Theory of Multi-photon Processes for Applications in Quantum Control

We present a general theoretical framework for evaluating multi-photon processes in periodically driven quantum systems, which have been identified as a versatile tool for engineering and controlling nontrivial interactions in various quantum technology platforms. To achieve the accuracy required for such applications, the resulting effective coupling rates, as well as any drive-induced frequency shifts, must be determined with very high precision. Here, we employ degenerate Floquet perturbation theory together with a diagrammatic representation of multi-photon processes to develop a systematic and automatable approach for evaluating the effective dynamics of driven quantum systems to arbitrary orders in the drive strength. As a specific example, we demonstrate the effectiveness of this framework by applying it to the study of multi-photon Rabi oscillations in a superconducting fluxonium qubit, finding excellent agreement between our theoretical predictions and exact numerical simulations, even for large driving amplitude.

Quantum optical impurity models in interacting waveguide QED

We consider a generic model for interacting waveguide QED systems, where photons in a coupled-cavity array localize around atomic impurities while simultaneously interacting through local Kerr nonlinearities. This scenario appears naturally in nanophotonic crystals, circuit QED lattices, and ultracold atomic systems and is governed by the competition between attractive Jaynes-Cummings-mediated binding and intrinsic photon-photon repulsion. We analyze how this interplay affects the formation of localized few-photon bound states and determine the resulting many-body ground states for large periodic arrays of impurities and different filling factors. With the help of large-scale numerical simulations and approximate analytical models, we identify a rich phase diagram featuring Mott-like insulating states as well as superfluid phases with long-range correlations, which are mediated by an unbound, but strongly interacting photonic fluid.

Topological dynamics of adiabatic cat states

We consider a quantum topological frequency converter, realized by coupling a qubit to two slow harmonic modes. The dynamics of such a system is the quantum analog of topological pumping. Our quantum mechanical description shows that an initial state generically evolves into a superposition of two adiabatic states. The topological nature of the coupling between the qubit and the modes splits these two components apart in energy: for each component, an energy transfer at a quantized rate occurs between the two quantum modes, in opposite directions for the two components, reminiscent of the topological pumping. We denote such a superposition of two quantum adiabatic states distinguishable through measures of the modes' energy an adiabatic cat state. We show that the topological coupling enhances the entanglement between the qubit and the modes, and we unveil the role of the quantum or Fubini-Study metric in the characterization of this entanglement.

Topological power pumping in quantum circuits

In this article, we develop a description of topological pumps as slow classical dynamical variables coupled by a quantum system. We discuss the cases of quantum Hall pumps, Thouless pumps, and the more recent Floquet pumps based frequency converters. This last case corresponds to a quantum topological coupling between classical modes described by action-angle variables on which we focus. We propose a realization of such a topological coupler based on a superconducting qutrit suitably driven by three modulated drives. A detailed experimental protocol allowing to measure the quantized topological power transfer between the different modes of a superconducting circuit is discussed.
