Poissonian limit of soft gluon multiplicity

It is shown that the gluons produced with small transverse momenta $k_\perp$ inside a jet ($k_\perp <k_\perp^{cut}$, $k_\perp^{cut} \to 0$) are independently emitted from the primary parton, as QCD coherence suppresses their showering. Consequently, the low $k_{\perp}$ gluons follow a Poisson distribution, very much like the soft photons radiated by a charged particle in QED. On the contrary, the distribution of gluons with limited absolute momenta $|\vec{k} | <k^{cut}$ remains non-Poissonian even for small $k^{cut}$. It will be interesting to find out to what extent this perturbative prediction for partons survives the hadronization process.

Critical Angle in the Parton Cascade

The angular correlation function of partons in a jet, as derived from perturbative QCD, is nonanalytic at a critical angle which separates a multiparticle regime with scaling properties from a regime with few particles near the hadronisation scale. Some phenomenological consequences are discussed.

Double Scaling of Angular Correlations inside Jets

Angular correlations of partons have been derived for high energy jets in QCD. Interesting new scaling properties with two redundant variables (jet energy $P$ and jet opening angle $Θ$) emerge which can be tested within a parton-hadron duality picture. Recent results from LEP support the scaling in $Θ$; the scaling in both $P$ and $Θ$ could be tested with jets from deep inelastic scattering or with high $p_T$ jets.

Angular structure of QCD jets

We derive the angular correlation functions between an arbitary number of partons inside a quark or gluon jet emerging from a high energy hard collision. As an application results for the correlation in the relative angle between two partons as well as the multiplicity moments of any order for partons in a sidewise angular region are calculated. At asymptotic energies the distributions of rescaled angular variables approach a scaling limit of a new type with two redundant quantities. All observables reveal the power behaviour characteristic to the fully developed selfsimilar cascade in appropriate regions of phase space. We present analytical results from the double logarithmic approximation as well as Monte Carlo results.

Vacuum structure of pure gauge theories on the lattice

We present results from simulations on two aspects of quark confinement in the pure gauge sector. First is the calculation of the profile of the flux tube connecting a static $q \bar{q}$ pair in $SU(2)$. By using the Michael sum rules as a constraint we give evidence that the energy density at the center of the flux tube goes to a constant as a function of quark separation. Slow variation of the width and energy density is not ruled out. Secondly in the confined phase of lattice $U(1)$ we calculate the curl of the magnetic monopole current and show that the dual London equation is satisfied and that the electric fluxoid is quantized.
