Enhanced Optical Gap in Bi-layered Manganites La$_{2-2x}$Sr$_{1+2x}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$ near $x=0.4$

We have systematically investigated the optical conductivity spectra of La$_{2-2x}$Sr$_{1+2x}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$ ($0.3 \leqslant x \leqslant 0.5$). We find that just above the magnetic ordering temperatures, the optical gap shows an enhancement up to $\sim 0.3$ eV near $x=0.4$. Based on a $x$-dependent comparison of the nesting vector of the hypothetical Fermi surface and the superlattice wave-vector, we suggest that the peculiar $x$-dependence of the optical gap can be understood in terms of charge and lattice correlation enhanced by the charge density wave instability in nested Fermi surface.

The effect of lattice distortion and orbital mixing on the optical and magnetic properties of cubic RMnO$sub 3$ (R = La, Pr, Nd, Gd, Tb)

We investigated the $ab$-plane absorption spectra of $R$MnO$%_{3}$ ($R$ = La, Pr, Nd, Gd, and Tb) thin films. As the $R$-ion size decreases, we observed a drastic suppression of the 2 eV peak, \textit{i.e.} the inter-site optical transition between spin- and orbital-aligned states across the Mott gap. We found that both lattice distortion and the corresponding orbital mixing of the ordered orbital state should play an important role in the 2 eV peak suppression. We also found that the 2 eV spectral weight is proportional to the $A$-type antiferromagnetic ordering temperature, which suggests that the magnetic interaction might be sensitively coupled to the orbital mixing.

Electron and orbital correlations in Ca_{2-x}Sr_{x}RuO_{4} probed by optical spectroscopy

The doping and temperature dependent optical conductivity spectra of the quasi-two-dimensional Ca_{2-x}Sr_xRuO_4 (0.0=<x=<2.0) system were investigated. In the Mott insulating state, two electron correlation-induced peaks were observed around 1.0 and 1.9 eV, which could be understood in terms of the 3-orbital Hubbard model. The low frequency peak showed a shift toward higher frequency as temperature was lowered, which indicated that electron-phonon interactions play an important role in the orbital arrangements. From the systematic analysis, it was suggested that the antiferro-orbital and the ferro-orbital ordering states could coexist.

Non-Fermi liquid behavior and scaling of low frequency suppression in optical conductivity spectra of CaRuO$_3$

Optical conductivity spectra $σ_1(ω)$ of paramagnetic CaRuO$_3$ are investigated at various temperatures. At T=10 K, it shows a non-Fermi liquid behavior of $σ_1(ω)\sim 1/ω^{\frac 12}$, similar to the case of a ferromagnet SrRuO$_3$. As the temperature ($T$) is increased, on the other hand, $σ_1(ω)$ in the low frequency region is progressively suppressed, deviating from the $1/ω^{\frac 12%}$-dependence. Interestingly, the suppression of $σ_1(ω)$ is found to scale with $ω/T$ at all temperatures. The origin of the $% ω/T$ scaling behavior coupled with the non-Fermi liquid behavior is discussed.

Dynamic Jahn-Teller Mechanism of Superconductivity in MgB$_2$

We propose a novel mechanism of superconductivity in MgB$_2$ based on the dynamic electronic structure of the $pσ$-orbitals coupled with $e_{2g}$ phonons. A nonconventional superconducting state is found to arise frome lectron-phonon interactions in the presence of additional pairing channels made available by the dynamic Jahn-Teller effects. A partially broken pseudo-spin symmetry in this Jahn-Teller system, together with two-phonon exchange pairing, naturally gives rise to two distinct gaps both of which are basically isotropic in the ($k_x$, $k_y$) space. Important experimental observations including high $T_c$ and the anomalous specific heat are explained using this theory.

Spin/Orbital Pattern-Dependent Polaron Absorption in Nd(1-x)Sr(x)MnO3

We investigated optical properties of Nd(1-x)Sr(x)MnO3 (x= 0.40, 0.50, 0.55, and 0.65) single crystals. In the spin/orbital disordered state, their conductivity spectra look quite similar, and the strength of the mid-infrared absorption peak is proportional to x(1-x) consistent with the polaron picture. As temperature lowers, the Nd(1-x)Sr(x)MnO3 samples enter into various spin/orbital ordered states, whose optical responses are quite different. These optical responses can be explained by the spin/orbital ordering pattern-dependent polaron hopping.

