Categorical Foundations for CuTe Layouts

NVIDIA's CUTLASS library provides a robust and expressive set of methods for describing and manipulating multi-dimensional tensor data on the GPU. These methods are conceptually grounded in the abstract notion of a CuTe layout and a rich algebra of such layouts, including operations such as composition, logical product, and logical division. In this paper, we present a categorical framework for understanding this layout algebra by focusing on a naturally occurring class of tractable layouts. To this end, we define two categories Tuple and Nest whose morphisms give rise to layouts. We define a suite of operations on morphisms in these categories and prove their compatibility with the corresponding layout operations. Moreover, we give a complete characterization of the layouts which arise from our construction. Finally, we provide a Python implementation of our categorical constructions, along with tests that demonstrate alignment with CUTLASS behavior. This implementation can be found at our git repository https://github.com/ColfaxResearch/layout-categories.

Periodic phenomena in equivariant stable homotopy theory

Building off of many recent advances in the subject by many different researchers, we describe a picture of A-equivariant chromatic homotopy theory which mirrors the now classical non-equivariant picture of Morava, Miller-Ravenel-Wilson, and Devinatz-Hopkins-Smith, where A is a finite abelian p-group. Specifically, we review the structure of the Balmer spectrum of the category of A-spectra, and the work of Hausmann-Meier connecting this to MU_A and equivariant formal group laws. Generalizing work of Bhattacharya-Guillou-Li, we introduce equivariant analogs of v_n-self maps, and generalizing work of Carrick and Balderrama, we introduce equivariant analogs of the chromatic tower, and give equivariant analogs of the smash product and chromatic convergence theorems. The equivariant monochromatic theory is also discussed. We explore computational examples of this theory in the case of A = C_2, where we connect equivariant chromatic theory with redshift phenomena in Mahowald invariants.

Real Global Group Laws and Hu-Kriz Maps

Recently, Hausmann defined global group laws and used them to prove that $MU^G_*$ is the $G$-equivariant Lazard ring, for $G$ a compact abelian Lie group. On the other hand, Hu and Kriz showed that the restriction map induces an isomorphism $M \mathbb{R}^{C_2}_{ρ*} \cong MU_{2*}$. In this paper, we blend these stories. We utilize the $C_2$-global spectrum $\mathbf{MR}$ defined by Schwede in an unpublished note, which gives rise to a genuine $G$-spectrum $M \mathbb{R}_η$ for each augmented compact Lie groups $η: G\to C_2$, simultaneously generalizing $MU_G$ and $M \mathbb{R}$. In the case of semi-direct product augmentations $G \rtimes C_2\to C_2$ with $G$ compact abelian Lie and $C_2$ acting by inversion, we show that the restriction along the inclusion $G \subset G \rtimes C_2$ is a split surjection $M \mathbb{R}^{G \rtimes C_2}_{ρ*} \rightarrow MU^{G}_{2*}$. Additionally, we propose an evenness conjecture, which implies that this map is an isomorphism. Along the way, we define Real $η$-orientations, Real global orientations, and corresponding notions of equivariant and global group laws.

Cobordism of G-manifolds

We survey some results in the field of equivariant cobordism. In particular, we use methods from equivariant stable homotopy theory to calculate the unoriented $C_2$-equivariant bordism ring $Ω^{C_2}_*$, which was originally calculated by Alexander using other methods. Our proof method generalizes well to other settings, such as equivariant complex cobordism, and affords a formal group theoretic interpretation of Alexander's calculation.

Complex cobordism with involutions and geometric orientations

We calculate the cobordism ring $Ω^{C_2}_*$ of stably almost complex manifolds with involution, and investigate the $C_2$-spectrum $Ω_{C_2}$ which represents it. We introduce the notion of a geometrically oriented $C_2$-spectrum, which extends the notion of a complex oriented $C_2$-spectrum, and of which $Ω_{C_2}$ is the universal example. Examples, in addition to $Ω_{C_2}$, include the Eilenberg-Maclane spectrum $H \underline{\mathbb{Z}}_{C_2}$ and the connective cover $k_{C_2}$ of $C_2$-equivariant $K$-theory. On the algebraic side, we define and study filtered $C_2$-equivariant formal group laws, which are the algebraic structures determined by geometrically oriented $C_2$-spectra. We prove some of the fundamental properties of filtered $C_2$-equivariant formal group laws, as well as a universality statement for the filtered $C_2$-equivariant formal group law determined by $Ω_{C_2}$.
