Holographic Kondo and Fano Resonances

We use holography to study a $(1+1)$-dimensional Conformal Field Theory (CFT) coupled to an impurity. The CFT is an $SU(N)$ gauge theory at large $N$, with strong gauge interactions. The impurity is an $SU(N)$ spin. We trigger an impurity Renormalization Group (RG) flow via a Kondo coupling. The Kondo effect occurs only below the critical temperature of a large-$N$ mean-field transition. We show that at all temperatures $T$, impurity spectral functions exhibit a Fano resonance, which in the low-$T$ phase is a large-$N$ manifestation of the Kondo resonance. We thus provide an example in which the Kondo resonance survives strong correlations, and uncover a novel mechanism for generating Fano resonances, via RG flows between $(0 + 1)$-dimensional fixed points

Two-point Functions in a Holographic Kondo Model

We develop the formalism of holographic renormalization to compute two-point functions in a holographic Kondo model. The model describes a $(0+1)$-dimensional impurity spin of a gauged $SU(N)$ interacting with a $(1+1)$-dimensional, large-$N$, strongly-coupled Conformal Field Theory (CFT). We describe the impurity using Abrikosov pseudo-fermions, and define an $SU(N)$-invariant scalar operator $\mathcal{O}$ built from a pseudo-fermion and a CFT fermion. At large $N$ the Kondo interaction is of the form $\mathcal{O}^{\dagger} \mathcal{O}$, which is marginally relevant, and generates a Renormalization Group (RG) flow at the impurity. A second-order mean-field phase transition occurs in which $\mathcal{O}$ condenses below a critical temperature, leading to the Kondo effect, including screening of the impurity. Via holography, the phase transition is dual to holographic superconductivity in $(1+1)$-dimensional Anti-de Sitter space. At all temperatures, spectral functions of $\mathcal{O}$ exhibit a Fano resonance, characteristic of a continuum of states interacting with an isolated resonance. In contrast to Fano resonances observed for example in quantum dots, our continuum and resonance arise from a $(0+1)$-dimensional UV fixed point and RG flow, respectively. In the low-temperature phase, the resonance comes from a pole in the Green's function of the form $-i \langle {\cal O} \rangle^2$, which is characteristic of a Kondo resonance.

Quantum Quenches in a Holographic Kondo Model

We study non-equilibrium dynamics and quantum quenches in a recent gauge/gravity duality model for a strongly coupled system interacting with a magnetic impurity with $SU(N)$ spin. At large $N$, it is convenient to write the impurity spin as a bilinear in Abrikosov fermions. The model describes an RG flow triggered by the marginally relevant Kondo operator. There is a phase transition at a critical temperature, below which an operator condenses which involves both an electron and an Abrikosov fermion field. This corresponds to a holographic superconductor in AdS$_2$ and models the impurity screening. We study the time dependence of the condensate induced by quenches of the Kondo coupling. The timescale for equilibration is generically given by the lowest-lying quasinormal mode of the dual gravity model. This mode also governs the formation of the screening cloud, which is obtained as the decrease of impurity degrees of freedom with time. In the condensed phase, the leading quasinormal mode is imaginary and the relaxation of the condensate is over-damped. For quenches whose final state is close to the critical point of the large $N$ phase transition, we study the critical slowing down and obtain the combination of critical exponents $zν=1$. When the final state is exactly at the phase transition, we find that the exponential ringing of the quasinormal modes is replaced by a power-law behaviour of the form $\sim t^{-a}\sin(b\log t)$. This indicates the emergence of a discrete scale invariance.

Entanglement Entropy in a Holographic Kondo Model

We calculate entanglement and impurity entropies in a recent holographic model of a magnetic impurity interacting with a strongly coupled system. There is an RG flow to an IR fixed point where the impurity is screened, leading to a decrease in impurity degrees of freedom. This information loss corresponds to a volume decrease in our dual gravity model, which consists of a codimension one hypersurface embedded in a BTZ black hole background in three dimensions. There are matter fields defined on this hypersurface which are dual to Kondo field theory operators. In the large N limit, the formation of the Kondo cloud corresponds to the condensation of a scalar field. The entropy is calculated according to the Ryu-Takayanagi prescription. This requires to determine the backreaction of the hypersurface on the BTZ geometry, which is achieved by solving the Israel junction conditions. We find that the larger the scalar condensate gets, the more the volume of constant time slices in the bulk is reduced, shortening the bulk geodesics and reducing the impurity entropy. This provides a new non-trivial example of an RG flow satisfying the g-theorem. Moreover, we find explicit expressions for the impurity entropy which are in agreement with previous field theory results for free electrons. This demonstrates the universality of perturbing about an IR fixed point.

Some consequences of the Majoron being the dark radiation

We discuss some phenomenological consequences in a scenario where a singlet Majoron plays the role of dark radiation. We study the interrelations between neutrino mass generation and the scalar potential arising from this identification. We find the extra scalar has to be light with a mass at or below the GeV level. The mixing of this scalar with the Standard Model Higgs impacts low energy phenomena such as the muonic hydrogen Lamb shift and muon anomalous magnetic moment. Demanding that the light scalar solves the puzzle in the muon magnetic moment requires the scalar to be lighter still with mass at or below the 10 MeV level. The cross-sections for the production of heavy neutrinos at LHC14 are also given.

