Ground state of the Hubbard model with spin-dependent linear potential

We investigate the competition between attractive spin-spin interactions and spin-separating external forces in the ground state of a one-dimensional Fermi-Hubbard model. We consider a lattice with open boundary conditions, subject to a linear external potential whose gradient is opposite for the two spin components, so that each spin species sees a potential minimum at a different end of the lattice. Using density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulations, we map the ground-state density distributions and the number of doubly occupied sites as a function of the potential gradient $β$ and interaction strength. We identify three distinct regimes separated by critical threshold gradients: (i) a small-$β$ regime where fermion pairing remains robust against the external potential; (ii) an intermediate-$β$ phase-separated regime characterized by a staircase-like decrease in the doublon number, corresponding to the successive, one-by-one breaking of bound pairs; and (iii) a large-$β$ regime where the two spin components are completely spatially separated. We complement the numerical results with a phenomenological model and a local-density approximation analysis, from which we derive closed-form analytical estimates for these critical threshold values. We also verify that the staircase structure persists under additional harmonic confinement. Our results are directly testable in cold-atom experiments, and demonstrate that a spin-dependent linear potential enables precise, integer-level control of the number of bound fermion pairs.

Tunable two-species spin models with Rydberg atoms in circular and elliptical states

We propose a scheme for constructing versatile quantum simulators using ultracold Rydberg atoms in long-lived circular and elliptical states. By exciting different subspaces of internal atomic states, the atoms can be used to simulate two effective spin species with different spin-spin interactions. The strengths of transverse and longitudinal spin-spin interactions, both intra- and inter-species, can be controlled within a wide range of values. This setup can be used to simulate two-species spin models or lattice models with two sublattices. We show examples of specific models which can be realized.

Exact dynamics of two ultra-cold bosons confined in a one-dimensional double-well potential

The dynamics of two ultra-cold bosons confined in a one-dimensional double-well potential is studied. We compare the exact dynamics governed by a full two-body Hamiltonian with the dynamics obtained in a two-mode model approximation. We show that for sufficiently large interactions the two-mode model breaks down and higher single-particle states have to be taken into account to describe the dynamical properties of the system correctly.

Quantum simulation of the central spin model with a Rydberg atom and polar molecules in optical tweezers

Central spin models, where a single spinful particle interacts with a spin environment, find wide application in quantum information technology and can be used to describe, e.g., the decoherence of a qubit over time. We propose a method of realizing an ultracold quantum simulator of a central spin model with XX (spin-exchanging) interactions. The proposed system consists of a single Rydberg atom ("central spin") and surrounding polar molecules ("bath spins"), coupled to each other via dipole-dipole interactions. By mapping internal particle states to spin states, spin-exchanging interactions can be simulated. As an example system geometry, we consider a ring-shaped arrangement of bath spins, and show how it allows us to exact precise control over the interaction strengths. We numerically analyze two example dynamical scenarios which can be simulated in this setup: a decay of central spin polarization, which can represent qubit decoherence in a disordered environment, and a transfer of an input spin state to a specific output spin, which can represent the transmission of a single bit across a quantum network. We demonstrate that this setup allows us to realize a central spin model with highly tunable parameters and geometry, for applications in quantum science and technology.

Unconventional pairing in few-fermion systems tuned by external confinement

We study the ground-state properties of a two-component one-dimensional system of a few ultra-cold fermions with attractive interactions. We show that, by ramping up an external potential barrier felt by one of the components, it is possible to induce regions of exotic superfluid phases, characterized by a tunable finite net momentum of the Cooper pair, without changing the overall spin populations. We show that these phases, which are the few-body analogs of the celebrated Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state, can be distinguished by analyzing a specific two-particle correlation encoded in the noise correlation function. Our theoretical results can be addressed in current experiments with cold atoms confined in spin-selective optical traps.

