine-Virasoro construction and the VME when the sigma model is taken to be the WZW action. More generally, the unified system describes a space of conformal field theories which is presumably much larger than the sum of the general affine-Virasoro construction and the sigma model with its canonical stress tensors. We also discuss a number of algebraic and geometrical properties of the system, including its relation to an unsolved problem in the theory of $G$-structures on manifolds with torsion.

Linearized Form of the Generic Affine-Virasoro Action

Halpern and Yamron have given a Lorentz, conformal, and Diff S$_2$-invariant world-sheet action for the generic irrational conformal field theory, but the action is highly non-linear. In this paper, we introduce auxiliary fields to find an equivalent linearized form of the action, which shows in a very clear way that the generic affine-Virasoro action is a Diff S$_2$-gauged WZW model. In particular, the auxiliary fields transform under Diff S$_2$ as local Lie $g$ $\times$ Lie $g$ connections, so that the linearized affine-Virasoro action bears an intriguing resemblance to the usual (Lie algebra) gauged WZW model.