Pseudogap formation of four-layer BaRuO$_3$ and its electrodynamic response changes

We investiaged the optical properties of four-layer BaRuO$_{3}$, which shows a fermi-liquid-like behavior at low temperature. Its optical conductivity spectra clearly displayed the formation of a pseudogap and the development of a coherent peak with decreasing temperature. Temperature-dependences of the density $n$ and the scattering rate $1/τ$ of the coherent component were also derived. As the temperature decreases, both $n$ and $1/τ$ decrease for four-layer BaRuO$_{3}$. These electrodynamic responses were compared with those of nine-layer BaRuO$_{3}$, which also shows a pseudogap formation but has an insulator-like state at low temperature. It was found that the relative rates of change of both $n$ and $1/τ$ determine either metallic or insulator-like responses in the ruthenates. The optical properties of the four-layer ruthenate were also compared with those of other pseudogap systems, such as high $T_{c}$ cuprates and heavy electron systems.

Suppression of ferromagnetic ordering in doped manganites: Effects of the superexchange interaction

From a Monte Carlo study of the ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model for doped manganites, including the antiferromagnetic superexchange interaction ($J_{AF}$), we found that the ferromagnetic ordering was suppressed as $J_{AF}$ increased. The ferromagnetic transition temperature $T_c$, as obtained from a mean field fit to the calculated susceptibilities, was found to decrease monotonically with increasing $J_{AF}$. Further, the suppression in $T_c$ scales with the bandwidth narrowing induced by the antiferromagnetic frustration originating from $J_{AF}$. From these results, we propose that the change in the superexchange interaction strength between the $t_{2g}$ electrons of the Mn ions is one of the mechanisms responsible for the suppression in $T_c$ observed in manganites of the type (La$_{0.7-y}$Pr$_{y}$)Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$.

Anomalous spin susceptibility and magnetic polaron formation in the double exchange systems

The magnetic susceptibility and spin-spin correlation of the double-exchange model for doped manganites are investigated through the Monte Carlo calculations on the three-dimensional lattice model. Deviations of the susceptibility from the Curie-Weiss behavior above the ferromagnetic ordering temperature $T_c$ seem to indicate a formation of local ferromagnetic clusters in the vicinity of $T_c$, which is consistent with recent electron paramagnetic resonance experiments for La$_{2/3}$Ca$_{1/3}$MnO$_3$. A further analysis of the spin-spin correlations show the ferromagnetic cluster size to be three-to-four lattice spacings, suggesting that the charge carriers may form magnetic polarons.

Dimensional Crossover driven by Magnetic Ordering in Optical Conductivity of Pr_{1/2}Sr_{1/2}MnO_3

We investigated optical properties of Pr_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}MnO_3, which has the A-type antiferromagnetic ordering at a low temperature. We found that T- dependence of spectral weight transfer shows a clear correlation with the magnetic phase transition. In comparison with the optical conductivity results of Nd_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}MnO_3, which has the CE-type antiferromagnetic charge ordering, we showed that optical properties of Pr_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}MnO_3 near the Neel temperature could be explained by a crossover from 3D to 2D metals. Details of spectral weight changes are consistent with the polaron picture.

Optical Investigations of Charge Gap in Orbital Ordered La1/2Sr3/2MnO4

Temperature and polarization dependent electronic structure of La1/2Sr3/2MnO4 were investigated by optical conductivity analyses. With decreasing temperature, for E//ab, a broad mid-infrared (MIR) peak of La1/2Sr3/2MnO4 becomes narrower and moves to the higher frequency, while that of Nd1/2Sr3/2MnO4 nearly temperature independent. We showed that the MIR peak in La1/2Sr3/2MnO4 originates from orbital ordering associated with CE-type magnetic ordering and that the Jahn-Teller distortion has a significant influence on the width and the position of the MIR peak.

A Scaling Behavior of Spectral Weight Changes in Perovskite Manganites La_{0.7-y}Pr_{y}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3

Optical conductivity spectra of La_{0.7-y}Pr_{y}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3 were systematically investigated. For metallic samples, the spectral weight below 0.5 eV, whose magnitude can be represented by the effective carrier number N_{eff}(0.5 eV), increases as temperature becomes lower. Regardless of the Pr doping, all the measured values of N_{eff}(0.5 eV)/T_C fall into one scaling curve. This scaling behavior could be explained by the theoretical model by Roeder et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 1356 (1996)], which includes spin double exchange and Jahn-Teller lattice coupling to holes. With the Pr doping, far-infrared conductivities were found to be suppressed, probably due to the Anderson localization.
