Remarks on the disproof of the unit distance conjecture

We present a short, digested, human-verified version of the recent OpenAI-generated counterexample to the Erd\H{o}s unit distance conjecture, and a sequence of reflections on it. The argument relies crucially on ideas that may, at least in retrospect, be attributed to Ellenberg-Venkatesh, Golod-Shafarevich, and Hajir-Maire-Ramakrishna.

Finiteness of function field-valued points on exceptional Shimura varieties

Let $C/k$ be a smooth curve over a finite field of characteristic $p>0$. We prove that there are finitely many principally polarized abelian schemes of given dimension $g$ over $C$ up to $p$-power isogeny. For curves over $\overline{k}$, we prove that the moduli space of such abelian schemes is finite type up to $p$-power isogeny. Moreover, we generalize this result to arbitrary (not necessarily abelian type) Shimura varieties $S$ and sufficiently large primes $p$ in terms of $S$: The space of generically ordinary morphisms $C\to S_{k}$ (resp. $C\to S_{\overline{k}})$ is finite (resp. finite type) up to $p$-Hecke orbits.

Baily--Borel compactifications of period images and the b-semiampleness conjecture

We address two questions related to the semiampleness of line bundles arising from Hodge theory. First, we prove there is a functorial compactification of the image of a period map of a polarizable integral pure variation of Hodge structures for which the Griffiths bundle extends amply. In particular the Griffiths bundle is semiample. We prove more generally that the Hodge bundle of a Calabi--Yau variation of Hodge structures is semiample subject to some extra conditions, and as our second result deduce the b-semiampleness conjecture and the existence of a functorial Hodge-theoretic compactification of moduli spaces of polarized Calabi--Yau varieties. The semiampleness results (and the construction of the Baily--Borel compactifications) crucially use o-minimal GAGA, and the deduction of the b-semiampleness conjecture uses work of Ambro and results of Koll\'ar on the geometry of minimal lc centers to verify the extra conditions.

Secondary terms in the counting functions of quartic fields II

We determine the smoothed counts of $S_4$-quartic fields with bounded discriminant, satisfying any finite specified set of local conditions, as the sum of two main terms with a power saving error term. We also prove an analogous result for quartic rings (weighted by the number of cubic resolvents), deducing as a consequence that the Shintani zeta functions associated to the prehomogeneous vector space $\mathbb{C}^2\otimes\mathrm{Sym}^2(\mathbb{C}^3)$ have at most a simple pole at $s=5/6$.

A Taxonomy of Omnicidal Futures Involving Artificial Intelligence

This report presents a taxonomy and examples of potential omnicidal events resulting from AI: scenarios where all or almost all humans are killed. These events are not presented as inevitable, but as possibilities that we can work to avoid. Insofar as large institutions require a degree of public support in order to take certain actions, we hope that by presenting these possibilities in public, we can help to support preventive measures against catastrophic risks from AI.

On the generalized toroidal completion of period mappings

Given a period map defined over a quasi-projective variety, we construct a completion with rich geometric and Hodge-theoretic meaning. This result may be regarded as an analog of Mumford's toroidal compactification for locally symmetric Hodge varieties as well as a realizable alternative of Kato--Nakayama--Usui's construction.

Secondary terms in the counting functions of quartic fields

We prove that the smoothed counting function of the set of quartic fields, satisfying any finite set of local conditions, can be written as a linear combination of $X,X^{5/6}\log X,X^{5/6}$, upto an error term of $O(X^{13/16+o(1)})$. For certain sets of local conditions, namely, those cutting out ``$S_4$-families'' of quartic fields, we explicitly determine the leading constants of the secondary terms. We moreover express these constants in terms of secondary mass formulas associated to families of quartic fields

Periods in Families and Derivatives of Period Maps

Given a smooth proper family $\phi:X\rightarrow S$, we study the (quasi)-periods of the fibers of $\phi$ as (germs of) functions on $S$. We show that they field they generate has the same algebraic closure as that given by the flag variety co-ordinates parametrizing the corresponding Hodge filtration, together with their derivatives. Moreover, in the more general context of an arbitrary flat vector bundle, we determine the transcendence degree of the function field generated by the flat coordinates of algebraic sections. Our results are inspired by and generalize work of Bertrand--Zudilin.

CM points have everywhere good reduction

We prove that for every Shimura variety $S$, there is an integral model $\mathcal{S}$ such that all CM points of $S$ have good reduction with respect to $\mathcal{S}$. In other words, every CM point is contained in $\mathcal{S}(\overline{\mathbb{Z}})$. This follows from a stronger local result wherein we characterize the points of $S$ with potentially-good reduction (with respect to some auxiliary prime $\ell$) as being those that extend to integral points of $\mathcal{S}$.

