A unified Casson-Lin invariant for the real forms of SL(2)

We introduce a unified framework for counting representations of knot groups into $SU(2)$ and $SL(2, \mathbb{R})$. For a knot $K$ in the 3-sphere, Lin and others showed that a Casson-style count of $SU(2)$ representations with fixed meridional holonomy recovers the signature function of $K$. For knots whose complement contains no closed essential surface, we show there is an analogous count for $SL(2, \mathbb{R})$ representations. We then prove the $SL(2, \mathbb{R})$ count is determined by the $SU(2)$ count and a single integer $h(K)$, allowing us to show the existence of various $SL(2, \mathbb{R})$ representations using only elementary topological hypotheses. Combined with the translation extension locus of Culler-Dunfield, we use this to prove left-orderability of many 3-manifold groups obtained by cyclic branched covers and Dehn fillings on broad classes of knots. We give further applications to the existence of real parabolic representations, including a generalization of the Riley Conjecture (proved by Gordon) to alternating knots. These invariants exhibit some intriguing patterns that deserve explanation, and we include many open questions. The close connection between $SU(2)$ and $SL(2, \mathbb{R})$ comes from viewing their representations as the real points of the appropriate $SL(2, \mathbb{C})$ character variety. While such real loci are typically highly singular at the reducible characters that are common to both $SU(2)$ and $SL(2, \mathbb{R})$, in the relevant situations, we show how to resolve these real algebraic sets into smooth manifolds. We construct these resolutions using the geometric transition $S^2 \to \mathbb{E}^2 \to \mathbb{H}^2$, studied from the perspective of projective geometry, and they allow us to pass between Casson-Lin counts of $SU(2)$ and $SL(2, \mathbb{R})$ representations unimpeded.

Heegaard Floer homology for manifolds with torus boundary: properties and examples

This is a companion paper to earlier work of the authors, which interprets the Heegaard Floer homology for a manifold with torus boundary in terms of immersed curves in a punctured torus. We prove a variety of properties of this invariant, paying particular attention to its relation to knot Floer homology, the Thurston norm, and the Turaev torsion. We also give a geometric description of the gradings package from bordered Heegaard Floer homology and establish a symmetry under spin$^c$ conjugation; this symmetry gives rise to genus one mutation invariance in Heegaard Floer homology for closed three-manifolds. Finally, we include more speculative discussions on relationships with Seiberg-Witten theory, Khovanov homology, and $HF^\pm$. Many examples are included.

Flag Hilbert schemes, colored projectors and Khovanov-Rozansky homology

We construct a categorification of the maximal commutative subalgebra of the type $A$ Hecke algebra. Specifically, we propose a monoidal functor from the (symmetric) monoidal category of coherent sheaves on the flag Hilbert scheme to the (non-symmetric) monoidal category of Soergel bimodules. The adjoint of this functor allows one to match the Hochschild homology of any braid with the Euler characteristic of a sheaf on the flag Hilbert scheme. The categorified Jones-Wenzl projectors studied by Abel, Elias and Hogancamp are idempotents in the category of Soergel bimodules, and they correspond to the renormalized Koszul complexes of the torus fixed points on the flag Hilbert scheme. As a consequence, we conjecture that the endomorphism algebras of the categorified projectors correspond to the dg algebras of functions on affine charts of the flag Hilbert schemes. We define a family of differentials $d_{N}$ on these dg algebras and conjecture that their homology matches that of the $\mathfrak{gl}_N$ projectors, generalizing earlier conjectures of the first and third authors with Oblomkov and Shende.