$U(1)_{B-L}$ extra-natural inflation with Standard Model on a brane

The interrelation between inflationary cosmology and new physics beyond the Standard Model (SM) is studied in a $U(1)_{B-L}$ extension of the SM embedded in a (4+1)-dimensional spacetime. In the scenario we study, the inflaton arises from the Wilson loop of the $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge group winding an extra-dimensional cycle. Particular attention is paid to the coupling between the inflaton and SM particles that are confined on a brane localised in the extra dimension. We find that the inflaton decay channels are rather restricted in this scenario and the resulting reheating temperature is relatively low.

Constraints on New Scalars from the LHC 125 GeV Higgs Signal

We study the implications the recent results from the LHC Higgs searches have on scalar new physics. We study the impact on both the Higgs production and decay from scalars with and without colour, and in cases where decoupling do and do not happen. We investigate possible constraints on scalar parameters from the production rate in the diphoton channel, and also the two vector boson channels. Measurements from both channels can help disentangle new physics due to colour from that due to charge, and thus reveal the nature of the new scalar states.

Zero Sound in Strange Metallic Holography

One way to model the strange metal phase of certain materials is via a holographic description in terms of probe D-branes in a Lifshitz spacetime, characterised by a dynamical exponent z. The background geometry is dual to a strongly-interacting quantum critical theory while the probe D-branes are dual to a finite density of charge carriers that can exhibit the characteristic properties of strange metals. We compute holographically the low-frequency and low-momentum form of the charge density and current retarded Green's functions in these systems for massless charge carriers. The results reveal a quasi-particle excitation when z<2, which in analogy with Landau Fermi liquids we call zero sound. The real part of the dispersion relation depends on momentum k linearly, while the imaginary part goes as k^2/z. When z is greater than or equal to 2 the zero sound is not a well-defined quasi-particle. We also compute the frequency-dependent conductivity in arbitrary spacetime dimensions. Using that as a measure of the charge current spectral function, we find that the zero sound appears only when the spectral function consists of a single delta function at zero frequency.

Natural Dirac Neutrinos from Warped Extra Dimension

Dirac neutrinos arising from gauged discrete symmetry à la Krauss-Wilczek are implemented in the minimal custodial Randall-Sundrum model. In the case of a normal hierarchy, all lepton masses and mixing pattern can be naturally reproduced at the TeV scale set by the electroweak constraints, while simultanously satisfy bounds from lepton flavour violation. A nonzero neutrino mixing angle, $θ_{13}$, is generic in the scenario, as well as the existence of sub-TeV right-handed Kaluza-Klein neutrinos, which may be searched for at the LHC.

Holographic Flavor Transport in Schroedinger Spacetime

We use gauge-gravity duality to study the transport properties of a finite density of charge carriers in a strongly-coupled theory with non-relativistic symmetry. The field theory is N=4 supersymmetric SU(Nc) Yang-Mills theory in the limit of large Nc and with large 't Hooft coupling, deformed by an irrelevant operator, coupled to a number Nf of massive N=2 supersymmetric hypermultiplets in the fundamental representation of the gauge group, i.e. flavor fields. The irrelevant deformation breaks the relativistic conformal group down to the Schroedinger group, which has non-relativistic scale invariance with dynamical exponent z=2. Introducing a finite baryon number density of the flavor fields provides us with charge carriers. We compute the associated DC and AC conductivities using the dual gravitational description of probe D7-branes in an asymptotically Schroedinger spacetime. We generically find that in the infrared the conductivity exhibits scaling with temperature or frequency that is relativistic, while in the ultraviolet the scalings appear to be non-relativistic with dynamical exponent z=2, as expected in the presence of the irrelevant deformation.

Twisted Mass Finite Volume Effects

We calculate finite volume effects on the pion masses and decay constant in twisted mass lattice QCD (tmLQCD) at finite lattice spacing. We show that the lighter neutral pion in tmLQCD gives rise to finite volume effects that are exponentially enhanced when compared to those arising from the heavier charged pions. We demonstrate that the recent two flavour twisted mass lattice data can be better fitted when twisted mass effects in finite volume corrections are taken into account.

Discrete Dirac Neutrino in Warped Extra Dimensions

We implement Dirac neutrinos in the minimal custodial Randall-Sundrum setting via the Krauss-Wilczek mechanism. We demonstrate by giving explicit lepton mass matrices that with neutrinos in the normal hierarchy, lepton mass and mixing patterns can be naturally reproduced at the scale set by the constraints from electroweak precision measurements, and at the same time without violating bounds set by lepton flavour violations. Our scenario generically predicts a nonzero neutrino mixing angle $θ_{13}$, as well as the existence of sub-TeV right-handed Kaluza-Klein neutrinos, which partner the right-handed Standard Model charged leptons. These relatively light KK neutrinos may be searched for at the LHC.