The linear Shafarevich conjecture for quasiprojective varieties and algebraicity of Shafarevich morphisms

We prove that the universal cover of a normal complex algebraic variety admitting a faithful complex representation of its fundamental group is an analytic Zariski open subset of a holomorphically convex complex space. This is a non-proper version of the Shafarevich conjecture. More generally we define a class of subset of the Betti stack for which the covering space trivializing the corresponding local systems has this property. Secondly, we show that for any complex local system $V$ on a normal complex algebraic variety $X$ there is an algebraic map $f \colon X\to Y$ contracting precisely the subvarieties on which $V$ is isotrivial.

Integral canonical models of exceptional Shimura varieties

We prove that Shimura varieties admit integral canonical models for sufficiently large primes. In the case of abelian-type Shimura varieties, this recovers work of Kisin-Kottwitz for sufficiently large primes. We also prove the existence of integral canonical models for images of period maps corresponding to geometric families. We deduce several consequences from this, including an unramified rigid analogue of Borel's extension theorem, a version of Tate semisimplicity, CM lifting theorems, and a weakened version of Tate's isogeny theorem for ordinary points.

Compact Subvarieties of the Moduli Space of Complex Abelian Varieties

We determine the maximal dimension of compact subvarieties of $\mathcal{A}_g$, the moduli space of complex principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension $g$, and the maximal dimension of a compact subvariety through a very general point of $\mathcal{A}_g$. This also allows us to draw some conclusions for compact subvarieties of the moduli space of complex curves of compact type.

Abelian varieties are not quotients of low-dimension Jacobians

We prove that for any two integers $g\geq 4$ and $g'\leq 2g-1$, there exist abelian varieties over $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$ which are not quotients of a Jacobian of dimension $g'$. Our method in fact proves that most Abelian varieties satisfy this property, when counting by height relative to a fixed finite map to projective space.

Finite Orbits in Surfaces with a Double Elliptic Fibration and Torsion Values of Sections

We consider surfaces with a double elliptic fibration, with two sections. We study the orbits under the induced translation automorphisms proving that, under natural conditions, the finite orbits are confined to a curve. This goes in a similar direction of (and is motivated by) recent work by Cantat-Dujardin, although we use very different methods and obtain related but different results. As a sample of application of similar arguments, we prove a new case of the Zilber-Pink conjecture, namely Theorem 1.5, for certain schemes over a 2-dimensional base, which was known to lead to substantial difficulties. Most results rely, among other things, on recent theorems by Bakker and the second author of `Ax-Schanuel Type'; we also relate a functional condition with a theorem of Shioda on ramified sections of the Legendre scheme. For one of our proofs, we also use recent height inequalities by Yuan-Zhang. Finally, in an appendix, we show that the Relative Manin-Mumford Conjecture over the complex number field is equivalent to its version over the field of algebraic numbers.

Functional Transcendence of Periods and the Geometric Andr\'e--Grothendieck Period Conjecture

We prove a functional transcendence theorem for the integrals of algebraic forms in families of algebraic varieties. This allows us to prove a geometric version of Andr\'e's generalization of the Grothendieck period conjecture, which we state using the formalism of Nori motives. More precisely, we prove a version of the Ax--Schanuel conjecture for the comparison between the flat and algebraic coordinates of an arbitrary admissible graded polarizable variation of integral mixed Hodge structures. This can be seen as a generalization of the recent Ax--Schanuel theorems of \cite{chiu,GaoKlingler} for mixed period maps.

Ax-Schanuel and exceptional integrability

When can a primitive of a given algebraic function be con-structed by iteratively solving algebraic equations and composing withthe primitives of some other given algebraic functions or their inverses? We establish some results in this direction. Specifically, we establishdecision procedures for determining whether a given primitive can beexpressed in terms of finitely many others, or in terms of elliptic integrals.

Non-trivial bounds on 2, 3, 4, and 5-torsion in class groups of number fields, conditional on standard $L$-function conjectures

We prove new conditional bounds on the the $m$-torsion of class groups of number fields of any fixed degree, for $m=2$, $3$, $4$, and $5$. Our methods first recast the problem in the language of class groups of Galois modules, which allows us to relate these torsion subgroups to Selmer groups of elliptic curves. We then obtain a global estimate using the refined BSD conjecture, in a similar way to how one normally uses the Brauer-Siegel bound. Our methods are potentially very general, but rely on the existence of motives with very special $\mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z}$-cohomology. In particular, the restriction to $m=2$, $3$, $4$, and $5$ stems from needing an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$ with $m$-torsion subgroup isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z}\oplus\mu_m$.

Finiteness for self-dual classes in integral variations of Hodge structure

We generalize the finiteness theorem for the locus of Hodge classes with fixed self-intersection number, due to Cattani, Deligne, and Kaplan, from Hodge classes to self-dual classes. The proof uses the definability of period mappings in the o-minimal structure $\mathbb{R}_{\mathrm{an},\exp}$.
