Quantum mechanical bound for efficiency of quantum Otto heat engine

The second law of thermodynamics constrains that the efficiency of heat engines, classical or quantum, cannot be greater than the universal Carnot efficiency. We discover another bound for the efficiency of a quantum Otto heat engine consisting of a harmonic oscillator. Dynamics of the engine is governed by the Lindblad equation for the density matrix, which is mapped to the Fokker-Planck equation for the quasi-probability distribution. Applying stochastic thermodynamics to the Fokker-Planck equation system, we obtain the $\hbar$-dependent quantum mechanical bound for the efficiency. It turns out that the bound is tighter than the Carnot efficiency. The engine achieves the bound in the low temperature limit where quantum effects dominate. Our work demonstrates that quantum nature could suppress the performance of heat engines in terms of efficiency bound, work and power output.

Universal Property of the Housekeeping Entropy Production

The entropy production of a nonequilibrium system with broken detailed balance is a random variable whose mean value is nonnegative. Among the total entropy production, the housekeeping entropy production is associated with the heat dissipation in maintaining a nonequilibrium steady state. We derive a Langevin-type stochastic differential equation for the housekeeping entropy production. The equation allows us to define a housekeeping entropic time $τ$. Remarkably, it turns out that the probability distribution of the housekeeping entropy production at a fixed value of $τ$ is given by the Gaussian distribution regardless of system details. The Gaussian distribution is universal for any systems, whether in the steady state or in the transient state, whether they are driven by time-independent or time-dependent driving forces. We demonstrate the universal distribution numerically for model systems.

Heating and Cooling of Quantum Gas by Eigenstate Joule Expansion

We investigate the Joule expansion of an interacting quantum gas in an energy eigenstate. The Joule expansion occurs when two subsystems of different particle density are allowed to exchange particles. We demonstrate numerically that the subsystems in their energy eigenstates evolves unitarily into the global equilibrium state in accordance with the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis. We find that the quantum gas changes its temperature after the Joule expansion with a characteristic inversion temperature $T_{\rm I}$. The gas cools down (heats up) when the initial temperature is higher (lower) than $T_{\rm I}$, implying that $T_{\rm I}$ is a stable fixed point, which is contrasted to the behavior of classical gases. Our work exemplifies that transport phenomena can be studied at the level of energy eigenstates.

Emergence of Nonwhite Noise in Langevin Dynamics with Magnetic Lorentz Force

We investigate the low mass limit of Langevin dynamics for a charged Brownian particle driven by the magnetic Lorentz force. In the low mass limit, velocity variables relaxing quickly are coarse-grained out to yield effective dynamics for position variables. Without Lorentz force, the low mass limit is equivalent to the high friction limit. Both cases share the same Langevin equation that is obtained by setting the mass to zero in the original Langevin equation. The equivalence breaks down in the presence of the Lorentz force. The low mass limit turns out to be singular. The system in the low mass limit is different from the system with zero mass. The low mass limit is also different from the large friction limit. We derive the effective equations of motion in the low mass limit. The resulting stochastic differential equation involves a nonwhite noise whose correlation matrix has antisymmetric components. We demonstrate the importance of the nonwhite noise by investigating the heat dissipation by the Brownian particle.

Microscopic theory for the time irreversibility and the entropy production

In stochastic thermodynamics, the entropy production of a thermodynamic system is defined by the irreversibility measured by the logarithm of the ratio of the path probabilities in the forward and reverse processes. We derive the relation between the irreversibility and the entropy production starting from the deterministic equations of motion of the whole system consisting of a physical system and a surrounding thermal environment. The physical system is driven by a nonconservative force. The derivation assumes the Markov approximation that the environmental degrees of freedom equilibrate instantaneously. Our approach concerns the irreversibility of the whole system not only the irreversibility of the physical system only. This approach provides a guideline for the choice of the proper reverse process to a given forward process. We demonstrate our idea with an example of a charged particle in the presence of a time-varying magnetic field.

Tricritical behavior of nonequilibrium Ising spins in fluctuating environments

We investigate the phase transitions in a coupled system of Ising spins and a fluctuating network. Each spin interacts with $q$ neighbors through links of the rewiring network. The Ising spins and the network are in thermal contact with the heat baths at temperatures $T_S$ and $T_L$, respectively, so that the whole system is driven out of equilibrium for $T_S \neq T_L$. The model is a generalization of the $q$-neighbor Ising model, which corresponds to the limiting case of $T_L=\infty$. Despite the mean field nature of the interaction, the $q$-neighbor Ising model was shown to display a discontinuous phase transition for $q\geq 4$. Setting up the rate equations for the magnetization and the energy density, we obtain the phase diagram in the $T_S$-$T_L$ parameter space. The phase diagram consists of a ferromagnetic phase and a paramagnetic phase. The two phases are separated by a continuous phase transition belonging to the mean field universality class or by a discontinuous phase transition with an intervening coexistence phase. The equilibrium system with $T_S=T_L$ falls into the former case while the $q$-neighbor Ising model falls into the latter case. At the tricritical point, the system exhibits the mean field tricritical behavior. Our model demonstrates a possibility that a continuous phase transition turns into a discontinuous transition by a nonequilibrium driving. Heat flow induced by the temperature difference between two heat baths is also studied.

