Vector peakon equations and isospectral flows in Clifford algebras

Starting from a spectral problem posed in a Clifford algebra with $d$ generators and Euclidean signature, we study an integrable, coupled system of PDEs that can be viewed as a vector perturbation of the Camassa--Holm equation with residual orthogonal symmetry. In the two-component case $d=2$, we show that the travelling wave solutions correspond to a Liouville integrable Hamiltonian system with two degrees of freedom, making use of a reciprocal transformation linking the coupled PDEs to a symmetry of the Hirota--Satsuma system. We also present a symmetry classification of all integrable two-component perturbations of Camassa--Holm, and find that besides the $d=2$ system analyzed here, the coupled 2CH system studied by Olver and Rosenau (as well as by Chen, Liu and Zhang, and Falqui), and equations related to either of those systems by Miura transformations, we also obtain a new system that (to the best of our knowledge) has not been reported previously. For the case of an arbitrary number of components $d$, we additionally investigate the short-pulse (high-frequency) regime, in which the limiting dynamics are governed by a vector-valued Hunter-Saxton type system. Furthermore, we provide a detailed analysis of the corresponding measure-valued (weak) solutions associated with this system.

Two-peakon dynamics in the Clifford algebra generalization of the Camassa-Holm equation

We study the dynamics of a two-component perturbation of the Camassa--Holm equation arising from a reformulation of the Euler--Bernoulli beam problem, recently extended to a general Clifford algebra setting. We focus on the original case associated with a Clifford algebra with two generators and Minkowski signature, for which the resulting equation admits nonsmooth soliton solutions (peakons) carrying internal degrees of freedom. We investigate analytically and numerically the dynamics of a two-peakon solution and establish the existence of a synchronized exchange of energy between spatially separated peaks, a phenomenon previously observed only numerically. We obtain a complete description of the long-time dynamics: the amplitudes approach a periodic orbit determined by the spectral invariants, and the resulting hidden periodicity governs the persistent exchange between the two peakons. The limiting orbit and its averaged dynamics are described explicitly in terms of elliptic functions and complete elliptic integrals. We also derive an exact identity relating the peak separation to the accumulated imbalance of the two amplitudes. This identity, combined with a frozen-parameter comparison argument, yields exponential decay of the interaction between the peakons and exponential convergence of the amplitude variables to the limiting periodic orbit. Moreover, once the asymptotic regime is reached, the separation increases from one period of the internal oscillation to the next, even though its instantaneous rate may continue to change sign. These results reveal a dynamical feature absent from the scalar Camassa--Holm equation: a persistent oscillatory transfer of energy between increasingly separated peakons, coupled with quantitatively controlled asymptotic decoupling.

A generalization of the beam problem: Connection to multi-component Camassa-Holm dynamics

We extend the Euler-Bernoulli beam problem, formulated as a matrix string equation with a matrix-valued density, to a setting where the density takes values in a Clifford algebra, and we analyze its isospectral deformations. For discrete densities, we prove that the associated matrix Weyl function admits a Stieltjes-type continued fraction expansion with Clifford-valued coefficients. By mapping the problem from the finite interval to the real line, we uncover a direct link to a multi-component generalization of the Camassa-Holm equation. This yields a vectorized form of the Camassa-Holm equation invariant under arbitrary orthogonal group actions. As an illustration, we examine the dynamics of a two-atom (two-peakon) matrix measure in the special case of a Clifford algebra with two generators and Minkowski signature. Our analysis shows that, even when peakon waves remain spatially separated, they can engage in long-range, synchronized energy exchange.

