Glueballs as rotating folded closed strings

In previous papers we argued that mesons and baryons can be described as rotating open strings in holographic backgrounds. Now we turn to closed strings, which should be the duals of glueballs. We look at the rotating folded closed string in both flat and curved backgrounds. A basic prediction of the closed string model is that the slope of Regge trajectories is half that of open strings. We propose that a simple method to identify glueballs is to look for resonances that belong to trajectories with a slope of approximately 0.45 GeV^-2, half the meson slope. We therefore look at the experimental spectra of flavorless light mesons to see if such a scheme, where some of the states are placed on open string trajectories and some on closed ones, can fit known experimental data. We look at the f_0 (J^PC = 0^++) and f_2 (2^++) resonances. As there is no preference for a single scheme of sorting the different states into meson and glueball trajectories, we present several possibilities, each identifying a different state as the glueball. We supplement each scheme with predictions for the masses of excited glueballs. We show that the width of the decay into two mesons is different for glueballs and mesons thus providing a supplementary tool to distinguish between them. In addition, we look at some lattice QCD results for glueball spectra and check their compatibility with the closed string model. One of the main conclusions of this paper is that an extension of experimental data on the spectrum of flavorless hadrons is needed, in particular in the region between around 2.4 GeV and 3 GeV.

New knotted solutions of Maxwell's equations

In this note we have further developed the study of topologically non-trivial solutions of vacuum electrodynamics. We have discovered a novel method of generating such solutions by applying conformal transformations with complex parameters on known solutions expressed in terms of Bateman's variables. This has enabled us to get a wide class of solutions from the basic configuration like constant electromagnetic fields and plane-waves. We have introduced a covariant formulation of the Bateman's construction and discussed the conserved charges associated with the conformal group as well as a set of four types of conserved helicities. We have also given a formulation in terms of quaternions. This led to a simple map between the electromagnetic knotted and linked solutions into flat connections of $SU(2)$ gauge theory. We have computed the corresponding CS charge in a class of solutions and it takes integer values.

More on Heisenberg's model for high energy nucleon-nucleon scattering

We revisit Heisenberg's model for nucleon-nucleon scattering which admits a saturation of the Froissart bound. We examine its uniqueness, and find that up to certain natural generalizations, it is the only action that saturates the bound. We find that we can extract also sub-leading behaviour for $σ_{\rm tot}(s)$ from it, though that requires a knowledge of the wavefunction solution that is hard to obtain, and a black-disk model allows the calculation of $σ_{elastic}(s)$ as well. The wavefunction solution is analyzed perturbatively, and its source is interpreted. Generalizations to several mesons, addition of vector mesons, and curved space regimes are also found. We discuss the relations between Heisenberg's model and holographic models that are dual to QCD-like theories.

Holographic Baryons and Instanton Crystals

In a wide class of holographic models, like the one proposed by Sakai and Sugimoto, baryons can be approximated by instantons of non-abelian gauge fields that live on the world-volume of flavor D-branes. In the leading order, those are just the Yang-Mills instantons, whose solutions can be obtained from the celebrated ADHM construction. This fact can be used to study various properties of baryons in the holographic limit. In particular, one can attempt to construct a holographic description of the cold dense nuclear matter phase of baryons. It can be argued that holographic baryons in such a regime are necessarily in a solid crystalline phase. In this review we summarize the known results on the construction and phases of crystals of the holographic baryons.

