Symmetric power functoriality for holomorphic modular forms

Let $f$ be a cuspidal Hecke eigenform of level 1. We prove the automorphy of the symmetric power lifting $\mathrm{Sym}^n f$ for every $n \geq 1$. We establish the same result for a more general class of cuspidal Hecke eigenforms, including all those associated to semistable elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$.

Modularity of $\operatorname{PGL}_2(\mathbb{F}_p)$-representations over totally real fields

We study an analogue of Serre's modularity conjecture for projective representations $\overlineρ: \operatorname{Gal}(\overline{K} / K) \rightarrow \operatorname{PGL}_2(k)$, where $K$ is a totally real number field. We prove new cases of this conjecture when $k = \mathbb{F}_5$ by using the automorphy lifting theorems over CM fields established in previous work of the authors.

A local Langlands parameterization for generic supercuspidal representations of $p$-adic $G_2$

We construct a Langlands parameterization of supercuspidal representations of $G_2$ over a $p$-adic field. More precisely, for any finite extension $K / \QQ_p$ we will construct a bijection \[ \CL_g : \CA^0_g(G_2,K) \rightarrow \CG^0(G_2,K) \] from the set of generic supercuspidal representations of $G_2(K)$ to the set of irreducible continuous homomorphisms $ρ: W_K \to G_2(\CC)$ with $W_K$ the Weil group of $K$. The construction of the map is simply a matter of assembling arguments that are already in the literature, together with a previously unpublished theorem of G. Savin on exceptional theta correspondences, included as an appendix. The proof that the map is a bijection is arithmetic in nature, and specifically uses automorphy lifting theorems. These can be applied thanks to a recent result of Hundley and Liu on automorphic descent from $GL(7)$ to $G_2$.

Potential automorphy of $\widehat{G}$-local systems

Vincent Lafforgue has recently made a spectacular breakthrough in the setting of the global Langlands correspondence for global fields of positive characteristic, by constructing the `automorphic--to--Galois' direction of the correspondence for an arbitrary reductive group $G$. We discuss a result that starts with Lafforgue's work and proceeds in the opposite (`Galois--to--automorphic') direction.

$\hat{G}$-local systems on smooth projective curves are potentially automorphic

Let $X$ be a smooth, projective, geometrically connected curve over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, and let $G$ be a split semisimple algebraic group over $\mathbb{F}_q$. Its dual group $\hat{G}$ is a split reductive group over $\mathbb{Z}$. Conjecturally, any $l$-adic $\hat{G}$-local system on $X$ (equivalently, any conjugacy class of continuous homomorphisms $π_1(X) \to \hat{G}(\bar{\mathbb{Q}}_l)$) should be associated to an everywhere unramified automorphic representation of the group $G$. We show that for any homomorphism $π_1(X) \to \hat{G}(\bar{\mathbb{Q}}_l)$ of Zariski dense image, there exists a finite Galois cover $Y \to X$ over which the associated local system becomes automorphic.

On the arithmetic of simple singularities of type E

An ADE Dynkin diagram gives rise to a family of algebraic curves. In this paper, we use arithmetic invariant theory to study the integral points of the curves associated to the exceptional diagrams $E_6, E_7$, $E_8$. These curves are non-hyperelliptic of genus 3 or 4. We prove that a positive proportion of each family consists of curves with integral points everywhere locally but no integral points globally.

Arithmetic invariant theory and 2-descent for plane quartic curves

Given a smooth plane quartic curve C over a field k of characteristic 0, with Jacobian variety J, and a marked rational point P of C(k), we construct a reductive group G and a G-variety X, together with an injection J(k)/2J(k) -> G(k)\X(k). We do this using the Mumford theta group of J, and a construction of Lurie which passes from Heisenberg groups to Lie algebras.

Potential automorphy and the Leopoldt conjecture

We study in this paper Hida's p-adic Hecke algebra for GL_n over a CM field F. Hida has made a conjecture about the dimension of these Hecke algebras, which he calls the non-abelian Leopoldt conjecture, and shown that his conjecture in the case of F being the rationals implies the classical Leopoldt conjecture for a number field K of degree n over the rationals, if one assumes further the existence of automorphic induction of characters for the extension K over the rationals. We study Hida's conjecture using the automorphy lifting techniques adapted to the GL_n setting by Calegari--Geraghty. We prove an automorphy lifting result in this setting, conditional on existence and local-global compatibility of Galois representations arising from torsion classes in the cohomology of the corresponding symmetric manifolds. Under the same conditions we show that one can deduce the classical (abelian) Leopoldt conjectures for a totally real number field K and a prime p using Hida's non-abelian Leopoldt conjecture for p-adic Hecke algebra for GL_n over CM fields without needing to assume automorphic induction of characters for the extension K over the rationals. For this methods of potential automorphy results are used.

On the average number of 2-Selmer elements of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{F}_q(X)$ with two marked points

We consider elliptic curves over global fields of positive characteristic with two distinct marked non-trivial rational points. Restricting to a certain subfamily of the universal one, we show that the average size of the 2-Selmer groups of these curves exists, in a natural sense, and equals 12. Along the way, we consider a map from these 2-Selmer groups to the moduli space of $G$-torsors over an algebraic curve, where $G$ is isogenous to $\mathrm{SL}_2^4$, and show that the images of 2-Selmer elements under this map become equidistributed in the limit.

Automorphy of some residually dihedral Galois representations

We establish the automorphy of some families of 2-dimensional representations of the absolute Galois group of a totally real field, which do not satisfy the so-called `Taylor--Wiles hypothesis'. We apply this to the problem of the modularity of elliptic curves over totally real fields

Automorphy of some residually S_5 Galois representations

We prove automorphy lifting theorems for 2-dimensional Galois representations of absolute Galois groups of totally real fields when the residual representation is of "exceptional" type. This exceptional case is when we are in characteristic 5, the residual representation has projective image PGL_2(F_5), and the fixed field of its kernel contains a primitive 5th root of unity. In this case the Taylor-Wiles patching method does not suffice and we prove our theorem by combining patching with the technique of automorphy by p-adic approximation.