On the multipeakon system of a two-component Novikov equation

We are exploring variations of the Novikov equation that have weak solutions called peakons. Our focus is on a two-component Novikov equation with a non-self-adjoint $4\times 4$ Lax operator for which we examine the related forward and inverse spectral maps for the peakon sector. To tackle the forward spectral problem, we convert it into a matrix eigenvalue problem, for which the original boundary value problem is a two-fold cover. We then use an isospectral deformation to the long-time regime to calculate the relevant eigenvalues. To support the long-term deformation, we prove the global existence of the peakon flows using ideas based on Moser's deformation method, which was used in his study of the finite Toda lattice. We subsequently solve the inverse problem by studying a trio of Weyl functions that can be approximated simultaneously by rational functions that involve tensor products and an additional symmetry condition. This part of our paper is rooted in Krein's solution to the inverse problem for the Stieltjes string.

A view of the peakon world through the lens of approximation theory

Peakons (peaked solitons) are particular solutions admitted by certain nonlinear PDEs, most famously the Camassa-Holm shallow water wave equation. These solutions take the form of a train of peak-shaped waves, interacting in a particle-like fashion. In this article we give an overview of the mathematics of peakons, with particular emphasis on the connections to classical problems in analysis, such as Padé approximation, mixed Hermite-Padé approximation, multi-point Padé approximation, continued fractions of Stieltjes type and (bi)orthogonal polynomials. The exposition follows the chronological development of our understanding, exploring the peakon solutions of the Camassa-Holm, Degasperis-Procesi, Novikov, Geng-Xue and modified Camassa-Holm (FORQ) equations. All of these paradigm examples are integrable systems arising from the compatibility condition of a Lax pair, and a recurring theme in the context of peakons is the need to properly interpret these Lax pairs in the sense of Schwartz's theory of distributions. We trace out the path leading from distributional Lax pairs to explicit formulas for peakon solutions via a variety of approximation-theoretic problems, and we illustrate the peakon dynamics with graphics.

A 2-component Camassa-Holm equation, Euler-Bernoulli Beam Problem and Non-Commutative Continued Fractions

A new approach to the Euler-Bernoulli beam based on an inhomogeneous matrix string problem is presented. Three ramifications of the approach are developed: (1) motivated by an analogy with the Camassa-Holm equation a class of isospectral deformations of the beam problem is formulated; (2) a reformulation of the matrix string problem in terms of a certain compact operator is used to obtain basic spectral properties of the inhomogeneous matrix string problem with Dirichlet boundary conditions; (3) the inverse problem is solved for the special case of a discrete Euler-Bernoulli beam. The solution involves a non-commutative generalization of Stieltjes' continued fractions, leading to the inverse formulas expressed in terms of ratios of Hankel-like determinants.

Vibrations of an elastic bar, isospectral deformations, and modified Camassa-Holm equations

Vibrations of an elastic rod are described by a Sturm-Liouville system. We present a general discussion of isospectral (spectrum preserving) deformations of such a system. We interpret one family of such deformations in terms of a two-component modified Camassa-Holm equation (2-mCH) and solve completely its dynamics for the case of discrete measures (multipeakons). We show that the underlying system is Hamiltonian and prove its Liouville integrability. The present paper generalizes our previous work on interlacing multipeakons of the 2-mCH and multipeakons of the 1-mCH. We give a unified approach to both equations, emphasizing certain natural family of interpolation problems germane to the solution of the inverse problem for 2-mCH as well as to this type of a Sturm-Liouville system with singular coefficients.

Isospectral flows related to Frobenius-Stickelberger-Thiele polynomials

The isospectral deformations of the Frobenius-Stickelberger-Thiele (FST) polynomials introduced in [32](Spiridonov et al. Commun. Math. Phys. 272:139--165, 2007 ) are studied. For a specific choice of the deformation of the spectral measure, one is led to an integrable lattice (FST lattice), which is indeed an isospectral flow connected with a generalized eigenvalue problem. In the second part of the paper the spectral problem used previously in the study of the modified Camassa-Holm (mCH) peakon lattice is interpreted in terms of the FST polynomials together with the associated FST polynomials, resulting in a map from the mCH peakon lattice to a negative flow of the finite FST lattice. Furthermore, it is pointed out that the degenerate case of the finite FST lattice unexpectedly maps to the interlacing peakon ODE system associated with the two-component mCH equation studied in [17](Chang et al. Adv. Math. 299:1--35, 2016).

