Demonstrating higher-order nonclassical effects by photon-added classical states: Realistic schemes

Detecting nonclassical properties that do not allow classical interpretation of photoelectric counting events is one of the crucial themes in quantum optics. Observation of individual nonclassical effects for a single-mode field, however, has been so far practically confined to sub-Poissonian statistics and quadrature squeezing. We show that a photon-added classical (coherent or thermal) state exhibits generalized nonclassical features in all orders of creation and annihilation operators, thereby becoming a promising candidate for studying higher-order nonclassical effects. Our analysis demonstrates robustness of these effects against nonideal experimental conditions.

Any multipartite entangled state violating Mermin-Klyshko inequality can be distilled for almost all bipartite splits

We study the explicit relation between violation of Bell inequalities and bipartite distillability of multi-qubit states. It has been shown that even though for $N\ge 8$ there exist $N$-qubit bound entangled states which violates a Bell inequality [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 87}, 230402 (2001)], for all the states violating the inequality there exists at least one splitting of the parties into two groups such that pure-state entanglement can be distilled [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 88}, 027901 (2002)]. We here prove that for all $N$-qubit states violating the inequality the number of distillable bipartite splits increases exponentially with $N$, and hence the probability that a randomly chosen bipartite split is distillable approaches one exponentially with $N$, as $N$ tends to infinity. We also show that there exists at least one $N$-qubit bound entangled state violating the inequality if and only if $N\ge 6$.

Limits to the sensitivity of a low noise compact atomic gravimeter

A detailed analysis of the most relevant sources of phase noise in an atomic interferometer is carried out, both theoretically and experimentally. Even a short interrogation time of 100 ms allows our cold atom gravimeter to reach an excellent short term sensitivity to acceleration of $1.4\times 10^{-8}$g at 1s. This result relies on the combination of a low phase noise laser system, efficient detection scheme and good shielding from vibrations. In particular, we describe a simple and robust technique of vibration compensation, which is based on correcting the interferometer signal by using the AC acceleration signal measured by a low noise seismometer.

Teleportation capability, distillability, and nonlocality on three-qubit states

In this paper, we consider teleportation capability, distillability, and nonlocality on three-qubit states. In order to investigate some relations among them, we first find the explicit formulas of the quantities about the maximal teleportation fidelity on three-qubit states. We show that if any three-qubit state is useful for three-qubit teleportation then the three-qubit state is distillable into a Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state, and that if any three-qubit state violates a specific form of Mermin inequality then the three-qubit state is useful for three-qubit teleportation.

Entanglement of thermal scalar fields in a compact space space

Using the thermal Green's function approach we propose a general method to investigate entanglement of the vacuum state or thermal ground states in an arbitrary dimensional space-time. As an application we show quantum separability of the massive thermal scalar field vacuum in the 1+1 dimensional cylindrical space-time. Separability is demonstrated using the positive partial transpose criterion for effective two-mode Gaussian states of collective operators. In this case, for all mass and temperature values entanglement is absent between the collective operators.

Demonstrating multipartite entanglement of single-particle W states: linear optical schemes

We present two linear optical schemes using nonideal photodetectors to demonstrate inseparability of W-type N-partite entangled states containing only a single photon. First, we show that the pairwise entanglement of arbitrary two modes chosen from N optical modes can be detected using the method proposed by Nha and Kim [Phys. Rev. A 74, 012317 (2006)], thereby suggesting the full inseparability among N parties. In particular, this scheme is found to succeed for any nonzero quantum efficiency of photodetectors. Second, we consider a quantum teleportation network using linear optics without auxiliary modes. The conditional teleportation can be optimized by a suitable choice of the transmittance of the beam splitter in the Bell measurement. Specifically, we identify the conditions under which maximum fidelity larger than classical bound 2/3 is achieved only in cooperation with other parties. We also investigate the case of on-off photodetectors that cannot discriminate the number of detected photons.

Multipartite Quantum Secret Sharing using Not-So-Weak Qubits

We propose a new quantum secret sharing scheme using a single non-entangled qubit. In the scheme, by transmitting a qubit to the next party sequentially, a sender can securely transmit a secret message to $N$ receivers who could only decode the message cooperatively after randomly shuffling the polarization of the qubit. We explain this quantum secret sharing scheme into the one between a sender and two receivers, and generalize the scheme between a sender and $N$ receivers. Since our scheme is capable of using a faint coherent pulse as a qubit, it is experimentally feasible within current technology.

Quantum Separability of Thermal Spin One Boson Systems

Using the temperature Green's function approach we investigate entanglement between two non-interacting spin 1 bosons in thermal equilibrium. We show that, contrary to the fermion case, the entanglement is absent in the spin density matrix. Separability is demonstrated using the Peres-Horodecki criterion for massless particles such as photons in black body radiation. For massive particles, we show that the density matrix can be decomposed with separable states.

Quantum Separability of the vacuum for Scalar Fields with a Boundary

Using the Green's function approach we investigate separability of the vacuum state of a massless scalar field with a single Dirichlet boundary. Separability is demonstrated using the positive partial transpose criterion for effective two-mode Gaussian states of collective operators. In contrast to the vacuum energy, entanglement of the vacuum is not modified by the presence of the boundary.

