Some properties of frustrated spin systems: extensions and applications of Lieb-Schupp approach

Lieb and Schupp have obtained, using certain version of ``spin-reflection positivity'' method, a number of ground-state properties for frustrated Heisenberg models. One group of these results is related to singlet nature of ground state and it needs an assumption of reflection symmetry present in the system. In this paper, it is shown that the result holds also for other symmetries (inversion etc.). The second Lieb-Schupp result is relation between ground-state energies of certain systems. In the paper, this relation is applied to multidimensional models on various lattices.

Phase diagram of the two-dimensional t-t' Falicov-Kimball model

The ground-state phase diagram of two-dimensional Falicov-Kimball model with nearest-neighbour and next-nearest-neighbour hoppings (characterized by t,t' constants, respectively) has been studied in perturbative regime, i.e. in the case when on-site Coulomb interaction constant U is much larger than t,t' ones. The fourth-order phase diagram exhibits a rich structure, more complicated than for the ordinary Falicov-Kimball model. Possible experimental implications of the presence of nnn term are shortly discussed.

Cumulant ratios and their scaling functions for Ising systems in strip geometries

We calculate the fourth-order cumulant ratio (proposed by Binder) for the two-dimensional Ising model in a strip geometry L x oo. The Density Matrix Renormalization Group method enables us to consider typical open boundary conditions up to L=200. Universal scaling functions of the cumulant ratio are determined for strips with parallel as well as opposing surface fields.
