Exploiting environmental resonances to enhance qubit quality factors

We discuss dephasing times for a two-level system (including bias) coupled to a damped harmonic oscillator. This system is realized in measurements on solid-state Josephson qubits. It can be mapped to a spin-boson model with a spectral function with an approximately Lorentzian resonance. We diagonalize the model by means of infinitesimal unitary transformations (flow equations), and calculate correlation functions, dephasing rates, and qubit quality factors. We find that these depend strongly on the environmental resonance frequency $Ω$; in particular, quality factors can be enhanced significantly by tuning $Ω$ to lie below the qubit frequency $Δ$.

SU(4) Fermi Liquid State and Spin Filtering in a Double Quantum Dot System

We study a symmetrical double quantum dot (DD) system with strong capacitive inter-dot coupling using renormalization group methods. The dots are attached to separate leads, and there can be a weak tunneling between them. In the regime where there is a single electron on the DD the low-energy behavior is characterized by an SU(4)-symmetric Fermi liquid theory with entangled spin and charge Kondo correlations and a phase shift $π/4$. Application of an external magnetic field gives rise to a large magneto-conductance and a crossover to a purely charge Kondo state in the charge sector with SU(2) symmetry. In a four lead setup we find perfectly spin polarized transmission.

Dissipative spin-boson model and Kondo effect in low dimensional quantum gases

We show that ultracold atoms confined in a quasi-1d trap can be used to study the dissipative spin-boson model with {\it tunable} tunneling splitting and strength of dissipation. It is shown that with realistic parameters this system allows to study the crossover from coherent Rabi dynamics to incoherent tunneling.

Two pairing parameters in superconducting grains

Unlike bulk superconductivity, where one energy scale, the energy gap, characterizes pairing correlations, we show that in small superconducting grains there exist two different such quantities. The first characterizes cumulative properties of the grain, such as the condensation energy, and the second single-particle properties. To describe these two energy scales, we define two corresponding pairing parameters, and show that although both reduce to the bulk gap for large grains, this occurs at different size scales.

Magnetic Anisotropy Variations and Non-Equilibrium Tunneling in a Cobalt Nanoparticle

We present detailed measurements of the discrete electron-tunneling level spectrum within nanometer-scale cobalt particles as a function of magnetic field and gate voltage, in this way probing individual quantum many-body eigenstates inside ferromagnetic samples. Variations among the observed levels indicate that different quantum states within one particle are subject to different magnetic anisotropy energies. Gate-voltage studies demonstrate that the low-energy tunneling spectrum is affected dramatically by the presence of non-equilibrium spin excitations.

Thermodynamic properties of a small superconducting grain

The reduced BCS Hamiltonian for a metallic grain with a finite number of electrons is considered. The crossover between the ultrasmall regime, in which the level spacing, $d$, is larger than the bulk superconducting gap, $Δ$, and the small regime, where $Δ\gtrsim d$, is investigated analytically and numerically. The condensation energy, spin magnetization and tunneling peak spectrum are calculated analytically in the ultrasmall regime, using an approximation controlled by $1/\ln N$ as small parameter, where $N$ is the number of interacting electron pairs. The condensation energy in this regime is perturbative in the coupling constant $λ$, and is proportional to $d N λ^2 = λ^2 ω_D$. We find that also in a large regime with $Δ>d$, in which pairing correlations are already rather well developed, the perturbative part of the condensation energy is larger than the singular, BCS, part. The condition for the condensation energy to be well approximated by the BCS result is found to be roughly $Δ> \sqrt{d ω_D}$. We show how the condensation energy can, in principle, be extracted from a measurement of the spin magnetization curve, and find a re-entrant susceptibility at zero temperature as a function of magnetic field, which can serve as a sensitive probe for the existence of superconducting correlations in ultrasmall grains. Numerical results are presented which suggest that in the large $N$ limit the 1/N correction to the BCS result for the condensation energy is larger than $Δ$.