Bordered Floer homology for manifolds with torus boundary via immersed curves

This paper gives a geometric interpretation of bordered Heegaard Floer homology for manifolds with torus boundary. If $M$ is such a manifold, we show that the type D structure $\widehat{\mathit{CFD}}$ may be viewed as a set of immersed curves decorated with local systems in $\partial M$. These curves-with-decoration are invariants of the underlying three-manifold up to regular homotopy of the curves and isomorphism of the local systems. Given two such manifolds and a homeomorphism $h$ between the boundary tori, the Heegaard Floer homology of the closed manifold obtained by gluing with $h$ is obtained from the Lagrangian intersection Floer homology of the curve-sets. This machinery has several applications: We establish that the dimension of $\widehat{\mathit{HF}}$ decreases under a certain class of degree one maps (pinches) and we establish that the existence of an essential separating torus gives rise to a lower bound on the dimension of $\widehat{\mathit{HF}}$. In particular, it follows that a prime rational homology sphere $Y$ with $\widehat{\mathit{HF}}(Y)<5$ must be geometric. Other results include a new proof of Eftekhary's theorem that L-space homology spheres are atoroidal; a complete characterisation of toroidal L-spaces in terms of gluing data; and a proof of a conjecture of Hom, Lidman, and Vafaee on satellite L-space knots.

Floer Simple Manifolds and L-Space Intervals

An oriented three-manifold with torus boundary admits either no L-space Dehn filling, a unique L-space filling, or an interval of L-space fillings. In the latter case, which we call "Floer simple," we construct an invariant which computes the interval of L-space filling slopes from the Turaev torsion and a given slope from the interval's interior. As applications, we give a new proof of the classification of Seifert fibered L-spaces over $S^2$, and prove a special case of a conjecture of Boyer and Clay about L-spaces formed by gluing three-manifolds along a torus.

L-spaces, taut foliations, and graph manifolds

If $Y$ is a closed orientable graph manifold, we show that $Y$ admits a coorientable taut foliation if and only if $Y$ is not an L-space. Combined with previous work of Boyer and Clay, this implies that $Y$ is an L-space if and only if $\pi_1(Y)$ is not left-orderable.

On stable Khovanov homology of torus knots

We conjecture that the stable Khovanov homology of torus knots can be described as the Koszul homology of an explicit non-regular sequence of quadratic polynomials. The corresponding Poincare series turns out to be related to the Rogers-Ramanujan identity.

Torus knots and the rational DAHA

We conjecturally extract the triply graded Khovanov-Rozansky homology of the (m, n) torus knot from the unique finite dimensional simple representation of the rational DAHA of type A, rank n - 1, and central character m/n. The conjectural differentials of Gukov, Dunfield and the third author receive an explicit algebraic expression in this picture, yielding a prescription for the doubly graded Khovanov-Rozansky homologies. We match our conjecture to previous conjectures of the first author relating knot homology to q, t-Catalan numbers, and of the last three authors relating knot homology to Hilbert schemes on singular curves.

The Hilbert scheme of a plane curve singularity and the HOMFLY homology of its link

We conjecture an expression for the dimensions of the Khovanov-Rozansky HOMFLY homology groups of the link of a plane curve singularity in terms of the weight polynomials of Hilbert schemes of points scheme-theoretically supported on the singularity. The conjecture specializes to our previous conjecture relating the HOMFLY polynomial to the Euler numbers of the same spaces upon setting t = -1. By generalizing results of Piontkowski on the structure of compactified Jacobians to the case of Hilbert schemes of points, we give an explicit prediction of the HOMFLY homology of a (k, n) torus knot as a certain sum over diagrams. The Hilbert scheme series corresponding to the summand of the HOMFLY homology with minimal "a" grading can be recovered from the perverse filtration on the cohomology of the compactified Jacobian. In the case of (k,n) torus knots, this space furnishes the unique finite dimensional simple representation of the rational spherical Cherednik algebra with central character k/n. Up to a conjectural identification of the perverse filtration with a previously introduced filtration, the work of Haiman and Gordon and Stafford gives formulas for the Hilbert scheme series when k = mn + 1.

