Discrete denoising of heterogenous two-dimensional data

We consider discrete denoising of two-dimensional data with characteristics that may be varying abruptly between regions. Using a quadtree decomposition technique and space-filling curves, we extend the recently developed S-DUDE (Shifting Discrete Universal DEnoiser), which was tailored to one-dimensional data, to the two-dimensional case. Our scheme competes with a genie that has access, in addition to the noisy data, also to the underlying noiseless data, and can employ $m$ different two-dimensional sliding window denoisers along $m$ distinct regions obtained by a quadtree decomposition with $m$ leaves, in a way that minimizes the overall loss. We show that, regardless of what the underlying noiseless data may be, the two-dimensional S-DUDE performs essentially as well as this genie, provided that the number of distinct regions satisfies $m=o(n)$, where $n$ is the total size of the data. The resulting algorithm complexity is still linear in both $n$ and $m$, as in the one-dimensional case. Our experimental results show that the two-dimensional S-DUDE can be effective when the characteristics of the underlying clean image vary across different regions in the data.

Geometric and magnetic properties of Co/Pd system

We measured geometric and magnetic properties of Co films on the Pd(111) surface by x-ray photoelectron diffraction (XPD), x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) at the Co L_{2,3} edge, and the surface magneto-optical Kerr effect (SMOKE) measurements. Co thin films are found to grow incoherently with fcc island structure on the smooth Pd(111) substrate. Comparison of MCD and SMOKE measurements of Co thin films grown on rough and smooth Pd(111) surfaces suggests that perpendicular remanent magnetization and Co orbital moment are enhanced by the rough interface. Pd capping layer also induces perpendicular orbital moment enhancement. These observations indicate the influence of hybridization between Co 3d and Pd 4d at the interface on the magnetic anisotropy.

Depletion of density of states near Fermi energy induced by disorder and electron correlation in alloys

We have performed high resolution photoemission study of substitutionally disordered alloys Cu-Pt, Cu-Pd, Cu-Ni, and Pd-Pt. The ratios between alloy spectra and pure metal spectra are found to have dips at the Fermi level when the residual resistivity is high and when rather strong repulsive electron-electron interaction is expected. This is in accordance with Altshuler and Aronov's model which predicts depletion of density of states at the Fermi level when both disorder and electron correlation are present.
