The Zurich Environmental Study (ZENS) of Galaxies in Groups along the Cosmic Web. I. Which Environment Affects Galaxy Evolution?

The Zurich Environmental Study (ZENS) is based on a sample of ~1500 galaxy members of 141 groups in the mass range ~10^12.5-14.5 M_sun within the narrow redshift range 0.05 10^10 M_sun, satellite galaxies in relaxed and unrelaxed groups have similar size, color and (specific) star formation rate distributions; at lower galaxy masses, satellites are marginally redder in relaxed relative to unrelaxed groups, suggesting quenching of star formation in low-mass satellites by physical processes active in relaxed halos. Finally, relaxed and unrelated groups show similar stellar mass conversion efficiencies, peaking at halo masses around 10^12.5 M_sun. In the enclosed ZENS catalogue we publish all environmental diagnostics as well as the galaxy structural and photometric measurements described in companion ZENS papers II and III.

The characteristic polarized radio continuum distribution of cluster spiral galaxies

Deep observations of 6cm polarized radio continuum emission of 8 Virgo spiral galaxies are presented. All galaxies show strongly asymmetric distributions of polarized intensity with elongated ridges located in the outer galactic disk. Such features are not found in existing observations of polarized radio continuum emission of field spiral galaxies, where the distribution of 6cm polarized intensity is generally relatively symmetric and strongest in the interarm regions. We therefore conclude that most Virgo spiral galaxies and most probably the majority of cluster spiral galaxies show asymmetric distributions of polarized radio continuum emission due to their interaction with the cluster environment. The polarized continuum emission is sensitive to compression and shear motions in the plane of the sky and thus contains important information about velocity distortions caused by these interactions.

HI and Hot Gas in the Outskirts of the M81 Group

Results are presented from a wide area, high resolution HI synthesis survey of the outer regions of the nearby M81 group, where internal (galactic) and external (group-related) evolution processes can be studied simultaneously in great detail. The survey encompasses the star forming dwarf galaxies M81dwA, UGC4483, and HoII, where evidence of ram pressure stripping was recently discovered. The data do not reveal any intergalactic HI, but the outer parts of HoII are reminiscent of tidal tails. We argue however that those structures are equally consistent with the latest ram pressure models including cooling. The case for a hot intergalactic medium in this poor, spiral-only group is thus still open. The survey also puts tight constraints on possible counterparts to the local high velocity cloud population in an external group, reaching a 3 sigma column density of 10^19 atom/cm^2 and a 6 sigma limiting mass of 1.5x10^5 M_sun.

The Properties of an HI-Selected Galaxy Sample

We analyze the properties of a sample of galaxies identified in a 21-cm, HI-line survey of selected areas in the Perseus-Pisces supercluster and its foreground void. Twelve fields were observed in the supercluster, five of them (target fields) centered on optically bright galaxies, and the other seven (blank fields) selected to contain no bright galaxies. We detected nine previously uncataloged, gas-rich galaxies, six of them in the target fields. We also detected HI from seven previously cataloged galaxies in these fields. Observations in the void covered the same volume as the twelve supercluster fields at the same HI-mass sensitivity, but no objects were detected. Combining our HI data with optical broad-band and H-alpha imaging, we conclude that the properties of HI-selected galaxies do not differ substantially from those of late-type galaxies found in optical surveys. In particular, the galaxies in our sample do not appear to be unusually faint for their HI mass, or for their circular velocity. The previously cataloged, optically bright galaxies in our survey volume dominate the total HI mass density and cross-section; the uncataloged galaxies contribute only 19% of the mass and 12% of the cross-section. Thus, existing estimates of the density and cross-section of neutral hydrogen, most of which are based on optically-selected galaxy samples, are probably accurate.
