The motivic Thom isomorphism

The existence of a good theory of Thom isomorphisms in some rational category of mixed Tate motives would permit a nice interpolation between ideas of Kontsevich on deformation quantization, and ideas of Connes and Kreimer on a Galois theory of renormalization, mediated by Deligne's ideas on motivic Galois groups.

On the canonical formula of C. Levi-Strauss

The anthropologist Claude LeviStrauss has formulated a theory of the structure of myths using a formalism borrowed from mathematics, which has been difficult to interpret, and is somewhat controversial. Nevertheless, LeviStrauss's old school chum Andre Weil took his work seriously, and in this note I propose an interpretation of LeviStrauss's `canonical formula' in terms of an anti-automorphism of the quaternion group of order eight.

Heisenberg groups in algebraic topology

We study the Madsen-Tillmann spectrum $\C P^\infty_{-1}$ as a quotient of the Mahowald pro-object $\C P^{\infty}_{-\infty}$, which is closely related to the Tate cohomology of circle actions. That theory has an associated symplectic structure, whose symmetries define the Virasoro operations on the cohomology of moduli space constructed by Kontsevich and Witten.

The tangent bundle of an almost-complex free loopspace

The main construction of this paper contains a serious error, and I am withdrawing it. I owe Andrew Stacey and Ralph Cohen thanks for seeing the problem; in particular, Stacey has shown that the projections constructed in §3.1 will fail in general to have constant rank, so the family ${\bf T}V$ of vector spaces defined by their images fails to be a vector bundle. I'm very sorry to have caused this confusion. To researchers interested in these questions, I recommend the papers of Cohen, Godin, and Stacey cited below: R. Cohen, V. Godin, A polarized view of string topology, available at {\tt math.AT/0303003} R. Cohen, A. Stacey, Fourier decomposition of loop bundles, available at {\tt math.AT/0210351}

Pretty Good Gravity

A theory of topological gravity is a homotopy-theoretic representation of the Segal-Tillmann topologification of a two-category with cobordisms as morphisms. This note describes a relatively accessible example of such a thing, suggested by the wall-crossing formulas of Donaldson theory.

Tate cohomology of circle actions as a Heisenberg group

We study the Madsen-Tillman spectrum \CP^\infty_{-1} as a quotient of the Mahowald pro-object \CP^\infty_{-\infty}, which is closely related to the Tate cohomology of circle actions. That theory has an associated symplectic structure, whose symmetries define the Virasoro operations on the cohomology of moduli space constructed by Kontsevich and Witten.

Braids, trees, and operads

The space of unordered configurations of distinct points in the plane is aspherical, with Artin's braid group as its fundamental group. Remarkably enough, the space of ordered configurations of distinct points on the real projective line, modulo projective equivalence, has a natural compactification (as a space of equivalence classes of trees) which is also (by a theorem of Davis, Januszkiewicz, and Scott) aspherical. The classical braid groups are ubiquitous in modern mathematics, with applications from the theory of operads to the study of the Galois group of the rationals. The fundamental groups of these new configuration spaces are not braid groups, but they have many similar formal properties.

An algebraic analog of the Virasoro group

The group of diffeomorphisms of a circle is not an infinite-dimensional algebraic group, though in many ways it behaves as if it were. Here we construct an algebraic model for this object, and discuss some of its representations, which appear in the Kontsevich-Witten theory of two-dimensional topological gravity through the homotopy theory of moduli spaces.

A renormalized Riemann-Roch formula and the Thom isomorphism for the free loop space

Let E be a circle-equivariant complex-orientable cohomology theory. We show that the fixed-point formula applied to the free loopspace of a manifold X can be understood as a Riemann-Roch formula for the quotient of the formal group of E by a free cyclic subgroup. The quotient is not representable, but (locally at p) its p-torsion subgroup is, by a p-divisible group of height one greater than the formal group of E.

Cobordism of symplectic manifolds and asymptotic expansions

The cobordism ring of symplectic manifolds defined by V.L. Ginzburg is shown to be isomorphic to the Pontrjagin ring of complex-oriented manifolds with free circle actions. This suggests an interpretation of the formal group law of complex cobordism, in terms of a composition-law on semiclassical expansions. An appendix discusses related questions about cobordism of toric varieties.

Topological gravity in dimensions two and four

Recent work by physicists on gravity in two dimensions has a natural generalization to four dimensions, formulated in terms of an analogue of Segal's category [defined for the study of conformal field theory].

Completions of Z/(p)-Tate cohomology of periodic spectra

We construct splittings of some completions of the Z/(p)-Tate cohomology of E(n) and some related spectra. In particular, we split (a completion of) tE(n) as a (completion of) a wedge of E(n-1)'s as a spectrum, where t is shorthand for the fixed points of the Z/(p)-Tate cohomology spectrum (ie Mahowald's inverse limit of P_{-k} smash SE(n)). We also give a multiplicative splitting of tE(n) after a suitable base extension.

Quantum generalized cohomology

We construct a ring structure on complex cobordism tensored with the rationals, which is related to the usual ring structure as quantum cohomology is related to ordinary cohomology. The resulting object defines a generalized two- dimensional topological field theory taking values in a category of spectra.

Schur Q-functions and a Kontsevich-Witten genus

The Virasoro operations in Witten's theory of two-dimensional topological gravity have a homotopy-theoretic interpretation as endomorphisms of an ordinary cohomology theory with coefficients in a localization of I. Schur's ring Δof Q-functions. The resulting theory has many of the features of a vertex operator algebra.
