Hospitality-VQA: Decision-Oriented Informativeness Evaluation for Vision-Language Models

Recent advances in Vision-Language Models (VLMs) have demonstrated impressive multimodal understanding in general domains. However, their applicability to decision-oriented domains such as hospitality remains largely unexplored. In this work, we investigate how well VLMs can perform visual question answering (VQA) about hotel and facility images that are central to consumer decision-making. While many existing VQA benchmarks focus on factual correctness, they rarely capture what information users actually find useful. To address this, we first introduce Informativeness as a formal framework to quantify how much hospitality-relevant information an image-question pair provides. Guided by this framework, we construct a new hospitality-specific VQA dataset that covers various facility types, where questions are specifically designed to reflect key user information needs. Using this benchmark, we conduct experiments with several state-of-the-art VLMs, revealing that VLMs are not intrinsically decision-aware-key visual signals remain underutilized, and reliable informativeness reasoning emerges only after modest domain-specific finetuning.

A11yn: Aligning LLMs for Web Accessibility-Aware UI Generation

Large language models can generate visually coherent web UIs from natural language requests, but they frequently violate Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), excluding users with diverse needs and contexts. We address this by introducing A11yn, a post-training framework for web accessibility-aware web UI generation. A11yn converts off-the-shelf WCAG audits into a verifiable web accessibility reward, enabling accessibility alignment without data from dense human annotations. To support training and evaluation, we release UIReq-6.8K, a dataset of 6,800 diverse UI generation instructions, and RealUIReq-300, a benchmark of 300 realistic web UI generation tasks. Experimental results show that A11yn achieves the strongest web accessibility compliance among baselines, reducing the inaccessibility rate by 87.5\% and 58.1\% under two independent WCAG auditors relative to the base model. Unlike prompting-based post-hoc accessibility-correction baselines, A11yn achieves these gains in a single-pass generation setting while maintaining comparable semantic fidelity and visual quality. Zero-shot Multimodal Document Retrieval via Cross-modal Question Generation

Rapid advances in Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) have expanded information retrieval beyond purely textual inputs, enabling retrieval from complex real world documents that combine text and visuals. However, most documents are private either owned by individuals or confined within corporate silos and current retrievers struggle when faced with unseen domains or languages. To address this gap, we introduce PREMIR, a simple yet effective framework that leverages the broad knowledge of an MLLM to generate cross modal pre questions (preQs) before retrieval. Unlike earlier multimodal retrievers that compare embeddings in a single vector space, PREMIR leverages preQs from multiple complementary modalities to expand the scope of matching to the token level. Experiments show that PREMIR achieves state of the art performance on out of distribution benchmarks, including closed domain and multilingual settings, outperforming strong baselines across all retrieval metrics. We confirm the contribution of each component through in depth ablation studies, and qualitative analyses of the generated preQs further highlight the model's robustness in real world settings.

InfoCausalQA:Can Models Perform Non-explicit Causal Reasoning Based on Infographic?

Recent advances in Vision-Language Models (VLMs) have demonstrated impressive capabilities in perception and reasoning. However, the ability to perform causal inference -- a core aspect of human cognition -- remains underexplored, particularly in multimodal settings. In this study, we introduce InfoCausalQA, a novel benchmark designed to evaluate causal reasoning grounded in infographics that combine structured visual data with textual context. The benchmark comprises two tasks: Task 1 focuses on quantitative causal reasoning based on inferred numerical trends, while Task 2 targets semantic causal reasoning involving five types of causal relations: cause, effect, intervention, counterfactual, and temporal. We manually collected 494 infographic-text pairs from four public sources and used GPT-4o to generate 1,482 high-quality multiple-choice QA pairs. These questions were then carefully revised by humans to ensure they cannot be answered based on surface-level cues alone but instead require genuine visual grounding. Our experimental results reveal that current VLMs exhibit limited capability in computational reasoning and even more pronounced limitations in semantic causal reasoning. Their significantly lower performance compared to humans indicates a substantial gap in leveraging infographic-based information for causal inference. Through InfoCausalQA, we highlight the need for advancing the causal reasoning abilities of multimodal AI systems.

Do MLLMs Capture How Interfaces Guide User Behavior? A Benchmark for Multimodal UI/UX Design Understanding

User interface (UI) design goes beyond visuals to shape user experience (UX), underscoring the shift toward UI/UX as a unified concept. While recent studies have explored UI evaluation using Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs), they largely focus on surface-level features, overlooking how design choices influence user behavior at scale. To fill this gap, we introduce WiserUI-Bench, a novel benchmark for multimodal understanding of how UI/UX design affects user behavior, built on 300 real-world UI image pairs from industry A/B tests, with empirically validated winners that induced more user actions. For future design progress in practice, post-hoc understanding of why such winners succeed with mass users is also required; we support this via expert-curated key interpretations for each instance. Experiments across multiple MLLMs on WiserUI-Bench for two main tasks, (1) predicting the more effective UI image between an A/B-tested pair, and (2) explaining it post-hoc in alignment with expert interpretations, show that models exhibit limited understanding of the behavioral impact of UI/UX design. We believe our work will foster research on leveraging MLLMs for visual design in user behavior contexts.

Can visual language models resolve textual ambiguity with visual cues? Let visual puns tell you!

Humans possess multimodal literacy, allowing them to actively integrate information from various modalities to form reasoning. Faced with challenges like lexical ambiguity in text, we supplement this with other modalities, such as thumbnail images or textbook illustrations. Is it possible for machines to achieve a similar multimodal understanding capability? In response, we present Understanding Pun with Image Explanations (UNPIE), a novel benchmark designed to assess the impact of multimodal inputs in resolving lexical ambiguities. Puns serve as the ideal subject for this evaluation due to their intrinsic ambiguity. Our dataset includes 1,000 puns, each accompanied by an image that explains both meanings. We pose three multimodal challenges with the annotations to assess different aspects of multimodal literacy; Pun Grounding, Disambiguation, and Reconstruction. The results indicate that various Socratic Models and Visual-Language Models improve over the text-only models when given visual context, particularly as the complexity of the tasks increases.