Time-delay Induced Dimensional Crossover in Voter Model

We investigate the ordering dynamics of the voter model with time-delayed interactions. The dynamical process in the $d$-dimensional lattice is shown to be equivalent to the first passage problem of a random walker in the $(d+1)$-dimensional strip of a finite width determined by the delay time. The equivalence reveals that the time delay leads to the dimensional crossover from the $(d+1)$-dimensional scaling behavior at short time to the $d$-dimensional scaling behavior in the long time. The scaling property in both regimes and the crossover time scale are obtained analytically, which are confirmed with the numerical simulation results.

Efficiency at maximum power and efficiency fluctuations in a linear Brownian heat engine model

We investigate stochastic thermodynamics of a two-particles Langevin system. Each particle is in contact with a heat bath at different temperatures $T_1$ and $T_2~(<T_1)$, respectively. Particles are trapped by a harmonic potential and driven by a linear external force. The system can act as an autonomous heat engine performing work against the external driving force. Linearity of the system enables us to examine thermodynamic properties of the engine analytically. We find that the efficiency of the engine at maximum power $η_{MP}$ is given by $η_{MP} = 1-\sqrt{T_2/T_1}$. This universal form has been known as a characteristic of endoreversible heat engines. Our result extends the universal behavior of $η_{MP}$ to non-endoreversible engines. We also obtain the large deviation function of the probability distribution for the stochastic efficiency in the overdamped limit. The large deviation function takes the minimum value at mean efficiency $η= \barη$ and increases monotonically until it reaches plateaus when $η\leq η_L$ and $η\geq η_R$ with model dependent parameters $η_{R,L}$. It has been known for heat engines with a finite number of microscopic configurations with time-symmetric protocol that the probability of achieving the Carnot efficiency is minimum. Our result reveals that the least likeliness of the Carnot efficiency is not the generic property of heat engines.

Macroscopic Time-Reversal Symmetry Breaking at Nonequilibrium Phase Transition

We study the entropy production in a macroscopic nonequilibrium system that undergoes an order-disorder phase transition. Entropy production is a characteristic feature of nonequilibrium dynamics with broken detailed balance. It is found that the entropy production rate per particle vanishes in the disordered phase and becomes positive in the ordered phase following critical scaling laws. We derive the scaling relations for associated critical exponents. Our study reveals that a nonequilibrium ordered state is sustained at the expense of macroscopic time-reversal symmetry breaking with an extensive entropy production while a disordered state costs only a subextensive entropy production.

Hidden entropy production by fast variables

We investigate nonequilibrium underdamped Langevin dynamics of Brownian particles that interact through a harmonic potential with coupling constant $K$ and are in thermal contact with two heat baths at different temperatures. The system is characterized by a net heat flow and an entropy production in the steady state. We compare the entropy production of the harmonic system with that of Brownian particles linked with a rigid rod. The harmonic system may be expected to reduce to the rigid rod system in the infinite $K$ limit. However, we find that the harmonic system in the $K\to\infty$ limit produces more entropy than the rigid rod system. The harmonic system has the center of mass coordinate as a slow variable and the relative coordinate as a fast variable. By identifying the contributions of the degrees of freedom to the total entropy production, we show that the hidden entropy production by the fast variable is responsible for the extra entropy production. We discuss the $K$ dependence of each contribution.

On the steady state probability distribution of nonequilibrium stochastic systems

A driven stochastic system in a constant temperature heat bath relaxes into a steady state which is characterized by the steady state probability distribution. We investigate the relationship between the driving force and the steady state probability distribution. We adopt the force decomposition method in which the force is decomposed as the sum of a gradient of a steady state potential and the remaining part. The decomposition method allows one to find a set of force fields each of which is compatible to a given steady state. Such a knowledge provides a useful insight on stochastic systems especially in the nonequilibrium situation. We demonstrate the decomposition method in stochastic systems under overdamped and underdamped dynamics and discuss the connection between them.

