Origin of the singular Bethe ansatz solutions for the Heisenberg XXZ spin chain

We investigate symmetry properties of the Bethe ansatz wave functions for the Heisenberg $XXZ$ spin chain. The $XXZ$ Hamiltonian commutes simultaneously with the shift operator $T$ and the lattice inversion operator $V$ in the space of $Ω=\pm 1$ with $Ω$ the eigenvalue of $T$. We show that the Bethe ansatz solutions with normalizable wave functions cannot be the eigenstates of $T$ and $V$ with quantum number $(Ω,Υ)=(\pm 1,\mp 1)$ where $Υ$ is the eigenvalue of $V$. Therefore the Bethe ansatz wave functions should be singular for nondegenerate eigenstates of the Hamiltonian with quantum number $(Ω,Υ)=(\pm 1,\mp 1)$. It is also shown that such states exist in any nontrivial down-spin number sector and that the number of them diverges exponentially with the chain length.

Anomalous Roughness in Dimer-Type Surface Growth

We point out how geometric features affect the scaling properties of non-equilibrium dynamic processes, by a model for surface growth where particles can deposit and evaporate only in dimer form, but dissociate on the surface. Pinning valleys (hill tops) develop spontaneously and the surface facets for all growth (evaporation) biases. More intriguingly, the scaling properties of the rough one dimensional equilibrium surface are anomalous. Its width, $W\sim L^α$, diverges with system size $L$, as $α={1/3}$ instead of the conventional universal value $α={1/2}$. This originates from a topological non-local evenness constraint on the surface configurations.

Roughening and preroughening transitions in crystal surfaces with double-height steps

We investigate phase transitions in a solid-on-solid model where double-height steps as well as single-height steps are allowed. Without the double-height steps, repulsive interactions between up-up or down-down step pairs give rise to a disordered flat phase. When the double-height steps are allowed, two single-height steps can merge into a double-height step (step doubling). We find that the step doubling reduces repulsive interaction strength between single-height steps and that the disordered flat phase is suppressed. As a control parameter a step doubling energy is introduced, which is assigned to each step doubling vertex. From transfer matrix type finite-size-scaling studies of interface free energies, we obtain the phase diagram in the parameter space of the step energy, the interaction energy, and the step doubling energy.

A model for correlations in stock markets

We propose a group model for correlations in stock markets. In the group model the markets are composed of several groups, within which the stock price fluctuations are correlated. The spectral properties of empirical correlation matrices reported in [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 83}, 1467 (1999); Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 83}, 1471 (1999.)] are well understood from the model. It provides the connection between the spectral properties of the empirical correlation matrix and the structure of correlations in stock markets.

Directed Ising type dynamic preroughening transition in one dimensional interfaces

We present a realization of directed Ising (DI) type dynamic absorbing state phase transitions in the context of one-dimensional interfaces, such as the relaxation of a step on a vicinal surface. Under the restriction that particle deposition and evaporation can only take place near existing kinks, the interface relaxes into one of three steady states: rough, perfectly ordered flat (OF) without kinks, or disordered flat (DOF) with randomly placed kinks but in perfect up-down alternating order. A DI type dynamic preroughening transition takes place between the OF and DOF phases. At this critical point the asymptotic time evolution is controlled not only by the DI exponents but also by the initial condition. Information about the correlations in the initial state persists and changes the critical exponents.

Preroughening transitions in a model for Si and Ge (001) type crystal surfaces

The uniaxial structure of Si and Ge (001) facets leads to nontrivial topological properties of steps and hence to interesting equilibrium phase transitions. The disordered flat phase and the preroughening transition can be stabilized without the need for step-step interactions. A model describing this is studied numerically by transfer matrix type finite-size-scaling of interface free energies. Its phase diagram contains a flat, rough, and disordered flat phase, separated by roughening and preroughening transition lines. Our estimate for the location of the multicritical point where the preroughening line merges with the roughening line, predicts that Si and Ge (001) undergo preroughening induced simultaneous deconstruction transitions.

Extended Universality of the Surface Curvature in Equilibrium Crystal Shapes

We investigate the universal property of curvatures in surface models which display a flat phase and a rough phase whose criticality is described by the Gaussian model. Earlier we derived a relation between the Hessian of the free energy and the Gaussian coupling constant in the six-vertex model. Here we show its validity in a general setting using renormalization group arguments. The general validity of the relation is confirmed numerically in the RSOS model by comparing the Hessian of the free energy and the Gaussian coupling constant in a transfer matrix finite-size-scaling study. The Hessian relation gives clear understanding of the universal curvature jump at roughening transitions and facet edges and also provides an efficient way of locating the phase boundaries.

Finite-size scaling and the toroidal partition function of the critical asymmetric six-vertex model

Finite-size corrections to the energy levels of the asymmetric six-vertex model transfer matrix are considered using the Bethe ansatz solution for the critical region. The non-universal complex anisotropy factor is related to the bulk susceptibilities. The universal Gaussian coupling constant $g$ is also related to the bulk susceptibilities as $g=2H^{-1/2}/π$, $H$ being the Hessian of the bulk free energy surface viewed as a function of the two fields. The modular covariant toroidal partition function is derived in the form of the modified Coulombic partition function which embodies the effect of incommensurability through two mismatch parameters. The effect of twisted boundary conditions is also considered.

Phase transitions in interacting domain-wall model

We investigate the interacting domain-wall model derived from the triangular-lattice antiferromagnetic Ising model with two next-nearest-neighbor interactions. The system has commensurate phases with a domain-wall density $q=2/3$ as well as that of $q=0$ when the interaction is repulsive. The $q=2/3$ commensurate phase is separated from the incommensurate phase through the Kosterlitz--Thouless~(KT) transition. The critical interaction strength and the nature of the KT phase transition are studied by the Monte Carlo simulations and numerical transfer-matrix calculations. For strongly attractive interaction, the system undergoes a first-order phase transition from the $q=0$ commensurate phase to the incommensurate phase with $q\neq 0$. The incommensurate phase is a critical phase which is in the Gaussian model universality class. The effective Gaussian coupling constant is calculated as a function of interaction parameters from the finite-size scaling of the transfer matrix spectra .