Sutured Floer homology and hypergraphs

By applying Seifert's algorithm to a special alternating diagram of a link L, one obtains a Seifert surface F of L. We show that the support of the sutured Floer homology of the sutured manifold complementary to F is affine isomorphic to the set of lattice points given as hypertrees in a certain hypergraph that is naturally associated to the diagram. This implies that the Floer groups in question are supported in a set of Spin^c structures that are the integer lattice points of a convex polytope. This property has an immediate extension to Seifert surfaces arising from homogeneous link diagrams (including all alternating and positive diagrams). In another direction, together with work in progress of the second author and others, our correspondence suggests a method for computing the "top" coefficients of the HOMFLY polynomial of a special alternating link from the sutured Floer homology of a Seifert surface complement for a certain dual link.

The decategorification of sutured Floer homology

We define a torsion invariant T for every balanced sutured manifold (M,g), and show that it agrees with the Euler characteristic of sutured Floer homology SFH. The invariant T is easily computed using Fox calculus. With the help of T, we prove that if (M,g) is complementary to a Seifert surface of an alternating knot, then SFH(M,g) is either 0 or Z in every spin^c structure. T can also be used to show that a sutured manifold is not disk decomposable, and to distinguish between Seifert surfaces. The support of SFH gives rise to a norm z on H_2(M, \partial M; R). Then T gives a lower bound on the norm z, which in turn is at most the sutured Thurston norm x^s. For closed three-manifolds, it is well known that Floer homology determines the Thurston norm, but we show that z < x^s can happen in general. Finally, we compute T for several wide classes of sutured manifolds.

Perfect Morse functions and exotic S^2 x S^2's

The main theorem of the paper shows that a smooth manifold which is homeomorphic to S^2xS^2 and has nonvanishing Ozsvath-Szabo invariant does not admit a perfect Morse function. I am withdrawing the paper because it is unclear to me if such a manifold exists.

Odd Khovanov homology

We describe an invariant of links in the three-sphere which is closely related to Khovanov's Jones polynomial homology. Our construction replaces the symmetric algebra appearing in Khovanov's definition with an exterior algebra. The two invariants have the same reduction modulo 2, but differ over the rationals. There is a reduced version which is a link invariant whose graded Euler characteristic is the normalized Jones polynomial.

Lens space surgeries and L-space homology spheres

We describe necessary and sufficient conditions for a knot in an L-space to have an L-space homology sphere surgery. We use these conditions to reformulate a conjecture of Berge about which knots in S^3 admit lens space surgeries.

Some differentials on Khovanov-Rozansky homology

We study the relationship between the HOMFLY and sl(N) knot homologies introduced by Khovanov and Rozansky. For each N>0, we show there is a spectral sequence which starts at the HOMFLY homology and converges to the sl(N) homology. As an application, we determine the KR-homology of knots with 9 crossings or fewer.

The Superpolynomial for Knot Homologies

We propose a framework for unifying the sl(N) Khovanov-Rozansky homology (for all N) with the knot Floer homology. We argue that this unification should be accomplished by a triply graded homology theory which categorifies the HOMFLY polynomial. Moreover, this theory should have an additional formal structure of a family of differentials. Roughly speaking, the triply graded theory by itself captures the large N behavior of the sl(N) homology, and differentials capture non-stable behavior for small N, including knot Floer homology. The differentials themselves should come from another variant of sl(N) homology, namely the deformations of it studied by Gornik, building on work of Lee. While we do not give a mathematical definition of the triply graded theory, the rich formal structure we propose is powerful enough to make many non-trivial predictions about the existing knot homologies that can then be checked directly. We include many examples where we can exhibit a likely candidate for the triply graded theory, and these demonstrate the internal consistency of our axioms. We conclude with a detailed study of torus knots, developing a picture which gives new predictions even for the original sl(2) Khovanov homology.

Knot polynomials and knot homologies

This is an expository paper discussing some parallels between the Khovanov and knot Floer homologies. We describe the formal similarities between the theories and give some examples which illustrate a somewhat mysterious correspondence between them.
