Experimental Evaluation of Server Centric Passive Optical Network Based Data Centre Architecture

Passive optical networks (PON) technology has recently been proposed as a solution for scalability, energy efficiency, high capacity, low cost, flexibility and oversubscription issues in data centres. This paper experimentally demonstrates and discusses the implementation of a server centric PON based data centre architecture with high speed and reliability. The architecture is set up using a set of servers grouped into racks directly connected together and to the Optical Line Terminal (OLT) through gateway servers. The switching and routing functionalities have been embedded into servers using 4x10GE Xilinx NetFPGA. Flow continuity has been observed through live video streaming using IP cameras transmitting over up to 110 km optical connections through WDM nodes and the PON network.

TDM/WDM over AWGR Based Passive Optical Network Data Centre Architecture

Passive Optical Data Centre Networks have been developed due to the performance limitations in current data centres to provide high performance within data centre networks. An AWGR based passive optical network data centre architecture is evaluated using a TDM/WDM multiple access technique to provision the flow of traffic among the network efficiently. A Mixed Integer Linear Programming model is developed to optimise resource allocation in the architecture. Using WDM-TDM as a multiple access technique helps in solving issues such as oversubscription and congestion by allowing servers to make simultaneous transmissions of packets in different time slots. The results show that the provisioning / allocation of resource within the architecture is improved with improvements of up to 75% in resource utilisation.

Energy Efficient virtualization framework for 5G F-RAN

Fog radio access network (F-RAN) and virtualisation are promising technologies for 5G networks. In F-RAN, the fog and cloud computing are integrated where the conventional C-RAN functions are diverged to the edge devices of radio access networks. F-RAN is adopted to mitigate the burden of front-haul and improve the end to end (E2E) latency. On other hand, virtualization and network function virtualization (NFV) are IT techniques that aim to convert the functions from hardware to software based functions. Many merits could be brought by the employment of NFV in mobile networks including a high degree of reliability, flexibility and energy efficiency. In this paper, a virtualization framework is introduced for F-RAN to improve the energy efficiency in 5G networks. In this framework, a gigabit passive optical network (GPON) is leveraged as a backbone network for the proposed F-RAN architecture where it connects several evolved nodes B (eNodeBs) via fibre cables. The energy-efficiency of the proposed F-RAN architecture has been investigated and compared with the conventional C-RAN architecture in two different scenarios using mixed integer linear programming (MILP) models. The MILP results indicate that on average a 30% power saving can be achieved by the F-RAN architecture compared with the C-RAN architecture.

Energy Efficient Software Matching in Vehicular Fog

Along with the development of Internet of Things (IoT) and the rise of fog computing, more new joint technologies have been proposed. Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANET) are one of the emergent technologies that come with a very promising role, where the spare processing capabilities of vehicles can be exploited. In this paper, we propose a fog architecture to provide services for end users based on a cluster of static vehicles in a parking lot referred to as a vehicular fog. The proposed vehicular fog architecture is connected to the central data center through an optical infrastructure. As the processing requests from users require specific software packages that may not be available in all vehicles, we study the software matching problem of task assignments in vehicular fog. The goal of this paper is to examine the effect of software packages variety in vehicles on the assignment decision and the overall power consumption. A mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model was utilized to optimize the power consumption of the overall architecture, considering different numbers of software packages in the vehicular fog. The results reveal a power saving of up to 27% when vehicles are uploaded with four or more different software packages out of a library of ten software packages in this example.

Energy Efficient and Resilient Infrastructure for Fog Computing Health Monitoring Applications

In this paper, we propose a resilient energy efficient and fog computing infrastructure for health monitoring applications. We design the infrastructure to be resilient against server failures under two scenarios; without geographical constraints and with geographical constraints. We consider a heart monitoring application where patients send their 30-seconds recording of Electrocardiogram (ECG) signal for processing, analysis and decision making at both primary and backup servers. A Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model is used to optimize the number and locations of the primary and backup processing servers so that the energy consumption of both the processing and networking equipment are minimized. The results show that considering geographical constraints yields a network energy consumption increase by up to 9% compared to without geographical constraint. The results also show that, increasing the number of processing servers that can be served at each candidate node can reduce the energy consumption of networking equipment besides reducing the rate of energy increase of networking equipment due to increasing level of demand.

Disaggregation for Improved Efficiency in Fog Computing Era

This paper evaluates the impact of using disaggregated servers in the near-edge of telecom networks (metro central offices, radio cell sites and enterprise branch office which form part of a Fog as a Service system) to minimize the number of fog nodes required in the far-edge of telecom networks. We formulated a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model to this end. Our results show that replacing traditional servers with disaggregated servers in the near-edge of the telecom network can reduce the number of far-edge fog nodes required by up to 50% if access to near-edge computing resources is not limited by network bottlenecks. This improved efficiency is achieved at the cost of higher average hop count between workload sources and processing locations and marginal increases in overall metro and access networks traffic and power consumption.

