Robust censored regression with l1-norm regularization

This paper considers inference in a linear regression model with random right censoring and outliers. The number of outliers can grow with the sample size while their proportion goes to zero. The model is semiparametric and we make only very mild assumptions on the distribution of the error term, contrary to most other existing approaches in the literature. We propose to penalize the estimator proposed by Stute for censored linear regression by the l1-norm. We derive rates of convergence and establish asymptotic normality of the estimator of the regression coefficients. Our estimator has the same asymptotic variance as Stute's estimator in the censored linear model without outliers. Hence, there is no loss of efficiency as a result of robustness. Tests and confidence sets can therefore rely on the theory developed by Stute. The outlined procedure is also computationally advantageous, since it amounts to solving a convex optimization program. We also propose a second estimator which uses the proposed penalized Stute estimator as a first step to detect outliers. It has similar theoretical properties but better performance in finite samples as assessed by simulations.

A nonparametric instrumental approach to endogeneity in competing risks models

This paper discusses endogenous treatment models with duration outcomes, competing risks and random right censoring. The endogeneity issue is solved using a discrete instrumental variable. We show that the competing risks model generates a non-parametric quantile instrumental regression problem. The cause-specific cumulative incidence, the cause-specific hazard and the subdistribution hazard can be recovered from the regression function. A distinguishing feature of the model is that censoring and competing risks prevent identification at some quantiles. We characterize the set of quantiles for which exact identification is possible and give partial identification results for other quantiles. We outline an estimation procedure and discuss its properties. The finite sample performance of the estimator is evaluated through simulations. We apply the proposed method to the Health Insurance Plan of Greater New York experiment.

High-dimensional inference robust to outliers with l1-norm penalization

This paper studies inference in the high-dimensional linear regression model with outliers. Sparsity constraints are imposed on the vector of coefficients of the covariates. The number of outliers can grow with the sample size while their proportion goes to 0. We propose a two-step procedure for inference on the coefficients of a fixed subset of regressors. The first step is a based on several square-root lasso l1-norm penalized estimators, while the second step is the ordinary least squares estimator applied to a well chosen regression. We establish asymptotic normality of the two-step estimator. The proposed procedure is efficient in the sense that it attains the semiparametric efficiency bound when applied to the model without outliers under homoscedasticity. This approach is also computationally advantageous, it amounts to solving a finite number of convex optimization programs.

Factor and factor loading augmented estimators for panel regression

This paper considers linear panel data models where the dependence of the regressors and the unobservables is modelled through a factor structure. The asymptotic setting is such that the number of time periods and the sample size both go to infinity. Non-strong factors are allowed and the number of factors can grow to infinity with the sample size. We study a class of two-step estimators of the regression coefficients. In the first step, factors and factor loadings are estimated. Then, the second step corresponds to the panel regression of the outcome on the regressors and the estimates of the factors and the factor loadings from the first step. Different methods can be used in the first step while the second step is unique. We derive sufficient conditions on the first-step estimator and the data generating process under which the two-step estimator is asymptotically normal. Assumptions under which using an approach based on principal components analysis in the first step yields an asymptotically normal estimator are also given. The two-step procedure exhibits good finite sample properties in simulations.

Nonparametric instrumental regression with right censored duration outcomes

This paper analyzes the effect of a discrete treatment Z on a duration T. The treatment is not randomly assigned. The confounding issue is treated using a discrete instrumental variable explaining the treatment and independent of the error term of the model. Our framework is nonparametric and allows for random right censoring. This specification generates a nonlinear inverse problem and the average treatment effect is derived from its solution. We provide local and global identification properties that rely on a nonlinear system of equations. We propose an estimation procedure to solve this system and derive rates of convergence and conditions under which the estimator is asymptotically normal. When censoring makes identification fail, we develop partial identification results. Our estimators exhibit good finite sample properties in simulations. We also apply our methodology to the Illinois Reemployment Bonus Experiment.

Inference robust to outliers with l1-norm penalization

This paper considers the problem of inference in a linear regression model with outliers where the number of outliers can grow with sample size but their proportion goes to 0. We apply the square-root lasso estimator penalizing the l1-norm of a random vector which is non-zero for outliers. We derive rates of convergence and asymptotic normality. Our estimator has the same asymptotic variance as the OLS estimator in the standard linear model. This enables to build tests and confidence sets in the usual and simple manner. The proposed procedure is also computationally advantageous as it amounts to solving a convex optimization program. Overall, the suggested approach constitutes a practical robust alternative to the ordinary least squares estimator.

Square-root nuclear norm penalized estimator for panel data models with approximately low-rank unobserved heterogeneity

This paper considers a nuclear norm penalized estimator for panel data models with interactive effects. The low-rank interactive effects can be an approximate model and the rank of the best approximation unknown and grow with sample size. The estimator is solution of a well-structured convex optimization problem and can be solved in polynomial-time. We derive rates of convergence, study the low-rank properties of the estimator, estimation of the rank and of annihilator matrices when the number of time periods grows with the sample size. Two-stage estimators can be asymptotically normal. None of the procedures require knowledge of the variance of the errors.