Robustness of multiparty nonlocality to local decoherence

We investigate the robustness of multiparty nonlocality under local decoherence, acting independently and equally on each subsystems. To be specific, we consider an N-qubit GHZ state under depolarization, dephasing, or dissipation channel, and tested the nonlocality by violation of Mermin-Klyshko inequality, which is one of Bell's inequalities for multi-qubit systems. The results show that the robustness of nonlocality increases with the number of qubits, and that the nonlocality of an N-qubit GHZ state with even N is extremely persistent against dephasing.

Entanglement criteria via the uncertainty relations in su(2) and su(1,1) algebra: detection of non-Gaussian entangled states

We derive a class of inequalities, from the uncertainty relations of the SU(1,1) and the SU(2) algebra in conjunction with partial transposition, that must be satisfied by any separable two-mode states. These inequalities are presented in terms of the su(2) operators J_x, J_y, and the total photon number N_a+N_b. They include as special cases the inequality derived by Hillery and Zubairy [Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 050503 (2006)], and the one by Agarwal and Biswas [New J. Phys. 7, 211 (2005)]. In particular, optimization over the whole inequalities leads to the criterion obtained by Agarwal and Biswas. We show that this optimal criterion can detect entanglement for a broad class of non-Gaussian entangled states, i.e., the su(2) minimum-uncertainty states. Experimental schemes to test the optimal criterion are also discussed, especially the one using linear optical devices and photodetectors.

Analysis of light-induced frequency shifts in the photoassociation of ultracold metastable helium atoms

We present an exhaustive analysis of the light-induced frequency shifts of the photoassociation lines of ultracold metastable 4He* atoms in a magnetic trap. The measurements of the shifts of several vibrational levels bound in the purely long-range J=1,0u+ potential linked to the 23S1-23P0 asymptote were reported in a previous paper and are analyzed here. The simplicity of this system makes it very appropriate for a detailed study. Indeed, the purely long-range character of the excited potential allows one to calculate exact excited molecular wavefunctions and to use asymptotic expansions at large internuclear distances of the ground state wavefunctions appearing in Franck-Condon type integrals. Moreover, the number of collisional channels to be considered is strongly reduced by the absence of hyperfine structure for 4He* and the use of polarized ultracold atoms and polarized light. This allows us to derive semi-analytical expressions for the shifts showing explicitly their linear dependences on the s-wave scattering length a of spin polarized metastable 4He* atoms. This explains how it is possible to derive the measurement of a from these shifts.

Entanglement between qubits induced by a common environment with a gap

We study a system of two qubits interacting with a common environment, described by a two-spin boson model. We demonstrate two competing roles of the environment: inducing entanglement between the two qubits and making them decoherent. For the environment of a single harmonic oscillator, if its frequency is commensurate with the induced two-qubit coupling strength, the two qubits could be maximally entangled and the environment could be separable. In the case of the environment of a bosonic bath, the gap of its spectral density function is essential to generate entanglement between two qubits at equilibrium and for it to be used as a quantum data bus.

Entanglement of an impurity and conduction spins in the Kondo model

Based on Yosida's ground state of the single-impurity Kondo Hamiltonian, we study three kinds of entanglement between an impurity and conduction electron spins. First, it is shown that the impurity spin is maximally entangled with all the conduction electrons. Second, a two-spin density matrix of the impurity spin and one conduction electron spin is given by a Werner state. We find that the impurity spin is not entangled with one conduction electron spin even within the Kondo screening length $ξ_K$, although there is the spin-spin correlation between them. Third, we show the density matrix of two conduction electron spins is nearly same to that of a free electron gas. The single impurity does not change the entanglement structure of the conduction electrons in contrast to the dramatic change in electrical resistance.

Quantum key distribution using superposition of the vacuum and single photon states

B92-type and BB84-type quantum cryptography schemes using superposed states of the vacuum and single particle states which are robust against PNS attacks are studied. The number of securely transferred classical bits per particle (not per qubit) sent in these schemes is calculated and found to have upper bounds. Possible experimental realizations using the cavity QED or linear optics are suggested.

Entanglement of three-qubit pure states in terms of teleportation capability

We define an entanglement measure, called the partial tangle, which represents the residual two-qubit entanglement of a three-qubit pure state. By its explicit calculations for three-qubit pure states, we show that the partial tangle is closely related to the faithfulness of a teleportation scheme over a three-qubit pure state.

Multi-dimensional trio coherent states

We introduce a novel class of higher-order, three-mode states called K-dimensional trio coherent states. We study their mathematical properties and prove that they form a complete set in a truncated Fock space. We also study their physical content by explicitly showing that they exhibit nonclassical features such as oscillatory number distribution, sub-poissonian statistics, Cauchy-Schwarz inequality violation and phase-space quantum interferences. Finally, we propose an experimental scheme to realize the state with K=2 in the quantized vibronic motion of a trapped ion.