Visible Light Optical Data Centre Links

Providing high data rates is one of the big concerns in visible light communication (VLC) systems. This paper introduces a data centre design that use a VLC system for downlink communication. In this work, RYGB laser diodes (LD) are used as transmitters to obtain a high modulation bandwidth. Three types of receivers, wide field of view receiver (WFOVR), 3 branches angle diversity receiver (ADR) and 50 pixels imaging receiver (ImR) are used to examine delay spread and SNR. The proposed system achieved data rates up to 14.2 Gbps using simple on-off-keying (OOK) modulation.

Fog-assisted Caching Employing Solar Renewable Energy for Delivering Video on Demand Service

This paper examines the reduction in brown power consumption of transport networks and data centres achieved by caching Video-on-Demand (VoD) contents in solar-powered fog data centers with Energy Storage Devices (ESDs). A Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model was utilized to optimize the delivery from cloud or fog data centres. The results reveal that for brown-powered cloud and fog data centres with same Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), a saving by up to 77% in transport network power consumption can be achieved by delivering VoD demands from fog data centres. With fully renewable-powered cloud data centres and partially solar-powered fog data centres, savings of up to 26% can be achieved when considering 250 m2 solar cells. Additional saving by up to 14% can be achieved with ESDs of 50 kWh capacity.

Optical Wireless Communication Systems, A Survey

In the past few years, the demand for high data rate services has increased dramatically. The congestion in the radio frequency (RF) spectrum (3 kHz ~ 300 GHz) is expected to limit the growth of future wireless systems unless new parts of the spectrum are opened. Even with the use of advanced engineering, such as signal processing and advanced modulation schemes, it will be very challenging to meet the demands of the users in the next decades using the existing carrier frequencies. On the other hand, there is a potential band of the spectrum available that can provide tens of Gbps to Tbps for users in the near future. Optical wireless communication (OWC) systems are among the promising solutions to the bandwidth limitation problem faced by radio systems. In this paper, we give a tutorial survey of the most significant issues in OWC systems that operate at short ranges such as indoor systems. We consider the challenging issues facing these systems such as (i) link design and system requirements, (ii) transmitter structures, (iii) receiver structures, (iv) challenges and possible techniques to mitigate the impairments in these systems, (v) the main applications and (vi) open research issues. In indoor OWC systems we describe channel modelling, mobility and dispersion mitigation techniques. Infrared communication (IRC) and visible light communication (VLC) are presented as potential implementation approaches for OWC systems and are comprehensively discussed. Moreover, open research issues in OWC systems are discussed.

Greening Big Data Networks: The Impact of Veracity

The continuous increase in big data applications, in number and types, creates new challenges that should be tackled by the green ICT community. Big data is mainly characterized by 4 Vs volume, variety, velocity, and veracity. Each V poses a number of challenges that have implications on the energy efficiency of the underlying networks carrying the big data. Addressing the veracity of the data is a more serious challenge to data scientists, since they need to distinguish between the meaningful data and the dirty data. In this article, we investigate the impact of big data veracity on greening IP by developing a Mixed Integer Linear Programming, MILP, model that encapsulates the distinctive features of veracity. In our analyses, the big data network was greened by cleansing the raw big data before processing and then progressively processing the cleansed big data at strategic locations, dubbed processing nodes, PNs. The PNs are built into the network along the path from the sources to the centralized datacenters. At each PN, the cleansed data was processed and smaller volume of useful information was extracted progressively, thereby, reducing the network power consumption. Furthermore, a backup for the cleansed data was stored in an optimally selected Backup Node, BN. We evaluated the network power saving that can be achieved by a green big data network compared to the classical non-progressive approach. We obtained up to 52 percent network power savings, on average, in the green big data approach compared to the classical approach.