The Calogero-Françoise integrable system: algebraic geometry, Higgs fields, and the inverse problem

We review the Calogero-Françoise integrable system, which is a generalization of the Camassa-Holm system. We express solutions as (twisted) Higgs bundles, in the sense of Hitchin, over the projective line. We use this point of view to (a) establish a general answer to the question of linearization of isospectral flow and (b) demonstrate, in the case of two particles, the dynamical meaning of the theta divisor of the spectral curve in terms of mechanical collisions. Lastly, we outline the solution to the inverse problem for CF flows using Stieltjes' continued fractions.

The dynamics of conservative peakons in the NLS hierarchy

Using the tri-hamiltonian splitting method, the authors of [Anco and Mobasheramini, Physica D, 355:1--23, 2017] derived two $U(1)$-invariant nonlinear PDEs that arise from the hierarchy of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation and admit peakons ($non-smooth\ solitons$). In the present paper, these two peakon PDEs are generalized to a family of $U(1)$-invariant peakon PDEs parametrized by the real projective line $ \mathbf{RP} ^1$. All equations in this family are shown to posses $conservative\ peakon \ solutions$ (whose Sobolev $H^1(\mathbf{R})$ norm is time invariant). The Hamiltonian structure for the sector of conservative peakons is identified and the peakon ODEs are shown to be Hamiltonian with respect to several Poisson structures. It is shown that the resulting Hamilonian peakon flows in the case of the two peakon equations derived in [Anco and Mobasheramini, Physica D, 355:1--23, 2017] form orthogonal families, while in general the Hamiltonian peakon flows for two different equations in the general family intersect at a fixed angle equal to the angle between two lines in $ \mathbf{RP} ^1$ parametrizing those two equations. Moreover, it is shown that inverse spectral methods allow one to solve explicitly the dynamics of conservative peakons using explicit solutions to a certain interpolation problem. The graphs of multipeakon solutions confirm the existence of multipeakon breathers as well as asymptotic formation of pairs of two peakon bound states in the non-periodic time domain.

Isospectral flows for the inhomogeneous string density problem

We derive isospectral flows of the mass density in the string boundary value problem corresponding to general boundary conditions. In particular, we show that certain class of rational flows produces in a suitable limit all flows generated by polynomials in negative powers of the spectral parameter. We illustrate the theory with concrete examples of isospectral flows of discrete mass densities which we prove to be Hamiltonian and for which we provide explicit solutions of equations of motion in terms of Stieltjes continued fractions and Hankel determinants.

Liouville integrability of conservative peakons for a modified CH equation

The modified Camassa-Holm equation (also called FORQ) is one of numerous $cousins$ of the Camassa-Holm equation possessing non-smoth solitons ($peakons$) as special solutions. The peakon sector of solutions is not uniquely defined: in one peakon sector (dissapative) the Sobolev $H^1$ norm is not preserved, in the other sector (conservative), introduced in [2], the time evolution of peakons leaves the $H^1$ norm invariant. In this Letter, it is shown that the conservative peakon equations of the modified Camassa-Holm can be given an appropriate Poisson structure relative to which the equations are Hamiltonian and, in fact, Liouville integrable. The latter is proved directly by exploiting the inverse spectral techniques, especially asymptotic analysis of solutions, developed elsewhere (in [3]).