Block renormalization study on the nonequilibrium chiral Ising model

We present a numerical study on the ordering dynamics of a one-dimensional nonequilibrium Ising spin system with chirality. This system is characterized by a direction-dependent spin update rule. Pairs of $+-$ spins can flip to $++$ or $--$ with probability $(1-u)$ or to $-+$ with probability $u$ while $-+$ pairs are frozen. The system was found to evolve into the ferromagnetic ordered state at any $u<1$ exhibiting the power-law scaling of the characteristic length scale $ξ\sim t^{1/z}$ and the domain wall density $ρ\sim t^{-δ}$. The scaling exponents $z$ and $δ$ were found to vary continuously with the parameter $u$. In order to establish the anomalous power-law scaling firmly, we perform the block spin renormalization analysis proposed by Basu and Hinrichsen [U. Basu and H. Hinrichsen, J. Stat. Mech. (2011) P11023]. Domain walls of $b$ sites are coarse-grained into a block spin $σ^b$, and the relative frequencies of two-block patterns $σ^b_1 σ^b_2$ are measured in the $b\to\infty$ and $t\to\infty$ limit. These indices are expected to be universal. By performing extensive Monte Carlo simulations, we find that the indices also vary continuously with $u$ and that their values are consistent with the scaling exponents found in the previous study. This study serves as another evidence for the claim that the nonequilibrium chiral Ising model displays the power-law scaling behavior with continuously varying exponents.

Degree-ordered percolation on hierarchical scale-free network

We investigate the critical phenomena of the degree-ordered percolation (DOP) model on the hierarchical $(u,v)$ flower network. Using the renormalization-group like procedure, we derive the recursion relations for the percolating probability and the percolation order parameter, from which the percolation threshold and the critical exponents are obtained. When $u\neq 1$, the DOP critical behavior turns out to be identical to that of the bond percolation with a shifted nonzero percolation threshold. When $u=1$, the DOP and the bond percolation have the same vanishing percolation threshold but the critical behaviors are different. Implication to an epidemic spreading phenomenon is discussed.

Fluctuations and correlations in nonequilibrium systems

Nonequilibrium systems exchange the energy with an environment in the form of work and heat. The work done on a system obeys the fluctuation theorem, while the dissipated heat which differs from the work by the internal energy change does not. We derive the modified fluctuation relation for the heat in the overdamped Langevin system. It shows that mutual correlations among the work, the heat, and the internal energy change are responsible for the different fluctuation property of the work and the heat. The mutual correlation is investigated in detail in a two-dimensional linear diffusion system. We develop an analytic method which allows one to calculate the large deviation function for the joint probability distributions. We find that the heat and the internal energy change have a negative correlation, which explains the reason for the breakdown of the fluctuation theorem for the heat.

Stochastic Echo Phenomena in Nonequilibrium Systems

A thermodynamic system is driven into a nonequilibrium condition when a time-dependent force or a nonconservative force represented by a protocol $λ(t)$ is applied. Such a system is time irreversible in the sense that the motion under a protocol $λ(0\leq t\leq τ)$ and the time-reversed motion under $λ(τ-t)$ are not equally probable. We investigate a stochastic echo phenomenon in which a system is controlled by an optimal protocol to display the time-reversed motion. The optimal protocol is derived for a Langevin system. For the time-dependent driving case, simple harmonic oscillator systems are found to display the perfect stochastic echo phenomenon. We also show that any system driven by a time-independent nonconservative force has a dual system displaying the perfect stochastic echo phenomenon. Our study provides a novel perspective on the time-irreversibility of nonequilibrium systems.

Multiple dynamic transitions in nonequilibrium work fluctuations

The time-dependent work probability distribution function $P(W)$ is investigated analytically for a diffusing particle trapped by an anisotropic harmonic potential and driven by a nonconservative drift force in two dimensions. We find that the exponential tail shape of $P(W)$ characterizing rare-event probabilities undergoes a sequence of dynamic transitions in time. These remarkable locking-unlocking type transitions result from an intricate interplay between a rotational mode induced by the nonconservative force and an anisotropic decaying mode due to the conservative attractive force. We expect that most of high-dimensional dynamical systems should exhibit similar multiple dynamic transitions.

Comment on "Nature of the Epidemic Threshold for the Susceptible-Infected-Susceptible Dynamics in Networks" [arXiv:1305.4819]

Recently, Boguñá {\it et. al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 111}, 068701 (2013), arXiv:1305.4819] claimed that the epidemic threshold of the susceptible-infected-susceptible (SIS) model is zero on random scale-free (SF) networks with the small-world (SW) property. They drew the conclusion by taking into account a long-range reinfection mechanism. In this Comment, we will show that such an effect is too weak to guarantee an endemic phase with a {\em finite} fraction of infected nodes. Consequently, the epidemic threshold can be finite in random SF networks.

Work fluctuations in a time-dependent harmonic potential: rigorous results and beyond the overdamped limit

We investigate the stochastic motion of a Brownian particle in the harmonic potential with a time-dependent force constant. It may describe the motion of a colloidal particle in an optical trap where the potential well is formed by a time-dependent field. We use the path integral formalism to solve the Langevin equation and the associated Fokker-Planck (Kramers) equation. Rigorous relations are derived to generate the probability density function for the time-dependent nonequilibrium work production beyond the overdamped limit. We find that the work distribution exhibits an exponential tail with a power-law prefactor, accompanied by an interesting oscillatory feature (multiple pseudo locking-unlocking transitions) due to the inertial effect. Some exactly solvable cases are also discussed in the overdamped limit.