A rotating string model versus baryon spectra

We continue our program of describing hadrons as rotating strings with massive endpoints. In this paper we propose models of baryons and confront them with the baryon Regge trajectories. We show that these are best fitted by a model of a single string with a quark at one endpoint and a diquark at the other. This model is preferred over the Y-shaped string model with a quark at each endpoint. We show how the model follows from a stringy model of the holographic baryon which includes a baryonic vertex connected with N_c strings to flavor probe branes. From fitting to baryonic data we find that there is no clear evidence for a non-zero baryonic vertex mass, but if there is such a mass it should be located at one of the string endpoints. The available baryon trajectories in the angular momentum plane (J,M^2), involving light, strange, and charmed baryons, are rather well fitted when adding masses to the string endpoints, with a single universal slope of 0.95 GeV^-2. Most of the results for the quark masses are then found to be consistent with the results extracted from the meson spectra in a preceding paper, where the value of the slope emerging from the meson fits was found to be 0.90 GeV^-2. In the plane of quantum radial excitations, (n,M^2), we also find a good agreement between the meson and baryon slopes. The flavor structure of the diquark is examined, where our interest lies in particular on baryons composed of more than one quark heavier than the u and d quarks. For these baryons we present a method of checking the holographic interpretation of our results.

Large N Chern-Simons with massive fundamental fermions - A model with no bound states

In a previous paper, we analyzed the theory of massive fermions in the fundamental representation coupled to a U(N) Chern-Simons gauge theory in three dimensions at level K. It was done in the large N, large K limits where Lambda=N/K was kept fixed. Among other results, we showed there that there are no high mass quark anti-quark bound states. Here we show that there are no bound states at all.

Holographic Entanglement Entropy of Multiple Strips

We study holographic entanglement entropy (HEE) of $m$ strips in various holographic theories. We prove that for $m$ strips with equal lengths and equal separations, there are only 2 bulk minimal surfaces. For backgrounds which contain also "disconnected" surfaces, there are only 4 bulk minimal surfaces. Depending on the length of the strips and separation between them, the HEE exhibits first order "geometric" phase transitions between bulk minimal surfaces with different topologies. We study these different phases and display various phase diagrams. For confining geometries with $m$ strips, we find new classes of "disconnected" bulk minimal surfaces, and the resulting phase diagrams have a rich structure. We also study the "entanglement plateau" transition, where we consider the BTZ black hole in global coordinates with 2 strips. It is found that there are 4 bulk minimal surfaces, and the resulting phase diagram is displayed. We perform a general perturbative analysis of the $m$-strip system: including perturbing the CFT and perturbing the length or separation of the strips.

Rotating strings confronting PDG mesons

We revisit the model of mesons as rotating strings with massive endpoints and confront it with meson spectra. We look at Regge trajectories both in the (J,M2) and (n,M2) planes, where J and n are the angular momentum and radial excitation number respectively. We start from states comprised of u and d quarks alone, move on to trajectories involving s and c quarks, and finally analyze the trajectories of the heaviest observed b-bbar mesons. The endpoint masses provide the needed transition between the linear Regge trajectories of the light mesons to the deviations from linear behavior encountered for the heavier mesons, all in the confines of the same simple model. From our fits we extract the values of the quark endpoint masses, the Regge slope (string tension) and quantum intercept. The model also allows for a universal fit where with a single value of the Regge slope we fit all the (J,M2) trajectories involving u, d, s, and c quarks. We include a list of predictions for higher mesons in both J and n.

Confinement, Phase Transitions and non-Locality in the Entanglement Entropy

In this paper we study the conjectural relation between confinement in a quantum field theory and the presence of a phase transition in its corresponding entanglement entropy. We determine the sufficient conditions for the latter and compare to the conditions for having a confining Wilson line. We demonstrate the relation in several examples. Superficially, it may seem that certain confining field theories with a non-local high energy behaviour, like the dual of D5 branes wrapping a two-cycle, do not admit the corresponding phase transition. However, upon closer inspection we find that, through the introduction of a regulating UV-cutoff, new eight-surface configurations appear, that satisfy the correct concavity condition and recover the phase transition in the entanglement entropy. We show that a local-UV-completion to the confining non-local theories has a similar effect to that of the aforementioned cutoff.

