PDE-constrained optimization for virtual sensing in structural dynamics: Full-field displacement and force recovery from sparse sensors

Virtual sensing -- recovering full-field structural response from sparse sensor measurements -- is a fundamental challenge in structural health monitoring (SHM). Fracture assessment, fatigue evaluation and remaining useful life (RUL) prognosis all take the applied load as their input, and that load frequently acts on surfaces that cannot be instrumented. An improved load estimate is therefore of direct practical value for SHM and for prognostics and health management (PHM). The mode-based approach reconstructs the displacement field accurately from a small number of sensors and has been applied successfully for that purpose. The load inferred from this reconstructed displacement is far less reliable, because the residual displacement error is amplified when it is mapped back through the dynamic stiffness. This study therefore formulates virtual sensing as a PDE-constrained optimization (PDE-CO) problem in which the elastodynamic equation is an equality constraint and the applied load is the optimization variable, so that displacement and load are estimated together rather than in sequence. To manage the computational cost, the framework separates offline finite element model preparation from online reconstruction. The assembled matrices are reused during online optimization, and the forward and gradient evaluations can use GPU-based parallel computation. The numerical comparisons support improved noise robustness of PDE-CO displacement reconstruction relative to the mode-based approach within the tested settings. These results provide a theoretical and computational foundation for the development of virtual sensing for SHM and PHM.

AgriChrono: A Multi-modal Dataset Capturing Crop Growth and Lighting Variability with a Field Robot

Advances in AI and Robotics have accelerated significant initiatives in agriculture, particularly in the areas of robot navigation and 3D digital twin creation. A significant bottleneck impeding this progress is the critical lack of "in-the-wild" datasets that capture the full complexities of real farmland, including non-rigid motion from wind, drastic illumination variance, and morphological changes resulting from growth. This data gap fundamentally limits research on robust AI models for autonomous field navigation and scene-level dynamic 3D reconstruction. In this paper, we present AgriChrono, a modular robotic data collection platform and multi-modal dataset designed to capture these dynamic farmland conditions. Our platform integrates multiple sensors, enabling remote, time-synchronized acquisition of RGB, Depth, LiDAR, IMU, and Pose data for efficient and repeatable long-term data collection in real-world agricultural environments. We successfully collected 18TB of data over one month, documenting the entire growth cycle of Canola under diverse illumination conditions. We benchmark state-of-the-art 3D reconstruction methods on AgriChrono, revealing the profound challenge of reconstructing high-fidelity, dynamic non-rigid scenes in such farmland settings. This benchmark validates AgriChrono as a critical asset for advancing model generalization, and its public release is expected to significantly accelerate research and development in precision agriculture. The code and dataset are publicly available at: https://github.com/StructuresComp/agri-chrono

Your Vision-Language-Action Model Already Has Attention Heads For Path Deviation Detection

Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models have demonstrated strong potential for predicting semantic actions in navigation tasks, demonstrating the ability to reason over complex linguistic instructions and visual contexts. However, they are fundamentally hindered by visual-reasoning hallucinations that lead to trajectory deviations. Addressing this issue has conventionally required training external critic modules or relying on complex uncertainty heuristics. In this work, we discover that monitoring a few attention heads within a frozen VLA model can accurately detect path deviations without incurring additional computational overhead. We refer to these heads, which inherently capture the spatiotemporal causality between historical visual sequences and linguistic instructions, as Navigation Heads. Using these heads, we propose an intuitive, training-free anomaly-detection framework that monitors their signals to detect hallucinations in real time. Surprisingly, among over a thousand attention heads, a combination of just three is sufficient to achieve a 44.6 % deviation detection rate with a low false-positive rate of 11.7 %. Furthermore, upon detecting a deviation, we bypass the heavy VLA model and trigger a lightweight Reinforcement Learning (RL) policy to safely execute a shortest-path rollback. By integrating this entire detection-to-recovery pipeline onto a physical robot, we demonstrate its practical robustness. All source code will be publicly available.