Exploring Non-Supersymmetric New Physics in Polarized Møller Scattering

We study in an effective operator approach how the effects of new physics from various scenarios that contain an extra $Z'$ neutral gauge boson or doubly charged scalars, can affect and thus be tested by the precision polarized Møller scattering experiments. We give Wilson coefficients for various classes of generic models, and we deduce constraints on the parameter space of the relevant coupling constants or mixing angles from the results of the SLAC E158 experiment where applicable. We give also constraints projected from the upcoming 1 ppb JLAB experiment. In the scenario where the extra $Z'$ is light ($M_{Z'} \ll M_W$), we obtain further constraints on the parameter space using the BNL $g-2$ result where it is useful. We find that the BNL deviation from the Standard Model cannot be attributed to a light extra $Z'$ neutral gauge boson.

Flavour Changing Neutral Current Constraints from Kaluza-Klein Gluons and Quark Mass Matrices in RS1

We continue our previous study on what are the allowed forms of quark mass matrices in the Randall-Sundrum (RS) framework that can reproduce the experimentally observed quark mass spectrum and the CKM mixing pattern. We study the constraints the $ΔF = 2$ processes in the neutral meson sector placed on the admissible forms found there, and we found only the asymmetrical type of quark mass matrices arising from anarchical Yukawa structures stay viable at the few TeV scale reachable at the LHC. We study also the decay of the first Kaluza-Klein (KK) excitation of the gluon. We give the decay branching ratios into quark pairs, and we point out that measurements of the decay width and just one of the quark spins in the dominant $\bar{t}t$ decays can be used to extract the effective coupling of the first KK gluon to top quarks for both chiralities. This provides further probe to the flavour structure of the RS framework.

Testing Realistic Quark Mass Matrices in the Custodial Randall-Sundrum Model with Flavor Changing Top Decays

We study quark mass matrices in the Randall-Sundrum (RS) model with bulk symmetry $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R \times U(1)_{B-L}$. The Yukawa couplings are assumed to be within an order of magnitude of each other, and perturbative. We find that quark mass matrices of the symmetrical form proposed by Koide \textit{et. al.} [Y. Koide, H. Nishiura, K. Matsuda, T. Kikuchi and T. Fukuyama, Phys. Rev. D {\bf 66}, 093006 (2002)] can be accommodated in the RS framework with the assumption of hierarchyless Yukawa couplings, but not the hermitian Fritzsch-type mass matrices. General asymmetrical mass matrices are also found which fit well simultaneously with the quark masses and the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix. Both left-handed (LH) and right-handed (RH) quark rotation matrices are obtained that allow analysis of flavour changing decay of both LH and RH top quarks. At a warped down scale of 1.65 TeV, the total branching ratio of $t \ra Z$ + jets can be as high as $\sim 5 \times 10^{-6}$ for symmetrical mass matrices and $\sim 2 \times 10^{-5}$ for asymmetrical ones. This level of signal is within reach of the LHC.

Phenomenology from a U(1) gauged hidden sector

We consider the phenomenological consequences of a hidden Higgs sector extending the Standard Model (SM), in which the matter content are uncharged under the SM gauge groups. We consider a simple case where the hidden sector is gauged under a U(1) with one Higgs singlet. The only couplings between SM and the hidden sector are through mixings between the neutral gauge bosons of the two respective sectors, and between the Higgs bosons. We find signals testable at the LHC that can reveal the existence and shed light on the nature of such a hidden sector.

Shadow Higgs from a scale-invariant hidden $U(1)_s$ model

We study a scale invariant $SU(2)\times U(1)_Y \times U(1)_s$ model which has only dimensionless couplings. The shadow $U(1)_s$ is hidden, and it interacts with the Standard Model (SM) solely through mixing in the scalar sector and kinetic mixing of the U(1) gauge bosons. The gauge symmetries are broken radiatively by the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism. Lifting of the flat direction results in a light shadow Higgs or "scalon", and a heavier scalar which we identify as the SM Higgs boson. The phenomenology of this model is discussed. It is possible that shadow Higgs boson can be discovered in precision $t$-quark studies at the LHC. The conditions that it be a dark matter candidate is also discussed.

A Very Narrow Shadow Extra Z-boson at Colliders

We consider the phenomenological consequences of a hidden Higgs sector extending the Standard Model (SM), in which the ``shadow Higgs'' are uncharged under the SM gauge groups. We consider a simple U(1) model with one Higgs singlet. One mechanism which sheds light on the shadow sector is the mixing between the neutral gauge boson of the SM and the additional U(1) gauge group. The mixing happens through the usual mass-mixing and also kinetic-mixing, and is the only way the ``shadow $Z$'' couples to the SM. We study in detail modifications to the electroweak precision tests (EWPTs) that the presence of such a shadow sector would bring, which in turn provide constraints on the kinetic-mixing parameter, $s_ε$, left free in our model. The shadow $Z$ production rate at the LHC and ILC depends on $s_ε$. We find that observable event rate at both facilities is possible for a reasonable range of $s_ε$ allowed by EWPTs.