Two Rydberg-dressed atoms escaping from an open well

A comprehensive analysis of the dynamics of two Rydberg-dressed particles (bosons or fermions) tunneling from a potential well into open space is provided. We show that the dominant decay mechanism switches from sequential tunneling to pair tunneling when the interaction strength is tuned below a certain critical value. These critical values can be modified by tuning the effective range of the interaction potential. By comparing the dynamics for bosons and fermions, we show that there are significant differences between the two cases. In particular, increasing the interaction range modifies the tunneling rate in opposite ways for fermions and bosons. Furthermore, for the fermionic system much stronger attractive interactions are needed to achieve pair tunneling. The results provide insight into the dynamics of tunneling systems and, in light of recent realizations of tunneling few-body systems and Rydberg dressing of atoms, they offer promise for future experiments.

Simulating artificial one-dimensional physics with ultra-cold fermionic atoms: three exemplary themes

For over twenty years, ultra-cold atomic systems have formed an almost perfect arena for simulating different quantum many-body phenomena and exposing their non-obvious and very often counterintuitive features. Thanks to extremely precise controllability of different parameters they are able to capture different quantum properties which were previously recognized only as theoretical curiosities. Here, we go over the current experimental progress in exploring the curious one-dimensional quantum world of fermions from the perspective of three subjectively selected trends being currently under vigorous experimental validation: (i) unconventional pairing in attractively interacting fermionic mixtures, (ii) fermionic systems subjected to the artificial spin-orbit coupling, (iii) fermionic gases of atoms with high SU(N) symmetry of internal states.

Momentum correlations of a few ultra-cold bosons escaping from an open well

The dynamical properties of a one-dimensional system of two and three bosons escaping from an open potential well are studied in terms of the momentum distributions of particles. In the case of a two-boson system, it is shown that the single- and two-particle momentum distributions undergo a specific transition as the interaction strength is tuned through the point where tunneling switches from the pair tunneling to the sequential one. Characteristic features in the momentum spectra can be used to quantitatively determine the participation of specific decay processes. A corresponding analysis is also performed for the three-boson system, showing a scheme for generalizations to higher particle numbers. For completeness, the time-dependent Tan's contact of the system is also examined and its dynamics is found to undergo a similar transition. The results provide insight into the dynamics of decaying few-body systems and offer potential interest for experimental research.

Dynamics of a few interacting bosons escaping from an open well

The dynamics of a few ultra-cold bosons tunneling from a one-dimensional potential well into open space is studied. In such a system several decay channels can be distinguished, each corresponding to a different number of bosons escaping simultaneously. We show that as the interparticle interaction strength is changed, the system undergoes transitions between distinct regimes characterized by the dominance of different decay channels. These transitions are reflected in the behavior of the decay rate of the system, which is measurable experimentally. By means of a simple theoretical description we show that the transitions occur at the points where a new decay channel becomes energetically viable. The results provide insight into the behavior of decaying few-body systems and may have potential interest to experiments.

Effective three-body interactions for bosons in a double-well confinement

When describing the low-energy physics of bosons in a double-well potential with a high barrier between the wells and sufficiently weak atom-atom interactions, one can to a good approximation ignore the high energy states and thereby obtain an effective two-mode model. Here, we show that the regime in which the two-mode model is valid can be extended by adding an on-site three-body interaction term and a three-body interaction-induced tunneling term to the two-mode Hamiltonian. These terms effectively account for virtual transitions to the higher energy states. We determine appropriate strengths of the three-body terms by an optimization of the minimal value of the wave function overlap within a certain time window. Considering different initial states with three or four atoms, we find that the resulting model accurately captures the dynamics of the system for parameters where the two-mode model without the three-body terms is poor. We also investigate the dependence of the strengths of the three-body terms on the barrier height and the atom-atom interaction strength. The optimal three-body interaction strengths depend on the initial state of the system.

Effective two-mode description of a few ultra-cold bosons in a double-well potential

We present a construction of an improved two-mode model for modeling the dynamics of interacting ultra-cold bosons confined in a one-dimensional double well trap. Unlike in the typically used two-mode model based on the lowest single-particle eigenstates of the external potential, the improved model uses a basis of properly chosen effective wave functions originating in the many-body model. Accuracy of the improved model is examined and it is shown that within a certain limit of inter-particle interaction strength, the model recovers an exact evolution of the wells' populations much more closely than the traditional two-mode model.