The holographic dilaton

We study a set of examples of holographic duals to theories with spontaneous breaking of conformal invariance in different dimensions. The geometries are domain walls interpolating between two AdS spaces, with a non-trivial background scalar field dual to a relevant operator. We comment on a subtlety in the low momentum expansion pointed out in arXiv:1304.3051 for the case of background gravity and revise the dynamical gravity results of arXiv:1207.0006, where the dilaton pole was missing in the scalar-scalar and tensor-tensor two-point functions. We compute the energy-momentum tensor and scalar two-point functions and show that there is indeed a massless dilaton pole.

On spontaneous breaking of conformal symmetry by probe flavour D-branes

We explore the possibilities of breaking conformal symmetry spontaneously by introducing flavour branes into conformal holographic backgrounds in the probe limit. A prototype model of such a mechanism is based on placing D7 - anti-D7 configuration in the Klebanov-Witten conifold based model. In this paper we generalize this model. We conjecture on the required topology of the backgrounds and the corresponding probe brane embeddings. We identify several models that obey these requirements and admit spontaneous breaking of conformal invariance. These include type IIB conifold based examples, dual to defect field theories based on the conifold, and type IIA constructions based on the ABJM model. We identify the dilaton, the corresponding Goldstone boson, discuss its effective action and address the "a-term". We briefly discuss the relevance of these models to the pseudo dilaton.

Dimension Changing Phase Transitions in Instanton Crystals

We investigate lattices of instantons and the dimension-changing transitions between them. Our ultimate goal is the 3D->4D transition, which is holographically dual to the phase transition between the baryonic and the quarkyonic phases of cold nuclear matter. However, in this paper (just as in [1]) we focus on lower dimensions -- the 1D lattice of instantons in a harmonic potential V M_2^2x_2^2+M_3^2x_2^2+M_4^2x_4^2 and the zigzag-shaped lattice as a first stage of the 1D->2D transition. We prove that in the low- and moderate-density regimes, interactions between the instantons are dominated by two-body forces. This drastically simplifies finding the ground state of the instantons' orientations, so we made a numeric scan of the whole orientation space instead of assuming any particular ansatz. We find that depending on the M_2/M_3/M_4 ratios, the ground state of instanton orientations can follow a wide variety of patterns. For the straight 1D lattices, we found orientations periodically running over elements of a Z_2, Klein, prismatic, or dihedral subgroup of the SU(2)/Z_2, as well as irrational but link-periodic patterns. For the zigzag-shaped lattices, we detected 4 distinct orientation phases -- the anti-ferromagnet, another abelian phase, and two non-abelian phases. Allowing the zigzag amplitude to vary as a function of increasing compression force, we obtained the phase diagram for the straight and zigzag-shaped lattices in the (force, M_3/M_4), (chemical potential, M_3/M_4), and (density, M_3/M_4) planes. Some of the transitions between these phases are second-order while others are first-order. Our techniques can be applied to other types of non-abelian crystals.

Stability conditions for spatially modulated phases

We introduce a novel set of stability conditions for vacua with broken Lorentz symmetry. The first class of conditions require that the energy be minimized under small geometric deformations, which translates into requiring the positivity of a "stiffness" four-tensor. The second class of conditions requires that stress forces be restoring under small deformations. We then apply these conditions to examples of recently-discovered spatially modulated (or "striped") phases in holographic models of superconductors and high-density QCD. For backreacted solutions we find that the pressure condition is equivalent to thermodynamic stability. For probe solutions, however, these conditions are in conflict with the minimization of the free energy. This suggests that either the solutions are unstable or the definition of the free energy in the probe approximation must be revised for these solutions.

