Dynamics of ferromagnetic domain walls under extreme fields

We report the existence of a new regime for domain wall motion in uniaxial and near-uniaxial ferromagnetic nanowires, characterised by applied magnetic fields sufficiently strong that one of the domains becomes unstable. There appears a new stable solution of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation, describing a nonplanar domain wall moving with constant velocity and precessing with constant frequency. Even in the presence of thermal noise, the new solution can propagate for distances on the order of 500 times the field-free domain wall width before fluctuations in the unstable domain become appreciable.

Topology of time-reversal invariant energy bands with adiabatic structure

We classify the topology of bands defined by the energy states of quantum systems with scale separation between slow and fast degrees of freedom, invariant under fermionic time reversal. Classical phase space transforms differently from momentum space under time reversal, and as a consequence the topology of adiabatic bands is different from that of Bloch bands. We show that bands defined over a two-dimensional phase space are classified by the Chern number, whose parity must be equal to the parity of the band rank. Even-rank bands are equivalently classified by the Kane-Mele index, an integer equal to one half the Chern number.

Half-integer point defects in the $Q$-tensor theory of nematic liquid crystals

We investigate prototypical profiles of point defects in two dimensional liquid crystals within the framework of Landau-de Gennes theory. Using boundary conditions characteristic of defects of index $k/2$, we find a critical point of the Landau-de Gennes energy that is characterised by a system of ordinary differential equations. In the deep nematic regime, $b^2$ small, we prove that this critical point is the unique global minimiser of the Landau-de Gennes energy. We investigate in greater detail the regime of vanishing elastic constant $L \to 0$, where we obtain three explicit point defect profiles, including the global minimiser.

Domain wall motion in ferromagnetic nanotubes: Analytic results

Dynamics of magnetization domain walls (DWs) in thin ferromagnetic nanotubes subject to longitudinal external fields is addressed analytically in the regimes of strong and weak penalization. Explicit functional forms of the DW profiles and formulas for the DW propagation velocity are derived in both regimes. In particular, the DW speed is shown to depend nonlinearly on the nanotube radius.

Domain wall motion in magnetic nanowires: An asymptotic approach

We develop a systematic asymptotic description for domain wall motion in one-dimensional magnetic nanowires under the influence of small applied magnetic fields and currents and small material anisotropy. The magnetization dynamics, as governed by the Landau--Lifshitz--Gilbert equation, is investigated via a perturbation expansion. We compute leading-order behaviour, propagation velocities, and first-order corrections of both travelling waves and oscillatory solutions, and find bifurcations between these two types of solutions. This treatment provides a sound mathematical foundation for numerous results in the literature obtained through more ad hoc arguments.

Stability of precessing domain walls in ferromagnetic nanowires

We show that recently reported precessing solution of Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equations in ferromagnetic nanowires is stable under small perturbations of initial data, applied field and anisotropy constant. Linear stability is established analytically, while nonlinear stability is verified numerically.

Quantum statistics on graphs

Quantum graphs are commonly used as models of complex quantum systems, for example molecules, networks of wires, and states of condensed matter. We consider quantum statistics for indistinguishable spinless particles on a graph, concentrating on the simplest case of abelian statistics for two particles. In spite of the fact that graphs are locally one-dimensional, anyon statistics emerge in a generalized form. A given graph may support a family of independent anyon phases associated with topologically inequivalent exchange processes. In addition, for sufficiently complex graphs, there appear new discrete-valued phases. Our analysis is simplified by considering combinatorial rather than metric graphs -- equivalently, a many-particle tight-binding model. The results demonstrate that graphs provide an arena in which to study new manifestations of quantum statistics. Possible applications include topological quantum computing, topological insulators, the fractional quantum Hall effect, superconductivity and molecular physics.

Domain wall motion in ferromagnetic nanowires driven by arbitrary time-dependent fields: An exact result

We address the dynamics of magnetic domain walls in ferromagnetic nanowires under the influence of external time-dependent magnetic fields. We report a new exact spatiotemporal solution of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation for the case of soft ferromagnetic wires and nanostructures with uniaxial anisotropy. The solution holds for applied fields with arbitrary strength and time dependence. We further extend this solution to applied fields slowly varying in space and to multiple domain walls.

Liquid crystals and harmonic maps in polyhedral domains

Unit-vector fields $\nvec$ on a convex polyhedron $P$ subject to tangent boundary conditions provide a simple model of nematic liquid crystals in prototype bistable displays. The equilibrium and metastable configurations correspond to minimisers and local minimisers of the Dirichlet energy, and may be regarded as $S^2$-valued harmonic maps on $P$. We consider unit-vector fields which are continuous away from the vertices of $P$. A lower bound for the infimum Dirichlet energy for a given homotopy class is obtained as a sum of minimal connections between fractional defects at the vertices of $P$. In certain cases, this lower bound can be improved by incorporating certain nonabelian homotopy invariants. For a rectangular prism, upper bounds for the infimum Dirichlet energy are obtained from locally conformal solutions of the Euler-Lagrange equations, with the ratio of the upper and lower bounds bounded independently of homotopy type. However, since the homotopy classes are not weakly closed, the infimum may not be realised; the existence and regularity properties of continuous local minimisers of given homotopy type are open questions. Numerical results suggest that some homotopy classes always contain smooth minimisers, while others may or may not depending on the geometry of $P$. Numerical results modelling a bistable device suggest that the observed nematic configurations may be distinguished topologically.

