A note on graphs with exactly two main eigenvalues

In this note, we consider connected graphs with exactly two main eigenvalues. We will give several constructions for them, and as a consequence we show a family of those graphs with an unbounded number of distinct valencies.

An application of Hoffman graphs for spectral characterizations of graphs

In this paper, we present the first application of Hoffman graphs for spectral characterizations of graphs. In particular, we show that the $2$-clique extension of the $(t+1)\times(t+1)$-grid is determined by its spectrum when $t$ is large enough. This result will help to show that the Grassmann graph $J_2(2D,D)$ is determined by its intersection numbers as a distance regular graph, if $D$ is large enough.

Distance-regular graphs

This is a survey of distance-regular graphs. We present an introduction to distance-regular graphs for the reader who is unfamiliar with the subject, and then give an overview of some developments in the area of distance-regular graphs since the monograph 'BCN' [Brouwer, A.E., Cohen, A.M., Neumaier, A., Distance-Regular Graphs, Springer-Verlag, Berlin, 1989] was written.

Biregular graphs with three eigenvalues

We consider nonregular graphs having precisely three distinct eigenvalues. The focus is mainly on the case of graphs having two distinct valencies and our results include constructions of new examples, structure theorems, valency constraints, and a classification of certain special families of such graphs. We also present a new example of a graph with three valencies and three eigenvalues of which there are currently only finitely many known examples.

Graphs with many valencies and few eigenvalues

Dom de Caen posed the question whether connected graphs with three distinct eigenvalues have at most three distinct valencies. We do not answer this question, but instead construct connected graphs with four and five distinct eigenvalues and arbitrarily many distinct valencies. The graphs with four distinct eigenvalues come from regular two-graphs. As a side result, we characterize the disconnected graphs and the graphs with three distinct eigenvalues in the switching class of a regular two-graph.

2-walk-regular dihedrants from group-divisible designs

In this note, we construct bipartite 2-walk-regular graphs with exactly 6 distinct eigenvalues as incidence graphs of group-divisible designs with the dual property. For many of them, we show that they are 2-arc-transitive dihedrants. We note that many of these graphs are not described in Du et al. [7, Theorem1.2], in which they classify the connected 2-arc transitive dihedrants.

Regular graphs with maximal energy per vertex

We study the energy per vertex in regular graphs. For every k, we give an upper bound for the energy per vertex of a k-regular graph, and show that a graph attains the upper bound if and only if it is the disjoint union of incidence graphs of projective planes of order k-1 or, in case k=2, the disjoint union of triangles and hexagons. For every k, we also construct k-regular subgraphs of incidence graphs of projective planes for which the energy per vertex is close to the upper bound. In this way, we show that this upper bound is asymptotically tight.

The Terwilliger polynomial of a Q-polynomial distance-regular graph and its application to the pseudo-partition graphs

Let $Γ$ be a $Q$-polynomial distance-regular graph with diameter at least $3$. Terwilliger (1993) implicitly showed that there exists a polynomial, say $T(λ)\in \mathbb{C}[λ]$, of degree $4$ depending only on the intersection numbers of $Γ$ and such that $T(η)\geq 0$ holds for any non-principal eigenvalue $η$ of the local graph $Γ(x)$ for any vertex $x\in V(Γ)$. We call $T(λ)$ the Terwilliger polynomial of $Γ$. In this paper, we give an explicit formula for $T(λ)$ in terms of the intersection numbers of $Γ$ and its dual eigenvalues. We then apply this polynomial to show that all pseudo-partition graphs with diameter at least $3$ are known.

Disconnecting strongly regular graphs

In this paper, we show that the minimum number of vertices whose removal disconnects a connected strongly regular graph into non-singleton components, equals the size of the neighborhood of an edge for many graphs. These include blocks graphs of Steiner $2$-designs, many Latin square graphs and strongly regular graphs whose intersection parameters are at most a quarter of their valency.