Vision-Guided Targeted Grasping and Vibration for Robotic Pollination in Controlled Environments

Robotic pollination offers a promising alternative to manual labor and bumblebee-assisted methods in controlled agriculture, where wind-driven pollination is absent and regulatory restrictions limit the use of commercial pollinators. In this work, we present and validate a vision-guided robotic framework that uses data from an end-effector mounted RGB-D sensor and combines 3D plant reconstruction, targeted grasp planning, and physics-based vibration modeling to enable precise pollination. First, the plant is reconstructed in 3D and registered to the robot coordinate frame to identify obstacle-free grasp poses along the main stem. Second, a discrete elastic rod model predicts the relationship between actuation parameters and flower dynamics, guiding the selection of optimal pollination strategies. Finally, a manipulator with soft grippers grasps the stem and applies controlled vibrations to induce pollen release. End-to-end experiments demonstrate a 92.5\% main-stem grasping success rate, and simulation-guided optimization of vibration parameters further validates the feasibility of our approach, ensuring that the robot can safely and effectively perform pollination without damaging the flower. To our knowledge, this is the first robotic system to jointly integrate vision-based grasping and vibration modeling for automated precision pollination.

Chasing the Tail: Effective Rubric-based Reward Modeling for Large Language Model Post-Training

Reinforcement fine-tuning (RFT) often suffers from reward over-optimization, where a policy model hacks the reward signals to achieve high scores while producing low-quality outputs. Our theoretical analysis shows that the key lies in reward misspecification at the high-reward tail: the inability to reliably distinguish Excellent responses from merely Great ones. This motivate us to focus on the high-reward region. However, such tail examples are scarce under the base LLM. While off-policy exemplars (e.g. from stronger models or rewrites) are easier to obtain, naively training on them yields a misspecified reward for the policy we aim to align. To address this, we study rubric-based rewards. By design, rubrics can leverage off-policy examples while remaining insensitive to their artifacts. To elicit rubrics that capture the high-reward tail, we highlight the importance of distinguishing among great and diverse responses, and introduce a workflow to implement this idea. We empirically demonstrate that rubric-based rewards substantially mitigate reward over-optimization and deliver effective LLM post-training improvements.

FaceShield: Defending Facial Image against Deepfake Threats

The rising use of deepfakes in criminal activities presents a significant issue, inciting widespread controversy. While numerous studies have tackled this problem, most primarily focus on deepfake detection. These reactive solutions are insufficient as a fundamental approach for crimes where authenticity is disregarded. Existing proactive defenses also have limitations, as they are effective only for deepfake models based on specific Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), making them less applicable in light of recent advancements in diffusion-based models. In this paper, we propose a proactive defense method named FaceShield, which introduces novel defense strategies targeting deepfakes generated by Diffusion Models (DMs) and facilitates defenses on various existing GAN-based deepfake models through facial feature extractor manipulations. Our approach consists of three main components: (i) manipulating the attention mechanism of DMs to exclude protected facial features during the denoising process, (ii) targeting prominent facial feature extraction models to enhance the robustness of our adversarial perturbation, and (iii) employing Gaussian blur and low-pass filtering techniques to improve imperceptibility while enhancing robustness against JPEG compression. Experimental results on the CelebA-HQ and VGGFace2-HQ datasets demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance against the latest deepfake models based on DMs, while also exhibiting transferability to GANs and showcasing greater imperceptibility of noise along with enhanced robustness. PRBench: Large-Scale Expert Rubrics for Evaluating High-Stakes Professional Reasoning

