Reversibly controlled ternary polar states and ferroelectric bias promoted by boosting square-tensile-strain

Interaction between dipoles often emerges intriguing physical phenomena, such as exchange bias in the magnetic heterostructures and magnetoelectric effect in multiferroics, which lead to advances in multifunctional heterostructures. However, the defect-dipole tends to be considered the undesired to deteriorate the electronic functionality. Here, we report deterministic switching between the ferroelectric and the pinched states by exploiting a new substrate of cubic perovskite, BaZrO$_{3}$, which boosts square-tensile-strain to BaTiO$_{3}$ and promotes four-variants in-plane spontaneous polarization with oxygen vacancy creation. First-principles calculations propose a complex of an oxygen vacancy and two Ti$^{3+}$ ions coins a charge-neutral defect-dipole. Cooperative control of the defect-dipole and the spontaneous polarization reveals ternary in-plane polar states characterized by biased/pinched hysteresis loops. Furthermore, we experimentally demonstrate that three electrically controlled polar-ordering states lead to switchable and non-volatile dielectric states for application of non-destructive electro-dielectric memory. This discovery opens a new route to develop functional materials via manipulating defect-dipoles and offers a novel platform to advance heteroepitaxy beyond the prevalent perovskite substrates.

Derivation of a governing rule in triboelectric charging and series from thermoelectricity

Friction-driven static electrification is familiar and fundamental in daily life, industry, and technology, but its basics have long been unknown and have continually perplexed scientists from ancient Greece to the modern high-tech era. Despite its simple manifestation, triboelectric charging is believed to be very complex because of the unresolvable interfacial interaction between two rubbing materials. Here, we for the first time reveal a simple physics of triboelectric charging and triboelectric series based on friction-originated thermoelectric charging effects at the interface, characterized by the material density ($ρ$), specific heat (c), thermal conductivity (k), and Seebeck coefficient (S) of each material. We demonstrate that energy dissipational heat at the interface induces temperature variations in the materials and thus develops electrostatic potentials that will initiate thermoelectric charging across the interface. We find that the trends and quantities of triboelectric charging for various polymers, metals, semiconductors, and even lightning clouds are simply governed by the triboelectric factor $ξ=S/\sqrt{ρck}$. The triboelectric figure-of-merit is expressed with the triboelectric power K=$ξ\sqrt{t/π}$, of which the difference can be maximized up to 1.2 V/W cm$^{-2}$ at the friction time t = 1 s. Our findings will bring significant opportunities for microscopic understanding and management of triboelectricity or static electrification.

Boson peak dynamics of glassy glucose studied by integrated terahertz-band spectroscopy

We performed terahertz time-domain spectroscopy, low-frequency Raman scattering, and Brillouin light scattering on vitreous glucose to investigate the boson peak (BP) dynamics. In the spectra of α(ν)/ν2 [α(ν) is the absorption coefficient], the BP is clearly observed around 1.1 THz. Correspondingly, the complex dielectric constant spectra show a universal resonancelike behavior only below the BP frequency. As an analytical scheme, we propose the relative light-vibration coupling coefficient (RCC), which is obtainable from the combination of the far-infrared and Raman spectra. The RCC reveals that the infrared light-vibration coupling coefficient CIR(ν) of the vitreous glucose behaves linearly on frequency which deviates from Taraskin's model of CIR(ν) = A + Bν2 [S. N. Taraskin et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 055504 (2006)]. The linearity of CIR(ν) might require modification of the second term of the model. The measured transverse sound velocity shows an apparent discontinuity with the flattened mode observed in the inelastic neutron scattering study [N. Violini et al., Phys. Rev. B 85, 134204 (2012)] and suggests a coupling between the transverse acoustic and flattened modes.

Lattice dynamics and antiferroelectricity in PbZrO$_3$ tested by X-ray and Brillouin light scattering

We report the results of comprehensive study of the critical dynamics of the prototype perovskite antiferroelectric PbZrO$_3$. The combination of inelastic X-ray and diffuse X-ray scattering techniques and Brillouin light scattering was used. It is found that the dispersion of the TA phonons is strongly anisotropic. The dispersion curve of the in-plane polarized TA phonons propagating in [1 1 0] direction demonstrates pronounced softening. Slowing down of the excitations at R-point is found, it is manifested in growing of the central peak. This slowing down is too weak to be considered as a primary origin of the corresponding order parameter. Obtained results are treated in terms of TA--TO flexoelectric mode coupling. It is demonstrated that the structural phase transformation in PbZrO$_3$ can be considered as the result of the only intrinsic instability associated with the ferroelectric soft mode.

Elastic Anomalies Associated with the Antiferroelectric Phase Transitions of PbHfO3 Single Crystals

The temperature dependence of the elastic properties of antiferroelectric PbHfO3 was investigated by Brillouin scattering. The two structural phase transitions of antiferroelectric-antiferroelectric-paraelectric phases were clearly identified by discontinuous changes in the acoustic mode frequencies and the hypersonic damping. The substantial softening of the mode frequency along with the remarkable increase in the acoustic damping observed in the paraelectric phase indicated the formation of precursor noncentrosymmetric (polar) clusters and their coupling to the acoustic waves. This was corroborated by the observation of quasi-elastic central peaks, the intensity of which grew upon cooling toward the Curie point. The obtained relaxation time exhibited a slowing-down behavior, suggesting that the dynamics of precursor clusters becomes more sluggish on approaching the phase transition temperature.
