General Hilbert stacks and Quot schemes

We prove the algebraicity of the Hilbert functor, the Hilbert stack, the Quot functor and the stack of coherent sheaves on an algebraic stack X with (quasi-)finite diagonal without any finiteness assumptions on X. We also give similar results for Hom stacks and Weil restrictions.

The Balmer spectrum of a tame stack

Let $X$ be a quasi-compact algebraic stack with quasi-finite and separated diagonal. We classify the thick $\otimes$-ideals of $\mathsf{D}_{\mathrm{qc}}(X)^c$. If $X$ is tame, then we also compute the Balmer spectrum of the $\otimes$-triangulated category of perfect complexes on $X$. In addition, if $X$ admits a coarse space $X_{\mathrm{cs}}$, then we prove that the Balmer spectra of $X$ and $X_{\mathrm{cs}}$ are naturally isomorphic.

The Hilbert Stack

Let π: X -> S be a morphism of algebraic stacks that is locally of finite presentation with affine stabilizers. We prove that there is an algebraic S-stack, the Hilbert stack, parameterizing proper algebraic stacks mapping quasi-finitely to X. This was previously unknown, even for a morphism of schemes.

Artin's criteria for algebraicity revisited

Using notions of homogeneity we give new proofs of M. Artin's algebraicity criteria for functors and groupoids. Our methods give a more general result, unifying Artin's two theorems and clarifying their differences.

Openness of versality via coherent functors

We give a proof of openness of versality using coherent functors. As an application, we streamline Artin's criterion for algebraicity of a stack. We also introduce multi-step obstruction theories, employing them to produce obstruction theories for the stack of coherent sheaves, the Quot functor, and spaces of maps in the presence of non-flatness.

Cohomology and base change for algebraic stacks

We prove that cohomology and base change holds for algebraic stacks, generalizing work of Brochard in the tame case. We also show that Hom-spaces on algebraic stacks are represented by abelian cones, generalizing results of Grothendieck, Brochard, Olsson, Lieblich, and Roth--Starr. To accomplish all of this, we prove that a wide class of Ext-functors in algebraic geometry are coherent (in the sense of M. Auslander).

Generalizing the GAGA Principle

This paper generalizes the fundamental GAGA results of Serre cite{MR0082175} in three ways---to the non-separated setting, to stacks, and to families. As an application of these results, we show that analytic compactifications of $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ possessing modular interpretations are algebraizable.

Moduli of Singular Curves

The purpose of this note is to prove that there is an algebraic stack U parameterizing all curves. The curves that appear in the algebraic stack U are allowed to be arbitrarily singular, non-reduced, disconnected, and reducible. We also prove the boundedness of the open substack of U parameterizing geometrically connected curves with fixed arithmetic genus g and $\leq$ e irreducible components. This is an updated and expanded version of [arXiv:0902.3690v2, Appendix B].
