Magnetism on the boron-doped Si(111)-$\sqrt 3 \times \sqrt 3$ surface

We investigate the possible magnetism on the Si(111)-$\sqrt 3 \times \sqrt 3$ surface, which is stabilized for highly boron-doped samples, by using first-principles calculations. When the silicon adatom on top of a boron atom is removed to form a defect structure, three silicon dangling bonds are exposed generating half-filled doubly degenerate energy levels in the band gap which stabilizes a local magnetic moment of 2 $μ_{\rm B}$. When there are many such defect structures adjacent one another, they are found to align antiferromagnetically. However, we demonstrate that the ferromagnetism can be stabilized by adjusting the number of electrons in defects, suggesting a possibility towards spintronic applications of this unique silicon surface structure.

Atomic-scale observation and manipulation of plaquette antiferromagnetic order in iron-based superconductor

The symmetry requirement and the origin of magnetic orders coexisting with superconductivity have been strongly debated issues of iron-based superconductors (FeSCs). Observation of C$_4$-symmetric antiferromagnetism in violation of the inter-band nesting condition of spin-density waves in superconducting ground state will require significant change in our understanding of the mechanism of FeSC. The superconducting material Sr$_2$VO$_3$FeAs, a bulk version of monolayer FeSC in contact with a perovskite layer with its magnetism (T$_N$ ~ 50 K) and superconductivity (T$_c$ ~ 37 K) coexisting at parent state, has no reported structural orthorhombic distortion and thus makes a perfect system to look for theoretically expected C$_4$ magnetisms. Based on variable temperature spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (SPSTM) with newly discovered imaging mechanism that removes the static surface reconstruction (SR) pattern by fluctuating it rapidly with spin-polarized tunneling current, we could visualize underlying C$_4$ symmetric (2$\times$2) magnetic domains and its phase domain walls. We find that this magnetic order is perfectly consistent with the plaquette antiferromagnetic order in tetragonal Fe spin lattice expected from theories based on the Heisenberg exchange interaction of local Fe moments and the quantum order by disorder. The inconsistency of its modulation Q vectors from the nesting condition also implies that the nesting-based C$_2$ symmetric magnetism is not a unique prerequisite of high-T$_c$ FeSC. Furthermore, the plaquette antiferromagnetic domain wall dynamics under the influence of small spin torque effect of spin-polarized tunneling current are shown to be consistent with theoretical simulation based on the extended Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation.

Möbius deconvolution on the hyperbolic plane with application to impedance density estimation

In this paper we consider a novel statistical inverse problem on the Poincaré, or Lobachevsky, upper (complex) half plane. Here the Riemannian structure is hyperbolic and a transitive group action comes from the space of $2\times2$ real matrices of determinant one via Möbius transformations. Our approach is based on a deconvolution technique which relies on the Helgason--Fourier calculus adapted to this hyperbolic space. This gives a minimax nonparametric density estimator of a hyperbolic density that is corrupted by a random Möbius transform. A motivation for this work comes from the reconstruction of impedances of capacitors where the above scenario on the Poincaré plane exactly describes the physical system that is of statistical interest.

Dissipative Hofstadter Model at the Magic Points and Critical Boundary Sine-Gordon Model

The dissipative Hofstadter model describes quantum particles moving in two dimensions subject to a uniform magnetic field, a periodic potential and a dissipative force. We discuss the dissipative Hofstadter model in the framework of the boundary state formulation in string theory and construct exact boundary states for the model at the magic points by using the fermion representation. The dissipative Hofstadter model at magic points is shown to be equivalent to the critical boundary sine-Gordon model.