Frontier model progress is often measured by academic benchmarks, which offer a limited view of performance in real-world professional contexts. Existing evaluations often fail to assess open-ended, economically consequential tasks in high-stakes domains like Legal and Finance, where practical returns are paramount. To address this, we introduce Professional Reasoning Bench (PRBench), a realistic, open-ended, and difficult benchmark of real-world problems in Finance and Law. We open-source its 1,100 expert-authored tasks and 19,356 expert-curated criteria, making it, to our knowledge, the largest public, rubric-based benchmark for both legal and finance domains. We recruit 182 qualified professionals, holding JDs, CFAs, or 6+ years of experience, who contributed tasks inspired by their actual workflows. This process yields significant diversity, with tasks spanning 114 countries and 47 US jurisdictions. Our expert-curated rubrics are validated through a rigorous quality pipeline, including independent expert validation. Subsequent evaluation of 20 leading models reveals substantial room for improvement, with top scores of only 0.39 (Finance) and 0.37 (Legal) on our Hard subsets. We further catalog associated economic impacts of the prompts and analyze performance using human-annotated rubric categories. Our analysis shows that models with similar overall scores can diverge significantly on specific capabilities. Common failure modes include inaccurate judgments, a lack of process transparency and incomplete reasoning, highlighting critical gaps in their reliability for professional adoption.

Real-Time Human Action Recognition on Embedded Platforms

With advancements in computer vision and deep learning, video-based human action recognition (HAR) has become practical. However, due to the complexity of the computation pipeline, running HAR on live video streams incurs excessive delays on embedded platforms. This work tackles the real-time performance challenges of HAR with four contributions: 1) an experimental study identifying a standard Optical Flow (OF) extraction technique as the latency bottleneck in a state-of-the-art HAR pipeline, 2) an exploration of the latency-accuracy tradeoff between the standard and deep learning approaches to OF extraction, which highlights the need for a novel, efficient motion feature extractor, 3) the design of Integrated Motion Feature Extractor (IMFE), a novel single-shot neural network architecture for motion feature extraction with drastic improvement in latency, 4) the development of RT-HARE, a real-time HAR system tailored for embedded platforms. Experimental results on an Nvidia Jetson Xavier NX platform demonstrated that RT-HARE realizes real-time HAR at a video frame rate of 30 frames per second while delivering high levels of recognition accuracy.

MEVG: Multi-event Video Generation with Text-to-Video Models

We introduce a novel diffusion-based video generation method, generating a video showing multiple events given multiple individual sentences from the user. Our method does not require a large-scale video dataset since our method uses a pre-trained diffusion-based text-to-video generative model without a fine-tuning process. Specifically, we propose a last frame-aware diffusion process to preserve visual coherence between consecutive videos where each video consists of different events by initializing the latent and simultaneously adjusting noise in the latent to enhance the motion dynamic in a generated video. Furthermore, we find that the iterative update of latent vectors by referring to all the preceding frames maintains the global appearance across the frames in a video clip. To handle dynamic text input for video generation, we utilize a novel prompt generator that transfers course text messages from the user into the multiple optimal prompts for the text-to-video diffusion model. Extensive experiments and user studies show that our proposed method is superior to other video-generative models in terms of temporal coherency of content and semantics. Video examples are available on our project page: https://kuai-lab.github.io/eccv2024mevg.

Multimodal Image-Text Matching Improves Retrieval-based Chest X-Ray Report Generation

Automated generation of clinically accurate radiology reports can improve patient care. Previous report generation methods that rely on image captioning models often generate incoherent and incorrect text due to their lack of relevant domain knowledge, while retrieval-based attempts frequently retrieve reports that are irrelevant to the input image. In this work, we propose Contrastive X-Ray REport Match (X-REM), a novel retrieval-based radiology report generation module that uses an image-text matching score to measure the similarity of a chest X-ray image and radiology report for report retrieval. We observe that computing the image-text matching score with a language-image model can effectively capture the fine-grained interaction between image and text that is often lost when using cosine similarity. X-REM outperforms multiple prior radiology report generation modules in terms of both natural language and clinical metrics. Human evaluation of the generated reports suggests that X-REM increased the number of zero-error reports and decreased the average error severity compared to the baseline retrieval approach. Our code is available at: https://github.com/rajpurkarlab/X-REM