Breaking conformal invariance- Large N Chern-Simons theory coupled to massive fundamental fermions

We analyze the theory of massive fermions in the fundamental representation coupled to a U(N) Chern-Simons gauge theory at level K. It is done in the large N, large K limits where λ=N/K is kept fixed. Following arXiv:1110.4386 we obtain the solution of a Schwinger-Dyson equation for the two point function, the exact expression for the fermion propagator and the partition function at finite temperature. We prove that in the large K limit there exists an infinite set of classically conserved high spin currents also when a mass is introduced, breaking the conformal invariance. In analogy to the seminal work of 't Hooft on two dimensional QCD, we write down a Bethe-Salpeter equation for the wave function of a "quark anti-quark" bound state. We show that unlike the two dimensional QCD case, the three dimensional Chern-Simons theory does not admit a confining spectrum.

Deformation Constraints on Solitons and D-branes

We derive a set of constraints on soliton solutions using geometric deformations, and transformations by internal symmetries with space-dependent parameters. We show that Derrick's theorem and a more complete set of constraints due to Manton are special cases of these deformation constraints (DC). We demonstrate also that known soliton solutions obey the DC, and extract novel results by applying the constraints to systems of D-branes, taking into account both Dirac-Born-Infeld and Wess-Zumino actions, and examining cases with and without D-brane gauge fields. We also determine a relation with the Hamiltonian constraint for gravitational systems, and discuss configurations of finite extent, like Wilson lines.

The a-theorem and conformal symmetry breaking in holographic RG flows

We study holographic models describing an RG flow between two fixed points driven by a relevant scalar operator. We show how to introduce a spurion field to restore Weyl invariance and compute the anomalous contribution to the generating functional in even dimensional theories. We find that the coefficient of the anomalous term is proportional to the difference of the conformal anomalies of the UV and IR fixed points, as expected from anomaly matching arguments in field theory. For any even dimensions the coefficient is positive as implied by the holographic a-theorem. For flows corresponding to spontaneous breaking of conformal invariance, we also compute the two-point functions of the energy-momentum tensor and the scalar operator and identify the dilaton mode. Surprisingly we find that in the simplest models with just one scalar field there is no dilaton pole in the two-point function of the scalar operator but a stronger singularity. We discuss the possible implications.

Baryonic Popcorn

In the large N limit cold dense nuclear matter must be in a lattice phase. This applies also to holographic models of hadron physics. In a class of such models, like the generalized Sakai-Sugimoto model, baryons take the form of instantons of the effective flavor gauge theory that resides on probe flavor branes. In this paper we study the phase structure of baryonic crystals by analyzing discrete periodic configurations of such instantons. We find that instanton configurations exhibit a series of "popcorn" transitions upon increasing the density. Through these transitions normal (3D) lattices expand into the transverse dimension, eventually becoming a higher dimensional (4D) multi-layer lattice at large densities. We consider 3D lattices of zero size instantons as well as 1D periodic chains of finite size instantons, which serve as toy models of the full holographic systems. In particular, for the finite-size case we determine solutions of the corresponding ADHM equations for both a straight chain and for a 2D zigzag configuration where instantons pop up into the holographic dimension. At low density the system takes the form of an "abelian anti-ferromagnetic" straight periodic chain. Above a critical density there is a second order phase transition into a zigzag structure. An even higher density yields a rich phase space characterized by the formation of multi-layer zigzag structures. The finite size of the lattices in the transverse dimension is a signal of an emerging Fermi sea of quarks. We thus propose that the popcorn transitions indicate the onset of the "quarkyonic" phase of the cold dense nuclear matter.

Holographic Josephson Junctions and Berry holonomy from D-branes

We construct a holographic model for Josephson junctions with a defect system of a Dp brane intersecting a D(p+2) brane. In addition to providing a geometrical picture for the holographic dual, this leads us very naturally to suggest the possibility of non-Abelian Josephson junctions characterized in terms of the topological properties of the branes. The difference between the locations of the endpoints of the Dp brane on either side of the defect translates into the phase difference of the condensate in the Josephson junction. We also add a magnetic flux on the D(p+2) brane and allow it evolve adiabatically along a closed curve in the space of the magnetic flux, while generating a non-trivial Berry holonomy.