Geometric aspects of 2-walk-regular graphs

A $t$-walk-regular graph is a graph for which the number of walks of given length between two vertices depends only on the distance between these two vertices, as long as this distance is at most $t$. Such graphs generalize distance-regular graphs and $t$-arc-transitive graphs. In this paper, we will focus on 1- and in particular 2-walk-regular graphs, and study analogues of certain results that are important for distance regular graphs. We will generalize Delsarte's clique bound to 1-walk-regular graphs, Godsil's multiplicity bound and Terwilliger's analysis of the local structure to 2-walk-regular graphs. We will show that 2-walk-regular graphs have a much richer combinatorial structure than 1-walk-regular graphs, for example by proving that there are finitely many non-geometric 2-walk-regular graphs with given smallest eigenvalue and given diameter (a geometric graph is the point graph of a special partial linear space); a result that is analogous to a result on distance-regular graphs. Such a result does not hold for 1-walk-regular graphs, as our construction methods will show.

On a conjecture of Brouwer involving the connectivity of strongly regular graphs

In this paper, we study a conjecture of Andries E. Brouwer from 1996 regarding the minimum number of vertices of a strongly regular graph whose removal disconnects the graph into non-singleton components. We show that strongly regular graphs constructed from copolar spaces and from the more general spaces called $Δ$-spaces are counterexamples to Brouwer's Conjecture. Using J.I. Hall's characterization of finite reduced copolar spaces, we find that the triangular graphs $T(m)$, the symplectic graphs $Sp(2r,q)$ over the field $\mathbb{F}_q$ (for any $q$ prime power), and the strongly regular graphs constructed from the hyperbolic quadrics $O^{+}(2r,2)$ and from the elliptic quadrics $O^{-}(2r,2)$ over the field $\mathbb{F}_2$, respectively, are counterexamples to Brouwer's Conjecture. For each of these graphs, we determine precisely the minimum number of vertices whose removal disconnects the graph into non-singleton components. While we are not aware of an analogue of Hall's characterization theorem for $Δ$-spaces, we show that complements of the point graphs of certain finite generalized quadrangles are point graphs of $Δ$-spaces and thus, yield other counterexamples to Brouwer's Conjecture. We prove that Brouwer's Conjecture is true for many families of strongly regular graphs including the conference graphs, the generalized quadrangles $GQ(q,q)$ graphs, the lattice graphs, the Latin square graphs, the strongly regular graphs with smallest eigenvalue -2 (except the triangular graphs) and the primitive strongly regular graphs with at most 30 vertices except for few cases. We leave as an open problem determining the best general lower bound for the minimum size of a disconnecting set of vertices of a strongly regular graph, whose removal disconnects the graph into non-singleton components.

Distance-regular graph with large a1 or c2

In this paper, we study distance-regular graphs $Γ$ that have a pair of distinct vertices, say x and y, such that the number of common neighbors of x and y is about half the valency of $Γ$. We show that if the diameter is at least three, then such a graph, besides a finite number of exceptions, is a Taylor graph, bipartite with diameter three or a line graph.

Bounds for the Huckel energy of a graph

Let $G$ be a graph on $n$ vertices with $r := \lfloor n/2 \rfloor$ and let $λ_1 \geq...\geq λ_{n} $ be adjacency eigenvalues of $G$. Then the Hückel energy of $G$, HE($G$), is defined as $$\he(G) = {ll} 2\sum_{i=1}^{r} λ_i, & \hbox{if $n= 2r$;} 2\sum_{i=1}^{r} λ_i + λ_{r+1}, & \hbox{if $n= 2r+1$.} $$ The concept of Hückel energy was introduced by Coulson as it gives a good approximation for the $π$-electron energy of molecular graphs. We obtain two upper bounds and a lower bound for HE$(G)$. When $n$ is even, it is shown that equality holds in both upper bounds if and only if $G$ is a strongly regular graph with parameters $(n, k, λ, μ) = (4t^2 +4t +2, 2t^2 +3t +1, t^2 +2t, t^2 + 2t +1),$ for positive integer $t$. Furthermore, we will give an infinite family of these strongly regular graph whose construction was communicated by Willem Haemers to us. He attributes the construction to J.J. Seidel.
