Vanishing spin stiffness in weakly disordered two-dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnets

We show that a small fraction of antiferromagnetic bonds qualitatively alters the long-wavelength dynamics of two-dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnets. Although the classical ground state remains magnetized, weak bond frustration generates logarithmically correlated spatial fluctuations of the local spin stiffness, despite the microscopic disorder being short ranged. A replica field theory calculation shows that the effective disorder strength grows under coarse graining, while the spin stiffness decreases, yielding anomalously soft magnons with a scale-dependent dynamical exponent $z > 2$. Numerical diagonalization of the semiclassical spin-wave Hamiltonian confirms the anomalous low-energy scaling. The flow is toward an infinite-disorder, zero stiffness regime.

Semiclassical picture of the Heisenberg spin glass in two dimensions: from weak localization to hydrodynamics

The two-dimensional Heisenberg spin-glass model is investigated by means of a semiclassical expansion around classical states. At leading order, we obtain an effective quadratic spin-wave Hamiltonian and study the localization properties of its spectrum and eigenfunctions. We find that the nature of the spin-wave excitations, whether they are hydrodynamic or localized modes, depends crucially on the relevance/irrelevance -- in the renormalization group sense -- of the correlations induced by the underlying classical order in the spin-wave Hamiltonian matrix elements: low-energy excitations around magnetically ordered states are delocalized, whereas those around spin-glass ordered states are localized, albeit weakly. We interpret this phenomenology by relating the spontaneous breaking of spin-rotation symmetry in the original Heisenberg model to the symmetry and universality class of the resulting quadratic spin-wave Hamiltonian. We conjecture that the hydrodynamic picture can be recovered through the inclusion of interactions among the spin-wave excitations at higher order in the semiclassical expansion, favoring the onset of ergodic behavior.

Quantum Spin Glass in the Two-Dimensional Disordered Heisenberg Model via Foundation Neural-Network Quantum States

We investigate the two-dimensional frustrated quantum Heisenberg model with bond disorder on nearest-neighbor couplings using the recently introduced Foundation Neural-Network Quantum States framework, which enables accurate and efficient computation of disorder-averaged observables with a single variational optimization. Simulations on large lattices reveal an extended region of the phase diagram where conventional magnetic long-range order vanishes in the thermodynamic limit, while the Edwards-Anderson order parameter remains finite, signaling the emergence of a quantum spin-glass phase. These findings, supported by a semiclassical analysis based on a large-spin expansion, provide compelling evidence that the spin glass-order is stable against quantum fluctuations, unlike the classical case where it disappears at any finite temperature.

Scaling analysis and renormalization group on the mobility edge in the quantum random energy model

Building on recent progress in the study of Anderson and many-body localization via the renormalization group (RG), we examine the scaling theory of localization in the quantum Random Energy Model (QREM). The QREM is known to undergo a localization-delocalization transition at finite energy density, while remaining fully ergodic at the center of the spectrum. At zero energy density, we show that RG trajectories consistently flow toward the ergodic phase, and are characterized by an unconventional scaling of the fractal dimension near the ergodic fixed point. When the disorder amplitude is rescaled, as suggested by the forward scattering approximation approach, a localization transition emerges also at the center of the spectrum, with properties analogous to the Anderson transition on expander graphs. At finite energy density, a localization transition takes place without disorder rescaling, and yet it exhibits a scaling behavior analogous to the one observed on expander graphs. The universality class of the model remains unchanged under the rescaling of the disorder, reflecting the independence of the RG from microscopic details. Our findings demonstrate the robustness of the scaling behavior of random graphs and offer new insights into the many-body localization transition.