Lax integrability and the peakon problem for the modified Camassa-Holm equation

Peakons are special weak solutions of a class of nonlinear partial differential equations modelling non-linear phenomena such as the breakdown of regularity and the onset of shocks. We show that the natural concept of weak solutions in the case of the modified Camassa-Holm equation studied in this paper is dictated by the distributional compatibility of its Lax pair and, as a result, it differs from the one proposed and used in the literature based on the concept of weak solutions used for equations of the Burgers type. Subsequently, we give a complete construction of peakon solutions satisfying the modified Camassa-Holm equation in the sense of distributions; our approach is based on solving certain inverse boundary value problem the solution of which hinges on a combination of classical techniques of analysis involving Stieltjes' continued fractions and multi-point Padé approximations. We propose sufficient conditions needed to ensure the global existence of peakon solutions and analyze the large time asymptotic behaviour whose special features include a formation of pairs of peakons which share asymptotic speeds, as well as Toda-like sorting property.

Lax Integrability of the Modified Camassa-Holm Equation and the Concept of Peakons

In this Letter we propose that for Lax integrable nonlinear partial differential equations the natural concept of weak solutions is implied by the compatibility condition for the respective distributional Lax pairs. We illustrate our proposal by comparing two concepts of weak solutions of the modified Camassa-Holm equation pointing out that in the peakon sector (a family of non-smooth solitons) only one of them, namely the one obtained from the distributional compatibility condition, supports the time invariance of the Sobolev $H^1$ norm.

Dynamics of interlacing peakons (and shockpeakons) in the Geng-Xue equation

We consider multipeakon solutions, and to some extent also multishockpeakon solutions, of a coupled two-component integrable PDE found by Geng and Xue as a generalization of Novikov's cubically nonlinear Camassa-Holm type equation. In order to make sense of such solutions, we find it necessary to assume that there are no overlaps, meaning that a peakon or shockpeakon in one component is not allowed to occupy the same position as a peakon or shockpeakon in the other component. Therefore one can distinguish many inequivalent configurations, depending on the order in which the peakons or shockpeakons in the two components appear relative to each other. Here we are in particular interested in the case of interlacing peakon solutions, where the peakons alternatingly occur in one component and in the other. Based on explicit expressions for these solutions in terms of elementary functions, we describe the general features of the dynamics, and in particular the asymptotic large-time behaviour. As far as the positions are concerned, interlacing Geng-Xue peakons display the usual scattering phenomenon where the peakons asymptotically travel with constant velocities, which are all distinct, except that the two fastest peakons will have the same velocity. However, in contrast to many other peakon equations, the amplitudes of the peakons will not in general tend to constant values; instead they grow or decay exponentially. Thus the logarithms of the amplitudes (as functions of time) will asymptotically behave like straight lines, and comparing these lines for large positive and negative times, one observes phase shifts similar to those seen for the positions of the peakons. In addition to these K+K interlacing pure peakon solutions, we also investigate 1+1 shockpeakon solutions, and collisions leading to shock formation in a 2+2 peakon-antipeakon solution.

On isospectral deformations of an inhomogeneous string

In this paper we consider a class of isospectral deformations of the inhomogeneous string boundary value problem. The deformations considered are generalizations of the isospectral deformation that has arisen in connection with the Camassa-Holm equation for the shallow water waves. It is proved that these new isospectral deformations result in evolution equations on the mass density whose form depends on how the string is tied at the endpoints. Moreover, it is shown that the evolution equations in this class linearize on the spectral side and hence can be solved by the inverse spectral method. In particular, the problem involving a mass density given by a discrete finite measure and arbitrary boundary conditions is shown to be solvable by Stieltjes' continued fractions.

Multipeakons of a two-component modified Camassa-Holm equation and the relation with the finite Kac-van Moerbeke lattice

A spectral and the inverse spectral problem are studied for the two-component modified Camassa-Holm type for measures associated to interlacing peaks. It is shown that the spectral problem is equivalent to an inhomogenous string problem with Dirichlet/Neumann boundary conditions. The inverse problem is solved by Stieltjes' continued fraction expansion, leading to an explicit construction of peakon solutions. Sufficient conditions for the global existence in $t$ are given. The large time asymptotics reveals that, asymptotically, peakons pair up to form bound states moving with constant speeds. The peakon flow is shown to project to one of the isospectral flows of the finite Kac--van Moerbeke lattice.