Optimized Energy Aware 5G Network Function Virtualization

In this paper, network function virtualization (NFV) is identified as a promising key technology that can contribute to energy-efficiency improvement in 5G networks. an optical network supported architecture is proposed and investigated in this work to provide the wired infrastructure needed in 5G networks and to support NFV towards an energy efficient 5G networks. In this architecture the mobile core network functions as well as baseband function are virtualized and provided as VMs. the impact of the total number of active users in the network, backhaul/fronthaul configurations and VM inter-traffic are investigated. A mixed integer linear programming (MILP) optimising model is developed with the objective of minimising the total power consumption by optimizing the VMs location and VMs servers' utilisation. The MILP model results show that virtualization can result in up to 38% (average 34) energy saving. The results also reveal how the total number of active users affects the baseband VMs optimal distribution whilst the core network VMs distribution is affected mainly by the inter-traffic between the VMs. For real-time implementation, two heuristics are developed an Energy Efficient NFV without CNVMs inter-traffic (EENFVnoITr) heuristic and an Energy Efficient NFV with CNVMs inter-traffic (EENFVwithITr) heuristic, both produce comparable results to the optimal MILP results

Energy Efficient IoT Virtualization Framework with Peer to Peer Networking and Processing

In this paper, an energy efficient IoT virtualization framework with P2P networking and edge computing is proposed. In this network, the IoT task processing requests are served by peers. The peers in our work are represented by IoT objects and relays that host virtual machines (VMs). We have considered three scenarios to investigate the saving in power consumption and the system capabilities in terms of task processing. The first scenario is the relays only scenario, where the task requests are processed using relays only. The second scenario is the objects only scenario, where the task requests are processed using the IoT objects only. The last scenario is a hybrid scenario, where the task requests are processed using both IoT objects and VMs. We have developed a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model to maximize the number of processing tasks served by the system and minimize the total power consumed by the IoT network. We investigated our framework under the impact of VMs placement constraints, fairness constraints between the objects, tasks number limitations, uplink and downlink limited capacities, and processing capability limitations. Based on the MILP model principles, we developed an energy efficient virtualized IoT P2P networks heuristic (EEVIPN). The heuristic results were comparable to those of the MILP in terms of energy efficiency and tasks processing. Our results show that the hybrid scenario serves up to 77% (57% on average) processing task requests, but with higher energy consumption compared to the other scenarios. The relays only scenario can serve 74% (57% on average) of the processing task requests with 8% saving in power consumption compared to the hybrid scenario. In contrast, 28% (22% on average) of task requests can be successfully handled by applying the objects only scenario with up to 62% power saving compared to the hybrid scenario.

VLC Systems with CGHs

The achievable data rate in indoor wireless systems that employ visible light communication (VLC) can be limited by multipath propagation. Here, we use computer generated holograms (CGHs) in VLC system design to improve the achievable system data rate. The CGHs are utilized to produce a fixed broad beam from the light source, selecting the light source that offers the best performance. The CGHs direct this beam to a specific zone on the room's communication floor where the receiver is located. This reduces the effect of diffuse reflections. Consequently, decreasing the intersymbol interference (ISI) and enabling the VLC indoor channel to support higher data rates. We consider two settings to examine our propose VLC system and consider lighting constraints. We evaluate the performance in idealistic and realistic room setting in a diffuse environment with up to second order reflections and also under mobility. The results show that using the CGHs enhances the 3dB bandwidth of the VLC channel and improves the received optical power.

Subcarrier Multiplexing for Parallel Data Transmission in Indoor Visible Light Communication Systems

This paper presents an indoor visible light communication (VLC) system in conjunction with an imaging receiver with parallel data transmission (spatial multiplexing) to decrease the effects of inter-symbol interference (ISI). To distinguish between light units (transmitters) and to match the light units used to convey the data with the pixels of the imaging receiver, we propose the use of subcarrier multiplexing (SCM) tones. Each light unit transmission is multiplexed with a unique tone. At the receiver, a SCM tone decision system is utilized to measure the power level of each SCM tone and consequently associate each pixel with a light unit. In addition, the level of co-channel interference (CCI) between light units is estimated using the SCM tones. Our proposed system is examined in two indoor environments taking into account reflective components (first and second order reflections). The results show that this system has the potential to achieve an aggregate data rate of 8 Gb/s with a bit error rate (BER) of 10-6 for each light unit, using simple on-off-keying (OOK).

WDM for Multi-user Indoor VLC Systems with SCM

A system that employs wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) in conjunction with subcarrier multiplexing (SCM) tones is proposed to realize high data rate multi-user indoor visible light communication (VLC). The SCM tones, which are unmodulated signals, are used to identify each light unit, to find the optimum light unit for each user and to calculate the level of the co-channel interference (CCI). WDM is utilized to attain a high data rate for each user. In this paper, multicolour (four colours) laser diodes (LDs) are utilized as sources of lighting and data communication. One of the WDM colours is used to convey the SCM tones at the beginning of the connection to set up the connection among receivers and light units (to find the optimum light unit for each user). To evaluate the performance of our VLC system, we propose two types of receivers: an array of non-imaging receivers (NI-R) and an array of non-imaging angle diversity receivers (NI-ADR). In this paper, we consider the effects of diffuse reflections, CCI and mobility on the system performance.