Renormalization-Group Analysis of the Many-Body Localization Transition in the Random-Field XXZ Chain

We analyze the spectral properties of the Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain with random fields in light of recent works of the renormalization-group flow of the Anderson model in infinite dimension. We reconstruct the beta function of the order parameter from the numerical data, and show that it does not admit a one-parameter scaling form and a simple Wilson-Fisher fixed point. Rather, it is compatible with a two-parameter, Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless-like flow with a line of fixed points (the many-body localized phase), which terminates into the localization transition critical point. Therefore, we argue that previous studies, which assumed the existence of an isolated Wilson- Fisher fixed point and performed one-parameter finite-size scaling analysis, could not explain the numerical data in a coherent way.

Probing marginal stability in the spherical $p=2$ model

In this paper we investigate the marginally stable nature of the low-temperature trivial spin glass phase in the spherical $p=2$ spin glass, by perturbing the system with three different kinds of non-linear interactions. In particular, we compare the effect of three additional dense four-body interactions: ferromagnetic couplings, purely disordered couplings and couplings with competing disordered and ferromagnetic interactions. Our study, characterized by the effort to present in a clear and pedagogical way the derivation of all the results, shows that the marginal stability property of the spherical spin glass depends in fact on which kind of perturbation is applied to the system: in general, a certain degree of frustration is needed also in the additional terms in order to induce a transition from a trivial to a non-trivial spin-glass phase. On the contrary, the addition of generic non-frustrated interactions does not destabilize the trivial spin-glass phase.

Realistic Model for Random Lasers from Spin-Glass Theory

This work finds its place in the statistical mechanical approach to light amplification in disordered media, namely Random Lasers (RLs). The problem of going beyond the standard mean-field Replica Symmetry Breaking (RSB) theory employed to find the solution of spin-glass models for RLs is addressed, improving the theory towards a more realistic description of these optical systems. The leading model of the glassy lasing transition is considered: the Mode-Locked (ML) 4 phasor model. This is a complex spherical 4-spin model, with a deterministic selection rule, affecting the coupling of the electromagnetic field modes. The model is investigated with both numerical and analytical techniques.

Intensity pseudo-localized phase in the glassy random laser

Evidence of an emergent pseudo-localized phase characterizing the low-temperature replica symmetry breaking phase of the complex disordered models for glassy light is provided in the mode-locked random laser model. A pseudo-localized phase corresponds to a state in which the intensity of light modes is neither equipartited among all modes nor really localized on few of them. Such a hybrid phase has been recently characterized in other models, such as the Discrete Non-Linear Schrödinger equation, just as a finite size effect, while in the low temperature phase of the glassy random laser it seems to be robust in the limit of large size.

Universality class of the mode-locked glassy random laser

By means of enhanced Monte Carlo numerical simulations parallelized on GPU's we study the critical properties of the spin-glass-like model for the mode-locked glassy random laser, a $4$-spin model with complex spins with a global spherical constraint and quenched random interactions. Using two different boundary conditions for the mode frequencies we identify the critical points and the critical indices of the random lasing phase transition using , with finite size scaling techniques. The outcome of the scaling analysis is that the mode-locked random laser is in a mean-field universality class, though different from the mean-field class of the Random Energy Model and the glassy random laser in the narrow band approximation, that is, the fully connected version of the present model. The low temperature (high pumping) phase is finally characterized by means of the overlap distribution and evidence for the onset of replica symmetry breaking in the lasing regime is provided.

Non-Unitarity Problem in Quantum Gravity Corrections to Quantum Field Theory with Born-Oppenheimer Approximation

The problem of time is one of the most relevant open issues in canonical quantum gravity. Although there is a huge literature about this topic, a commonly accepted solution has not been found yet. Here, we focus on the semiclassical approach to the problem of time, that has the main goal of reproducing quantum field theory on a fixed WKB background accounting also for quantum gravity corrections. We analyze the different choices of the expansion parameter and discuss the problems arising in previous proposals, where a non-unitary evolution emerges as an effect of quantum gravity corrections. In this work we develop a new approach to solve this problem by performing the WKB expansion with the introduction of the so-called kinematical action as a clock for quantum matter, that allows to recover a unitary dynamics.