Energies of S^2-valued harmonic maps on polyhedra with tangent boundary conditions

A unit-vector field n:P \to S^2 on a convex polyhedron P \subset R^3 satisfies tangent boundary conditions if, on each face of P, n takes values tangent to that face. Tangent unit-vector fields are necessarily discontinuous at the vertices of P. We consider fields which are continuous elsewhere. We derive a lower bound E^-_P(h) for the infimum Dirichlet energy E^inf_P(h) for such tangent unit-vector fields of arbitrary homotopy type h. E^-_P(h) is expressed as a weighted sum of minimal connections, one for each sector of a natural partition of S^2 induced by P. For P a rectangular prism, we derive an upper bound for E^inf_P(h) whose ratio to the lower bound may be bounded independently of h. The problem is motivated by models of nematic liquid crystals in polyhedral geometries. Our results improve and extend several previous results.

The Maslov index and nondegenerate singularities of integrable systems

We consider integrable Hamiltonian systems in R^{2n} with integrals of motion F = (F_1,...,F_n) in involution. Nondegenerate singularities are critical points of F where rank dF = n-1 and which have definite linear stability. The set of nondegenerate singularities is a codimension-two symplectic submanifold invariant under the flow. We show that the Maslov index of a closed curve is a sum of contributions +/- 2 from the nondegenerate singularities it is encloses, the sign depending on the local orientation and stability at the singularities. For one-freedom systems this corresponds to the well-known formula for the Poincaré index of a closed curve as the oriented difference between the number of elliptic and hyperbolic fixed points enclosed. We also obtain a formula for the Liapunov exponent of invariant (n-1)-dimensional tori in the nondegenerate singular set. Examples include rotationally symmetric n-freedom Hamiltonians, while an application to the periodic Toda chain is described in a companion paper.

Singularities, Lax degeneracies and Maslov indices of the periodic Toda chain

The n-particle periodic Toda chain is a well known example of an integrable but nonseparable Hamiltonian system in R^{2n}. We show that Sigma_k, the k-fold singularities of the Toda chain, ie points where there exist k independent linear relations amongst the gradients of the integrals of motion, coincide with points where there are k (doubly) degenerate eigenvalues of representatives L and Lbar of the two inequivalent classes of Lax matrices (corresponding to degenerate periodic or antiperiodic solutions of the associated second-order difference equation). The singularities are shown to be nondegenerate, so that Sigma_k is a codimension-2k symplectic submanifold. Sigma_k is shown to be of elliptic type, and the frequencies of transverse oscillations under Hamiltonians which fix Sigma_k are computed in terms of spectral data of the Lax matrices. If mu(C) is the (even) Maslov index of a closed curve C in the regular component of R^{2n}, then (-1)^{μ(C)/2} is given by the product of the holonomies (equal to +/- 1) of the even- (or odd-) indexed eigenvector bundles of L and Lmat.

Maslov Indices and Monodromy

We prove that for a Hamiltonian system on a cotangent bundle that is Liouville-integrable and has monodromy the vector of Maslov indices is an eigenvector of the monodromy matrix with eigenvalue 1. As a corollary the resulting restrictions on the monodromy matrix are derived.

Elastic energy of liquid crystals in convex polyhedra

We consider nematic liquid crystals in a bounded, convex polyhedron described by a director field n(r) subject to tangent boundary conditions. We derive lower bounds for the one-constant elastic energy in terms of topological invariants. For a right rectangular prism and a large class of topologies, we derive upper bounds by introducing test configurations constructed from local conformal solutions of the Euler-Lagrange equation. The ratio of the upper and lower bounds depends only on the aspect ratios of the prism. As the aspect ratio is varied, the minimum-energy conformal state undergoes a sharp transition from being smooth to having singularities on the edges.

Classification of unit-vector fields in convex polyhedra with tangent boundary conditions

A unit-vector field n on a convex three-dimensional polyhedron P is tangent if, on the faces of P, n is tangent to the faces. A homotopy classification of tangent unit-vector fields continuous away from the vertices of P is given. The classification is determined by certain invariants, namely edge orientations (values of n on the edges of P), kink numbers (relative winding numbers of n between edges on the faces of P), and wrapping numbers (relative degrees of n on surfaces separating the vertices of P), which are subject to certain sum rules. Another invariant, the trapped area, is expressed in terms of these. One motivation for this study comes from liquid crystal physics; tangent unit-vector fields describe the orientation of liquid crystals in certain polyhedral cells.
